However, I could not get over the fact that the whole interior of the restaurant absolutely reeked of cigarettes. Pregnant woman and those with health concerns should steer clear. read more

Hands down the best fish & chips I've ever had. Fresh, flaky, the halibut was never frozen. This place might have ruined fish & chips for every where else. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon, it's was busy. She was short staffed, so it was just her and the cook. Full bar, pull taps, football on tv, plus her fish & chips is really good. Honestly the worse experience of my life. When I called to book the room I needed it for Sunday , but it was booked for the wrong day .Their website was down so I called. The woman I spoke with a lady who was nice and helped me. However she booked it for the wrong day. When the cruise line informed us we couldnt get off until 10 am Sunday I called right away. I dealt with the rudest supervisor who claimed I was a liar and refused to refund me 189 dollars I was already charged with. She claimed it was my fault and not her associates. She even was rude to my grandma on the phone. We explained we had no idea when the cruise was booked what time we were allowed off . I even told the lady when I booked the room what cruise line we were coming in on and what time we docked. I would never book with this place again nor would I advise anyone else too. The customer service I received was the worst and to call myself and my grandma a liar is beyond uncalled for. You should be ashamed of yourself. I was friendly on the phone trying to explain our situation, I even asked for a half refund because the sitution was neither my grams nor I fault. LESSON LEARNED !! We got here kind of by accident. And we were starving. Checked my Yelp App and decided to hit the Anchor Inn. Yes it's older and has seen better days, but the service was wonderful. We were greeted right away and provided menus promptly. Almost like she knew we were so hungry. We ordered some local beers and halibut burgers. My friend needed hers grilled die to her sever shellfish allergy. Man when they came to our table they were so fresh and hot and ridiculously delicious. We heard another man say he wanted extra pickles with his, we should have done the same but still omg it was worth it. It was fresh from earlier that day. The cost was also really good. Even by Alaska standards this entire town is bizarre at best. Unless you have an early departure from the port going fishing or you chose poorly as a place for your cruise to port here there isn't much reason to be here. The place smelled like Pinesol and the disappointing food is delivered in a cafeteria style dining room/bar/hotel check in/hangout under bright fluorescent lights. Don't get me wrong I love dives and dirty little diners but this place is just sad. It feels where peoples dreams go to die. read more

As a newer resident of Whittier, we love this place! Even before moving here, we loved swinging in for a beverage or food before/after hiking and exploring. I stayed here with husband 1 night because the other hotel we had reserved had a water leak and was unable to open. When we arrived, after check in time, the girl at the restaurant physically walked next door to the hotel then returned to say our room was not ready. When we got our key we went into the building and it had a very musty weird smell. The room was the same despite having a large window wide open. The furniture was worn and probably 40 years outdated. The coffee pot had coffee still in the carafe as well as an old filter in it. The sink was dirty as if coffee from a cup had been poured in and not cleaned. Under the coffee pot you could see a pool of coffee under it. The old bedspread had a stain on the white lining as soon as I pulled it back. The sheets were clean but I noticed a rip in the fitted sheet about 3/4 down. We left to go tour the little fishing town and find dinner. When we returned we met another couple that also were staying for the same reason. They told us their room also smelled bad and they were disappointed about the lack of cleanliness. We decided to shower but no washclothes. It was late. My husband went to sleep. I wastched tv despite the fact the changer only worked for volume. I had to get up and go to tv to change channels. As it got cooler I decided to close the window. It would not latch shut. So it was open about an inch rught above my head. And yes it got very cool. I placed a pillow on top of my head to keep the direct coolness off of it to try and sleep. I always carry a flash light. I got up in the night to use the bathroom and used it. When turning it on by the floor where I had layed ut I noticed how dirty the old carpet was. If it had been vacuumed, the vacuum did not work well. I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was awful in so many ways . I know it is fanily owned but they could update it 1 room at a time. I saw no one else staying besides the one other couple. In the online photos we chose the ocean view room. Which was not close and had multiple train track and storage boxes stacked high blocking the view. Also a building that had an out door light that shined through the mini blinds. A paper posted in the room mentioned curtains in the room for some reason. No curtains or even wall markings that curtains had been there. read more

Whittier is an interesting town and Anchor Inn fits right in. We checked into our room in the next building 2nd floor restaurant. Our room was clean but basic. Upon entering we noticed a peculiar smell slightly reminiscent of grandma's mothballs. The window was open but did not close entirely. The blinds could not be adjusted and only minimally blocked out the late night and early morning sun. Let's not forget the price. It was ridiculously expensive for the quality of the room. If it weren't for the fact that it was the only hotel in town, we certainly would not have chosen it. read more

Smells musty and like they just sprayed for bugs. Apparently, my husband and I are supposed to share one plate, one glass and one fork. They gave us 4 towels, 2 hand towels and 2 wash clothes for 3 days. When they "cleaned" the room today they took the dirty towels but but did not leave any wash clothes. There is no AC, thermostat, or any temp control in the suite we chose, despite hardware being installed and sitting right there in the unit. There was no indication/warning online or through email communications. The room stayed hot all day and night, despite the front office's promises that it would cool down with the setting of the sun. This was the only option for meals during our visit earlier this year. Located in the town's only hotel, the restaurant was nothing special, but faithfully serving the locals and tourists. We had the fish and chips upon recommendation. Service was friendly but a little slow. The fish and chips were worth the wait. Both items came back hot and fresh. The batter was crisp and the fish was tender and flaky. The flavor was full and fresh. The fries were good. This post is about the laundromat. The machines are $3/load and hold a fair amount (not a double load despite what it says on the label). The real issue is the dryers. There are 8 dryers in the place and only 2 of them work (last summer it was 3 so the trend is not a good one). So good luck getting your laundry done without killing a bunch of time. Also, you might want to bring your own quarters because there aren't many available in town. The Anchor Inn Grocery (where you get the laundry tokens) do not seem to have quarters for the dryers. read more

Had the best prime rib dinner with fresh vegetables, dinner roll and baked potato for very reasonable price. The waitress was hopping. Just know you are in Whittier, rural Alaska , so don't expect a 5 star restaurant with expensive wines. Also it's not a granola muffin restaurant. This little complex has got it all: bar, restaurant, museum, and lodging. It's likely the only restaurant and the only hotel open in winter in Whittier. This came in handy for me last night. I decided, last minute, to climb Bard Peak. Long story short the snow conditions were wretched and I took almost twice as long as I anticipated. What does this mean? It means that, despite forcing myself to turnaround 300 ft below the summit because of time constraints, I *STILL* missed the last tunnel crossing. All the post-holing, the fumbling over avalanche debris, the bush-whacking, all in vain. Wet and tired and stuck in Whittier. That's what I was. I scanned for hotels, found this place, and gave them a ring "I'm up at the bar, come on up." I was shocked! Not only will I be sleeping in a room instead of a car, but there is actually a bar open! I went up to the bar and hung out with a unique mix of locals and tourists (the spring species: Alaska tourists from Alaska), got my room, and had a couple of brewskis (that's how you hydrate after climbing, right?) Talked with someone from Kaktovik (look it up, super-cool spot) about anything and everything. The room was: everything I wanted. Basic, cozy, and warm. I slept great. And it only set me back $78. Lodging, restaurant, museum, store, etc. This review is for the restaurant only. When I review a business, I compare apples to apples. In this case, the restaurant at the Inn is a diner style joint in a very small coastal Alaskan town. I really wanted to try some of their shrimp dishes, since that is one of the signature seafoods that comes right out of the waters in front of the Inn. However, I was taking home some of my own freshly-harvested Alaskan spot shrimp, so I opted for the halibut fish and chips. I like panko breading vs. batter, and this was right up my alley. The portion was generous...four long strips of flaky fish, perfectly cooked. At $13.95, not a bad price for Alaska. I observed a number of breakfast items going by, and they looked like standard morning chow. Don't expect anything fancy here, just good solid diner food in a small town diner environment. read more

This is a dismal little place, but we didn't have a choice because it's the only restaurant in town. Not that the service was bad. Our waitress was very nice. Unfortunately, we came in right after some local oil or fishermen ordered about 20 meals to-go. That meant we had a lot of time to sit and take in all the random chotchkies throughout the restaurant. My brother probably didn't take notice, but the place reminded me of an Elk's lodge and had a depressing feel. Of course, it was snowing and we couldn't see the glacier we'd driven from Anchorage to see, so I was already bummed. The bowl of chili I ordered was good but my brothers BLT but was tiny and made on Wonder bread. For $8 or $9, there was really nothing to it and the skinny fries. Whittier in the winter time is a very different place than it is in the summer. If you're hungry and you didn't bring something with you then The Anchor Inn is your only choice. But it's a great choice and it provided me with a very memorable experience. Location: Keep in mind this is a former military base. Read up on the history of Whittier and you'll appreciate how the former military buildings are being repurposed. Parking: While summertime can be a zoo, in winter you may see 2-3 cars parked out front. Parking was not a problem. Once you climb the steel steps to the second floor and step inside it's not a 5-star restaurant. It's a little dated as far as the interior goes. But look around at the displays on the walls and learn more about this fascinating place that you covered a lot of miles just to get to. The Bar: They have everything you need, and can mix up about anything you can ask for. Pricing is very reasonable and the bartenders I met provided service with a smile. Can't go wrong with that. Food: While they have a limited menu with typical bar food, two items stand out. Their clam chowder is amazing and some of the best I've ever had. But there is something special about their fish and chips, made with fresh halibut. From my understanding sometimes they have it. Sometimes they don't. But if they do, order it. Try it. For my wife and I it completely changed how we look at what fish and chips should be. Cod? Maybe if I'm in Denver at GB's. But if I'm in Alaska overlooking an arm of Prince William Sound I expect to find fresh seafood. The halibut blew us away. Service: Fast, friendly, and service with a smile. But keep in mind this is a local establishment that will get some carry out orders. Sometimes you might have to wait as they get backed up. Be patient. It's worth the wait. 4 Stars? No. I'm going 5 Stars. The halibut we had here changed how we look at fish and chips which we love, but now we're halibut fans. It's even changed our sushi habits as now we always order halibut first. Yeah, this one order of fish and chips was an enlightening moment for us. It appears clean but definitely outdated and with the Alaskan heat wave no air-conditioner as well as no black out curtains for all of the nighttime like that we will get.
