The Junque Cellar is where Edmonton stores all its funk and hipness. Located on the lower floor just underneath Gravity Pope Shoes and BlackByrd Myoozik, is a shop bursting with an eclectic array of vintage items for consignment. They've got everything from retro 50's and 60's furniture, books, vintage clothing, shoes, and jewelry, handbags, and toys. One corner is crammed with African masks, Asian, and South Asian textiles. There's even a glass cabinet with Coca Cola memorabilia. It's like going through your grandmother's attic, and discovering your gran was a total globe-trotter with a weakness for impulse buying. Seriously though, I think I saw stuff from my own grandma's garage. Show them your student ID, and you get 10% off. They have stuff coming in every week, so there's always something new. For me, every trip is like a new journey down memory lane.

The Junque Cellar is rather awesome, and I would argue that it's one of the coolest stores we have in Edmonton. A lot of antique stores I've been to are full of junk, but virtually everything in The Junque Cellar is way cool. I have a facination with anything old, so as soon as I saw their selection of old-school telephones, I was in love. I know this is probably kind of lame, but I miss rotary phones, and I love the old-type of telephone ring. I also saw an old typewriter. I would love to have one in my house someday, but I can't imagine typing on one. I used one as a kid, and trying to white-out something was a total nightmare! I had no idea this place had clothing and shoes! There's some really neat stuff here, and some of the shoes are really cool! I saw some crazy old platform shoes that I'd probably fall and kill myself in, but wow, were they ever neat. There's also a room hidden behind the stairs full of old books! It's kind of sad that old books aren't acid-free, so they will all be dust eventually, so we must enjoy them while we can! This place even had old comic books hanging on the wall behind the counter. I saw some really cool Spider-Man ones--I was so in love! I'm kicking myself now, because I really need a new wallet, and I found one there I really liked. I can't get it out of my mind. It was only $15! Why didn't I buy it!?

This has been one of my favourite stores since it opened many years ago on Whyte Ave. I love all things retro so this place fits the bill for me to do some shopping. They even consign items so if you have some stuff you want to get rid of and they have some vintageness to them you may be able to sell some items. I have consigned some items from time to time so I can attest they are very easy to deal with. You will need to make an appointment with the owner though. They are sometimes booking consignments months ahead of time because they have so many people wanting to consign. So if you are in a hurry to consign some items they may not be able to accommodate you. Plan ahead and talk to them though! The items in stock are always changing of course so over time when you go in it is a new experience. They have everything from vintage clothing to retro furniture to dishes, books, magazines, electronics and more. This is definitely a unique shop on Whyte Ave that you must check out!

I really like this store. It is filled to the brim with any antique you can think of, a collection of books on a variety of subjects, clothing, shoes, accessories and house wares. I was searching for a vintage typewriter everywhere with no luck. This place had a small collection of typewriters to choose from! They also have vintage phones, cameras etc. I am not a fan of their clothing selection, but I am sure they appeal to other people. Their bags are pretty nice and they have a good selection of different ones. This space is filled with the smell of incense, which I find a little strong. If you are searching far and wide for a antique, this place should be your first stop.

I went to them not because I had ever used them before, but, I had dropped by in the past to ask about having some older pieces of jewelry re-made into something new, and they had been very patient and friendly and took the time to speak with me. This time was no different. The very nice sales associate took the time to explain to me exactly how the rebuilding process worked, explained that I could get a gold credit for the portion of the shank they were cutting out (including showing me how it's calculated), and gave me what I thought was a reasonable quote (which ended up being quite accurate as my cut out shank wasn't worth very much in the end). I was able to pick up my ring within the same week that I dropped it off. They did a great job - you can't tell at all where the new shank was soldered, and the shiny rose gold matched my original wedding bands exactly (as it should; they also offered to clean the rest of my bands, which was really nice). They do appraisals there as well ($60/piece) and they do it there in their store, so there is no need to worry about it getting sent away to a potentially less-than-reputable third party. I wasn't able to have my ring re-appraised as the person who does it (possibly the owner?) was away on vacation, but I do plan to come back to have it and other pieces appraised.

I had absolutely no "concept" of the price before entering the store. I'm glad they had the white leather barstools lining the display case because once I saw the prices, I really needed to sit down. I guess if I had more money than I knew what to do with, maybe it wouldn't be such an indulgence but considering I can barely afford rent and food...not going to happen.

If you're a collector of turn-of-the-century silverware, antique furniture, paintings, spoons, carpets and other nick-knacks that are valuable because they're old, and possibly rare, then this antique shop may have what you're looking for. It has the feel of a museum or library rather than a flea market. Everything is in glass cases, and to the undiscriminating eye it just looks like garage sale kitsch, but the price tag will tell you otherwise. I was attracted to the jewelry, which was a mix of regal, tarnished, chunky and fine. Heirlooms that get their value from the ticking of time and nostalgia.

There is a nice selection of late 19th/early 20th century pieces, particularly of the tufted uphostery kind, a few dining tables and assorted chairs, a fair amount of overpriced estate jewelry and some china. There are many items that your family and friends will most likely get a kick out of. Most of it is for the female population though (as like most stores). The Plaid Giraffe carries Nine & Co. bags from Nine West, unique scarves, jewelry (wow, do they have jewelry), and other neat gift items. As I made my way through the store recently, one guy was browsing as well and, while his girlfriend paid for her brand new bag at the counter, he was picking up one item after another and saying "How sweet is this?!?" again and again. I have to admit, it was pretty amusing. But then, so is their selection. Among their items that will make you laugh and gasp are barbed wire toilet paper (TP with a barbed wire design on it) and -- get this -- a hair-coloring kit specifically for your "hair down there". I'm dead serious! I had never seen anything like it before. I mean, who does that? Not that I'm judging or anything ... hey, it's something new! But the colors available were electric blue, pink, and orange. Whoa, now there's somethin' freaky going on there! My favorite thing about the Plaid Giraffe though, is their jewelry, which is pretty much the inner half of the shop. They have it all color-coded, so there are your blues, then purples, and black and whites, and so on. Some of it is a little pricey, but it depends on what materials it has, right? I find that most of their earrings start at $9.99 and go up from there. They've also got a wide selection of those neat purse-hanger things that have been popping up everywhere. The idea is that you basically hang part of it on the edge of a table, and it has a hook that your bag can hang from. Your bag won't be on the floor and get dirty, and has its own place. The Plaid Giraffe also carries items that make great traveler gifts, if you are shopping for a globe-trotter. They have typical items like travel pillows, but with and fun designs, so they're not as boring. Anyway, that's just a peek at what they have in store. I'm already looking forward to my next trip here!

I did like their cute wallets made from different colored leather with fun designs or patterns on them. They have a lot of accessories. Their whole back half of the store is devoted to accessories. I found some great earrings that I've been looking for at some good prices; one pair was $9.99 and the other pair (a pair of square ones; I actually don't own square shaped earrings!) for $11.99. They have a lot of really nice but not too expensive looking jewelry. Their store is really nice and net with lots of open areas so you can actually breath. The two girls that were working were really nice and super friendly. They let me look around in peace without bugging me or pressuring me to buy something; it was really nice to just to my thing.
