This was one of those days. My daughter had a craving for ho-fun (stir-fired rice noodle dish), so we opted to sample their beef option. The noodles were beautifully fried with great wok-hei and the velveted beef sliced were tender and easy to eat. The usual addition of green onion, bean sprouts and eggs made for a satisfying addition to our lunch. Overall flavour of the ho-fun was spot on and my daughter was happy. :) We'll be back to sample more of their abundant offerings soon!

The decor was extremely low-rent and sloppy, so I was immediately having doubts. (I remember thinking that the place looked like the "before" on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares.) After perusing their surprisingly robust menu, I decided to go with the Chef's Choice ("Imperial Roll, Fresh Salad with Chef's Choice proteins all marinated and grilled; served on Jasmine Rice"), and I got that with chicken as my protein. It arrived a little while later and it honestly looked pretty puny, especially considering the $18.99 price point. A very slim amount of sad-looking chicken, a small spring roll, and an almost comically tiny salad. (The latter was especially egregious, since I ate it in about three bites.) The food is fine. Everything was prepared pretty well; the rice was tasty and the edible pieces of chicken were tender. (Half the pieces looked really questionable, though, so I didn't even eat them.) The problem was that the whole thing was just so muted. There were no bold or interesting flavors, and the dish tasted like the chef stopped caring about his customers a long time ago. I'm fairly shocked Fresh Rolls has been around as long as it has. I can't imagine I'll ever go back.

But they change their recipe years ago it is like everyone else's now... no longer special. Large long spears of chicken white meat with a lemon sauce. Boring. So we don't order it anymore. They have lots of other good stuff still. And the dining room has been updated.

There was a good variety of vegetables, and the portions were quite large. However, the plate was so small that it was difficult to get to the food underneath if it wasn't on top. I don't understand why they couldn't simply use a bigger plate, which seems like the easiest solution after a renovation. The prices weren't as good as we had anticipated. Maybe we just didn't order the right dishes. They also offer dish combos, but instead of letting you choose the dishes, they have set combinations to choose from, very limited choices.

Small store front with 6 seats perhaps, patrons cannot see ingredients at all. No glass counter, no bright shop, little cashier counter and a door for the cashier and his kid to go back to the.. kitchen, i think. A review also mentioned its pricey, boy is it ever. For salmon poke it came out to be 17 bucks. I get that i pay for fish option, but for rice in the bowl was a whopping 8 dollars. As a Asian person, knowing how much rice typically cost, this is a bummer. The bowl was tasty, but is it really better than other poke places? No. Also, if you just overlook look the lack of/small amount of fish, lack of/ small amount of veggie, and 8- dollar rice. As i carried my little bowl out, I was disappointed. Next time, ill try somewhere else.

There are a couple of stools to sit at if you really want to eat in, but this is really a take out space. This is a Kosher Sushi place, meaning that you won't find any shellfish offerings. What you will find is some interesting pairings of fish, vegetables and fruits combined into roll. One of the things you'll find is that the chef uses pretty much the freshest ingredients available, with rice that has probably been cooked in the last few hours (think back to your last bad sushi experience and it probably relates to stale rice) and combination of textures and flavours to create unique offerings. For example, I'm allergic to fish, so for me veggie is the only option for Kosher Sushi, how about seared pineapple and cucumbers in your sushi? Sounds interesting... how about seared pineapple, avocado and jalapeno peppers? now we're talking.... If you know what you want, then order in advance and pick up, if you don't know what you want, you'll probably have to wait 10 or 15 minutes until you order is ready (but it'll be freshly made). There are a number of trays that you can easily purchase or you can have them make something of your own. We're frequent customers and we would be more frequent if we had more dollars and time.

There was one instance where my family ordered a bunch of laffas with different fillings and they just phoned it in by packing them with the same ingredients in each one. But this last interaction really took the cake for me. Long story short, my family or I won't be returning ever again. The largest issue I have with Kosher establishments in the GTA is that they are less focused on the food itself and more on the business side of things. There are times where I've eaten food that is so devoid of passion and care that it's a waste of money for me. That is exactly what happened to me and my family recently. Essentially, we ordered take out and hauled the food back up to where we live in Richmond Hill, it's about a 20-30 minute drive once everything is said and done. The bags were unpacked and we all began to tuck in. However, my mother in law's laffa smelled off as if something had turned. I took a sniff myself to confirm and I wouldn't have chanced it myself. So we called and asked if a credit could be applied as they are regulars to this location. The manager at the time offered little in flexibility noting that it was an hour from closing and that they wouldn't do anything unless we drove all the way back south to prove that something was wrong. We tried to explore all of the options possible that didn't end in eating a questionable laffa and wasting $20 down the toilet. The manager wouldn't budge and even suggested to bring it in the next day if we happen to be in the area. At this point, I had enough and brought the laffa down and made the trek in the middle of a family celebration as my diabetic mother in law was without a meal for the evening. When I presented the laffa to the staff, they themselves smelled the laffa (conveniently surrounded by other food to possibly mask anything they probably should have smelled) and said it was fine and that all the food was made fresh so its impossible. As someone who cooks daily for his family, I know what food that has turned smells like and what food I would possibly take a chance on. This is definitely not the case, there was something there that wasn't fresh. I'm sure they do try to ensure it, but sometimes things happen. I don't kick up a storm over things like this for fun. I also rarely ask for refunds when eating out, but this was a case where it was clear and I stood my ground. After some back and forth, the manager agreed to a refund as the $20 laffa included fries, so I only received $17. At the time, I had agreed to accepting it without knowing that we didn't receive fries with our order, so that was another issue I found out when I got home. In comparison to another restaurant we ordered from the same evening. On my way home from the pick up, I received a call to tell me they missed part of the order and immediately offered a credit the next time I was in. And that is the stark difference I'm talking about where I am beginning to notice that kosher restaurants in Toronto pick the business side of things over quality and the passion for food. I know this isn't a great time for restaurants and I know people are hurting. But customer service doesn't just go out the window because of the hard times we're all going through. Take care of your client base and they will take care of you. In this case, the management chose the $20 over a family of customers that were loyal and opted to go here over other kosher eateries in the city. For that, I am truly upset and could have been resolved in an easier fashion than this experience. Also, you can't label chicken satay on the Sharing Platter on your menu and also list it with Teriyaki in the description. They are two VERY different dishes from two VERY different cuisines. What you were looking for was Chicken SKEWER. Sorry, that was out of left field, but it's bothered me since I saw it and it's lived rent free in my head for a while. TLDR: We ordered, we picked up, one dish didn't smell great, we complained, they said to make the half hour trek down south to talk it over. I came back half an hour later, they said it was fine, it wasn't and I was short changed on the refund. I wouldn't recommend this place for the food or the service and that's kind of the point of going to a restaurant in the first place.
