I've lived here 20 years and my neighbors are discerning, some celebrities and sports figures and people with money to spend. Most everyone i know has said "we finally have a magazine that matches who we are". The only problem, is that I have to hurry out and find one, or they're all gone by the time i get there.

I've sought them out all over the country when I've lived elsewhere, and Phoenix's isn't the best, content-wise (sometimes surprisingly sparse), but it's still great. I pick up my copies either at Jam in Scottsdale or Essence Bakery in Tempe. Expect full page, well written articles by folks who certainly seem to know what they are talking about. I've only gotten 2 editions since finding them, but I've been pleasantly surprised in both. Little bit of "where we were" with lots of "where we are and where we're going". Great tips and general advise on gardening and fresh food trends. I already have a few places they recommended that I can't wait to try. I always say you can tell a lot about a magazine by it's advertisers. There are some great ones here. Lots of fun businesses that I hadn't seen advertised in many other places. And I'll say - I'm happy that they're keeping it simple in black and white vs. trying to make the advertisers pay more for glossy paper and a 5 color edition. This looks much more refined - and it helps to keep the advertising costs down for small businesses. Not to mention that whole better for the earth thing. I heartily recommend this as a great pick up. Read it while you lunch, while lounging on the sofa or keep it in the bathroom for some sophisticated "personal office" reading.

Self-declared as "relentlessly local coverage of Southern Chandler and our neighboring communities", the news features cover community theater, upcoming festivals, local impacts of impending legislation, puff pieces on local businesses, and school sports. With free publications such as these, I often get more out of the ads and hunt down restaurant coupons as an excuse to try new dining establishments (spoken like a true Yelper, ahem, gourmand). This newszine does not disappoint. I found plenty of buy-one-get-one-free offers and other enticing coupons for local eateries and food shops. They also have a respectable restaurant guide derived from the on-line resource www.chandlerlocalbites.com. Now that I'm better informed, I won't have to trek through Hell and Creation to find my nearest dining adventure. But I'm still gonna stick to my budget and save me some money on the meal. All the more reason to go a little nuts and splurge on drinks and dessert! (Yes... there is a method to my madness.)

Self described as "Arizona's luxury magazine for affluent desert living" it features everything you need to make it in Scottsdale. Honestly though, snootiness and kidding aside, it is pretty useful. They always have features on new restaurants and shops in the area, a fashion and style section, and information on events and day trips. The plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry ads are hilarious and the ads for million dollar homes make me drool.

Articles are relatively short so there are no worries that you'll get sucked into a long one (yes, that would be you New Times...) and suddenly you realize you should already be back at the office and you still need to eat half your sandwich. I have to say - I'm actually quite impressed. I've seen restaurants/stores advertised here that I'd never heard of before. I've read about festivals here that I hadn't heard about anywhere else. Music and movie reviews that aren't catering to "the man". And always a few articles about campus life or some other "it's cool with young people" article that cracks me up. Don't come here looking for a breaking news scandal or anything - unless that scandal has to do with bad food on campus. That article might even get a whole two pages. Well, 2 pages with really big pictures.

College Times is not just for college kids (damn, I'm sure the sales account executives aren't too…read morethrilled that *my* liking it undermines their demographic targets, but whatever). Granted, the first few pages would be of more interest to students, because there are pictures of local events and stories that a non-student wouldn't care about (e.g., transfers, class credits, courses, the bar scene, etc.) HOWEVER, setting all that aside, the "Calendar" section is still more informative and chock-full events than the New Times. (Yes, I'm referring to the 'dead tree' paper edition of College Times.) The 'dead tree' paper edition of New Times only lists one or two events per day. The 'dead tree' paper edition of College Times, by contrast, lists more events per day. So, their event listings are better. The 'dead tree' paper edition of College Times seems to have much better - not infinitely better, but noticeably more comprehensive - music coverage. In addition to featured new releases of the week, there's a "Weekly Six Pack" sidebar of notable new releases, and another sidebar for "Download This" suggested tracks to download. Their reviews also have "Similar Sounds" below the review, which seems to be like the "RIYL" (Recommended If You Like) tags you see elsewhere. Frankly, I've always found RIYL to be unnecessary. If you can't tell what a band would sound like without someone having to give you an example, you're either seriously musically illiterate or whoever wrote the review is seriously musically illiterate. It would be good if some of the features like "Weekly Six Pack" and "Download This" were available on the online edition.
