She chose to buy into Collington Life Care Community http://www.collington.com/ [non-profit CCRC] in [Mitchellville/Bowie, Md] in suburban Washington, D.C. Right away Mom plunged into lots of activities, planted the garden around her gracious cottage, took exercise and literature classes from Prince Georges Community College, on Collington Campus, and made friends with other active retirees and the very caring staff. She didn't partake of birdwatching, vegetable gardening, swimming, nearby golf courses, and some other outdoor activities. She chose to take on leadership roles in the Collington community and delivered Meals on Wheels. http://keepingupwithcollington.org/ When she broke her hip she was received rigorous and effective rehab while temporarily resident in the health center. When we 'made her' give up her car she was able to get to the Metro, shopping, doctors' appointments, Kennedy Center, Arena Center, and more via the Collington shuttle. When she had a small stroke she again moved back to he health center to receive rigorous rehab. Now she is back in her cottage, this time with a few hours of aides to help keep up her activities. Now as we spend more time walking the halls and grounds with her it's so gratifying to encounter numerous friends among the residents and staff who cheer on her recovery. I wish such stimulating, safe, and nurturing communities would be accessible for the growing upcoming senior population.

Using Collington transportation she had season tickets for the opera, the symphony, Arena Theater as well as enjoying many other cultural events at Collington and beyond. My 3 siblings and I fell in love with Collington's embrace of our mother and willingness to allow us to fully participate in Mother's life. In many, many ways through the years it became obvious to us that Collington valued its residents and wanted to encourage family involvement. The fabulous Sunday brunches, instituted by the head of dining services, Eli Ayoub are one of many examples. On any given Sunday one sees dozens of families, including children, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren enjoying the brunch together, feeding ducks on the lake. In these past two years, after a nasty fall, our mother was confined to assisted living. The care she received on Chesapeake was always compassionate and respectful. We grew to love each and every one of her caregivers. Again, we were encouraged to be there as much as possible. When the final days arrived our large family did vigil for a week. Instead of encouraging us to limit our visits, Eli arranged for a large hospitality tray to be delivered outside

However, the quality of care from all of the memory staff has been stupendous. I see firsthand that my mom is safe, attended to and cared for by all of the staff. The staff deeply cares for her as a beloved and sacred human being. We celebrated my mom's 86th birthday this past week at Sunrise and the staff took extra care to even put flowers in her hair. They excel at offering well-designed and clean facilities aimed at adult children looking for a safe place for their aging parents. Once you look beyond the sales pitch, you will quickly notice not everything is as it seems. The advertised teaser rates are for a compact studio without any services. Once they determine your "individual service plan" you can except to pay at least 2.5 to 3 times that for the monthly rent. Those fees will only increase over time and faster than the inflation rate. Make sure you are budgeting accordingly. Staff are friendly and engaging with residents. Meanwhile, management is operating on tight budgets and unrealistic corporate metrics. Expect frequent staff turnover. If your loved one is flexible, and engaging, they will be more likely to make friends and feel a sense of community, especially if family is not nearby. Meals are not as appetizing as they could be as they are required to cut corners to stay within their strict prescribed budget. The "vibrant" community doesn't feel that way given their dismal activity choices, but it looks impressive when touring the facility. Lots of repetition and "free is a good price" when you are sacrificing wellness for corporate profit. Sunrise functions like other for-profit senior communities. I encourage you to do your due diligence before making a decision. There are lots of considerations and just make sure you are fully educated and have answers to your questions in writing prior to agreeing to place there.

My mother is in the Memory unit at Kensington Park. She's getting very good care, around the clock…read more She likes the food a lot - much more than what her in-home caregivers used to prepare. There are musical performances and other cultural and healthful activities. It's difficult for anyone to adjust to a new environment, and even more so for an elderly person with dementia. The Kensington Park staff do their best to welcome and acclimate new residents - which, with the added problem of Covid, is a challenge. They are kind and attentive, dealing with irritability and other behaviors with grace and patience. The management is very open to communication from family members and every issue is addressed. Visits from family members are easily scheduled. It's a good place.

This was a direct lie to my face. Subsequently, I spoke to my friends' daughter who told me "since her mother broke her arm, she was not participating in activities, and was too tired from too many visitors. The supervisor's recommendation was no visitors other than once a week from each daughter, as per my friend. My friend is 97 yeaars old. The elderly NEED verbal stimulation, not isolation. My friend, the elderly lady, does not like this place and has expressed it in no uncertain terms. My experience with ideas like this ends in the life of the elderly person in less than 8 weeks. My friend (the daughter) has placed her mother in a prison because caing for her mother is an inconvenience.

Tl;dr: If you can afford it, this is absolutely the place for your loved one…read more We had to place our mother in a memory care facility rather suddenly after an unexpected deterioration (after a longer slow deterioration of several years while she still lived independently), and we feel so lucky that Silverado Alexandria was able to find a space for her quickly. During a traumatic time, the Silverado team (especially Lindsay, but everyone we interacted with) was a rock for us, giving us guidance, comfort, and resources. They have every level of coordination available, and we leaned heavily on them for help in getting our mother in and settled. Dementia requires such a different outlook than most health care, and it was a relief to work with a team that 'gets it.' The facility is clean and more like a nice hotel than a nursing home. They have a lovely little outdoor patio, and are planning to renovate to create more protected outdoor space for residents next year. Rooms and bathrooms are nice, no complaints there. You can bring in your own furniture or use theirs. My mom, after going in peacefully (we told her she needed to be monitored for a medical issue for a few days) had a rough first week. She was very agitated the first day, and constantly called us for days. Through it all, the staff was so kind and respectful to her, and gave us advice on how to respond. The whole thing was of course very painful for us, but the frequent updates and communication and advice we received from Lindsay, Dana and the team went a long way towards helping us cope. My mom did start to settle after a couple weeks, and after a month was eating meals with others, participating in activities, and sleeping well. Now that she has been there for two months, I can honestly say my mother is looking younger than she has in years. She was miserable at home, lonely and confused and bored. Now, she seems so much less stressed, even standing up straighter, and there are even fewer wrinkles on her face. Though when we visit she still wants to go back to her old life (me too, mom), she is now safe, healthy, and has so much more stimulation and engagement than she did isolated at home. She got physical therapy to strengthen her against falls, she socializes with residents and staff, and they even go on outings to local parks or historical sites! The staff take her (and others) on walks in the wooded cemetery next door whenever weather allows. The way the staff interacts with residents is inspiring. Every staff member is trained to handle dementia, and they are all kind and friendly and respectful. I've learned a lot from them about how to react and what to say when visiting my mom. These people really care. I'm trying to include as much info as I can think of, since when I was searching for facilities it really helped to read accounts from others who had gone through this. The place is spotless whenever I've been there. They're in frequent communication (we can text or email Lindsay anytime) and solve any issues promptly. The staff seem well-paid and glad to be there. They have a concierge doctor you can use before/during/after transition, if needed, but can move your loved one to the facility medical staff whenever you're ready. My mom says the food is good and they have great cookies. (One of the activities they do each week is baking/cooking!) Thanks to Silverado, I'm confident that my mom is receiving the best care and quality of life she could possibly have, and I know they'll continue to be there supporting her (and us) every step of the rest of the way. It's expensive and self-pay, but if your loved one can afford it, it's the best place in the area by far.

One year after my Mom passed away, we made the painful choice of moving my step-Dad into an assisted living/memory care community - and after visiting many different places ...well, we made the wrong choice! Go figure. We should've chosen Silverado... the great news is that he's there now! In December, 2019 we moved Tom from "Wrong Choice" Assisted Living Community to "Best Thing That Ever Happened" Silverado Memory Care after watching his physical and mental health spiral downward. When Tom arrived at Silverado he was catatonic, unresponsive, wheelchair bound and fed by hand; we weren't sure he would make it to the New Year. Who knew we were about to witness a Christmas miracle ... within ONE month - actually ONE week - Tom was back to his 'old self' -- walking, eating, laughing, thinking, solving, choosing, dancing, singing, engaging -- and oh ..even flirting {sigh} :) - Amazing how authentic care, true compassion and providing dignity and purpose can literally breathe life back into a soul.
