Tl;dr: If you can afford it, this is absolutely the place for your loved one…read more We had to place our mother in a memory care facility rather suddenly after an unexpected deterioration (after a longer slow deterioration of several years while she still lived independently), and we feel so lucky that Silverado Alexandria was able to find a space for her quickly. During a traumatic time, the Silverado team (especially Lindsay, but everyone we interacted with) was a rock for us, giving us guidance, comfort, and resources. They have every level of coordination available, and we leaned heavily on them for help in getting our mother in and settled. Dementia requires such a different outlook than most health care, and it was a relief to work with a team that 'gets it.' The facility is clean and more like a nice hotel than a nursing home. They have a lovely little outdoor patio, and are planning to renovate to create more protected outdoor space for residents next year. Rooms and bathrooms are nice, no complaints there. You can bring in your own furniture or use theirs. My mom, after going in peacefully (we told her she needed to be monitored for a medical issue for a few days) had a rough first week. She was very agitated the first day, and constantly called us for days. Through it all, the staff was so kind and respectful to her, and gave us advice on how to respond. The whole thing was of course very painful for us, but the frequent updates and communication and advice we received from Lindsay, Dana and the team went a long way towards helping us cope. My mom did start to settle after a couple weeks, and after a month was eating meals with others, participating in activities, and sleeping well. Now that she has been there for two months, I can honestly say my mother is looking younger than she has in years. She was miserable at home, lonely and confused and bored. Now, she seems so much less stressed, even standing up straighter, and there are even fewer wrinkles on her face. Though when we visit she still wants to go back to her old life (me too, mom), she is now safe, healthy, and has so much more stimulation and engagement than she did isolated at home. She got physical therapy to strengthen her against falls, she socializes with residents and staff, and they even go on outings to local parks or historical sites! The staff take her (and others) on walks in the wooded cemetery next door whenever weather allows. The way the staff interacts with residents is inspiring. Every staff member is trained to handle dementia, and they are all kind and friendly and respectful. I've learned a lot from them about how to react and what to say when visiting my mom. These people really care. I'm trying to include as much info as I can think of, since when I was searching for facilities it really helped to read accounts from others who had gone through this. The place is spotless whenever I've been there. They're in frequent communication (we can text or email Lindsay anytime) and solve any issues promptly. The staff seem well-paid and glad to be there. They have a concierge doctor you can use before/during/after transition, if needed, but can move your loved one to the facility medical staff whenever you're ready. My mom says the food is good and they have great cookies. (One of the activities they do each week is baking/cooking!) Thanks to Silverado, I'm confident that my mom is receiving the best care and quality of life she could possibly have, and I know they'll continue to be there supporting her (and us) every step of the rest of the way. It's expensive and self-pay, but if your loved one can afford it, it's the best place in the area by far.

One year after my Mom passed away, we made the painful choice of moving my step-Dad into an assisted living/memory care community - and after visiting many different places ...well, we made the wrong choice! Go figure. We should've chosen Silverado... the great news is that he's there now! In December, 2019 we moved Tom from "Wrong Choice" Assisted Living Community to "Best Thing That Ever Happened" Silverado Memory Care after watching his physical and mental health spiral downward. When Tom arrived at Silverado he was catatonic, unresponsive, wheelchair bound and fed by hand; we weren't sure he would make it to the New Year. Who knew we were about to witness a Christmas miracle ... within ONE month - actually ONE week - Tom was back to his 'old self' -- walking, eating, laughing, thinking, solving, choosing, dancing, singing, engaging -- and oh ..even flirting {sigh} :) - Amazing how authentic care, true compassion and providing dignity and purpose can literally breathe life back into a soul. They excel at offering well-designed and clean facilities aimed at adult children looking for a safe place for their aging parents. Once you look beyond the sales pitch, you will quickly notice not everything is as it seems. The advertised teaser rates are for a compact studio without any services. Once they determine your "individual service plan" you can except to pay at least 2.5 to 3 times that for the monthly rent. Those fees will only increase over time and faster than the inflation rate. Make sure you are budgeting accordingly. Staff are friendly and engaging with residents. Meanwhile, management is operating on tight budgets and unrealistic corporate metrics. Expect frequent staff turnover. If your loved one is flexible, and engaging, they will be more likely to make friends and feel a sense of community, especially if family is not nearby. Meals are not as appetizing as they could be as they are required to cut corners to stay within their strict prescribed budget. The "vibrant" community doesn't feel that way given their dismal activity choices, but it looks impressive when touring the facility. Lots of repetition and "free is a good price" when you are sacrificing wellness for corporate profit. Sunrise functions like other for-profit senior communities. I encourage you to do your due diligence before making a decision. There are lots of considerations and just make sure you are fully educated and have answers to your questions in writing prior to agreeing to place there.

Can I give 0 stars?…read more I visited the Memory Care of this facility and left so discouraged for anyone that has to live there and for the future of elder care in this country. It was so apparent that Sunrise is hyper-focused on money and not care. Ads inside the Memory Care living room for their insurance services, a giant check written to the "resident" when you walk in the front door, for $2000, I guess promoting the sale they have going on. Not once was the focus on what was best for the resident with memory care, or how they will make life a little easier for the care giver. Zero compassion. The person who gave my tour, Paul I think, continued to refer to me and introduce me to the staff by the wrong name. He also could not remember if I was looking for my mom or grandmother. Little details being missed like this make me concerned that keeping my mom safe is going to be a challenge. I really am not trying to be funny when I say this, but I felt like he was trying to sell me a car. He didn't act like he had any passion for the residents or the care of the elderly. He was following a script and using sales pitches that were outlined for him by Sunrise corporate. He even hinted at putting in a holding deposit to lock in the 15% discount they had going on. For those wondering, pricing is based on the level of care they determine your loved one needs. It is also based on the size of the apartment, and amount of pills they take. The rate ranges pretty significantly per month for these differences. They can also reevaluate at any time they want to, although he couldn't really explain when or why they would. When I asked about staffing ratios no answer was ever given. He continued to run around the question telling me it depends on need. I asked several times what that meant and still no answer was given. He couldn't even say that they meet state requirements. This was when I knew I would not have my mom live in this community. Another red flag, they do not have a nurse in the building 24/7. They have a nurse on call after hours, for anyone doing research this is not a good thing. This means that at any time something goes wrong when the nurse isn't in the building the care team will just call 911 and have them go to the hospital. For anyone that knows anything about Alzheimer's or Dementia a hospital visit or stay for someone can be devastating to their mental and physical well being, moving them further along in the disease much faster than they would have other wise. Laundry and house keeping once a week, a lot of places provide every day laundry, as memory care residents like to wear the same thing regularly, and house keeping 3 days a week or more as needed. When we visited the memory care unit, the bragged about activities calendar was not being followed, instead the residents were not engaging with anyone, just sitting around watching TV which I found very sad. Furniture had stains on it, and the fridge looked like it had been kicked in. The model room we saw smelled like there was a natural gas leak, and when I mentioned that, it was ignored. The rooms were pretty large, private bathroom, and mini fridge and counter to look like a little kitchen, but no appliances. Contrary to other Memory Care unites that provide studios so the residents are encouraged to not spend a lot of time in their room and engage in activities. Hey but at least when we left we were given a chocolate cream pie. I understand that paying for assisted living and memory care can be a challenging thing for many families but Sunrise doesn't seem to even offer a decent price for the lack of services they provide so I would continue to do your research and find a place with a flat rate that is a little higher but where they will focus on the right things, you and your loved one's well being

Every caregiver was always kind and compassionate and really cared about their residents. I asked one of them once if they had to take naps when they got home...the answer was "no, I really love my job". The place was definitely a home of loving and caring folks. The residents, who were in attendance, looked like they were happy to be here. I toured the entire property and two staged units. There were 3 levels in the assisted living units. I visited 2. There is also a memory care unit on a secured floor that I did not tour. This place is definitely a contender. for my loved one. I'm hopeful that the quality of care is as impressive as facility!

Having been in another facility where her care fell short of her needs, I searched the local area to find a facility that I thought could provide the care she needed. That led me to Poet's Walk which has turned out to be the right choice. From the moment that my family and I toured the Poet's Walk facility, seeing the staff at work with the patients, I was left with a feeling that they knew what they were doing and the level of care that my wife needed would be available. The staff works well with each other; each residence is assigned to a specific Care Partner. They assist each other as necessary for the proper care of each resident. In watching the care partners at work, most really show care for the residence. The building was thoughtfully designed. There are two U-shaped wings for the resident's rooms with a dining room for each wing. Each wing is connected to a central area that is called the Main Street. From the Main Street area there is an outside courtyard that allows the residents to enjoy being outside on nice days, surrounded and protected by the surrounding building. My wife and I often sit outside in the courtyard and enjoy being outside among the flowers, many of which are taken care of by the residence that have that ability. The Main Street area allows the residents to gather and enjoy the many programs that are designed for their abilities and pleasure. On my daily visits to my wife, I often watch them play games of different types and see the enjoyment they get from the entertainment often provided. Although my wife is unable to participate, she does enjoy watching the activities. My wife and I eat together daily at lunch. I really enjoy feeding her and look forward to our time together. She eats breakfast and dinner with the assistance of a care partner. The food is good and might be considered excellent for this type of facility. It has improved considerably over the past few months. Organization in the dining room has gotten better but patients is required by all as the staff must assist the residence to get to the dining rooms and then sort out the correct type of food for each resident. This all takes time sometimes causing a wait to eat. Poet's Walk is well managed. I see and talk to the different section directors, almost on a daily basis. They are always open to suggestions and strive to find a better way to do things, evidenced by the changes that have take place, always to the better. Is Poet's Walk perfect? Went to a networking event yesterday sponsored by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce…read more I thought "The Landing" was the name of a restaurant and as I approached this RESIDENTIAL neighborhood I had to double check my GPS to make sure I had the right address, because the facade looks like an apartment building. Maybe a hotel? Turns out, this event was hosted on the rooftop balcony party room of a...wait for it... senior living community. Huh??? This is not your average senior living community with the old carpet, weird smells, poor lighting and 1970s library furniture. No, no, no. This place is super upscale. Could easily be a new apartment building in some hipster neighborhood. Apparently they opened four months ago and they are in a marketing partnership with the Alexandria Chamber to help promote their facilities to seniors 62 and up. They have three restaurants, a game room, a movie theater, pools tables, wrap around panoramic city-view balcony, and a bunch of other stuff that would make anybody not be too upset to live here - regardless of age. The food was provided by the in-house chef, who made an appearance on season 2 of Pitmasters. He prepared some lobster rolls, quesadillas, and three signature drinks for all of us mixer guests. I went back several times for refills + more food, lol. They had a full bar too. Not that I plan to hang out here, but I wasn't mad at the networking, the views, or the food.
