I have had the pleasure of working at Heatherwood for nearly 3 years, and I can't imagine working anywhere else. Staff members are a closeknit group and work well together. The nursing staff are quick to team up and help each other out in order to provide residents with the support they need. The kitchen staff are very friendly and accommodating; somehow they remember residents' preferences and anticipate their needs at mealtime. The office staff is extremely efficient and handle everything from reprogramming TVs to problem solving myriad internal issues. Housekeeping staff are extremely hard working and seek to provide each resident with personalized laundry and cleaning service. Life enrichment staff strive to offer a variety of crafts, outings, entertainment, and creative outlets for residents to explore new areas of interest or revisit favorite activities. Maintenance staff provide the backbone for operations inside and outside; they prioritize safety and address issues expeditiously. Lastly, the in-house rehab staff (Legacy Healthcare) is very friendly and approachable, dedicated to keeping all residents (and staff!) safe and healthy. The moment you walk into Heatherwood, you encounter a friendly, welcoming atmosphere where everyone shares a community spirit and concern for each other. It's just that palpable. read more

Heatherwood is an incredible independent living and assisted living facility. Alissa Schroeder, the Community Relations Director, is simply amazing. She is warm, empathic and extremely caring. She took the time to learn about my mom, who we were considering moving there. She spent a great deal of time with me addressing my concerns and putting me at ease during a very difficult time. On 2 different occasions Alissa allowed me & then my husband & I to have lunch with different residents there. I was also allowed to participate in a couple of activities there so I could get a better feel for the facility and interact with the residents. Almost all of the residents I came in contact with seemed very happy to be there. The rest of the staff were also very caring - from the receptionist, Marsha, to the activities personnel to the aides and the staff in the dining room. All knew the residents by name and the warmth in the environment was evident. I would highly recommend Heatherwood if you are considering a warm and caring place for your loved one. read more

Several friends recommended Heatherwood to us when we were looking for a safe place for our Mom. We anticipated a difficult transition but were delightfully surprised by the family feel from all the staff - from the receptionist at the front desk to maintenance. Modifications to mom's apartment were made to make day to day living easier. She has friends she calls by name - she participates in daily activities and especially enjoys Bible study! To know she is being well cared for brings such a peace of mind. Every resident wears a beeper to call for help. Staff must be by her side to turn the notification off so attention comes promptly! We LOVE that Heatherwood is a smaller facility - if feels very much like a community to my mom. A wonderful physician visits weekly - seeing many patients and my mom loves that he is so accessible to her! I wish I could give them 6 stars! My husband and I recently visited our son in Virginia. While there, he suggested we look at Heatherwood should we ever need to move into a facility. We went to Heatherwood and met the Administrator, Susan Green. We spent a couple of hours with her and her staff and got to meet some of the residents. Everyone there was so nice and made us feel so welcome even though we told them that we were not going to be interested in moving anytime soon. We had lunch and it was great. The chef met us and served us personally. We also met the head nurse, Lisa. Her smile and answers to all our questions was so impressive. Susan also introduced us to David Skidmore, her co-worker and you could tell they worked well together. My husband and I would recommend Heatherwood to everyone. We never imagined a retirement home could be so nice. read more

Heatherwood is an excellent place to be if your looking for strong community. I just started working here almost two months ago and this has become a very rewarding career. Everybody that you run into has such a great personality and good heart. One thing I noticed is the staff are very compassionate towards their residents and the residents are very friendly as well! Getting to know everybody here has been such a rewarding and natural experience. The level of professionalism/care I see in the Nursing, Culinary, Maintenance, Concierge and our Management team makes me very proud to work here. I am very proud to be apart of the Life Enrichment team as well. My director and coworkers are very professional and give their all to every thing they do with the resident first in mind always. This is a lovely, homey retirement community. The staff are efficient, pleasant and solicitous. There are abundant activities for the residents including lectures, concerts and outings. I like the physical layout of Heatherwood with conversation areas on each floor. I was just there on July 4th for a picnic for residents and their families (indoor because of the heat). What an impressive menu: grilled hot dogs with a variety of toppings (bacon, shredded or sliced cheese, chili, chopped onions), hamburgers, grilled chicken, baked beans, Cole slaw, tossed salad, cornbread and dessert selections. Live music too! The receptionists are friendly and helpful. And the nursing staff is top notch. Our family has found the perfect place for our mother. read more

I'm a retired senior who has volunteered at numerous retirement communities in the Northern Virginia area for the past 10 years. My experiences with Heatherwood have been only positive, especially my contact with Debi Sweeney, Life Enrichment Director. She goes out of her way to make the volunteer experience rewarding and appreciated. Watching Debi interact with the residents, I am impressed with her caring and gentle manner. This is a community that my wife and I would strongly consider making our home if and when we require more assistance with our activities of daily living. read more

I recently visited my mother in law at Heatherwood Retirement Community, I was very pleased with the facility. The staff was professional and courteous which gave me a sense of warmth believing and knowing that my mother in law was being cared and respected for. The facility was clean and refreshing and did not give me a sense of an institution. It had a welcome atmosphere that I was pleased to encounter. We needed a place to move our Aunt who lived in NYC, on very short notice. Heatherwood offered us respite care for up to 3 months. Our Aunt is very picky and was used to living in a fancy NYC highrise. When she came to Heatherwood she was overwhelmed by the cheerful apartment, helpful staff, activities and meals. She is now enjoying the activities, making friends and thinking about making this a permanent living situation. Heatherwood is a great place to be! The staff is friendly and helpful. I love the fact that there is a nurse on duty 24-7, it makes me feel more secure about having my grandmother here. They do so many fun activities that she sometimes has a hard time choosing! They have some of the best entertainers come, there is at least one every week. The building has a nice cozy feel to it, you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. We are so glad we found Heatherwood. read more

I have visited Heatherwood on several occasions and had the opportunity to talk with many of the residents. Without exception, each one had only good things to say about the facility and the staff. When my mother moved into Heatherwood we thought it was a wonderful retirement community. She loved the residents, the food, and all the wonderful activities. As mom aged and her health declined, we were delighted with the extraordinary care Heatherwood provides. Their healthcare staff is amazing. The entire staff has been so friendly and welcoming, and I love that there are a wide variety of activities, classes, and amenities to keep the residents engaged. I've seen them offer everything from flower arranging classes to cornhole tournaments to lessons on the history of jazz piano. The building is clean, bright, and superbly maintained. You would never have guessed we were dining in a Senior Living Community. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave great recommendations.
