I went a couple of weeks ago & pre-ordered a book that was only being sold at certain independent bookstores so I went to support one in my Boro. When I arrived at the store to pick up my book I was shocked the lady told me "I underpaid" when I ordered. I said I paid what I was charged. She proceeded to tell me I underpaid by 1 cent. I'm digging in my bag looking for change of course I have none & she's like well you can use your card. I had no change & was by myself so I paid with my card. When I left I told myself I would never make another purchase there. The employee undercharged me, I didn't put the price in when I ordered. During a time when the country is not even making penny's to be insistent on one turned me off from this business. read more

The best book store + wine bar in the city. They have a great selection of books by Black and Latino authors in a wide range of genres which I have found hard to come by in other books stores. Plus the vibes are always chill and the employees are super kind, helpful and inviting. I love the author readings/ events they host. They've hosted people like Taraji P. Absolutely LOVED!!! We recently went to the lit bars anniversary and we had a blast. Although the weather conditions did not permit for the books to be sold outside the owner accommodated everyone inside. This was my 2nd time visiting and the first time I got to sit in the back and read. The book selection here is phenomenal. The back area has lounge couches to sit and drink as you read. It isn't the quietest bookstore due to the music playing, but it is comfortable and welcoming. read more

I love "first visits"! Whether it is a new restaurant in town or a city I've never been to, the thrill and anticipation of those unique moments of exploration are my favorite. That said, knowing that I was headed to the Bronx for but a couple of days I had to make the "places to go" list short. And the Lit. Bar was one of the first on it. Being as how I am one who loves to read, who could simply sit in a bookstore all afternoon on a rainy day, a poet, passionate about social justice, and an occasional dabbling in a quality glass of Malbec this was a must. You'll know you're at the right place when you see the mural out front with the text, "Reach the World, but Touch the Hood First." The symbolism of the child spray painting that message while standing atop two books is awe inspiring. And the place is set up just like the name; bookstore in the front and wine bar in the back. But first, some history. The Lit. Bar opened in 2019 due to the lack of brick and mortar bookstores in the Bronx. Since then, it has only went up! Visits from celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and a interview with President Obama, and numerous press releases including Oprah Magazine. You will quickly notice the book selection is carefully curated, including my favorite section "Classics (not up for debate)." And while picking up a book (or three), go ahead and find a seat in the back. With a wine bar that could stand on its own, you owe it to yourself (right?) to enjoy a glass. Also, it's the perfect spot to snap a new profile pic. I left with a book and a t-shirt ("READ OR ELSE"). And I look forward to returning soon. Such a cute place ! I worked in the south Bronx for 3 years and it saddens me that I have never been to this "lit bar". I purchased two books and was able to navigate this beautiful store and ask questions when needed. The employees are very kind and easy to talk to. I am so excited. I just purchased the book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism and I'm looking forward to receiving it in the mail. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, I was unable to walk into the store but the website was easy to navigate, there was a wide selection of books to choose from, and it was an overall great shopping experience. I look forward to meeting the employees and taking a look at the store in person once it's safe. Also for anyone who is interested, they have digital gift cards and they raised over 10 million dollars for local bookstores. The books were also sold at a great price. A long overdue book store in The Bronx! This is an excellent space to browse, shop, chat, or sit down and have a drink. The shelves are clearly labeled and organized, and the interior decor is very minimalistic with a few thoughtful details that make it feel cozy even as it has high ceilings and a coolness in the air. Their children and young adult fiction sections include a lot of currently popular authors. They also have a few selections of authors who are a bit off the beaten path, which is refreshing. I have been following this bookstore on IG for sometime and was finally able to visit in person this past weekend. Some fun facts about this book store: it is the only independently owned bookstore in the Bronx and it is owned by a LatinX woman. What a beautiful bookstore and the selection of book is A+. I spent about and hour just browsing through the books and asking the lovely and well knowledgeable young lady working on the day I visited recommendations. They have a cute little bar set up in the back (closed at the moment due to Covid) I can't wait to in the near future attend readings and events. I love this bookstore and have ordered books online and purchased in-store when I've just wanted to browse and be inspired. They have a great in-store selection and the staff is so friendly and approachable. They were able to take a vague "I want something contemporary, I recently read XYZ book" and translate it to amazing recommendations. The children's book selection is also well-edited, I was able to find picks that my 5 and 7 year old niece and nephew loved easily. read more

I just love this bookstore! I happened to be nearby for a birthday party and had wanted to check out The Lit Bar for some time. I was pleasantly pleased that I could walk right over from where we were eating. The mural outside is the first thing that caught my attention. It's stunning up close to see. And then entering to see another was just amazing. Both beautifully done! Beautiful brown skinned girls! The Lit Bar has the coolest displays with creative section titles to draw you in. I browsed for a long time just looking at the variety to choose from. The children's section was also full in the selections to shop from. The bar at the back was such a great touch. Places to sit and chat. I can imagine people coming on the weekend just to read and relax. The tree shirts and sweatshirts with inspiring sayings were also a nice touch. I didn't purchase one at the time and regretting it now. I settled on a book and made my purchase. I loved the vibe and atmosphere. I really love the concept, decor, and layout of this place. Who wouldn't want to quietly come and read a book and drink wine. It's literally a perfect idea. It has so many books of all types by authors of color it's inspiring. I also love that it's next to very good food / drink options in the area so you can carry on with your night. I actually went to a book signing hosted by Lit Bar at Lehman college and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The thing I hope they will one day have is pastries/ sweets. I would love to sit with a book, drink a glass of red wine, and snack on a chocolate brownie. They had nuts but no sweets. I think That would be a great addition. My visit was within a few months of opening so there was room for growth (additional stock). The price hike for Mamba Mentality is disrespectful and makes me question the business practices of The Lit Bar Bookstore. Barnes and Nobles is selling this for $35 as they should. I can understand a price hike in the event of someone's passing but how are we getting to $74.99 plus tax from $35. I called to get an understanding of this difference and was informed that is the price regardless of Kobe Bryant's passing. Also, they are not the only business in the city that has this book but I was looking forward to supporting a Bronx business. A MUST go for all readers. You look at the way the books are organized by their curated genres/titles/categories, you feel the love behind them. You can sit in the bar area and be browsing for hours and I leave feeling like my soul is full. I've gone with a group handful of times and when we go, we always find a gem. What stands apart from other basic bookstores in the city is that THE LIT BAR is blackowned and there's black books for black children plain in sight on the shelves and not a "special order" request at all these other nyc bookstores. I particularly liked how they highlighted local and NYC authors, and a few of the books were actually signed as well which was really cool. The bookkeep provided a suitable recommendation for my friend and I appreciate how knowledgeable she was. Cool bookstore in the South Bronx with an emphasis on Black and Latino writers, especially autobiographical content from popular cultural figures. The rear has a small seating area with tables and an actual bar for ordering alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. I enjoyed the vibe in here and the musical selections that played in the background were a nice touch while I browsed the aisles. I could see spending a few hours here on a lazy Saturday, catching up on some reading or even killing some time while waiting for a table at the nearby eateries, as my friend and I were doing. This place makes my heart happy. I was able to pick up some great books and sit down for wine with my cousin. (Sounds perfect, right?) I was super excited to visit THE ONLY BOOKSTORE IN THE BRONX!!! There's a great selection of books as well as pro-literacy merchandise and other items. But I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the bar. The only adult beverages that are available are beer and wine. That's perfect because I love reading a book with a glass of Pinot Noir. This place is everything The front of the store is a bookstore. Lots black classic novels, and the cutest kids section. I bought books for my friends who had baby boys. My favorite purchase was a baby book called "Stay Woke" They offer gift wrapping for free. There's a small bar in the back where you can sip on wine. Next door is Beatstro where you can grab food - great for a date night in the BX.
