Led by the Communities for a Better Environment organization (www.cbecal.org/), the Toxic Tour is designed to show the effects of pollution on marginalized communities in the county. The tour starts inside the CBE office where we get information showing the relation of people of color to Toxic Release Facilities in Los Angeles County and let me tell you, I was shocked to find out the % of homes, schools, places of business next to facilities they had no business being next to, specifically in Southeast Los Angeles in communities like Vernon, Commerce, Huntington Park, Maywood, etc. While on the tour itself, we drove through a section of Vernon called "Asthma Town" which was given that moniker because of the high percentage of residents in that part of town who became asthmatic as a result of living there. We stopped at a site of what was known as the"Mountain of Death" in the city of Huntington Park. This is the site of where a mountain of concrete collected from freeway damage during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Residents got sick from breathing airborne debris coming from this site. It took the initial efforts of resident, Linda Marquez, to finally bring attention to what was happening and yet, it took 10 years to finally clean up the whole site. Although there is already one power plant in Vernon, we were told about a proposal to build a second larger 943-megawatt fossil fuel burning power plant, less than a mile from several schools and residential neighborhoods. The plant is projected to emit 881 tons of pollution each year (= 1.7 million pounds). We also took a trip to Wrightwood where we learned that "flaring", both smoke and water vapor emissions that come out of the refineries in the South Bay are only suppose to happen under emergency conditions; yet, flaring happens on a daily basis. Unfortunately, flares while helpful can also produce dangerous air pollutants such as sulfur oxides, which some residents blame for incidences of asthma and even cancer. There was even more information that was mentioned that could possibly be written in this review, so if you want to know more, you should check out the Toxic Tour for yourself. I thought a "behind the scenes" art tour would be right up her alley. I consider myself pretty plugged in to the LA art scene - however, I was referred to a company that I had never heard of - ART MUSE LA. Art Muse Los Angeles is a community of art historians, artists and educators who offer small groups private art tours - in museums, galleries, artist studios and private collections - throughout the LA region. What a stroke of luck! I was put in touch with Clare Kunny, the owner and Director. She was incredibly charming, smart, and approachable on the phone. I told her I was looking for a curated art tour, something more than your typical museum docent tour. She emailed me with several fantastic, diverse ideas. I opted for a two-hour tour with a theme around women in the arts. Our guide, Susan Power, was incredibly knowledgeable. She highlighted contributions to American art of the LA-NYC gallerist Virginia Dwan at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Then we walked across the street to Spruth Magers gallery to tour the exhibition POWER displaying art made by African American women from the Civil War era to the present. Susan gave an in depth talk on both subjects in conjunction with her choosing select artworks that showed the strength of and vision of these women artists. My mother and her friends were blown away. She is still talking about it. If you're looking for something interesting, fun, and unique to do in LA - for a date night, for something to do for fun with friends, for a special occasion - I highly recommend checking out Art Muse LA. Our tour guide, Jared, was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the landmarks and neighborhood, and the current states of the spaces that we visited. The tour was very engaging and I loved the use of personal headsets and the big tablet he wore to show us clips of the films while we were standing right at the spot where the scene(s) were shot. Fun!

Beyond that though learned so much more...lived in CA my whole life and learned many fascinating things in just 90 minutes. It was an easy walk, not difficult at all.
