To be honest, I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did, especially after the emergence of all the streaming services out there now. Years ago, like millions of other people, I found their penny deal to be irresistible. I was only a kid, so having music delivered to my door, as opposed to begging for a ride to go to the record store, AND getting it for next to nothing was a dream come true. ...That is, until it was time to pay the piper! It was a well known fact that they would make up for those nearly free albums by charging much higher prices for subsequent ones. Although I can't remember the exact details, somehow, someway I avoided buying any additional albums, while still keeping the (almost) free ones. What I haven't forgotten were the very stern lectures from my angry parents on the importance of financial responsibility. All that scolding I endured was totally worth it though. I was able to expand my music collection at a time when it was much more difficult and costly to do so. And for that I'm actually grateful to Columbia House.

Legions of American teens (including myself) signed up for the unbelievable front-end offer and then became amnesic to the responsibility of buying additional music at grossly inflated prices. It's a wonder the company lasted so long. Basically, you'd load up on Jethro Tull, Stevie Wonder and Aerosmith for a penny and then refuse the monthly shipment of Christopher Cross, Maria Muldaur and The Little River Band until Columbia gave up. Hell, we were 15, who cared. Five stars for much simpler times.

Service was great. I had question about some crystals. The young man working let me know he didn't know much about crystals but his girlfriend did and she would at work the next day. I don't know much about the label or mail order business at all, but I can safely say that Parasol's storefront carries the best, and extremely well-edited, selection in town for indie and punk vinyl, CDs, and DVDs. Just the latter alone! You can buy the Kill Rock Stars Video Fanzine III, live performances from Coachella, and documentaries about freestyling, K Records, or even that one about early California hardcore, which features far too much footage of TSOL. There are also bins full of seven-inches, and a decent-sized collection of $1 vinyl and CDs. Much time could be successfully killed here. Anywhere I can buy the A-Frames Black Forest LP, and peruse seemingly endless back issues of Mojo, is aces in my book. They'll also special order anything you want, which means that I won't have to save my shopping list for trips to Chicago's Reckless!

As someone who likes picking through vinyl for a good deal, I was super pleased to find the many bins of Clearance Vinyl along the floor under the main shelves of records. There is a ton of "old stock" new vinyl under there, many that have been marked down to well under $10. I'm really into mid 2000s vinyl and I found a good chunk of things I've been looking for down there, still sealed, waiting over a decade for me to pick through it. Stop by and give the place a look. You'll hopefully find something worth stopping by for. And while you're in, check out the insane selection of other things. The overall shop is a mixture of a head shop, record shop, bookstore, novelty store, jewelry store, and comic book store, and it seems to go on forever. I noticed a mix of musical instruments scattered through the shop and the man working was busy setting up something towards the back. He did greet me, but pretty much did his own thing back there while I browsed. The records were generally alphabetical, but grouped in genres. I figured it out since the genre type was not prominent unless you looked at titles. I saw they also carried some movies and cd's, but those seemed to be completely random without any sorting. Although they have a lot of vinyl here, I will say that I've found more organized and helpful places in the Indy metro area than here.
