The Looking Glassy Skillet is his favorite and I like to try various things so tried the Avocado toast and it was amazing! We dropped in after some research after my wife's first choice had it's kitchen closed. My son came down from up north, and we met him half way in Janevilles for a Mothers Day Lunch. Reservations? Nope. You arrive, check in, and they seat you when a table opens up. They do have outdoor seating, but I dressed for the forecast weather, not the actual weather, so that didn't work. For our breakfast, my son and I both ordered the Cheesecake Waffle, while my wife ordered one of their specials, which was the Fat Elvis Special, which was a waffle with peanut butter, almonds and bacon. She gave me a taste of that - it was certainly very "Elvis" like. We did order their Beer Cheese Dip appetizer, which was nice nacho-type chips with nubs of beer pretzels. The queso dip was okay, the cheese dip was also just okay. Plenty in the plate though. They had 18 beers on tap, which was very nice. Between the coffee and mixed drinks and beer, we all left quite satisfied. read more

I came here for an event, and it was a cute little space! Luckily, for how packed it was, they have a great side yard that is a patio for seating and an additional bar space. Inside is smaller and has a long bar with some seating along the sides. I ordered a burger and fries while there and it was delicious! I cannot wait to come back and try more! read more

I had heard good things about this place, so I had been planning on going at some point to see what all the fuss is about, and also to get a review in on a local place, so that finally happened today!! Was meeting someone here for the first time time in real life, after talking online with a a fella that lives in the same town that I do, and he suggested that we go to the Looking Glass, and I said hell yeah, let's do it! Foolishly, I didn't take photos of the establishment itself, but it's much, MUCH smaller than I had thought it would be. Much smaller. It's possibly the size of two bedrooms? About half the seating is at the bar, and we had to wait for that when we first got in, because that's how busy they were at noon on a Sunday when they're serving their brunch menu! But then he had a friend there who left, and we were able to grab the seating that that guy was at. I asked what kind of hard cider they had, they told me pineapple agave. It sounded really good and appealing, so I ordered it, but it was surprisingly bitter, almost like sugary bile? Not quite sure I would recommend it. I perused the menu for quite some time, and damn near everything on the brunch menu features MEAT. I checked the website for the full menu to see if they had any meat alternatives/faux meats like impossible burgers or beyond burgers or beyond brats but no such luck. I just ordered a side of regular fries, because it's pretty hard to mess that up! It was a very, VERY large portion of fries, would have been enough to feed me and one other person, at very least. My date ordered the LG Gridle, which is sausage, bacon, eggs cheese, between two pieces of French toast, and comes with a serving of hash browns. If I were an omnivore who ate pork, I can see the appeal, for sure, but as is, no way. I'm sure it was delicious though. He had some kind of imperial stout beer and coffee for his first drink, and got something else for his second one, and I got a PBR in a can for my second one. I picked up the tab (like a real gentleman lol ) before that awkward pause and question about one tab or two was asked by our server, Emma, who was great, as attentive as she could be, given how packed it was in there! I thought I'd try to seem like I had places to be, things to do, and my date just said, "thank you, you didn't need to do that" to which I said I know. I don't know if I would come back here for food, or in the DAYTIME, but if they're still open at night, it truly seems like it'd be a decent beer bar later on at night? Smaller, intimate setting. Seems legit for that. But when it's packed like that for brunch, I can't hear myself think, much less what my date is saying! Damn. I don't need to make this harder for myself. But I guess other people really, really love it, and think it's worth it. And, to be fair, despite the place being super busy, and there only being three bartenders/waiters, ours (Emma) managed to be very attentive to us, and checked in with us regularly, asking if we needed anything, if we wanted to order more drinks, got me a to go box for my fries, made sure we had enough napkins, and that we were enjoying our food. Since my date came in frequently, he and her even made small talk for a while at one point, since they're familiar with each other on a semi social level. Not the best, not the worst. read more

Had a family dinner "get together" here! Everyone is from out of town so we didn't have any idea what to expect. First of all it's primarily a bar. The menu is mostly bar food (but has some breakfast/brunch items). The owner and wait staff were very friendly and courteous to say the least! I ordered the Montana Burger and fries and a Bloody Mary. Definitely delicious and plentiful. Parking is limited on the street but they have a big parking garage. We stopped for dinner Saturday night after going to Janesville Renaissance Faire and unbeknownst to us, there was also a wine walk going on in the area also and it was absolutely packed. We fully expected long waits, etc. but service was fast and the food was excellent. Went here on a Friday night after a recommendation from a friend and because we had a BuckyBook coupon. I am glad we made this decision, and can't wait to go back next time we are in Janesville. The staff was super friendly and when we walked in told us to grab whatever table became available. It's first come, first served/who can grab tables the quickest. We decided to eat at the bar, as that was easier. They had quite a fun tap list, including one beer that was green, which I still haven't figured out what that was. As for the food, there were too many good sounding options that we will have to go back. I ordered the turkey wrap with the beer battered fries. It was packed with shredded turkey and not overly dressed with ranch on the inside. Pretty much exactly what I want in a wrap! The fries were nice and crisp. My friend ordered the burger of the day which was a burger with pepperjack and bacon mixed in the meat, fried pickle spears, lettuce, tomato, flavorful aioli all on a pretzel bun. He got sweet potato fries which were also nice and crispy, just how we like them. The burger was very good, although we were surprised by the pickle spears. Had a great brunch here after hiking on the Janesville segment of the Ice Age Trail. I have not spent much time in Janesville but my friend found this place in her Bucky Book. This is one of the best places ever! We started with the Signature Beer Cheese. The pretzel sticks were deep fried but soft, the tortilla chips were hot out of the fryer. They were perfectly crisp without being overdone. My husband had the Italian Beef with waffle fries, he said the roll and the beef were tender and flavorful, done to perfection. I had the Shrimp Po Boy. All I can say is wow! The shrimp were hand breaded and deep fried, no frozen seafood here. The spicy ranch was perfect, it had a bite but wasn't burn your tongue out hot. Super sweet spot in downtown Janesville, they have indoor and outdoor seating, great bartenders and servers, especially Amy K! Friday night, a little busy, but not terrible, s E acted right away, drinks right away, everyone said their rum punch was noteworthy. I stuck with Wisconsin's famous old fashioned. We asked for food menus and they promptly brought them, came back, took or order of white cheese curds for an appetizer and the 2 piece fish fry. They brought out our curds and served them to the wrong table. The table let them know of their mistake and they brought them to us. No one touched them. Piping hot and meaty with a side of ranch! So good. The fish came out and again they tried serving it to the wrong table. Realizing the mistake, they brought it to us. The fish was lightly battered, I ordered sweet potato fries, came with coleslaw, tartar sauce and a slice of marbled rye toast cut in the diagonal, which was weird to me and I'm still puzzled by the bread choice. Stopped in The Looking Glass for a late lunch. The food was okay, nothing to rave about. Our waitress however was not good. We sat for 20 minutes before she came to our table and actually waited in a table that sat after us before she stopped by. After we were done we waited another 30 minutes before I finally had to wave her down... but she wouldn't look over at the table and pretended she couldn't hear me. The place was not busy, she was just hanging at the bar. A little courtesy goes along way. I doubt we'll be back. read more

This is my old stomping ground from when I was in my early 20s and I have to say, when I found out they were redoing it I was VERY skeptical and not excited about the change. The first time I went in after the renovations, I was still unsure. After this last time, I absolutely approve. They are going for a sort of old timey saloon a little classy a little funky vibe, and I have to say they are nailing it! Our bartender was fantastic and it was LEGIT one of the best Bloody Marys I've had. Mind you, I don't like the ones that have an entire meal on top. This one was a classic with green olives. Thick and spicy. It was delicious! The natural light is fantastic and I love all of the decor. It's always been one of my favorite spots with some of my favorite bartenders and I think the renovations have just made it better. Go to the Glass! read more

Service took awhile, the music reminded me of a middle-aged mom's workout playlist and the smoking outside definitely became overwhelming, but overall it's nice that The Looking Glass is back and open for business. As someone who was born and raised in Janesville only back for a few days, it was cool to see a bunch of unfamiliar faces enjoying the nice weather and engaging with a local business.
