The Lunch Basket recently opened and I couldn't wait to try it out. Upon arriving, we grabbed a tray, plate, silverware and proceeded down the line. There was mass confusion. We were responsible for serving ourselves and there was no one to direct us. It is not a buffet, so we had no idea how much food we were allowed to put on our plates. For either $10 or $12 (depending on the meat), you get a meat, 2 sides, a bread item, drink and dessert. Several items were completely out. A guy finally came to refill the fried fish and I had to ask him how many pieces we were supposed to get. If it wasn't for the fish, I probably would have left because none of the other meat items looked appealing. The fish was large and nicely seasoned. I opted for the sweet potatoes and macaroni & cheese. The sweet potatoes were good and macaroni tasted like a typical boxed recipe. We also had a choice between a roll or cornbread. The rolls were hard and not that great. I chose a bottled diet coke, because the fountain drinks were colorful and sweet looking, and I wasn't interested in drinking so much sugar. The desserts on the line didn't look appealing, but one of the staff told us that we could choose from various cakes as we got closer to the check out. What I saw next was inexplainable! I looked at the area with the cakes and it was in complete disarray (look at my pictures). There was a guy cutting store bought cakes and putting them in individual containers. The area was messy and the entire setup was unprofessional. While we were eating, I looked over to the food line and a guy was stirring food with one hand and talking on his cellphone with the other. Again, very unprofessional and unsanitary. One of the waitresses was also constantly drinking in front of the drink machines. The only plus worth mentioning is that the restaurant itself is nicely decorated. This place has a long way to go, so I'm not certain I'll be returning. read more

Absolute trash. First there is no pricing on anything. So he makes up whatever they want to charge you. I was told you get two meats and two sides and a desert for free. The lady was nice and friendly and she stated she was not for sure on all the rules so she was asking other associates for assistance. I ordered porkchops, mashed potato, cheesy potatoes. I then got blackeye peas extra. Banana pudding for desert. A different young lady approached me asked me, "what did I want to drink". I said water and she said I will get you a table. When I seen my plate there was only one pork chop. I asked "I thought you said two meats" a different girl stepped up and said "no you can only have one pork chop". Ok, I'm still good with that because the food did look good. I went to pay and the guy said 14.00 dollars and some change. I said I only got water not a drink. He said it didn't matter, I said that's kinda high for one pork chop isn't it. He said he didn't think so and wanted to know where there were better prices. And he said a burger cost 12.00 dollars now. I told him I don't eat 12.00 burgers and just ate at Gino's yesterday. For the record their burger was 5.88. The youg lady brought over my banana pudding and he charged me for another side. We were up to 16 dollars and change by now, nothing was ok. As I sit down and counted the sides he charged me for four sides as I looked at the receipt. I asked the young lady how many sides did she see she said three. She went to correct it and she came back and said he said the Banana pudding wasn't free since I got three sides. Remember now I paid extra for the blackeye peas already. I could only think wow this crazy. This guy just makes stuff up. I went to the table, I set down took a bite of the cheesy potatoes and realized they were poured right out of a can and cheese loaded on it. Pitiful. Took a bite of the mashed potatoes tasted like box, but I will admit wasn't terribly with the gravy. Took a bite of the black eye peas, mushy with no flavour. I thought maybe the porkchop would save the meal. Nope, it was a thin cut tough with lots of fat and cold. Not good at all. I got up to leave and thought maybe the Banana pudding would be good, so I turned around and took a bite. It was super breaddy but had descent flavor. I then picked up my tray, went to him and said this is not good food. Opened the trash can and dumped the entire meal. I told him his service was trash his food was trash and it belonged right were I put it. Don't waste your hard earned money on this place. Great wait staff. Although it's setup is a buffet don't overfill your plates or you will be charged whatever the owner deems. It was posted you can get two pieces of chicken but when getting to the register he charged me extra for having a breast. You can go from thinking you have a $10 meal to be charged much more at his discretion read more

I went back to try it again. Very disappointed this go around. Pork Chops were very dry only could eat half The rest was hard as wood. Both sides the greens and cabbage were not cooked all the way and lacked seasoning as soul food should have. They gets an F this go around. Went back today 06102019. Got 3 pork chops greens and cabbage....I should be filled but pork chops were barely eatable. Very dry and tough....I got there at 1135am so they should have been fresh. The food was good...let me tell how it went.. Came in I explained this is my first time so tell me how this goes. Server A: It's 1 meat and 2 sides with a dessert and drink or if you want to substitute your dessert for another side for $11.99. Me: Ok I will have 2 plates please and a kids meal chicken strips and fries. On my first plate I will take dressing, pepper steak, Mac n cheese and peach cobbler. My next plate will be ribs, Mac n cheese, broccoli, and substitute the dessert for a side of pasta salad. Is that right? Server B: Yes that is correct. Owner: This is yours. Me: Yes these 2 meals and a kids meal. Owner: Your total is $46.xx (I can't remember the change part I didn't get a receipt) Me: Oh no I only have 2 plates and a kids meal. Owner: The pasta salad cost $1000 to make alone and by itself it cost $3.99. Me: Well I was told that you could substitute dessert for another side. Server B: She did tell her that. Owner: No she know better than to say that. (Screams to the back did you tell her that) Server A: No I didn't say that. Server B: Oh no she didn't say that. Owner: This plate with the ribs is $14.99 and this with the pepper steak is $11.99. Me: I didn't make this up and I'm not lying. (Paid and lesson learned I take full responsibility and will not happen again..but even with those totals it is not adding up to $46) To make it a better experience they should post prices and having a better attitude as an owner as well as listening to our customer and giving a receipt(tax 8%). Confusing layout. I just started putting small servings of lots of stuff on my plate and ended up being... $16(!) I wish I'd taken a pic- like a fish piece and a half. A piece of sweet potato. Tiny scoop of beef stew stuff over mash potatoes. Thought it was a normal buffet... like $10.99 for whatever you want one trip. they should put some sort of notice that's its one meat and 2sides or whatever and I could have served appropriately. In buffets I normally get a small serving trial of lots of stuff then go back for what I like... Maybe they had something posted but I just didn't see it anywhere as we snakes around and entered what initially looked like the kitchen. Food was good and salty soul food. I've been to the Lunch Basket in Belzoni so I knew the serving routine. I grabbed my plate and tray and served myself like I usually do. At the Lunch Basket you fix your own food and I love fixing my own food. I had my usual which included pork chops, yams, and macaroni and cheese. I sat down at a booth and waited for my waitress to bring my drink. My waitress, Jasmine arrived promptly to bring my drink. She was extremely nice and professional. The food was AWESOME!!! The owner said he fixed it himself! The pork chops were nicely seasoned and tender, the macaroni and cheese was delicious, and the yams tasted like Heaven! I loved my experience at the Lunch Basket and I'm so glad they opened a restaurant in Greenville because I no longer work in Belzoni. I can't wait to go back! I think I will drive to Greenville today and enjoy some of that good soul food! God please continue to bless the Lunch Basket because I love that place and the food is AWESOME!!!!!!!! read more
