I didn't get a chance to look at the prices, so I can't speak to the value. It's a breath of fresh air for a winter warmer wander. My visit here was on a Monday, early afternoon. I came for succulent potting soil and soil amendments. Inside, there's a nice increase in humidity and warmth (I came on a cold winter day), and array of colorful plants and pots. There were a steady stream of customers coming in and out for custom plantings, gifts, repotting advice, and something green and growing to brighten up a room. There's a nice selection of small succulents, some midsize tropical plants, a few larger show-stoppers and much more. They also sell seeds for indoor herb gardens and growing micro greens. A fun things I learned is they have spagnum moss-covered sticks to support vertical gardening! I got some great advice from two friendly folks working there that afternoon, along with a couple of nice pots, soil amendments, fertilizer for indoor plants (who knew they like the stuff?!) and some advice on how to get my pothos to climb some indoor bricks. read more

This place is incredible!! I've wandered by a couple times after eating on Willy street, but went in for the first time and was blown away. The lady working there was really nice and helpful when we had questions, but also let us kind of roam around uninterrupted for as long as we needed to pick a few plants out. The variety here is fabulous! Airplants, cacti, snake plants, Chinese evergreens, monteseras, succulents, and more!! Also they have all the pots and gardening things you could ever need (including dirt)! Plus, they will pot whatever you purchase when you buy the plant and pot there. We loved it!! read more

I stopped in today per the recommendation of a friend to have a plant re-potted. This aloe plant belonged to my grandmother and it just was a special plant to me as a kid. Tiffany, helped me with picking out a pot size and so graciously transformed this overgrown plant into something pretty again and I even got some babies out of it!! Tiffany clearly cares for her practice, is beyond knowledgeable, and was a joy to work with. She mentioned how cool it was to play around with a family heirloom of mine... it was touching to know someone else sees why I value this plant. There is nothing more wonderful than a shop like this. The shop owner is sweet, generous and clever. Her little dog a treasure to meet and play with. I saw a rather rambunctious young lady begging her mom to wait while she picked out a few rocks for her new creation, although they were already at the counter with their purchases, and the queue had begun to form behind them. The owner said that she'd be happy to ring up only these items, and that she may take some pretty rocks from the creation station as her treat, for free. The prices are wonderfully reasonable, the atmosphere warm and kind and delightfully cluttered with all living things, suspended and displayed in every corner. This is THE BEST plant store I've been to in the Madison area. They have a great selection of plants / gardening items and customer service is OUTSTANDING. I'm very new to the gardening/houseplants scene and don't know much at all about plants but the employee working at the time, John was so kind, patient, friendly, and knowledgeable, I didn't feel like a burden even though he had just gotten a shipment in and was busy opening the store, he answered all my questions and gave me great advice. I have been in previously a few times with good experiences but I came in today concerned I needed to do something for 2 of the plants I had bought and had potted there. I was met with an incredibly condescending woman who berated me about my plants being brought out of the house due to my concerns. They must have enough business that she felt she can treat returning customers so rudely, will not return after this experience , thankfully there are other plant shops in Madison that do appreciate returning customers business. read more

I have a black thumb. Perfectly happy, thriving plants die when they enter my possession. However, I am in slight denial. I'd like to think that it's not me, but the lack of light in my apartment. When I moved into a new apartment with better light, I decided to try to keep one alive once more. So I ventured into Madison Greenhouse Store to see what I can find, and man, I wanted to buy everything up. Everything was so green and pretty in there. There is a great selection of air plants and succulents, a little terrarium making station with other bits of non-plant decorative items. Their ceramic pots were handmade and about $20. I was super tempted to purchase one because they were so pretty, but I decided that it probably made more sense to try and keep a plant alive first. The store clerk was super helpful. When I asked about a plant that would survive my black thumb and low light apartment, she pointed me to their easy care wall, but also mentioned that they had a great big Chinese evergreen that prefers low light. Oh, and regarding another reviewer's comment about being scolded for not touching plants. The store clerk was super nice and we touched nearly EVERYTHING. The only thing she asked us not to touch was this hanging plant that was losing its leaves from being overly touched. We didn't see the sign and touched it and the the store clerk said "please don't touch the plant." We felt like we were being scolded as well, but then the store clerk explained why and that no matter how she says it, it comes off as scolding. And she was really super nice. I could've easily dropped a couple hundred in that store, but I had to practice some self restraint and remind myself that I'd feel terrible if I killed all these beautiful plants. So I walked away with just a little plant for about $4. I hope it lives! read more

I wish every store was handling pandemic safety as well as the Madison Greenhouse Store is. I called earlier today to see what their Covid19 safety policies were and was told that they are making appointments for shopping. I was able to make one for a convenient time for me today. There was only one other person shopping at the same time, and I don't know how many they allow maximum. One thing that I really love and my primary purpose for visiting today is that they will drill holes in pots that you bring in. It only costs a dollar, and they don't guarantee perfect results, so be aware of that. But that said, my results have been perfect with every pot I've brought in. I really like the wide variety of seeds they carry for the garden as well, always something surprising and exciting to try growing in my community garden plot. The service is relaxed and friendly and knowledgeable. My dog is always welcome to come with me, and she is treated like a princess. I am always very happy to visit and leave with more than I came in for. read more

In addition to helping you design and build your very own greenhouse, they also have staff who are very knowledgeable about all things gardening (specifically hobby greenhouses, vertical gardens, and raised beds). Whether it's succulents, edible plants, flowers, their knowledge of all things botanical will surely answer all your questions. And if not, they will find an answer and get back to you. The store carries Purple Cow compost and potting soil and they get their seeds from Albert Lea Seedhouse. They also carry a variety of containers if you are looking to do a container garden. They also sell terrariums and air plants that they commission from Thane Wienandt. Thane also teaches classes on how to make your own terrarium (and they have another succulent class, too). Stop by this store for all your specialized gardening needs, and maybe to pick up a terrarium or two. They come in all sizes! read more

The plants here alone are 5+ stars! But, I have never had worse customer service. Admittedly, times are weird because of COVID, but this experience was just bizarre. My roommate and I went with masks hoping to support a small business and get a few plants for our house. We didn't expect to be able to go inside but there was a great selection outside. There was a sign to please make an appointment if you wanted to go in, we saw an employee and I asked if we would be able to go inside as it was still very early and there wasn't much business. We were lucky and allowed to go in. While inside, another employee angrily asked if we had an appointment, I answered "no", but before being able to say another employee had allowed us in she angrily told us "well you can't do that!" and implied for us to get out. I told her another employee had let us in and she just said okay and walked away. My roommate and I looked at each-other in shock and went to check out. The same employee that was rude before checked us out and seemed like she couldn't wait to get away from us. Ultimately amazing plant selection, some of the absolute rudest customer service I've ever had. read more

I don't write many Yelp reviews and can't remember the last time I did write one, but am writing one now to say go to the Madison Greenhouse Store and build your own terrarium!! My partner and I went and made two beautiful hanging air plant terrariums. They have affordable all inclusive packages depending on what size terrarium you want to build. We made a medium sized one for $18 and a large one for $28, which included two and three air plants respectively. They have lots of great rocks and shells and other goodies to make one that suits your fancy. So much fun. They also have stuff to make enclosed moss terrariums, which I hope to do soon. read more

What a GREAT place! I went in looking for an African Violet (oh stop laughing). I was looking at them, and the owner said something about coming in for one. I said I had. She looked at me for a minute and said, "Oh....you're serious??" We both laughed, then she helped me find a gorgeous one. We talked about how plants remind us of our grandmothers. I admittedly know nothing about plants.....aka I have a black thumb! I was looking for a "houseplant" that was easy to take care of and that I truly didn't believe I could destroy. I was recommended to try out this store by numerous friends who have found it to be an amazing, helpful and pleasant place to shop and I will say, I found all of this to be true! I entered on a Saturday and there were numerous people in the store. The woman working was nice and let me know that she was attempting to help quite a few people, so it may be a minute. I was okay with this, as it gave me a chance to look around the super cute store and come up with some ideas for my plant, as well as questions about some plants that looked new and unusual to me. In about 5 minutes she was able to join me and had the answers for me immediately. It came down to 2 choices that would work for my situation and i was able to purchase one for, what I thought, was a reasonable price for all of the information I recieved, as well as an offer to help me in the future should I run into any problems with my plant! (I'm sure I will take her up on this offer! ) I will recommend this shop to anyone who will listen. The stickers with detailed care instructions are awesome, and if you purchase both a plant and a pot, they offer to repot it for you. Walked out. I touched a plant and got scolded. The woman working there said that plants should not be touched or they will get ruined. Well I'm sorry but I thought the point of plants was to smell, touch, trim, re-pot or whatever it is you want to do with them. I was merely checking if it was healthy and looking for the covered up price. She then asked if she could help us pick out a plant that would suit our needs. I said no thanks we just want to look around to which she turned around in a huff and walked away. My husband and I without even having to look at each other, headed for the door. I love this store! I go to all the greenhouse stores in Madison, and this one by far has the most interesting and creative selection of plants / planters. Gorgeous hand-made planters by local artists for reasonable prices. The owner is very knowledgeable about the plants and their care and helpful with any questions you may have. When she found out I was a major houseplant enthusiast (bordering on maniacal), she showed me an unique plant I'd never seen - sold! Prices are comparable to other greenhouses in Madison, but plants are better cared for and you get much better customer service here. I was looking for chicks/hens plants, which they were out of, but when the stores stock was replenished the owner put them aside for me, then helped me plant them when they arrived!
