all right, I was dying to go to a pub when I was in London and stumbled upon this spot. I thought I could be a big girl and actually handle the amount size of the beer, but the beer was bigger than my head lol! The service was 10 out of 10 and the beer was 10 out of 10. I actually recommend everyone coming to this spot because they do have really good beer and really big portion sizes on the drink itself. I enjoyed myself with my co workers at this spot. The food portion as you can see were great sizes and everything came out correctly. If you are coming in a large party make sure you book a reservation because it gets crowded. They have a nice patio area unfortunately there were already two parties going on out there so we can to sit inside, but it was still nice to see. They have a nice selection of beer and wine. Our waiter was a little new so I do think that we had a little delay with the food coming out but like I stated everything came out correctly and he did a great job. Came with a group of friends sat outside, made a reservation, server was irritated with us the whole time, noone came to take our food or drinks order for close to an hour, and when we tried to order food were told the food would take 45 mins to come and that we'd need to leave by then ??!?!?!! eventually were able to order food, and then once finished rushed out the pub with a member of staff coming over to basically have a go at us for still being there. Such a weird and unpleasant experience from start to end. Very below average roast dinner as well. With so many good options - don't bother with this place. read more

A cute little pub in Notting Hill by Kensington (walkable from my hotel toward Earl's Court). Had a great Sunday afternoon roast, with veggies, potatoes, pudding, and a Guinness to boot. Topped it off with some nice sticky toffee pudding. The place was busy, but a good atmosphere. Plenty of beers on tap, as well as a full bar, and champagne by the glass. Made a reservation, when we showed up they could not find it we couldn't find any sort of hostess. After going to the garden yo try and find someone to help us, he had us follow him back up front. After going back and forth for a while after showing him the reservation and the cooking confirmation, he told us to go sit at a table in the corner.(there were quite a few open tables both in the front and garden) Sat for 15 minutes with no one approaching us, and as we were about to leave a girl came up and asked if we had a res. Very much lack of communication between staff, pub was super crowded and noisy in the front even thought tables were, as i said, open. Tasty dinner in Kensington. The neighborhood is a nice area. The place can get extremely busy on a Friday night. Most tables after 8pm were reserved. They had a pretty good selection of cask ales and the food was really tasty. I had the fish and chips. The fish was quality fish and the chips were really tasty. My sister had the sausage with mashed potatoes and gravy. It was also really good. They had us order from a server but then never checked back on us again, it was hard to get anything else. I came here a few days ago and l absolutely loved it. The place is well decorated and gives a very historic feel. Especially when entering a new room since you must duck through a tiny door. The menu has plenty of options. We with the bone marrow burger. It was delicious and my friend got the lamb. The lamb was so soft and tender full of flavor. I thought it was really cool how everything on the menu had a recommended beer to go with. I would recommend to anyone. On a separate note. Does anyone know if this place is haunted? This is the pub that you imagine finding but rarely do. Usually the best pubs in town are off the main drag, this one is too. Located in the middle of residential streets in Kensington, the Windsor Castle is immediately appealing. Inside there is a small warren of little rooms with dark wood panels and low ceilings and small doors that separate the different sections. There are separate doors on the outside to each section too. I think in the past these compartments were there to separate the riff-raff from the more genteel classes! Good selection of beers on tap and the food is great too. Pub food done well and served well. On the last visit we enjoyed some great sausage and mash and steamed pud. Bonus is quite a sizeable beer garden at the back but it's inevitably packed, especially if the weather is good as well as the pub itself since the secret place is already out but I still like to visit if I am in the area. read more

This place is the best! I only went here for a drink, so I don't know about the food at all. I only know that is supposed to be good. The ginger ale is good! The atmosphere is amazing as well! Probably we are "spoilt" but look - once you've seen the inside of a few other establishments in the area, you'll likely agree this place leaves you feeling a bit, well, scummy. It is a shame, because the folks serving the pints are really friendly, and the sort you almost want to come back for just to chat up. Then you recall the musty olfactory overload and remind yourself you might just call up the staff and offer to buy them a cheaper pint elsewhere. It's nice to have some local pubs that are just reliable and reliably good. Like the Windsor Castle, a Notting Hill institution that just delivers. I realised I hadn't been for a fair few years when I spotted a few subtle changes. At first sight everything was just like I remembered it - the walled beer garden, the wood panelled bars separated into cosy bars, the large selection of interesting beers, the bangers and mash on the menu - but the kitchen has moved to make room for a large dining area at the back of the pub, the toilets relocated to the first floor. Still, everything feels as if it's always been like this - a very gentle upgrade and obviously in keeping with the pub's listed status. The only thing that was new to me was the lack of customers. Perhaps not surprisingly on a Monday evening, but I've never seen the Windsor Castle so empty! Let's hope this was just a fluke and next time I visit it will be buzzing again. read more

I'm grateful for a pub that knows how to be a pub! On a cold last day of the year we walked in here cause of all of the great reviews on Yelp, and were pleasantly surprised! Very cozy, great service, good selection of beer, and the fish and chips......AWESOME!! Fresh flaky fish with the skin still attached, chips were fried up just right, and the tartar sauce and mushy peas were fantastic as well! Set in close proximity to Notting Hill and Kensington in the Holland Park neighborhood, The Windsor Castle Pub might very well deserve a boast as one of the top best food pubs in central London. Food wise, note their menu changes seasonally; here are some favs from Summer 2014: pork-apple bangers on caramelized onion-fig polenta, braised scallops with lardon, smoked Haddock fish pie, toffee crunch cheese cake, sticky-toffee pudding - just a few of the addictions you'll find here. Our server was outwardly friendly and helpful (even by American standards), the menu proved to be both varied and generous in proportions. The crowd is what I would deem as being posh, but not aloof nor alienating. Back garden-courtyard is quaint, intimate and fully green...overflowing with grape vines and tall Horse Chestnut trees (mind your noggin during 'conker' season). All in all, an English charm well worth placing somewhere on your list of pubs to visit. If I were local, I imagine this being my Sunday roast supper terminus. Besides, anywhere that's adjacent to a Peel Street (a la 'Emma') get tops scores from me. read more

Man, I wish we had a place like this in Texas, but it wouldn't be the same. We were in London for five days and came here every evening. The first two nights we came for drinks and had a blast. On a Saturday afternoon we had the pleasure of sitting outside. It was truly like being around your friends and having a great time. We even saw a British celebrity there with his friends and family. We came in on a Friday night, fairly early around 7pm, to enjoy a pub dinner while visiting London for the first time. We choose this place due to the proximity of our hotel, being on multiple lists for a top pub in London and overall pretty good reviews. We were quite turned off at first, but the night turned around. We walked into to the bar area and realized the restaurant is quite sectioned off without a good hostess stand. All of the tables had a "reserved at Xpm" marker on them. Most of the tables weren't even coming in till 9pm or after and when asked for a place to sit, the bartenders/servers said they had nothing available. We thought that was quite odd to hold over 50% of your tables that were empty when you could have just asked us to be off that table within 2 hours. We decided to head to the back open beer garden area to see about food and drinks there. We secured a table, but we realized there isn't a service out there. You have to walk in to the bar to order drinks or food so it would be quite annoying/tedious fighting your way through a crowd just to order a drink. Additionally, we wanted food and so many people were smoking outside we almost just gave up and left. After being quite discouraged, we decided to try and just sit at one of the tables who weren't coming in until 9pm anyways. It was a success! We ordered food and drinks at the bar and sat the rest of the night at the 'reserved' table without any issues. The food was surprisingly yummy and we let satisfied. We ordered the scotch eggs to start, and they were probably some of the best ones we had during our trip to London. Crispy and hot on the outside, but moist and slightly runny egg on the inside. Next we got the bangers and mash and steak sandwich. The bangers were really good. Salt was right, sausage was juicy but crisp and the sauce was quite delicious. The steak sandwich was 'just alright'. Tip: Get reservations or sit at a table marked 'reserved' where you have time to get in/out before the party arrives. read more

I ordered the Fish & Chips with a pint of Timothy Taylor's. The degree of freshness was obvious. The fish had all of the components of a cooked fish and was not some manufactured piece of processed materials. Fresh cut fries with the potato skins still on. And the mashed peas still consisted of whole piece indicating that they were mashed at the venue. When the dish was brought out to me it was so hot that it required tartar sauce to avoid burning myself; waiting was not a rational option. Timothy Taylor's complement the dish well. In terms of atmosphere, this place is the epitome of cozy. Small and dimly lit with low arching overhangs forcing you to duck down. Also, the Windsor Castles fills up pretty quickly; I saw quite a few people making rounds looking for a table. read more

Dear Fellow Foreigners Disclaimer: This visit was on our first night in London, with the stereotypically absent understanding of British pub culture. The vibe here was unreal. People were laughing, cheering, and clearly having a good time. When I asked the bartender if we just seat ourselves, she just said, "Good luck." She was right. There is a great beer garden in the back, and ample seating up front. It is just a very popular place, and there were a few meet-ups going on. It was about 30 minutes before a table opened up, but we were able to order drinks and roam freely with them until a table opened up. By the time a table opened up in the bar area, we clumsily heel-toed our way towards it. It took another 20 minutes before I realized I had to go to the bar to order the food (read disclaimer above). The short of it is that the beers and the bartenders were great. I did not recognize one beer on their menu, which allowed me to explore a bunch of different varieties. I told them the qualities I look for in a beer, and they matched it up perfectly. They really do know their ales. The food...well, I don't know if pubs are one of those places you shouldn't typically order food at, but we did. I got a beef sandwich with fries and my wife got a burger. The sandwich wasn't bad, but the burger was dry, dry, dry. "Well done" was an understatement. However, color me charmed! We quickly got on with drinking the night away. Overall, this is a visit I will make again. It was hugely responsible for helping us understand and appreciate pub culture. I would recommend it as a first stop for anyone staying in the Kensington area (or thereabouts) if you want a crash course in pub culture. You won't feel alienated, but you also won't feel immersed in a pool of fellow travelers dampening the authenticity of this place. Plus, the drinks are great and the bartenders know their stuff. How many nights after work did I either sip a conversational adult bevie with friends and co-workers or get completely wankered at the Windsor Castle I cannot remember. I can tell you that inside is a tight, warm, cozy little pub that serves a great pint. I can still remember standing on Kensington Church Street at the entrance to Campden Hill Road, listening for the din of the patrons spilling out into the street and yammering away in drunken and not-so-drunken revery. We went to the back of the pub where it was less crowded so that we could hear each other in conversation. Service was fast and efficient to crank out pint after pint for thirsty customers. I love English pub culture and this place certainly instills all those cultural qualities. A banging Sunday roast with ALL the trimmings, an excellent real ale line up (and beer in general really), a great boozer garden, wooden quirky interior that hasn't been meddled with too much over the past 100 (+??) years and some great gins. If you committed to trying all of the beers that they have on tap you would need to be carried out of the place. On top of the real ales they have a broad selection of English craft beers, big name brands and international crafties. The wine list could do with a bit of work. There is lots and lots of tables in the booze garden but as soon as the sun is out it does fill up pretty quickly after work and on Sundays. To be expected! Inside there are these small hobbit like doors that you have to duck through and lots of pokey corners to nestle into and enjoy your beer/roast/gin. As I said, it just feels really English. All the food is great but if you're there on a Sunday I would highly recommend the roast. A good place for sharing other menu items too and good gourmet snacks rotate through the menu such as terrine and mussels. read more

We arrived at 12:30 on Friday and the timing was perfect. Not too busy and pleasantly quiet. The series of indoor rooms were all charming and very much the warm pub feel we enjoy. The Garden is large and well planned and though the dqy was beautiful, we chose to be inside. We were greeted by Fihat with a welcoming smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. We were seated beforeour two Guiness had settled down allowing the full pint to be pulled, so Fihat topped the glasses and brought them to us. We had the soft shell crab, long stemmed broccoli and fish and chips . Each dish was absolutely delightful and beautiful to behold. The sourdough bread we ordered was a small loaf ,warm and nicely sliced , that came with butter as well as an olive oil - vinegar dipping bowl. This gastropub has a secret garden in the back that traps the sun, making it the perfect post-Holland park hideaway. We both ordered the fish and chips, which I seriously think is the best I've had in London. Everything was fresh and well presented. So this place is away from all the hustle & bustle & tourists in central London. It took us sometimes to find it actually & we got there 3 ish on a Sunday. The first impression when we walked in was not the best, it was like we are invisible, so many staff walked pass by us without acknowledging or even looking at us. It felt like we are invisible :) In the end I decided to go inside to approach ( basically block their way from running) one of the waiters & ask if they got any table available & my husband waited at the bar behind 4,5 others to be served. So when I finally could get attention of one of the waiters( and I can tell you it wasn't easy) he said that the food has to be ordered at the bar) so I went running back to the bar & it was finally our turn but then he said that they are pretty much out of everything specially Sunday's roast ( which was the reason we went there) & the waiting time is up to one hour so we just left & didnt even finish our drink which we sort of were too rushed to order & the really unpleasant unfriendly guy at the bar just wanted to keep the flow moving, I mean he didn't even give us a menu & he wanted us to order something else instead!! read more

I'm currently writing this review from the US embassy where my family and I are replacing the passports we had stolen along with my purse, wallet, credit cards, cell phone and charmingly.... both my coat and my son's coat on a 40 degree day! This "lovely" pub in Kensington is clearly in on a theft ring in the area for the following reasons: First- we had a reservation and as we walked in the bartender and waitress looked at each other and "decided" to move us from our reserved table to a table in a side room..... Shockingly this room has NO CCTV access! Second our teenage children watched a couple move from table to table in this pub, highly suspiciously, from the front of the pub to our room, never ordering food or drink.... then this couple took up the table directly behind us. My son actually mentioned that the strange man motioned to the waitress right before he got up to leave but never ordered anything.... And guess what? Within 5 minutes we realized my purse with everything we needed for our trip was gone! And alas....you'd think our waitress would be distressed, falling all over to help us correct??? Nope, we found her drinking beer at the bar! The "managers" let us into their office to spend an hour: calling the USELESS local police (they won't come to do anything btw), canceling our credit cards etc. Then, the Pub "generously" called us a free Uber (please read with sarcasm). Last but not least in line this morning at the embassy we met a lovely American girl who had the exact same thing happen on the same day down the street at Churchill Arms in Kensington- so a huge shout out to our fabulous British hosts for being either crooks or f*cking oblivious to a crime ring running in their locals. And lest you think we are "stupid Americans" this is our third trip to London (and our last!) we have traveled all over Europe, Asia, North America, Central America and Caribbean and this has been by far our worst experience traveling. read more

Before I begin, I must admit that I am cheerfully awarding a fifth star for the fact that this pub doesn't have a television and they resolutely refuse to acknowledge the existence of any sport. THANK YOU WINDSOR CASTLE. If I wanted to watch the football, I'd go to one of those hideous bars with flatscreens and sticky tables and WKD. But I don't. I hate sport. Why does everyone assume that the lives of all 70 million Brits are directly affected by a bit of pigskin being kicked around a field? NAFF OFF EURO 2012. I just want to sit and chat with my friends - you know, like we used to do in the olden days before Twitter stopped us being able to communicate in sentences longer than 160 characters. There are no machines to play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire here . . . no loyalty cards or DJs or karaoke nights or surround sound . . . It's just an old-fashioned pub with mullioned windows and climbing roses that somehow manages to escape both the nearby tourist trade and the "old man" label and remain a warm, atmospheric, characterful gem. Nicely weathered, with low ceilings, mismatched heavy wooden chairs, benches inscribed with Latin phrases (possibly not authentic), separate bars (originally for segregation between the sexes and classes; now just a leftover quirk) and those wonderful teeny tiny doors through which to clamber en route to the loos. In a disgustingly uncharacteristic twist of fate, I was off the booze the day that we were there, and so I can't comment on the alcoholic drinks available. (I can say that their diet coke was appropriately fizzy and came with ice and slice. It was an excellent vintage). However, my friends seemed very happy with a range of beers, both bottled and on tap; I caught the whiff of a particularly delicious bitter; and there was even the odd wine glass scattered throughout, with no complaints to be heard. The food was very good - perhaps not the best pub lunch ever, but really very good - and above everything else, the staff were absolutely lovely. In fact as our party grew throughout the course of the afternoon, we moved locations three times without a single complaint, despite the complication of shifting our tab as we went. Such is the charm of this place; you only mean to spend a couple of hours and then the whole day has gone and you don't even realise. I'm told that there's a delightful beer garden (somebody mentioned tortoises; is this true?!) but the weather was royally crap so we never had the chance to check it out. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go back again. Sometimes life is just too tough for words. read more

Let me set the scene: It was another cold day in London, I'd spent an hour in Westfield looking at stuff I didn't want to buy and was walking to a Japanese Garden that I'd heard about in Holland Park. I found the Japanese Garden which was Japanese in the sense there was a small pond and I spotted one koi in there, but afterwards while lost and trying to find the station (damn you Googlemaps), I had a hankering for a quiet pint in a quaint pub and walked in. There was a good selections of beers, and I was able to try some out before deciding on one (I love it when pubs let you do that). Being that it was Good Friday I had seen a load of signs advertising fish'n'chips so *obviously* at the first rumble (read: full blown tremor), I ordered a plate. I actually thought the food was pretty good so quite happily spent a couple of hours here chillin' in the warmth. OK, I think I am officially old. :) read more

Their website says that in the late 1830s, the classes and sexes were segregated at this pub. Today, they bill themselves as "Kensington's friendliest pub" offering a "welcoming and relaxed atmosphere." Ironically, this is where we experienced the least friendly service during our stay in London. We came on a Sunday, but opted not to have their lavish Sunday roast. While perusing our menus, the server came by and told us we had to PAY IN ADVANCE. That was a first and only on our trip. Maybe it's a pub thing. He took our drink orders and when we said we would be having dinner, he said we could pay after we got our beers, but before the food came out. He got impatient with us as we attempted to count our coins in the dark, finally reaching over and counting it out for me. Anyhow, we both had the LANDMARK. An excellent beer by the way. Highly recommend. We both also wanted the fish and chips, but they were out by the time we came by for an early dinner, so we ordered the BURGER, a thick, juicy West Country beef patty with cheddar and smoked bacon and served with fries. It was fantastic that day! Right up there with the best burgers I've ever had. So we definitely enjoyed our beer and food. But we saw and experienced none of the friendliness. In fact, while we were waiting for our food, the same server argued with the customers at the next table and after another server brought out the wrong dishes to us (and we mistakenly accepted them), she gave us a nasty look when we flagged her down to come back for the dishes.
