The Marquis Cornwallis looks like a popular neighborhood pub. My husband and I showed up on a Sunday night and the main floor was packed. We were able to book a table about 6 hours prior and showed up to find our reserved table upstairs. The upstairs section can even be reserved for a private party. I don't know if the situation is the same on the main floor, but the bartender came to our table to get our orders; we didn't have to go to the bar to order food, drinks, and pay. This was my husband's first visit to England and he wanted to make sure we didn't leave without having a proper roast. We ordered the arancini to start and the rump of beef for dinner. The arancini were soft, artichokey, creamy cheesy, and was accompanied by some herb mayo. They were good, but I still rather to have my arancini with a side of marinara. The rump of beef was good and very comforting. It came with roasted potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and Yorkshire pudding. I liked the wine sauce, but I definitely should have asked for more. I felt the dish overall, was a little on the drier side. I barely had any gravy for the vegetables or pudding. We came here because it was so close to our hotel and we were looking for a good place to have lunch. It was right after Christmas so it wasn't too busy. We sat and waited a while for our order to be taken. I'm not sure whether it's just London and things are slower there but service everywhere seems a little slower than the states. That being said, the food was so good! I enjoyed everything I had. We ordered several small plates and each item was delicious. I especially loved the cauliflower bites. This appears to be a local spot by the crowd in here upon arrival. We made a reservation before coming to secure a table. No server ever approached us. So, we opted to order through their online option. Assuming you can place food orders at the bar as well. Our drinks took about 10 minutes to arrive and the food nearly 45 minutes. Restaurants can have a bad night, and people are generally forgiving by nature. If your kitchen is short-staffed on a Monday night it's ok. Why you would then accept a reservation made at 6:00pm for 7:30? Our table wasn't ready and the place was packed. We were finally sat, and appetizer, meals and drinks were ordered at 7:45. Drinks came shortly thereafter. From 8:00 to 8:55 we saw nothing. Nobody checking on us, explaining the delay, asking if we wanted another round of drinks or a water refill. Literally an hour went by like we weren't even there with no food and 4 empty glasses. Food came out after 9:00, appetizers forgotten, barely any recognition that something was amiss. Did not one person working there notice? Did not one person care enough to apologize? Did not one person at least try to sell us something like another pint while we sat there like idiots? The bartenders and staff were very pleasant and were able to recommend foods for our group that all enjoyed. My girlfriend and I popped in here late on a Friday night after coming into London for a long layover. I knew we had to try something authentic while in town and this place had tons of reviews and many of them were great. It was about a 9 minute walk from our hotel and we were fortunate to get seated right away because this place was packed. The service was a tad bit slow, but for how busy it was we had no complaints. I went with an authentic dish featuring potatoes and some type of pot pie (STEAK, SHIN & PALE ALE PIE) and the vegetables weren't great, but the rest of the meal was super good. We were stupid Americans in London! You go up to the bar AND pay in advance when you want to order. We waited at our seat for more minutes than I want to admit until we figured it out. I went back and forth between a three and a four with my rating. The service was sloooooowwww, but my husband mentioned that maybe that was the London way, to slow down and enjoy the experience, so I went with a four. As I already shared, we didn't know the ordering process. Once we figured it out, we went up to the bar and ordered. I got fish and chips and the hubby got bangers and mash. The food took a long time to come out. We needed ketchup and other items when our food arrived and that took equally long to get. However, I don't think service is the star in London, I general. The bangers and mash was delicious! PERFECTLY seasoned. The sausage had a nice bite when you bit through the casing and the contrast with the soft mashed potatoes was an explosion in your mouth. Dip it in gravy and oh man, it was great! The fish and chips was also quite good, with a huge piece of fish. I did not like the peas that came with it, they had an acidity that my palette wanted to fight. All in all, the food was great, the service wasn't, but I would come back. I'm not one to judge places quickly by their bad days, but pettiness gets on my nerves. All in all the food is good and well prepared, and the place was clean. However, when me and my friends had come in an ordered food and drinks one night apparently we caused the staff an inconvenience by doing so. We had received our food and all was good but we reminded them about our drinks after they asked if we needed anything else. They seemed a bit put off but I thought nothing of it untill we received our drinks and theu were completely watered down. I mean literal tap water. I had ordered an aperol spritz (fairly common and simple drink, nothing crazy) and received a slightly orange colored glass of icewater with a garnish. There wasn't even any carbonation We gave them no reason to be petty and were extremely polite and understanding about our drinks being forgotten so it was strange to get an attitude and a watery drinks in return. Anyways everyone has bad days but intentionally altering drinks is a bit much especially when they had absolutely no reason to be upset. Not coming here again. read more

Cold, gloomy December night in London, looking for a cozy place to grab a beverage and bar food. Found the perfect place in The Marquis Cornwallis. We walked 25 minutes (from Covent Garden) to get to the place and it was worth every chilly step. As soon as we walked in, one of the friendly servers helped us get seated, and set the tone for a nice relaxing time. One of my party tried their Guinness -- her first real pour ever, and she instantly said "this is now my favorite beer!." The small plates were delicious, and the service was terrific and friendly. The barman was exceptional, took great care of us, and made us feel like his most important customer -- he made the evening for us. Thanks MC for making that experience possible. A bit loud on Saturday which is to be expected and music could be a little lower, but service was outstanding, numerous beers to choose from on tap, excellent location, and possibly some of the best fish and chips in London. Everyone who ordered something other than that seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their meals and it is not allowed and obnoxious local pub but rather an established restaurant where several families were enjoying their meals. Nice outdoor seating with heaters above and residential neighborhood which means no outside drinking after nine pm which made it even more enjoyable and desirable as a dining establishment. read more

Great pub experience! The decor in this place is well thought out, very laid back locals vibe and the menu is traditional English with some unexpected items. My husband and I found this on Yelp looking for something to eat for an early dinner. When we turned on to the street I knew exactly where it was because of all the locals outside. I loved my goat cheese and beet tart. It was oozy and the flavors worked wonderfully together. In addition to our entrees we ordered the chips. GET THEM! These were the best chips we had on our London trip. They were cut to exact same (large) size, super crispy and well seasoned. The Marquis of Cornwallis is a pub on Marchmont Street. It is quite large, set across two floors. Both floors are open plan. The ground floor is larger and smartly decorated. The upper room is smaller and looks more like a traditional pub. Both floors have a bar which is fully stocked with a good selection of beers. The crowd is mixed in terms of ages with many students as well as tourists and local workers. The staff are efficient and pleasant enough. Though it is quite fun and lively at night I prefer it as a place for daytime drinking. It is also alongside the Brunswick centre and so ideal for a drink before a cinema or after shopping. read more

This place is easily 4 stars on a normal night, but on this occasion everything worked against it's favour and only 3 was possible. I'll explain. The Place is split over 2 floors. At 7pm, downstairs was bustling with life. Plenty of patrons there for after work drinks. Luckily we had a reservation for the dining floor upstairs which had a much more ambient setting with lower noise levels. The way it works here is no table service. You need to order drinks and food at the bar and it will be brought to your table, or in the case of drinks, be collected at the bar. It's like Wetherspoons, but whilst Wetherspoons are a tightly run ship, Marquis here began it's descent. We ordered drinks and the card reader was having an off night because it was declined from some machines, then the backup seemed to lose wireless connectivity, making what should take 1 minute, take about 3-4. To save time, we opened a tab and was told drinks would be brought to us. 15 minutes later no drinks. I had to go back to the bar and request them again. Next I went up to order food. Suddenly a memo appeared at that exact moment from the dumb waiter. No more burgers for the night. No explanation why. Just no. So went back to table, got everyone's revised orders and went to order. 30 mins or so later we were eating. Phew. The food itself was very very good. The southern fried chicken is standout. Buttermilk fried, tasty delicious. I could have had it to myself. The pork belly was exceptionally good too. Tender, moist. Everything was great down to the sticky toffee pudding..mmm. Which made the disparity with the service that little bit more annoying. There was one barmaid serving the whole first floor. That's both drinks and food and billing. Way too much for one person and it showed. I can't really attribute blame to them, particularly as they appeared to be doing their best and was super apologetic. Table service, even just one extra staff member would really help in the food area. Now I had no problem with having to go up to the bar. But if that process isn't working, table service is the best alternative until it's fixed. In all honesty, I want to give this place a 4 and without all the troubles it easily is. It's a nice place to impress in a relaxed environment with top notch food. It's just that 4 stars says "there's really not much to improve" and that is far from the case on the service side. read more

It was raining hard and I needed cover. The Marquis of Cornwallis welcomed me in. The bar is spacious with tables and chairs dotted around the floor in a non-linear fashion, with the odd couch and booth style seat against he walls. There is an upstairs area that is also spacious and has a living room vibe that is soothing. The bar itself has a great selection of draught and for its location it isn't expensive. The food menu although I didn't try it had an above average contemporary pub selection. Marquis would not be a destination pub for me. It looks good, has decent menu's and had a very impressive crowd for 4:30 in the afternoon, but paid for wifi is a big turn off. read more
