My son: "I like it there because it's fun and I can get to earn a bunch of cool belts and I learn new things and it makes me strong!" My son started training here Spring of 2021 and loves coming to class twice a week. I do too to be honest. Grandmaster Lee, Master Lee, Ms. Lee and Mr. Lee are passionate about this art form whilst being incredibly nice, approachable and patient. I really don't know how they don't lose their s--- cause sometimes, as we all know, younger kids are nuts and all over the place. The instructors, week after week, manage to contain the madness, make it fun and instill confidence, strength and executive function. Another thing I also like about this studio is that they really test the students before promoting them to the next level. It's not just based on age or how many months you've trained. It's based on whether the student has trained hard, is focused and ready to level up and progress. TMW has evening adult classes, Saturday morning stretches and Master Lee teaches a self defense program periodically too. Throughout the year, they have their demo team perform for the public and students can go watch their instructors do some cool tricks like break bricks and backflips to get inspired. My son joined TMW last November and he loves going to his classes. It is a family run academy and each member of their family is very passionate about and dedicated to Taekwondo. Although the classes are in relatively big groups (white belt) but they pay attention to every student and give them one on one instruction so they master their moves. My family had been going to The Martial Way years ago when I was a kid. The studio always had a strong family feel and fun environment. Master Lee was always so funny and great with kids. Master Jodi Lee was very kind and engaging with her students. Fast forward 15 years when my son turned 4, I knew where I was going to take him for his first Taekwondo class. Sure enough, the masters were just as great as I remembered. They really engaged with him (and all students) to improve his technique. They really challenge the kids to do their best. I attended The Martial Way from 1997-2009, and received my first Dan (first degree black belt) in Hap Ki Do & second Dan in Tae Kwon Do. Both are Kukiwan certified. This studio played a large part in my formative years, and I made lifelong fraternal bonds with peers that I'm still in contact with today. Grand Master Jung Yul Lee & his wife Master Jodi Lee along with their kids (the Jae's) are a nurturing community that helped cement discipline & healthy habits that I still carry with me. Without them and the Martial Way community, I wouldn't have gotten into UC Berkeley and i wouldn't be where/who I am today. This studio is more than just an after school program; it's a center of excellence, virtue and good moral values led by trustworthy people who have nothing but you and your children's best interests in mind. They care for EACH student and help with their physical and maturity developments. During the quarantine period, they have made it possible to train via Zoom to keep the training consistent. They are all incredible--supportive, engaging, and able to effectively connect with students both in person and online. My son has been training here for almost 5 months. He's 6 and loves going to class and showing others the moves he is learning. He has really developed much better coordination and control of his body. I'm personally impressed by all of the instructors who somehow manage to make the class fun while keeping all the kids engaged and in their lines. There are usually 4 instructor on the floor for each class marking the ratio of student to teacher 3:1 or even 2:1. This incredible personal attention far exceeded my expectations for the class. We found this studio because of homeschooling connections for my son (they are an approved vendor with our charter) but then we got my daughter to sign on too. Master Harrison-Lee is such a remarkable and just super cool person and teacher, and she used to be a school teacher as well, and I love how the studio emphasizes character. Grandmaster Lee has a great sense of humor and is very kind and humble despite his intimidating pedigree in Taekwondo. The look on the kids' faces the first day I observed classes at Martial Way was what really struck me. They just had such obvious joy and pride in what they were doing. I so appreciate the way the instructors speak to and treat the kids - with so much kindness and respect, but without coddling. The kids rise to the standard that's expected of them, and you can tell they love being challenged to learn and to keep trying. Coming off of months stuck at home, the opportunity to be with other kids, learn a new skill, get physical exercise, and be encouraged by an adult (other than me!) to keep trying and persevering has been a breath of fresh air for my daughter, and has brought me so much joy to see. We love LOVE this place! There are many forms of martial arts but we settled on taekwondo mainly because of the sincerely caring owners. My 2 daughters and I have been training here for 6+ yrs. The Martial Way has been in business for over 15 years. It is a family-owned and operated studio, run by a husband and wife team (Jung and Jodi-Harrison Lee), both of whom are black belts (he's a grand master, she's a 4th degree). Their two older kids (a teen and a tween) are both black belts too. Their youngest, a 6-7 year old is getting in on the family training too. I love the GREAT kid energy here. Lots of kids train here, at all belt levels. Grand Master Lee leads the classes and he is often assisted by 1 or 2 black belts (a teen and/or an adult). While he is age-appropriately strict and demanding, the kids still have fun! Teens and adults train here in the evenings. The training that my girls are getting here has definitely boosted their self-confidence. Adults have classes mostly in the evening but there is also a morning class 3x a week. I go mostly to the morning class. Sometimes i go to the evening classes when I've been overeating (!) or need to fine-tune techniques in preparation for my next belt test. The parent community here is terrific too, very supportive, not at all cut-throat and competitive against fellow students. Don't get me wrong! No wimps here! These kids, teens, and adults compete in taekwondo tournaments and cheer each other on. The camaraderie is a fantastic feeling.....among the parents AND the kids. And I like the philosophy of The Martial Way. Their martial arts training is more than just the physical moves and techniques. Attention is paid to attitude, self-discipline, developing focus and behavior skills on and off the mat. In order to promote to the next belt level, kids have to write a short essay on an assigned character-building word (from 2 sentences for the wee ones to full-blown 1-pagers for the older kids). Words like honesty, confidence, community, friendship, perseverance, courtesy, etc. I think their monthly fee is very reasonable and their classes are a full hour long (not 45-minutes). Reduced rates can be had if you sign up for several months at a time, and/or if another family member signs up. Classes are mostly 2x a week and start whenever you want and continues for as long as you want. Free uniform. If you're shopping for a martial arts studio, compare not only the fee and length of classes but the atmosphere, the community, the energy that the students and families bring to it. read more
