This review is long overdue! We love Tanto! My kids started BJJ here and have been training for…read moreover a year now (since Tanto opened at its former location). Professor Alfred and Coach Sasha are amazing. They truly care about their students. Alfred explains things thoroughly and will work through any technique you have questions on. My daughter is transitioning to the adult class and she loves it as much as she loves the kids class. Great location , there are free parking lots in the area, close to restaurants and coffee shops. The facility is very clean and well maintained. They offer a free trial class and will loan you a gi if they have your size. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. We've met amazing people/friends here - Alfred, Sasha, the students and parents - everyone is like a family. It feels like home away from home. I'd recommend this place to anyone. Come join the family!

We were both surprised. I've never been able to escape his literal grip on my wrists and now I do so easily. Alfred and Sasha are great instructors--very clear, approachable, and observant. It felt like a private class even with other students around. I will definitely be back and I'm coming back with my sister and friends!

We mainly wanted him to build confidence, learn some self-defense, and have something that would help with his focus discipline and coordination. We've definitely seen a difference. When he started, he didn't really know how to tumble or do things like cartwheels, and now he's doing all of that along with learning actual mounts and pins. The coaches do a really good job keeping the kids engaged and focused, which I know is not easy with a group of 4, 5, and 6 year olds. They make it fun but still teach them a lot. There's a mix of ages and sizes in the class, but everyone is really mindful of the smaller kids and what each child can handle. The coaches, kids, and parents have all been super friendly and welcoming. It's been really nice watching William become more confident and comfortable over the last six months. We've had a great experience with KD MMA Montrose and definitely recommend it!

My son really developed a strong foundation in the fundamentals. We also loved the facilities. They're clean, modern, and a huge step above the typical strip mall-style gyms you often find around LA. What initially drew us in was the care and attention that both professors give to each of the classes. I have long been curious about jiujitsu but it was also very intimidating. What finally motivated me to begin was the women's self defense classes on Sundays. It is open to all women regardless of previous experience (or in my case no experience) and Professor Amanda does a great job of making the classes fun, informative and challenging. The other women in the class are equally wonderful and inviting! The kids classes are also incredibly well structured and engaging. The instruction and care that goes into each class is evident by how much the kids enjoy participating and also how much of the new instructions they retain. We're so grateful for the amazing community that Amanda and Gabe have created!

I am a credentialed teacher and hold a doctorate in education. I have been going to this studio…read morefor several years. I started back in 1997 when I witnessed my students who had been attending improve in their academics and classroom participation. Their self-esteem shot through the roof. I worked all the way through to my second degree black belt over the years, taking time off to have a daughter and work on my doctorate. What I observed over the years, and as my own daughter has taken several classes and is moving up the ranks, is a dojo with discipline, ethics, and heart. I have personally observed Master Armen Heroian working with children at many different levels and ages. He has had tremendous success with children with special needs, including with children I have personally referred. I have also witnessed Master Armen living the tenets of the dojo: effort, etiquette, sincerity, character, and self-control. He has done so with his own children, and treats my own daughter like family. He has extremely high expectations, yet meets everyone where they are. He gives each individual exactly what they need to grow. Sometimes, as we all know, some people do not like to be pushed to seek out their limits. That is an unfortunate mistake on their part. Sometimes, as parents, we coddle, our children need to know they can stand alone...to find success. We stunt their growth when we interrupt the process. Whether they learn it through the dojo, through taking tremendously rigorous courses in college while supporting a family, or whatever life has to throw at them, they need to know that they may be pushed to their limits, BUT THEY WILL NOT BREAK. That is the GIFT I have been given by Master Armen, and the gift that he gives to my daughter and my current and former students. The testing IS rigorous for black belt. As it SHOULD be. (The teens working toward their first degree black belts, by and large did tremendously well, and did us proud. Though, one or two of those especially coddled ones pouted a bit.). The test includes several hours of basics, and other exercises of endurance. There is sparring as well with equally ranked black belts. There are times, just as in running a marathon (which I have also done), when you want to give up. The higher ranking black belts work to cheer us on. Push us. At one point I needed to stop, because I had maxed out. I was told to sit out for a little bit. I had given it my all, and we all knew it. I was not chastised or ridiculed for it. When I was ready, I went back to it. Halfway through the test, we went to the beach, and got to do our combinations in the waves, which was so welcome considering the sweat we all built up. We did our forms and several other feats that created a team amongst those of us testing. We also did other fun and silly creative things. I even walked a lower ranking male student as he crawled in front of me using his belt. The whole time both of us had huge smiles on our faces. We played leap frog in the sand. And played with the sea weed. The whole time, my daughter walked along with us and observed us and cheered us on. Nearly 11 hours later, I was victorious. We ALL were. Thank you Master Armen and everyone else who has had such a tremendous impact on my life.

I paid close attention to the instruction, technique, discipline, and how the children responded to the masters. At some studios, I was surprised to see very young children wearing black belts that didn't seem earned. My 6-year-old son has been attending ETC for nearly a year, and the difference is evident. Master Paul and Master Jue are deeply committed to teaching proper technique, discipline, and character. They hold students to high standards while still encouraging them, and it shows in the way the children carry themselves. I believe in gentle parenting, but I also believe children need structure and accountability. ETC reinforces those values. My son has great respect for Master Paul, and we've seen significant improvement in his behavior both in and out of class. If you're looking for a Taekwondo studio that focuses on real skill development, discipline, and building respectful young leaders, I highly recommend ETC.
