We were planning a wedding from out of town and only had a few weekends where we'd be around West Chester to taste cake. Once we knew what kind of cake we wanted I just sent in a picture to Grace and they delivered! Hire these culinary geniuses! Planning a wedding - particularly during a global pandemic is not for the faint of heart. One of the best moves we made when we got to sorting ours was going with Master's Baker. We hired the best in the biz (seriously the BEST) and because we did? There was very little to worry about. These folks are organized, meticulous, and so obviously experienced. Sometimes we'd be like ... let's do this! And they'd be like, I like that but here are some things to think about based on what I've seen. (SO HELPFUL!) By far the best flavors and cake texture of all the places we tried - we went with Mabel for some tiers and carrot cake for others, and a cinnamon sugar cream cheese filling that was amazing! I actually found this on Yelp as I needed a 60th birthday cake for my boyfriend's parents. Yes, both parents were turning 60 within 8 days of each other and threw a surprise birthday party at our house. What a success, including the cake! When I called inquiring about their pricing and cakes, they were very helpful and friendly. I stopped in and dropped off the invitation asking them to replicate as best they could knowing it was for a man and a woman. Terrible communication skills! Long story but I will try to summarize. After speaking with our consultant for over 20 minutes and EMPHASIZING on the colors of the wedding (dusty blue & blush) and CAKE color that we wanted which was like a powder blue color In which we showed her a PICTURE of where it is CLEARLY BLUE, she proceeds to show us color swatches and I see a pretty blue that is close to the cake I want and so I proceed to go with that one but she must have misunderstood and went for the one close to it and chose Dusty Sage even though the word SAGE never came out of my mouth NOT ONCE in speaking to her and going through all the details. I signed the contract after having just skimmed through it, did not notice the color she had on there but I felt pretty good after the conversation we had and I trusted everything was fine. WRONG! Two weeks prior to the wedding, I call the bakery to change the color of the cake to WHITE instead. I was not feeling so sure on the powder blue cake with all the different blues I was already going to have in the wedding so I felt safer keeping it white. My consultant was not in so I went ahead and just told the girl I spoke to on the phone to make a note of the change in color. I was on the phone with her for about 7 minutes. She even had me on hold to ask her supervisor what the new price was going to be since I did not want to go with any color anymore. The price was revised and the cake was now $15 less. So I made a full payment and thought we were all good. Wedding day comes and as I'm getting ready, my sisters run to me to tell me the cake is GREEN!! I panic and have to see for myself. It is GREEN and so is all the matching cupcakes and macarons. Not only did I not get a pretty powder blue cake, but I also did not receive it in WHITE as I had changed it to. I got a GREEN cake instead!!!! My sister goes on to call the bakery and I think managed to speak with the owner. He says that I had agreed to that Dusty Sage color and that was it. YES.. I own up to signing the contract not noticing it said Dusty Sage but I WILL NOT TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY because clearly the consultant did NOT LISTEN to a word I said and the girl I spoke to on the phone to change the color of the cake to white DID NOT COMMUNICATE that to anyone!! I spoke to the consultant a few days later and she goes on to somewhat apologize but also to remind me that I signed off on a Dusty Sage cake and that there's nothing she can do but have the GM call me. GM calls me next day (really nice lady) and listens to my concerns and sincerely apologizes for the mix up and my experience and proceeds to refund me $75 for screwing up the color of the cake and all the matching dessert. So... this GREEN cake RUINED my DECOR, RUINED my PHOTOS, RUINED my MOOD on my wedding day and RUINED the MEMORIES but I was refunded $75 out of over $700 I spent and I'm supposed to be ok with that I guess and expected to be content. Just be very careful so you don't end up like me!! And ask to see a photo of the cake the day prior to the wedding!! They listened to exactly our ideas and sat with us to design the cake. They made ideas into reality and exceeded our expectations. Delicious and creative! WE LOVED THE CAKE AND CUPCAKES! Ordered the cake as a unique idea for an employee birthday celebration. We planned a party for a Department of maintenance workers, groundskeepers and custodians. We wanted the cake design to be a surprise and told the planner about the office environment, the total budget and how many employees we were trying to feed (~50). So, we totally went in blind and let the experts take over from there. On the day of the scheduled pick-up, the cake and cupcakes were ready on time. The bakery helped package the cake and load it in the car. The cake design captured our Department perfectly and was the centerpiece of the celebration. The Master's Baker went above and beyond our expectations. We ordered the vanilla sour cream pound cake and we couldn't have been happier! We used Master's Baker for our wedding cake as part of our venue. At the end of the day, the staff members are nice, and the cake tasted great. But, there were some issues. For one, I don't know if there is miscommunication within the staff, but we got different information from different people but it eventually got sorted at the end. Secondly, yes our cake tasted great, but as a wedding cake, it should also look nice! I attached the 3 photos our photographer took of the cake, which shows giant cracks (who, by the way, wasn't trying to capture the flaws, just trying to capture the cake). UPDATE: The reply from bakery is quite interesting. A few points... 1. I asked for regular sprinkles and I was told they would NOT work if I wanted design elements added to the sides. 2. I specifically asked Jessica if the ombré would cost more. She went and checked with someone and came back to tell me NO-it would not be an additional charge. I was shocked, quite frankly. As you can see from the bakers response, I was in fact charged $17.50 per ombré. See added photo where you will clearly see there is not a clean delineation of pink from one layer to the next. It all looks like the same pink! 3. Since I was in your establishment for quite some time, I am surprised I did not see the sign you reference regarding unsatisfied customers. I am very detail oriented and even noticed the chandeliers in your other rooms. I also noticed that you "sell" busted up cake in bags that are leftover from the cakes people pay for...interesting! 4. The photos I provided did not look anything like the lonely fish that ended up in my cake. In addition, why would you use blue color icing for the word blue and white icing for the word pink?! Very rushed and sloppy writing on the cake. 5. I have since spoken to several people about my experience at your bakery. All of them had average to not so good experiences and were also blown away by your high prices for the lack of quality they received. They also told me that you charge for the wooden round piece you put the cake on... AND you don't tell people that if they return it, you will be credited for it!!! This is straight up sneaky and dishonest. Several people shared this with me! I was a first time customer about 2 weeks ago. I was pleased with the staff member that took my order. She took notes and did a small rendering. My cake was a gender reveal cake for our baby, due in August. I have been a designer for over 23 years, working with licensors like Disney, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, Warner Bros and many more. I was very specific with the details I wanted on my cake. It was a 10" round cake. I requested the signature vanilla cake flavor with an ombré effect (either light-dark pink or blue, depending the gender of baby) and chocolate between each layer. I wanted an extra tall cake with nonpareils on exterior side walls with chocolate icing on top and detailed decoration of many fish to both sides and top of cake. The saying was "One fish, new fish, blue or pink fish." This is what I got...2 basic drawn fish on top of cake that didn't even look like the reference we used during the meeting (waste of my time). The saying was sloppy (all over the place) and they chose to highlight the word blue in blue icing and not the pink, which was white writing like the rest of the saying...poorly executed to say the least. The ombré was barely evident as my guests asked where is the ombré??? There were zero fish on the 1 foot plus tall sides of cake as I requested many fish! See photos attached. The cake was average but grocery store cake seems fresher and more flavorful. ALL my guests were shocked we paid $170 for this cake...they said I should never have paid that much for what we got. The guests also later revealed that they felt the cake was dry and not fresh tasting...doesn't mean it wasn't fresh but didn't taste fresh. I was so disappointed in the cake, particularly since the employee shared that The Masters Bakery just won a huge award for their cakes. For this reason alone, I was not hesitant to spend an exorbitant amount of money on the cake BUT take a look...$170 for this rushed and less than tasteful creation?!!! The wedding cake I had from MB was phenomenal. It was even good a year later. However, this was in 2006. I went to a party in January and the hostess was upset with the cake she received because she said it wasn't what she ordered. It tasted ok-not great, not terrible. I went to a friend's graduation party a few weeks ago and there was another beautiful MB cake. Immediately upon cutting a slice, it crumbled. This cake was the driest cake I've ever eaten. Good flavor, but we were joking that we felt like dogs with peanut butter on the roofs of our mouths. Perhaps they have new bakers? New ownership? I don't know. It's a shame.
