Our visit to a small butterfly farm in Maui turned out to be one of the most charming and memorable experiences of our trip. I brought my two granddaughters. The highlight, without a doubt, was when the butterflies gently landed on the flowers and then on the girls themselves. My oldest granddaughter absolutely loved it. You could see the excitement in her eyes as she held the flowers and watched the butterflies flutter all around her. It was one of those moments you wish you could freeze in time. The presentation was wonderful informative, engaging, and easy for all ages to understand. The woman leading it was especially knowledgeable and had such a natural way with children. That truly made a difference. At one point, my youngest granddaughter was having a little bit of a hard time, but the presenter handled it with such kindness and patience. She made her feel comfortable and included, which meant so much to me as a grandmother. This wasn't a flashy or extravagant excursion it was something better. We've been to Maui several times, but this was our first time going to the Maui Butterfly Farm. I think it's a good one-and-done experience if you have younger kids and you're looking for an activity to do, but I don't think I'll come back. In my opinion, the experience doesn't justify the cost. Adults are $39 and kids 6 months to 10 years are $34. Google considers an infant as a child 12 months of age or under, but the butterfly farm considers an infant to be under six months old (ticket is free). It felt a little ridiculous paying $34 for our eight month old. They didn't even ask us to wash her hands because they knew she wouldn't be touching a butterfly. If I could give half stars, I would probably give 3.5. We were told that the rain also affected the butterflies from landing on us and flying around because they avoid the rain so they don't get hurt. Maybe we would've had a better experience if the weather was better. The lady working there was extremely nice though! read more

I meant to write this review much sooner. While in Kihei one of the best exhibits I went to was the Maui Butterfly farm. It is a bit difficult to find with GPS, but we eventually found it (15 minutes late). We were quickly let in, and told not to fret because they would go over the part we missed at the end of the tour. The people running this farm are so knowledgeable and easy going. We first had to wash our hands before entering the enclosures. The tour lasted about 45 mins, and we got to meet and engage with butterflies. We learned about the metamorphosis caterpillars go through to become butterflies, about their lifespan as butterflies, and their love of sweet nectar. At the end I purchased a pair of butterfly wing earrings, and I absolutely adore them. Overall, this experience was a 5/5! read more

If you're not interested in learning about the life cycle and important of butterflies, then this is not for you. We booked this mainly for our 5 and 2 1/2 year old granddaughters. They thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes - the price might be a little hefty for some ($38 for adults and $30 for kids) but throughout the various stages of the tour, we all got to hold a caterpillar, a butterfly and a praying mantis. There are signs saying must book tours online. For the days schedule, many of the time slots were sold out. I'm glad they keep the groups small as the tents can only hold so many people. (Our group was only 3 families.) We were greeted by the owner of the place who told us to wash our hands, spray ourselves with some insect repellent (to avoid mosquito bites and then given an ice cold small bottle of water. This was all very nice. (A porta potty was also nearby if needed.) Our tour guide was excellent in explaining the life cycle of the butterfly. After holding a caterpillar, we went into the first tent where we dipped our finger in some fruit choice to try and get a butterfly on our fingertip. That was fun - I think we all got a chance to hold one after a few tries. We then went to another tented area where we saw some praying mantis which must be kept separate from the butterflies and again we were able to hold one. For the last tent we were all given bunches of flowers to attract butterflies. There were at least 3 different varieties of butterflies and it's cool to have them land on the flowers we were holding. Before leaving we were given a sticker and a packet of seeds to plant flowers. Note: do not wear sunblock before going as it kills the butterflies as stated on their website. Other pros: there are nearby farmers market, fruit smoothie/pineapple juice food truck, a general store that sells everything you can think of including musubi and hot dog. Leonada's Pie Shop is a short walk nearby and the line goes out the door sometimes. There are also other food trucks nearby if you walk a little further - so no shortage on food options. read more

Went with my husband and 2 year old. We weren't sure she'd enjoy it but she totally did, as did we! This was such a fun family activity! Our guide was so knowledgeable and so friendly! Reservations are a must!! You do need to make them online before visiting, luckily we were able to get them the day before we went. I did not plan on going since tickets are $30 for kids and $38 for adults, so for a family it's a hefty price tag, but I'm glad we decided to go last minute. I loved how immersive it was. It's located in the same area as Leoda's Pie shop (a MUST get if you're in the area), along with a Hawaii-grown outdoor tent which was great for getting gifts (ie nuts, chocolates) along with fresh fruit. The farm is very small and the tour is 45 minutes. They talk about caterpillars first, and you get to hold them, then you walk into one butterfly tent where they use fruit nectar to entice them onto your hands. In the next tent, we got to hold praying mantis', and in the last tent they gave us bouquets of flowers where we must've had almost 10 butterflies on our bouquets. I've been to butterfly rooms before, where you just kind of walk through, so it was really quite magical to be able to hold a butterfly, and hold flowers carrying 10 butterflies! read more

I passed this farm on the way to black rock beach so I wanted to check them out. They go by appointments only so you can book online on their website for a good price and you can choose what time you want to come. This place is kid friendly and they will have a really good time here. In the beginning of the tour, they teach you about different stages of the butterflies from caterpillars to butterflies. They let you hold the caterpillars and explain what they eat and what plants the butterfly likes. After that you get to go into a screened place where you can try and get a butterfly to land on your flower they provide or your finger. It's very cool to actually have a butterfly land on your hand! After that tour you go into another screened area and they have butterflies mixed with praying mantis and you get to hold them as well if you're not squeamish. Towards the end of the tour they provide you seeds to take home to grow some plants for the butterflies. I am really glad I was able to check this place out. read more

Small but interesting little 'farm'. You are greeted by the staff and as you try to shake their hand, they put a catepillar in your hand... unexpected for sure and it may creep out some folks. However they are harmless and won't bite or sting you. They are only interested in leaves. As you are checking in and trying not to let your caterpillar escape, we learn a lot about caterpillars and chrysallis and butterflies in general. Very interesting. After the initial introduction we proceed to the first fly-house. Instructions on how to attract the butterflies and have them land on you and by golly it worked. In the next fly house the butterflies are attracted to flowers and so we were handed large blooms as we entered that space. And not only did we have a lot of butterflies come and check us out, but also a couple of praying manits. Besides the butterflies, you may encounter feral chickens, which seem to be all over the islands and dig holes everywhere. So watch out for those holes as they are big enough for you to twist an ankle in those. Added bonus, free parking and a farmer's market and a smoothie truck right next to it. read more

We looked up things to do with our grandson whom is a little over two years old. We arrived and there were a total of 8 other people was was perfect. The lady gave us a lot of great information about butterflies that none of us knew before. We walked through structures with netting to keep the butterflies inside. We were given a branch with flowers and leaves to hold up inside to attract the butterflies. We also put our finger in a container of cut up peaches in syrup which attracts the butterflies. This was the highlight of my 9 year olds trip to Hawaii. We had driven by the farm on our previous trip, but couldn't fit it into our schedule. This was such a great experience and I'm so glad we did it with the kids! I actually went into this not a huge fan of butterflies but have a huge appreciation for them now and even would love to plant more pollinator friendly flowers in my garden. Our guide was amazing!
