This was a great experience and I was very happy with the stay. I spent a week here and really enjoyed it. This is the only hotel I've ever stayed in that issues you ear plugs when you check in. There is a Hwy on one side and regular train traffic on the other side. I didn't have a problem with the train whistle or road noise and thought it was quaint and an interesting part of the visit. When I'm on the road, I don't expect to duplicate my bedroom at home. The breakfast each morning was hot and good (coffee, eggs, sausage & biscuits). The rooms were small but clean, with a coffee pot, free bottled water and cableTV. I had a king size bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom was very very very small but everything worked and the maids did a great job getting everything back to pristine shape each day. This is very much a 40's or 50's style motor inn and I really liked being able to park right outside my door - my dog liked that too! I'll stay here again. read more

Yes, it's all true what you read. The Maverick Inn is a bit away from Big Bend parks, yes, the water pressure is low and yes, the honkin train is quite annoying. But however, as long as you don't realize staying in a dry desert and Americans still can't handle crossing railways in a proper manner, you have to deal with it. I did and had a great time here! The Maverick is one special place, as well as their owners. I stayed a few days and loved it all. Awesome art all over the place, individual rooms, great breakfast with goodies from the recommended local bakery. What else do I need than some lovely southern hospitality? read more

Now here is a real hoot. I managed to get a reservation at this quaint little inn that looks like something you might find in Santa Fe or Taos. Anet was excited, from the time hit the parking lot till we left the next day. She wanted to come back and stay here every night. Oh well we will get to stay there again, but I am thinking it will be on one of our trips through Alpine. The place is beautiful and the staff knows how to treat people. I mean they really know how to treat people. The breakfast nook is open all the time and is a help yourself. There is a herd of cats living outside that follow the owners (feeders) in the morning. The room appointments are so beautifully southwest. I guess you will just have to come try it for yourself. read more

After two years, this place is still absolutely wonderful! It's a bit noiser than I remember. The train goes right by this location, which sucks and makes this place loud. However, it's only annoying at night and they provide earplugs. A small thing to deal with! read more

FILTHY floors and absentee, rarely-visits-the-property Manager Though we liked the room layout there were a number of things that made this a much less than enjoyable three day stay. Upon arrival they failed to honor the rate we were quoted during two phone calls two days earlier and the 'absentee' manager wasn't interested enough, or polite enough, to return my pleasant but questioning phone call to her within 10 minutes of our arrival, explaining what happened and asking why the quoted rate wasn't honored. We stayed three days and never saw or heard from her. Two desk attendees, who were pleasant, told us that she, the manager, rarely visits the property. Cleaning rags were not re-supplied until we asked after the second day, but much worse we discovered that the tile floor was FILTHY when my wife spilled a bit of water and used a towel to wipe it up, and I mean FILTHY! The towel was BLACK! Yuck! Our used coffee cups were not cleaned or replaced, and our used and empty pizza and salad boxes were not taken from the room! Unreal. When I complained about the filthy floor I was told by the desk attendant that the floors really needed deep cleaning but that our room was one of a number they hadn't gotten to! She told me that I should have seen how bad the lobby floors were before they were deep cleaned, that they were filthy. I believed her since our floors were filthy. She went on to say that she was sorry and that they were trying to work with their cleaning staff but that didn't help me! The place really needs a better, more interested manager and a cleaning staff that cares and doesn't try to fool people by making the beds, trying to make it 'look' like they cleaned the room, and skipping the cleaning part. I'm sure the shower floor, which is dark tile like the rest of the floor, was filthy as well. I'm sure that most surfaces and areas of the room were filthy. I hope my wife and I didn't catch anything. They don't have breakfast, fine, they don't clean the rooms and have filthy tile floors, YUCK, that is not fine or acceptable. This property needs new management and much greater attention to the cleaning and taking care of rooms. We visited in mid March, 2018. read more

I would have given this place four starts for location, cleanliness and comfort. Unfortunately I left some expensive clothes behind in my rush to the next destination. I called twice (right away) and was told "Nothing has been turned in." As far as I am concerned this is theft and management should be more diligent in not tolerating this from employees. read more

Ok. No. Not again. The staff is super friendly. But not competent. My duvet cover was dirty. The maid did not change or make the bed, just pulled up the covers; and left his/her vape pipe in the room. The sheet was so thin that I had to surf all night long as it slipped and slid on the plastic mattress cover that had no mattress pad. The hotel has no hand soap for guests. You are supposed to use bath gel. The ice machine didn't work; no ice. When "fixed" it set itself in "alarm" at 10:30pm, no staff on site, we had to get up go out and unplug it but shouldn't have bothered because the train whistle all night long would have drowned it out. But....we only had to kill one flying cockroach and empty one pincher bug out of the coffee pot. Oh, and take our used glasses back to the office because the maid didn't give us clean ones. So had we had our own soap, glasses, sheets, bug spray and provided our own maid service we may have been more satisfied. Won't go back. read more

The Maverick Inn is a great spot to stay in Alpine. The rooms are very clean, the manager and employees are most friendly and helpful. The rates are reasonable, too. But the best part is that they allow pets, and have several grassy areas for them. Our room had a little balcony overlooking the fire~pit area (grassy) and it was very peaceful. Horseshoes and a stake are back there, too, for playing. A huge BBQ, in case you want to cook your own dinner is there. A side patio, under the arbor is very nice to have breakfast. Sage is planted there and I watched a tiny hummingbird go from blossom to blossom for a long time. So very peaceful! There IS a train coming through now and then, but each room has a couple of packs of disposable ear plugs provided. I personally love the sound of a train's horn, so it didn't bother me at all. The swimming pool was great, and very clean...towels aplenty. Also, in the pool area, there is a shaded patio, for those who can't take full sun, with a large table and chairs and a BBQ. Very nice. It is across the street from Sul Ross, so very convenient for students and parents. Staying at the Maverick was so pleasant, for me, that it made me want to live there! LoL. I highly recommend it to all, especially traveling with a pet. read more

My husband, French Bulldog pup and I stayed here in room 34 for 12/30 and 12/31/2016 to explore the areas nearby. We really enjoyed our stay. From the welcome note, to the incredible hospitality by all the staff, I felt so comfortable there. It was nice to get breakfast and coffee and sit out in the back area near the firepit. Our bed was so comfortable and we loved the southwestern decor. The room was a little tiny, but very sweet. Thank you again for making our stay very pleasant. read more

This was a really nice place. Venetian plaster walls or a good fake treatment.. Rustic wood floors, wood walls, cool wood doors and cabinets. Five stars for aesthetics that fit the surroundings.. 40" tv. Fridge microwave, coffee. End tables. Quiet AC. Deck looks out on trailer park, then mountains, too bad the trailer park is there, it would be nice to have an uninterrupted view of the mountains. Bad thing: Unit 10 backs up to the breakfast area, and you can hear lots of galomping as the breakfast area is just on the other side of the headboard. Expect to wake up early.. Very nice desk lady, I forget her name. The courtyard is ok, with a little sitting area surrounded by a wall. Brewkfast area is ok. Floors are noisy. Comfy beds. Overall we had a nice experience at this place. And we liked the town of Alpine, it's cool in a West Texas kind of way. read more

SO ADORABLE! I loved this place. Cute, comfortable, and immaculately clean. Breakfast was delightful. It was our first time traveling with a dog because we happened to be dogsitting, and the dog-friendliness was exceptional with a dog bed and treats left in the room. However, I'm not a dog owner and I like spaces to be very clean, and the Maverick Inn is that too. Would LOVE to return. read more

We came here last year to visit family and this place was so pretty. The pool wasn't open and the breakfast wasn't up to their usual standards because the food delivery person hadn't arrived all day. However, this trip has gone off without a hitch! We got here super late and since the office only stays open till nine, the people were nice enough to leave a key under our matt. We woke up to get breakfast and I was happy to find that there was meat this time! Everything I liked last time, the cute western kitschy rooms and the private patio area (we're in room 11 which is a larger room so I'm not sure if this the same for all the other rooms), the super cute invitation to tea with the bigelow chamomile and green tea with glass cups and saucers along with free water and glass mason jar mugs. The room itself (which I posted a picture of last year. Since we're staying I. The same room I figured I wouldn't need to retake it) has a California king sized bed which is HUGE, and a regular king sized bed. There's also a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, flat screen tv, a/c, and hairdryer. The bathrooms are Texas sized (for those that don't know the saying "everything's bigger in Texas" it means it's also HUGE...personally I think Texas king makes more sense than California king but that's just me). read more

Love the Maverick Inn! I've stayed three times now and it's always a pleasure. Stylish, good value, great coffee. It is worth paying a little more for a nicer room if you can swing it. The only small bummer is that the breakfast seems to have gone downhill from the first time I stayed, a few years ago. They now offer only eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy and one kind of yogurt. If there had been even one additional option--toast, a bagel, cereal--I would have been happy as a clam! (There are older photos posted here showing more breakfast options, but they didn't have them on my last two visits.) No big deal though, we headed to Judy's Bread and Breakfast for the sticky buns, which were delicious. read more

The Beds were excellent,The place was very clean . My fiancé and I loved this hotel and it's southern decorum.The location is SO convenient for folks coming in from out of town and it's literally across the street from Sul Ross university which has the cutest cactus garden. We have a dog and really appreciate that each room's door goes directly to the "outside". Cute communal area where you can sit and eat and hangout with your dog. Our room was clean BUT it's true, room 42 has a tiny shower. None the less we really liked the hotel and would definitely come back if ever in Alpine again! read more

This is a former little mom and pop motor inn next to the major highway through Alpine, TX and across from the university. The recent rehab (2009?) is so impressive. I was DELIGHTED with my experience here. It is now an adorable little stuccoed hacienda style inn with VERY nicely furnished rooms and bungalows. The saltillo tile floor trims, Talavera coffee cups and saucers and heavy tapestry drapes utterly transport you back to 19th century Mexico. Much care is taken to ensure the rooms stay beautiful, clean and are very welcoming. There is a train track a couple hundred yards behind the hotel but the train seems to roll through slowly and does its whistling on the outskirts of town. I was concerned that it would be loud and intrusive but it is just far enough away to be in the background. For me, it just added to the "old west" experience, and I'm from the west. The staff who checked me in were cheerful and welcoming. A little breakfast is available in the lobby including coffee, cereals, fruit, milk and juices. Further, the lobby includes a small library of great books about Big Bend and the area in general. I was made to feel very welcome, the inn is so quiet, warm and charming and the rates are competitive with the nicer chain hotels. I highly recommend this inn for a romantic vacation. read more

I headed out to West Texas this past spring to go see the stars at the McDonald Observatory. I thought I'd stay in Marfa, as that is the one town I had heard of and all of it's quirkiness. I am so glad I stumbled onto Alpine and in turn the Maverick Inn. This place was absolutely perfect. The décor inside and out was so charming and inviting. The staff was cheerful, polite and helpful. And the location of this place was perfect. I drove into Marfa one afternoon and had a chance to walk around. Then cruised up to the McDonald Observatory(40 minutes or so) to take part in the Star Party. If you are going to Alpine or anywhere near it, I highly recommend the Maverick Inn. It was my first stay there but definitely not my last. Long live Alpine TX and long live the Maverick Inn!! read more

The inn is out of the old west. Decor is well done. Staff very friendly and informative. The bed is comfortable. The bathroom is small and I just had enough room to take a shower. The bathroom size is dependent on the room size as I found out from my friends who were traveling with me. The hotel provided ear plugs because of the trains. Train at 4:40 am blowing their whistle will wake the dead. A bit pricey for what we got. But if you want the flavor of an old west place this is it. read more

Stayed at The Maverick Inn the second week of March in 2015 (4 days, 6 nights). Room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Our room had a sink, microwave, mini fridge, and hot plate. It has kind of an old west/country vibe to the decor. It was a perfect central location for our stay in Big Bend country. We were about 15-20 minutes away from Marfa, about 1 hour away from the McDonald Observatory, and about 1.5 hours away from Big Bend National Park. The only con to our stay was the noisy a$$ train but we adjusted to it after one night. The Maverick Inn is very kind though and had ear plugs available in the room for light sleepers. read more

We just stayed here for 4 nights for our wedding anniversary and loved it! Driving through Alpine, it was obvious that we definitely chose one of the nicest hotels, and definitely the coolest and most unique place to stay. Our room was very comfortable and had the best west Texas charm and decor. There is so much personality here. But our favorite thing about this inn was how nice the staff was. We met at least 3 of the staff members and they knew who we were, why we were there, and they were so quick to help us and meet our every need. I loved how the kitchen was open with little snacks and drinks throughout the day, and I loved the conversations we had with the people there (both the staff and other travelers). We will definitely be back. UPDATE: I totally forgot to mention how pet-friendly this inn is. We paid a very reasonable amount to register our dog. They provided her with a bed and treats, which was sweet and cool. They also left a little west TX gift basket in the room for us two-leggers. Just more reasons why we loved this place. read more

We loved staying here! Mark, the manager, was incredibly nice and friendly right off the bat, and willing to help us out in whatever way possible. I had an awesome breakfast the next morning, the rooms were clean and super comfortable, and we were upgraded to a nicer room at no cost (just cause Mark thought we'd like it a little better). We were bad guests and overslept, missing the check out time, but Mark was very accommodating anyway. Will definitely be back and recommend to anyone else! read more

Really enjoyed our one-night stay here. Bed was extremely comfortable.

After reading the various reviews and traveling for 10 hours in cold and rainy weather we were looking forward to a pleasant respite and rest. The hotel decor and amenities in the room is on point and friendly staff greeted us. However, I was very disappointed when we did not have hot water to shower and the internet service was out in the rooms. The only area that had internet service was the lobby area which closed at 10 p.m., we needed to connect (Skype calls) as service is limited in the area to contact family. Likewise, the breakfast was subpar. I would also suggest in room 26 the curtains be brought down a bit as the street light comes through the room, making it difficult to sleep. My biggest complaint was being unable to shower in the morning with 30 F weather due to lack of hot water. All the best! read more

We stayed here for a few nights during spring break. The room was nice and charming and included a frig and microwave. The price was better than anything in Marfa. The traffic from the road and the train were both loud which was difficult for our kids to sleep through. Yes, they provide earplugs, but that's not realistic for children. My biggest complaint was the breakfast and I'm dumbfounded by the glowing reviews of the breakfast. The website claims "expanded continental breakfast with handmade pastries and granola" which is just not true. Everything is pre-packaged and to be honest my breakfast at Holiday Inn Express was better. The only good part was the Big Bend Coffee. read more

Unless you want to live out of your suitcase, I would not stay at the Maverick Inn. I was surprised that apparently none of the rooms have a dresser or even shelves to put any of your clothes, other than a single shelf above the 4 foot hanging rod in lieu of a closet. When I checked in, I thought it was just my room and was going to ask to move, but was told all the rooms are this way. If you are staying for a few days, it is really inconvenient and there is no reason for it, as there were definitely places in the room where a small chest of drawers or dresser would fit. The bathroom, likewise has no place to even put a toothbrush, unless you count the small towel shelf above the toilet. There was a naked sink with no cabinet and although there was room to install some small shelves on the wall above the towel rack or y the shower, there was nothing .Also, the wiring for the ceiling fan above the bed was done so that the ceiling light in the adjacent section of the room is on the same wall switch and had to stay on if you want the fan on. You can turn off the light on the fan itself with a pull chain, but not the other light while the fan was on. While the room was quaint and interesting, I would not recommend it unless you are okay with having few amenities and living out of your suitcase. read more

I'm limiting this review to three stars for a couple of reasons. First, breakfast was almost non-existent even though we were there at 8:30 that morning. The choices were biscuits and gravy, a few pastries, yogurt, and some hard boiled eggs. No meat and little protein. We ate elsewhere, carb loading may be fine for a long hike or bike ride, but not for weary travelers who'll be driving to the next destination. The next problem was parking. You have to parallel park in front of your room. Not a severe problem, but in a state known for large pickup trucks in can get interesting. We were lucky since our neighbor was on a motorcycle. Getting in and out was a bit easier. The room itself was great. Wonderfully decorated and comfortable. The bathroom and shower were a bit tight, but both were clean and ready. Some have complained about the trains, but we barely noticed. There's a note in the room that the train conductor that liked to blow the whistle was fired. Don't believe it. He was rehired. It was still barely noticeable. read more
