The courses offered by The Meisner Technique Studio have been wonderful for me. This review covers the intro classes, the formal training, the commercial elective, and the business class offered after the training is complete. I am a software engineer, and I first found the studio online in the hope of improving the way I communicate. I wanted to speak more clearly, improve my pronunciation, and become more confident. I also thought it would be a good opportunity to dip my toes into acting. The intro classes were a perfect fit for me in that regard. I made the right decision in continuing through the training, and I owe a great deal to these courses. My friends and family have seen vast improvements in the way I speak and carry myself. I also just so happened to fall in love with acting. For someone who had never really encountered the acting world before, this technique has been a blessing, for lack of a better word. It centers on active listening and being present. That alone has been instrumental in my life. My imagination has grown, and, most importantly to me, so has my confidence. I found confidence in discovering that there are people out there like me who share my beliefs and enthusiasm. What I especially valued was finding a safe space where I could be myself, while the person I was working with could also be themselves. In a world of masks and appearances, that experience was incredibly refreshing. I owe a lot to Maeve Montgomery, who taught the intro classes I took. She is warm, approachable, and genuinely an excellent teacher. She understands each student while also being aware of the dynamics of the whole class. Without her, I do not think I would have continued into the formal training. She was a wonderful introduction to acting, and her passion for both the craft and teaching was immediately apparent. Then there is Jim Jarrett, the studio's founder and teacher of the formal training. His enthusiasm and passion for what he does have no equal, and they make a lasting impression. This class expects a lot from you. I was never late, I prepared, and I put in the effort. That effort paid off. It is deeply rewarding to prepare the way the class teaches you to prepare, do the work, and then see the result. I have truly grown through this class and found myself. I still have my career as a software engineer, but I now better understand what I value about it, including interacting with my team. I am more confident when presenting material to other people. I have learned to embrace the camera, embrace the spotlight, and be myself. I have also learned how to keep growing. One of the course's most important lessons is that learning never stops and the training never truly ends. We are given tools that allow us to continue doing the work ourselves. And I want to act. It is crazy to think now that I would do anything but act. This is who I am now. I was also able to take the commercial class early in the training. It teaches you how to begin building a career: pursuing jobs, creating a résumé with limited experience, presenting yourself professionally, and understanding what it takes to work as a commercial actor. The course was short but effective and very tactical. It focused on exactly what you need to begin working, while giving us tools we can continue using to improve on our own. The business class took that even further. Once the formal training was over, we had the opportunity to take it, and it is very different from the training itself. I grew even more. It has been a roller coaster, but a fun ride, and it contains a wealth of information. Again, the theme is learning how to continue learning. If we keep drilling and applying the information, I believe it will pay great dividends. The formal training is now over for me, and it is time to get to work. I feel increasingly confident that I understand what is expected of a professional actor and what I need to polish: my résumé, headshots, self-tapes, and audition technique. The course covers it all. You need to commit, and that is what I have done. I am very glad I did. I am still improving as a person. I do not want to spoil the fun, but there is a lot in store for anyone who decides to take these courses. A theme shared by all of them is self-improvement, and you get as much out of them as you put into them. I just completed the two-year training at the Meisner Technique Studio and it was without question the most significant, life-changing educational experience I've ever had. This class is something of a miracle. I have no acting experience nor did I have any acting ambition when I started; I merely wanted to try something new and learn another craft that could complement creative writing. But over a short period of time in the intro class, I realized I was participating in something truly special, perhaps even magical. The pedagogy is ingenious. How do you teach something like acting which is imaginary and fictional? It turns out, you begin by teaching the person to be observant, present, and truthful. I came to California from Buckeye Arizona in pursuit of a dream that was looked down upon in the city I grew up in. They told me it wasn't realistic or that my chances are slim. This program is 100% for people who are serious about this craft and want to hone in on their skills. There are no get rich quick schemes or fast tracks here. You will leave with the tools you need to succeed and then it is up to you to use them! Ive been performing (primarliy in theatre) for about 10 years consecutively. However, I've never had a school/teacher/coach that has resonated with me like Meisner Technique Studio. Meisner Technique has really opened my eyes in the way I approach acting. I was looking for a studio that would help me be more authentic and "not act". Ive learned that it's about listening and establishing a true connection with the person across from you. One of the teachings that has stuck with me is -"Dont do what you want to do. Do what you're made to do". My teacher, Maeve, did such a fantastic job of introducing this technique to me and my classmates. She is brilliant at highlighting positive moments, while giving constructive criticism. Especially in an introductory class, it's important to be cognizant of the different levels in the class, and Maeve does a great job of that. It's amazing to see the development of the class in 1 session (12 classes). Every class builds off of the one prior. And when you add the different layers and elements to your craft, you start to see the improvement. I started in Intro 1 and quickly decided to continue into Intro 2. I have just graduated from the Formal Training at the MTS with Maeve Montgomery. This has been the most challenging, formative, and amazing experience of my entire life. This review is for Filaree who taught my intro levels 1 and 2 class. Discounting middle school, I've never taken an acting class before and really didn't know what to expect at all. It was such an amazing whirlwind 6 month experience. I learned so many things and grew so much as a person in ways I definitely could not anticipate. Filaree was a really kind guide into this weird process of letting go of many inhibitions our mind places on us that take us away from being authentically us. I'm really grateful that she, and this acting school in general, provided a precise container that forced us to really take the class seriously. It's really rare in this day and age to be strict about showing up on time, or not using your phone/other distractions in class. But without that it's so easy to get people stay with the class who don't care at all. In a partner-based acting class, that really sucks. It's a great feeling to know you can rely on your partner because they care. And about Filaree in general- she was able to give useful, sometimes difficult, feedback always with love and without ever being rude or callous. By the end of the two intro classes, the Meisner school would say I'm not an actor yet, but I feel I've learned enough to try my hand at it. Filaree is easily one of the best, most kind, sensitive, grounded, and honest teachers I've had in my creative journey. Just like you, I went online to look for the best acting school in the Bay Area and it led me to The Meisner Technique Studio. I ended up interviewing with Jim for the Intro class, as I felt I wasn't ready for the challenge of the Formal training. I was worried the Intro class wouldn't deliver on the teachings I was still hoping for. Not only did Filaree deliver, she was able to create safe space for a lot of us who felt uncomfortable stepping into the vulnerability that real acting requires. For six months she helped us stretch further and further into truthful, present acting. She taught the complexity of the Meisner Technique (which can seem deceivingly simple) in a way that I really understood. Most of all, I had so much fun and I won't forget the pieces of advice she gave us. The most pivotal decision in growing my dream, acting career, art, and love for the human experience thus far. Before coming here, I'd often be faced with the question... "What do you do?" I'd struggle to even include the word "actor" in my response. After my time here studying, loving, exploring, working, and dreaming with Jim Jarrett and my fellow classmates, I can confidently answer people with, without hesitation, "I'm an actor". By the end of the training, I've learned what it truly means to say those words and to really mean them. It's more than just an acting class. It's a class in becoming a professional dreamer. How do you live the life of an artist... and sustain it with discipline and health? You learn the craft, yes, but that's one part of the equation. I can't remember a time I really looked within myself so deeply and intimately. Why am I the way I am now? What happened to me? Where do I come from? Why do I do X thing? ETC. I learned how to identify key things about myself that make me unique -- my strengths, weaknesses, stretches, triggers -- not just as an actor, but as a human. I will be honest, I had to dive deep -- and it hurt. I grew and continue to grow because of it. I experienced, for me, my highest of highs, lowest of lows, and freest of freedoms here -- places I never thought I could go, and resisted going for years. I learned how to go to these sometimes scary places, healthily. I rediscovered my buried inner child here and my sense of imagination. I learned about truth and dedicating myself to it. I learned about freedom. I learned what it means to really listen. My time here required incredible commitment, dedication, sacrifice, time, and energy. But that's just one of the many reasons why I cannot speak highly enough of this school. This is not the kind of acting class you can dabble in, miss occasionally, or... be late to. Some would argue it's a bit much, but I say the rigor of the curriculum was why I grew so much in two years. No time wasted. Why be late to your dream? Jim and the students of this school raise the bar to the highest standard -- all while supported by love, patience, and health. Because of all I learned and experienced here, I had the honor of being cast in Netflix's live immersive theatre piece, "Stranger Things: The Experience" during the summer of 2022. I became a working actor that summer. I was able to apply everything I learned at this school to the professional world, from audition to my final show. I remember the astounding feeling of receiving the script for the first time and knowing exactly what I needed to do. And, I did. Another thing that stood out to me. This is not a class where you meet weekly, indefinitely until the end of who-knows-when. You come in with the goal to get out. A bittersweet, but beautiful and necessary thing. I left those doors with nothing short of confidence, empowerment, a full heart, and... the tools and mindset needed to continue growing my dream after this chapter has closed.
