Came here mid- Oct for a wedding, the reception and ceremony was located in second floor, where can accommodate for about 100-150 guests. I like the rustic atmosphere, but there are several things that I don't like : 1. There are several pillars in the room. Too many pillars..actually. The room itself is beautiful even with minimal decoration, unfortunately, I couldn't see the bride and groom during the whole ceremony because the pillar just blocked my sight. 2. The stair is really shaky and there are no lights in Stairwell ( they don't have elevator in the building), so it's really dark esp in the night. This was one of the coolest wedding venues we've been too! My husband was in a wedding here and because we were flying in from out of town on the day of the wedding we came straight to the venue to get ready. This building had beautiful spaces all up and down the floors. On the floor we were on there were three bathrooms with tons of antique and vintage flavor. My girlfriend (the bride) told me that they got to choose all the furniture that was used as decor on the day of their wedding as part of the rental. It was stunning! Checked out this venue as a potential wedding spot. It's very eclectic. For example, there are numerous types of lamp shades hanging from the ceiling and an entry way of individual mirrors. You'd truly get your way here if you were planning an event! The top floor ($8000) can hold 300 people and has various small but open coves. There's a lot of light. The 2nd floor ($6000) holds 150 people. Both floors have kitchens. You can use their caterers and have the facility fees waived. I'd say this is a very great space for lots of types of events and photo shoots, but it feels a little too rustic and eclectic for a wedding in my opinion. My husband and I LOVED this place and could not have asked for a better venue for our wedding! We had looked at nearly a dozen places before coming here on a whim. The moment we stepped onto the 4th floor, we know it was the one. From the amazing skylight to the high ceilings to the exposed brick to the little nooks and crannies of the pavilion and library to the amazing pieces of antique furniture you can pick out for your wedding day. It was everything we've ever hoped for. The Metropolitan Building is a raw space venue - so while they do offer in-house catering,everything else must be brought in separately. They offer two floors to host weddings. The 2nd floor has a romantic, vintage charm and holds up to 150 while the 4th floor is more of the rustic side and holds up to 200. Both the 2nd and 4th floor spaces have a ton of character so you can bring as little or as much decor in as you'd like. We were a heavy DIY wedding on top of choosing a raw space venue, so we knew we had a lot of planning to do. We went with an outside caterer and we ensured most of the vendors we chose were at least familiar with the building (so important!) They have an open house every Saturday from 10-2pm which we definitely used to our advantage to visit again and again to plan out our vision. The manager Carlos is one of the best people you could ever have on your side during a stressful time such as wedding planning! He always answered his phone, answered our incessant questions, and more importantly, calmed our worries. He offered us the use of the basement the Friday prior to the wedding to work on our flowers. He let us start makeup the morning of at 8 AM since the venue officially opens at 7:30 AM (even though your rental technically runs from 9 AM - 12 AM). He allowed us to do a quick rehearsal the day before the wedding since there was no wedding booked on that floor at the time. He was amazing! The Metropolitan Building runs weddings like clockwork. They have an operator for their (amazingly cool) freight elevator at all times, and even place furniture inside for ultimate guest comfort! They have waitstaff stationed outside the 2nd and 4th floor doors so that guests from different weddings never run into one another. It was seamless. Like everyone said, if you decide to have your wedding at the Metropolitan Building, be prepared for old school communication (checks only and the contract was a single sheet of paper). Awesome venue. We had our wedding here on the second floor. I was doubtful at first. Our conservative parents were more traditional and were hoping for a more "elegant" and modern place. However, the spacing here for ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, and dance floor were perfect. Pictures also came out pretty impressive. The Metropolitan Building is definitely for those who appreciate the vintage, rustic, and artistic feel. Prices for renting it for the night was also relatively reasonable for New York. The Metropolitan Building really is something out of the ordinary. This was the second venue my fiance and I looked at, and as soon as we walked onto the 2nd floor, my fiance was completely wowed (and he is never visibly impressed with anything!). It's romantic and vintage and decorated to make you feel like you're in your own private little french chateau hosting an intimate gala. The huge windows flood the space with light and every nook is instagrammable. Like a guest commented, "you can't take a bad photo in this place.". We chose this place pretty much on the spot. We loved how it was already decorated enough that we didn't have to do much more to spruce up the place, and we loved how the rooms were separated in a way that created a good flow of traffic. Their in-house caterer is Maia Pearl and you get a discount on your venue rental price if you choose them. Their menu options are very extensive and looked amazing, but we ultimately went with another caterer. The venue staff was extremely accommodating and helpful, moving and re-moving things around as I planned my vision. Carlos and some staff even stayed with us the whole day of the wedding to make sure things ran smoothly. Like other reviewers mentioned, communication is bit medieval. Phone and in-person is the best way to get reliable and immediate information, as emails sometime go unread or breezed over. Something I'd also be cautious of is the season. This is an old building and doesn't have central air. My July wedding hovered in the upper 80s and while the window AC units were on, it definitely started getting warm inside with all the guests moving around and dancing. But since we were the last wedding of the summer and the only wedding that weekend, Carlos pretty much gave us the run of the whole building, which was fantastic for us! read more

A dump of a venue only a millennial would find redeeming. Stained sofas and broken furniture are available as props for your special occasion. The kitchen for your caterer consists of a slop sink, oven, fridge cases and a few tables. When your caterer is berating her staff there will be no soundproofing just some tall broken shutters to partition the area. Be sure you are up to date on your tetanus vaccine. read more

Just had our wedding here in January and we cannot say enough how perfect it was! We had 100 guests on the 2nd floor and used the in-house caterer Maira Pearl. The space is so fantastic because it has a ton of character built into it, you don't need to do a lot to spruce it up. The staff at Metropolitan is the best! Everything is very low-key but it all gets taken care of, I kept thinking we must have forgotten something because of how easy going it all was. Carlos is a real professional and didn't miss a beat the entire day and evening of our wedding. There was a wedding on the 4th floor but you would have never known it, they do a great job of making it feel like you have the whole place to yourself. You need to provide the liquor for the bar and Carlos had great suggestions of different vendors that we could use and they were fantastic, totally hassle free. They have an amazing third floor to take photos on and tons of different furniture that you can use to decorate the space on your day. From the first visit, we knew this was the perfect space for us to host our wedding and promise our lives to each other. We used the 4th Floor and it was truly magical. Carlos, Amanda and their team blew us away. They are so detailed oriented, laid back, reliable and so helpful in every way. I wanted to hang patio lights from the ceiling and Carlos and his team took care of putting them up and taking them down, no problem. Carlos also met with my Husband and I on multiple occasions to walk the space and discuss ideas and always answered my calls and emails. I was neurotic and he calmed my every fear and just handled his business with such ease and professionalism. In addition to helping us with our own decorations, the Owner of the building (owns an antique shop on the 3rd floor) and let us choose pieces to use in the space for our event. It was such a cool touch to add these pieces to the 4th floor and add such an authentic element to our design. We also worked with Sasha, their in-house caterer and even some of most picky guests said the food was out of this world! Sasha does a tasting that you can attend and is super helpful in offering suggestions and putting together the menu. She will also prepare family dishes for your wedding upon request. Seeing the Metropolitan Building transformed into our dream wedding blew us and our guests away. It was beyond magical. If you are a laid back couple looking to work with good people that take their word and promises seriously, then I would suggest you work with the Met Building. Epic disaster - BEWARE My wife and I went through a complete and total nightmare thanks to the owners and staff of the Metropolitan Building. They informed us on a Thursday in December 2016 around 4pm - our wedding was 2 days later on the Saturday - that the fire department had the right and had threatened to come in and shut down any gathering of more than 75 people in their space. The reason: they had been operating for 20 years without a certificate of occupancy or a certificate of public assembly, both of which are required to host large gatherings. They had this news days or even a week or two earlier, but didn't share with us until 2 business days before the wedding. This left us scrambling to find a replacement venue at the very last minute and lead to probably the most stressful 36 hours of our lives. In their defense: they did go out of their way to suggest and show us a nearby alternative venue we could have moved to, though we ended up finding another one on our own. They did reimburse our deposit, and leant us some of the furniture from the building for our reception. They may have rectified the permit situation by now - I would hope that they would have. However, on our wedding day while we were there to take photos, a couple planning to marry there about a month later came in for a walkthrough, and hadn't heard anything about the situation. This, and the fact that they waited to inform us as long as they did are completely inexcusable. I agree with most everything in the positive reviews - the space is gorgeous, the staff friendly, and we had a wonderful time taking photos here during the day before our wedding. That doesn't come close to making up for what they put us through. If you are planning your wedding here, I can't stress enough that you MUST ask them to prove that they have these two documents. I write this review not to seek retribution - it all worked out well for us in the end - but to make sure that other couples don't have to go through what we did. Definitely a cool venue if you're looking for a certain style of wedding. It has a chic vintage style mixed with a little rustic feel. From the outside, it doesn't look like much but the inside, despite the creaky floors have a lot of potential for a lovely wedding. I had some friends who just got married there and their wedding was gorgeous. A different kind of elegant than a modern wedding with sleek lines and polished furniture, for sure, but elegant nevertheless. Think about this place if you're thinking cute vintage. The venue is amazing! Our wedding was on the fourth floor, which is like a rustic urban loft. The second we walked in the door we knew this was the place for us. Everyone commented on how cool the space was. It's super-unique and created an amazing atmosphere for our event. We used a bunch of the antique furniture on the third floor. A really important consideration is how incredible the space was for photos. It rained all day for our wedding, and even though we canceled most our outdoor photos we probably lucked out because we got to spend even more time taking pictures at the venue. (They do lots of professional photo shoots there, and you can see why.) We got so many comments from guests about how cool the space was--again, it was awesome! Carlos, the event manager, was also amazing. He and his team went above and beyond for our event, setting up alter decorations, stringing lights, and working with our caterer. They are a little bit "relaxed" in their communication (for example, we didn't sign a contract), but just trust they have done hundreds of events and will take care of everything. read more

I went here a couple weeks ago for my cousins wedding and was really impressed by the property. Lots of exposed wood beams, big windows, open spaces, and duct work, really gave the Metropolitan an antique look in this reclaimed Long Island City warehouse. It's hard to review the place though other than on overall aesthetics because they aren't a party hall, they're just an empty venue/space for occasions/photo shoots. My cousins wedding went off without a hitch and everything from the food, decorations, ceremony, the skyline views, and service, was amazing. There wasn't a traditional elevator, just a huge lift, that was pretty cool and continued with the warehouse theme. The only comment I have was with their bathrooms, which were less than impressive, and at times even less than acceptable. It had a very old and cramped feeling overall, and when you consider that there was 75 men attending the wedding...seriously, one stall??? read more

From the moment we first visited The Metropolitan Building in August, Carlos the manager helped us every step of the way. He was even personally oversaw the preparations early on the wedding day itself! The happy couple got everything they asked for in the venue, and the space became something magical that evening. This is definitely no boiler-plate venue. With a plethora of props and furnishings, our couple created something exclusively their own. We ultimately decided to use their preferred caterer (Maia Pearl Catering) so we didn't have to worry about rentals or staff, and i'm SO glad we did! The food was absolutely impeccable and Carlos (venue manager/day of coordinator) and his team gave TOP NOTCH service! My husband and I were on a pretty strict budget, and to find a venue like this in New York City at it's price was just insane. The space itself doesn't need very much extra decor as you are allowed to use vintage furniture/antiques from the third floor to decorate. You are also allotted time to take pictures on the third floor which is basically a photographer's playground. We couldn't recommend this venue enough! My wife and I had our wedding in October on the 4th floor. The wedding was perfect, for lack of a better word. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. As beautiful as the space looked when we first visited it during the day, it really went to a whole new level on the night of our wedding. My wife and I could not have picked a better place to get married. It was truly beautiful and the memories and photographs will be enjoyed for a lifetime. This is not like a catering hall. The way it works is that you rent the space with tables and chairs ($6,000 for the 2nd floor and $8,000 for the 4th floor) and then you need to hire your catering separately. They do have a caterer that they are affiliated with and if you use them (name is Maia Pearle), they knock a $2,000 off the space rental fee. The event manager, Carlos, basically runs the show there in terms of building management. He's your "go to" contact for answering all questions about the space. We found him to be extremely responsive to our questions and our needs an extremely helpful. We felt that he often went above and beyond what he should be expected. Since a wedding here entails a lot of DIY and dealing with many different vendors, Carlos was really helpful in filling in the gaps. Things we liked: - The space itself was magnificent. We couldn't have picked a more beautiful place to get married. - It's really big, especially the 4th floor. We were able to have our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception on the same floor. - The space rental includes tables and chairs as well as antiques and furniture from their collection - You don't need to hire a wedding day coordinator because Carlos pretty much fills that role in enough ways Things to consider: - They don't have very good air-conditioning. We visited in the summer and it was hot, so we intentionally did not get married in the summer. Things we didn't like: - They misled us on the cost of the in-house catering. They told us that the Maia Pearle catering was $150 a head. We were planning to use them all along until we went to a tasting and discovered that it's $150 for buffet style. Since our wedding had 170 guests, we wanted to have a seated dinner, and were were told this was $175 per person. So we wound up going with a different caterer, but it would have been nice if they explained the pricing to us up front. - They seem to be anti-technology. Basically, everything is done by phone conversation and hand-written documents. Even our invoice was hand-written. The calendar they use to keep track of which weddings fall on each date is hand-written. They don't use email often. In the end, they delivered and it worked out, but the seemingly blatant contempt for technology made us a little uncomfortable because we feared there would be communication gaps. read more

This review is based solely on the "tour" I took with my fiancé on Saturday, September 3rd. Open houses at the Metropolitan Building take place on Saturday from 10-2, and we were told to come by any time. We showed up, and the front door was not clearly marked. We entered with caution, and a vendor (florist, perhaps?) saw we were confused and told us to go upstairs and someone would help us. We went upstairs and walked into the space- while someone else was setting up their own wedding. We stood around for a few minutes, not sure what to do. I called the building, and they told me they'd be right there to help us. The woman who met us did not offer a tour, and told us we should just wander around and let her know if we had any questions. This was the first venue we saw, and we were so confused. There was no information given on pricing, availability, or catering. We had to push her to sit down with us, and even then it was apparent that she had other things to do. It was understandable, as there was another wedding going on, but I questioned why we were there to begin with when she answered our questions with "it's on the website". We now know, after booking another venue, what an abomination this visit was. This will (hopefully) be the most expensive day of our lives, and we expected to be treated as valued customers, not intruders on someone else's wedding. The venue is unmistakably beautiful. My only conclusion from this experience is that they expect the space to sell itself. However, if this was any indication to how they treat their customers, I'm happy we passed. read more

During the week of my wedding, especially on the day of, Carlos will take care of you and answer any question and accommodate any reasonable requests you have. I choose this venue for my wedding and I've been extremely happy with my decision. We picked the second floor which holds a smaller number of people, while the top floor (fourth) is beautiful but huge. The whole building is an old factory and has many corners where you can take amazing pictures ... definitely a photographer's heaven! The price is extremely reasonable (6,000 $) for 9 hours. Also consider that you can use their rentals (60' round tables, 8x30 rectangle tables, and white padded chairs) which will save you a lot of money. The people that work there are amazing. Carlos has been extremely helpful and flexible and the owner has been so kind to allow us to use almost any furniture we wanted from the up floors where there is hundreds of old chairs, tables, etc... that can be used to add a vintage chic touch to your wedding. There are different levels to have your event and you can even use their assortment of antique furniture. The staff were all great and helpful. Over this weekend we attended an exceptionally enjoyable wedding in this unique venue near the Queenboro Bridge. Once we entered the 2nd floor space which was decorated with an abundance of lovely flower arrangements, we completely forgot the facility once was used as light industrial/warehouse. This offered an opportunity for a much more relaxed evening than in the conventional hotel, catering hall or country club environment. Whoever provided food service was able to serve much tastier tenderloin and salmon than generally expected at such events. Wines & whiskeys were top quality. DJ, sound system, dance floor were fine. The view of the Manhattan skyline during sundown was a bonus. The creative choices made by the bride & groom were geared to offering a totally memorable evening. . read more

My husband and I got married here in May 2015 and we have nothing but good things to say about the venue and the management team. We had our wedding on the 4th floor because of the number of guests we invited. The place has an industrial shabby chic look to it and that's exactly what we were going for. Our guests were all in love with the place. Plenty of space for dancing and the bar area is on the opposite side separated by a pergola-looking room. This set up worked perfectly for us because we had the ceremony and reception on the same floor so while our guests were enjoying the cocktail hour, the caterer moved the chairs and added tables. It was a very smooth process and noone even noticed the transition. Carlos (the manager) always answered my calls and annoying texts and was very flexible with our requests. They were not demanding, it was all kind of informal, no real contract, and they only asked for $1,000 for deposit. We thought that parking around the area would be hard but nobody complained. They also give you access to the place starting at 9:30am in case your caterer needs more time to set up. Parties do need to end by midnight though. read more

Attended a wedding here in Novemeber and it was pretty chilly. The building is old vintage and is not insulated but of course this is the style. It's really cute and picturesque for a photoshoot. They have library book shelves to the ceiling. One downside is the amount of stairs we had to climb, it's not friendly for an older crowd. One other negative is that there are lots of columns and pillars in the space that can block the view of the ceremony. The dinner area is absolutelty gorgeous, and intimate-exactly what you need for a wedding. I would like this space a lot more had I visited in the warmer months but it' definitely a unique experience and different from the typical catering hall. read more

We used the second floor for our intimate wedding and could not have been happier with the results. The setting was gorgeous and we saved a fortune on decor by using the natural setting plus props provided by the venue and included in the price. We also used the in-house caterer, Sasha, who was fantastic. People raved about the buffet-style dinner. While the place has its quirks (type A personalities may have trouble dealing with the somewhat relaxed planning style) if you have faith, the event will come together beautifully on the actual day. read more

The other reviews sum up the positives of the Metropolitan Building - beautiful space, flexible access policy, and a great building manager, Carlos. We were on the 4th floor. Unfortunately, the venue underdelivered and disappointed in several important areas, as listed roughly by how big a problem they caused: 1. Bathrooms not working: the toilets clogged throughout the night, causing extremely long lines for the ladies room (and for some of the night neither of the 2 stalls were working). Not cool at any event, let alone a wedding. 2. Elevator wasn't in service until most guests had arrived: despite repeated questions about how our guests would know where the elevator was (and being promised that someone would be street level directing people), making sure guests wouldn't have to take the stairs, etc... we find out 15 minutes before the ceremony started and after most of our guests had arrived that no one was manning the elevator. Which means most of our guests walked up the 3 flights of stairs in their suits & dresses. Not cool. 3. Promises Not Fulfilled: as directed, we went to pick out furniture the week before our event and sent the venue an email list with pictures of the pieces we wanted on the 4th floor. Day-of, it turns out no one had looked at it, no apologies, just a waste of our time in trying to get it done ahead of time. 4. Surprise! We Changed the Rules: lack of communication from the venue promotes a laid back vibe - which is great, until they change the rules and don't let you know until a month before you wedding date. Like, for example, that you need a liquor license to serve alcohol (a new policy) which our caterer at the time didn't have forcing us to switch caterers or pay $$$$ for a liquor license. Everything worked out but caused unnecessary headache. read more

Metropolitan Building was the only venue that I checked out and I also booked it right away after our first visit. They have an open house on every Saturday, and this is really helpful for DIY couples like us. If you like something vintage, romantic and different from the traditional ballroom style, Metropolitan Building is definitely something you will immediately fall in love with. They have a wide collections of props and furniture that you could use, and even though most of them are quite 'vintage' or maybe even a bit old and 'worn-out', it provides a really vintage and whimsical ambiance ! I used many of the props, including couches, cabinets, books and even candle stands as part of the decor, and that really helped a lot. They have their in-house caterer, Maia Pearl, and you will get a discount on the venue if you decide to use her. We went to the tasting and the food was great! However, we decided to use another caterer last minute as they also provide liquor/beverage services that save us a headache. If you use Maia Pearl, you can bring in your own liquor and they will provide the bartenders. We got a lot of help from Carlos and his team. They really went above and beyond ! They even let us start decorating and had our rehearsal the day before! The only thing that you may need to be aware of is during peak wedding seasons, they most likely have 2 weddings on the same day. Mine was in mid May on the 2nd floor and there was another wedding on the 4th floor. Some guests would get confused and went to the incorrect floor. My bridal suite is located right next to the back door on the 2nd floor and I noticed many employees were walking back and forth around my bridal suite the whole time to have access to the back door. However, they had arranged an employee to stay inside my bridal suite to make sure no one steals anything. Just celebrated our daughters wedding sat on the second floor unique space Carlos is the man rest assured when he says he'll take care of all we requested he truly did he knows what he's doing and everyone there working below him were the same .The place has so much rustic charm and character it's a dream close to NYC easy subway commute .Dancing with the lights of the bridge and the city behind us was so amazing did not see that coming we only visited during the day .Was blown away with the in house catering so that was a wise decision after all .Thank you for a truly best day ever . read more

My daughter and her fiance chose the Metropolitan Building for their wedding. It is not for everyone, but if you are doing a lot of the planning yourself you should seriously consider the Metropolitan Building. The management and staff were absolutely terrific. During the wedding they really went out of their way to be helpful in so many ways. The Metropolitan Building will always be our ultimate dream wedding venue! It is a fantastic space and the entire team was simply wonderful on our big day! We first visited one of the open house events one year prior to our wedding and instantly fell in love with the space! We immediately put down a deposit and slowly began planning our wedding at the Metropolitan Building. Over the next couple of months, we were pretty much on our own with any planning related tasks and we didn't receive much information from the building, other than a brief contract. However, whenever we had any questions, we always received a satisfactory and prompt reply from Amanda via email, as well as from the staff during the in-house caterer food tasting event, which they hold periodically (just ask for it). Once our wedding approached, we got a lot of questions answered by Carlos directly via phone and email. Our tip is to be proactive and to ask for anything your heart desires and they will always respond in a professional, prompt manner and will go above and beyond to make your dreams come true! Ask for a pdf menu (if you're going with the in-house caterer), consider the lighting (only tea lights are allowed/ no 'real' candles), cake placement, event insurance (super easy - Amanda can help you with that), decoration/ props, seating charts, timelines, etc. Be sure to communicate everything you need to Carlos. He was extremely accommodating with everything we needed. He received our beverage order a couple days prior to our wedding, and forwarded ALL the information I gave him (seating charts, timeline, etc.) to his staff so that everyone was on the same page! I didn't have to ask twice for anything, they were so on top of everything on our big day! We were 40 people all together, seated on 5 round tables on the 2nd floor, and the spacing in the dining room, as well as in the cocktail room and the dance floor felt perfect for our crowd (not too empty, not too crowded). The food was great, the bartender and waiters were very professional, our day of coordinator was on top of everything and very accommodating to some minor delays on our part (e.g. our photo shooting on the 3rd floor took longer than expected). Our guests were in awe with our location and nobody could believe what they found inside 44-01 11th St. This location, caterer, and staff are highly recommended by us! My wife and I would like to thank all of the staff at the Metropolitan Building in Long Island City. We just had our wedding on the second floor on October 19th, 2013 and it was amazing. Working with Amanda throughout the process was very easy and she met all our needs at every point. In addition Carlos was at the venue each time I went to answer any questions I had as well as the night of the wedding to make sure things went smooth. They made us feel very comfortable that everything would be great and it was. They invite you to the 3rd floor to choose from a ton of great furniture and old/antique pieces to utilize at your party. They are open to anything as long as it works and don't really restrict you at all. The space is yours to make your own any way you would like. We decided to go with an outside caterer who was amazing (message me for details) and delivered 110% of what they said. My best recommendation for having a wedding here would be 2 things. 1. Make sure you have a party planner that will be in charge of organizing everything the night of because if not it can get a little out of hand. 2. Spend your money on a photographer (photo pink was ours and they are awesome) because the setting is priceless and the pictures are really awesome.
