No signs that say you can't take photos but got slapped on the hand for it!

Awsome bookstore with great books of art, however, with the rude woman that works here, it's a turn off coming here. I received the evil eye with the eyeglasses nodded down and a harsh warning from the woman who works here not to take photos of book covers. Anyways, even with her watchful eye, I was able to sneak one in. No signs, no posted rules. I did buy some Obey (Shepard Fairey) items that are harder to find, but would of bought more if someone was just a little nicer. MOCA bookstore lady (who had her application rejected for the museum position) this photo is dedicated to you. Plus, you get to be on my "rude places list". Congratulations!

Save MOCA & buy a cupcake! Bake sale 12-16-08.

MOCA is currently teetering on the brink of financial ruin. Their investment portfolio took a significant hit (no surprises here), they've exhausted their budget and donor revenues have deteriorated. They temporarily closed the Geffen Contemporary (where the Murakami exhibit was) in an attempt to cut operating costs, and their endowment has allegedly dwindled down from $40M to $7M. Rumor has it that board was looking to sell off some of the collection in an effort to keep the museum afloat. So how do you save a world renowned contemporary art museum from the threat of eminent financial peril? You have a bake sale of course! And that's just what a group of industrious, concerned supporters decided to do today in front of the museum. Complete with cupcakes, pies, cakes and cookies, they were selling all items for $1.00. Gold bar financiers were going for a paltry $1million! Chump change. Where's Eli Broad and his $30mil bailout? I opted to pledge my support to the MOCA store. Here they have an incredible collection of books, magazines, cards, and gift items. For a unique gift, I suggest coming here, it's great for the holidays! I fell in love with some hand blown bud vases and picked up a few for my staff. Eli Broad recently gave an interview about the importance of MOCA, Art and its ability to transport us from the harsh realities of the current economy. I think Broad is onto something here. I really wish he would step in with an investment while cleaning house in the board of trustees. It would be a shame to let this flagship cultural institution slip into obscurity. L.A.'s burgeoning Art scene simply cannot afford this kind of blow.

Cute store. Fabulous book selection. Quirky souvenirs and gifts. Practical art tools. Journals, postcards, pens, watches and mugs. Customer service = non-existent. I mean there were workers in there, but who were they? Maybe they blended in with shoppers. I wanted to buy a memento, but I didn't want a coffee mug or some colored pencils. I was looking for something that had MOCA engraved or stamped on it, but there wasn't anything. Did I miss it? I don't know. It was kind of hot in there, so I didn't want to linger too long. The shelves and tables are adorned with colorful and vibrant objects. It's just too bad (that during my in-store visit) they didn't have associates spritzing the store with lively guest service to match their general merchandise. Had that element been present, I would have spent my money here.

Stopped in here after we saw the museum. Got 2 cards and a postcard. They have a little bit of everything for all ages. Some items are really expensive and the postcards were $1. They have dishes, jewelry, clothing , toys, books, and little knick knacks. Good store for gifts.

Second of all, it is in LA- the heart of it (but not fully the "heart") and I had no idea the Coliseum, LAFC stadium and USC are all Nextdoor!! Which, so awesome but wow be prepared for parking, people and events. And woweee did we have "events" happen during our visit....thanks to the museum's super safe safety protocols, we got sheltered in place for hours. I mean HOURS due to populations outside that were unpredictable, which unfortunately is pretty pervasive in LA. Surprisingly? The PA system or announcement method in the museum was not great. My friend and I had to really strain and get under a speaker to even hear we were locked in. That is concerning. What wasn't concerning however, was the response. We mentioned to a museum worker how we had been there since opening and were concerned. He immediately ushered us into a the members/donors spot that had snacks and refreshments, and a spot to collect ourselves. Everyone seemed calm and the whole operation was finally clearly communicated and all was well. The museums response after was admirable as they situated our tickets and charges for special exhibits after the chaos of the day. The customer service is very impressive. Please visit! One of my favorite things to do is bring a picnic and relax outside in the beautiful open area in front of the museum. Sometimes we'll even take a walk over to the Rose Garden afterward, which makes for a perfect day out. Whether you're visiting with children or just looking for a great museum experience, I highly recommend the Natural History Museum. It's a place we never get tired of visiting!

I thought it was a timed entry but it is not...or it wasn't when we went. I followed the parking sign on the wall which led me to a lot just a little north of the museum. It was $20 to park there. Had I had more time to plan, I may have parked somewhere else as I felt that was a bit steep. I'm assuming metered parking would be hard to find in that location as it is in the heart of Hollywood. I thought it would be similar to the Museum of Illusions in New York, but rather than a museum feel, this was purely just photo ops. You can rent tripods at the front for $10. They also provide free lockers for your bags and stuff- which I would highly recommend. I didn't take up the offer in the beginning but soon realized that was a better option. I would also like to highly recommend and thank Tim! He showed us the ropes of how to take photos and he took some photos for us. He was friendly, professional and patient with my two young kids. He definitely knows his way around an iPhone camera and showed me some tricks I didn't even know. Tim's photos came out a lot better than mine as you need to find the perfect angle for the pictures to have that illusion effect. The tickets I purchased online also allowed us to go to the giant house next door and the upside down house. Tim came to the rescue again and took some amazing photos for us in the upside down house. It was a fun experience for all of us and I would definitely recommend visiting this location. If you see Tim, ask him for some pointers! Thank you, Tim!

There are several photo-friendly illusion setups that make for some cool and creative shots. We bought the bundle deal and also visited the Upside Down House and the Giant House. While those were interesting to see, there still wasn't much to do at either location besides taking pictures. One thing I really appreciated was the front cashier--He was very nice and welcoming, which made the check-in experience pleasant. However, I don't think the visit was quite worth the price. It felt a bit too expensive for what it offers, especially considering the bundle included all three exhibits. The experiences are fun for photos, but they're fairly short and limited in activities. For the amount you pay, it would be nice if there were more interactive things to do or more areas to explore. Overall, it's a good spot if you're really into taking fun illusion photos, but if you're expecting a longer or more activity-filled experience, it may feel a bit overpriced.

[Admission]: Free admission, but a timed-entry reservation is required via the website. [Parking]: Parking = $25 per car or motorcycle and $15 after 3 PM. For evening events after 6 PM, parking = $10. On Saturdays after 6 PM, parking is free; however during the 2026 FIFA World Cup watch party from 06/11/2026 to 07/19/2026, parking is free after 5 PM. [Tram ride]: Once parked, visitors will go through a bag check and basic security screening. Then visitors hop onto the tram and I recommend either standing or sitting on the side facing the 405 Freeway to enjoy the majestic views. [What to see - outdoor]: The gardens are a must-see at the Getty Center. The three main gardens to visit are Central Garden, Sculpture Garden, and Cactus Garden. Many visitors bring picnic setups and relax at the lawn next to the Central Garden and the terrace outside of the Garden Terrace Café. Some visitors even bring art supplies to sketch the beautiful surrounding areas. [What to see - indoor]: The center is divided into 4 pavilions and 1 library: * North Pavilion (Medieval and Renaissance sculpture and decorative arts) * East Pavilion (Sculpture and Italian decorative arts from 1600 to 1800) * South Pavilion (French decorative arts from 1600 to 1800) * West Pavilion (Sculpture and decorative arts of the 1700s and 1800s along with 19th-century paintings). * Getty Library (one of the world's most comprehensive art historical research libraries - only opens on Monday to Friday) Our party was able to browse the West Pavilion and this is where visitors will find some of the most famous artists in history from Vincent van Gogh (Irises), Claude Monet (The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light), Edvard Munch - the one who painted The Scream (Starry Night), and Joseph Mallord William Turner (Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino). Other notable paintings like Spring (Jeanne Demarsy) by Édouard Manet and Rembrandt Laughing by Rembrandt van Rijn were not on display as of June 2026. Each pavilion has its own gift shop on every floor that reflects the exhibits on the floor so it is definitely worth stopping by each shop. The West Pavilion is connected to the South Pavilion, and our party also had a chance to browse the art collection in the South Pavilion. [Guided tour]: The museum offers free English-language tours of selected artworks in the permanent collection galleries. For example, the Getty Center offers a 45-minute Center Art, Architecture, and Garden Tour at 11 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, and 2 PM. Be sure to confirm which tours are running on the day of your visit at the Information Desk in the Museum Entrance Hall. Check the website for additional tour options and schedules. [Conclusion]: This is one of the best tourist attractions in Los Angeles with free admission (you only pay for parking & free parking after certain time), the Instagrammable Central Garden, a huge collection of historical artwork, and breathtaking panoramic views of Los Angeles at the Cactus Garden. For a bare minimum visit, plan on spending about 2 hours (not including the time spent waiting for the round-trip tram rides which could add 15+ minutes of wait time per ride depending on the crowd) to see the Central Garden and the West Pavilion. If you want a proper chance to experience everything the center has to offer, then plan approximately 4+ hours.

Word is that they will redo some of the layout, install a new AC system, new floors, and new trams and more. The Getty Center is worth planning a day to tour for visitors and LA residents alike. It's peaceful very nicely, decorated and full of historical art. I can't wait to visit again once the renovations are done.
