My husband especially loved this place. It reminded him of Mexican restaurants he grew up with in Tucson. His chimichangas were crispy. The green chili was like a soup with chunks of chilis, tomatoes, and pork. And he loved my serving of refried beans. He stole some! For me, it was mixed. The Chili Relleno was buried in dough. The chili itself was mush, and very little cheese. I prefer a lighter treatment of flour and egg and a firmer chili. I wondered if it came out of a can. Family owned, in business for 50+ years, and putting in the work day in and day out to serve locals. I was the youngest one in here by a long shot. Surprised to see they have a full bar! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner but I was craving a sloppy and smothered breakfast burrito. Wasn't expecting complimentary chips and salsa, so that was another pleasant surprise! My burrito was delivered to my table within a few minutes of ordering. I felt like I checked my phone for half a second and all of a sudden the waitress was in my face with a giant burrito...hey it could be worse! OLE BURRITO ($12) // Two eggs scrambled with hash browns with ground beef, wrapped in a tortilla smothered in green chili and cheese. This thing was a monster and I couldn't shovel it down fast enough. They put enough green chili on this thing to last me several lifetimes, but I'm certainly not complaining. First and LAST time coming here I came with my family and my auntie was eating rice with her chimichangas and it was crunchy asf... :/ Then my grandma had the same plate but she bit down on a toothpick that was INSIDE of her chimichanga. Today .. I ordered a steak Chimichanga delux with everything.. I got about halfway through it when the bite I took .. felt like a sharp bone in my mouth.. I pulled it out and it was a toothpick.. when I let them know and showed them the toothpick that I could of choked on.. the cook explained they use tooth picks to keep the chimichanga in place while cooking but failed to pull it out obviously. Close But No Cigar! Went on a Saturday for lunch. Very clean restaurant, very nice staff. Menu is very limited. As others have stated, the green chili for the entrees is incredibly soupy. Best served with a spoon. Overall all three meals were bland. Salsa is odd, not horrible, but odd. Something appears to be missing. Midway through the meal, a couple of regular customers brought in a chihuahua and sat down in a booth inside, placing the dog on the bench seat for the meal. Clearly not a service animal. Monterrey House is one of my wife and I favorite places to have some of the best Mexican food. Service is very kind and they are on their game. The restaurant is spotless as it has always been. They have been around for about 75 years. They have been in Arvada since 1995. They have never changed the food. For a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, I was very impressed with Monterrey's. This was my first time here. It's nothing special on the inside but The service was great and the food was yummy! They made us fresh margaritas that were huge! The guacamole was delicious and the salsa was good ( too spicy for my preference but my friend loved it). I ordered 3 tacos and they were great. Decided to give it a go despite some mediocre reviews. Glad we did. Very satisfied with our food. This is a Covid-19 to go order, which is always a little different than dining in. There were positives and negatives, so here we go. Positives: Clean environment with very friendly staff. That's a great start! Maybe number one for any Mexican restaurant in my world, awesome salsa. The salsa did not disappoint. Great flavor. Nice consistency and very fresh. Even a little heat now and then if you get the right bite of pepper. Queso was delicious too. The tostada aspect was new for me and seemed unnecessary, but still delicious. Chile Verde had great flavor, with big chunks of pork, onions and green chillies. Chicken enchiladas? I mean, it's chicken enchiladas... Really just depends on the sauce, which was the aforementioned Chile Verde. So there you go. Negatives: Chile Rellenos had nice thick peppers, but an equally thick breading which was a little too much for us. Hmmm... Maybe that's it for the negatives. I guess that should be singular. I've tried it twice. Once in the old building and once in the new. Unfortunately it didn't get any better. I really wish it was good as it's so close. But it may be the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The green chili had no flavor at all. Tastes like flour water. The cheese was ice cold and not melted. I was in need of a relleno and this place got good reviews so decided to give it a chance. Well, that was an unfortunate decision. The food was mediocre-- way too much salt, not much flavor. Rellenos were chewy and tasteless, beans were mushy (but at least didn't taste too porky), and the rice only read as SALT. The only redeeming part of the family's meals was that the tamale was "not bad". My family has been eating at the Monterrey House since the early 1980s. I was therefore raised on this food. I loved it from an early age, and I can honestly say that I developed my love for spicy food by eating here every other week or so with my parents and my grandparents. I have many wonderful memories of eating at the Monterrey House with my family, and I hope to make many more. Many years ago, the original family that owned and operated the Monterrey House decided to leave the restaurant business, and they sold the restaurant to a new family. I will admit that we were terrified that the food would change for the worse. However, the new family knew that changing anything would be a disaster, so they left it all the same. Nothing changed. Absolutely nothing. It was a gift from above. Now that you know my history with this place, you're probably thinking that I'm just biased in favor of their food because of my family's love of it. You would be wrong. This place has some seriously legitimate and delicious cuisine. It's authentic, and the menu is simple. My personal favorite: the classic smothered burrito. The green chile with pork is to DIE for. The pork falls apart upon contact with your fork. You feel the spice, and it's warm and wonderful. What more could you ask for? Also, I love the chile con queso (served tostada-style with hot peppers and melty cheese). I have never been anywhere else that serves it the way they do, and trust me, it is unique, spicy, and freakin' delicious. The prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. You can get a giant meal for under $10 (and I'm talking GIANT). The restaurant's interior needs a little updating, but that's not why you go there, and that's not why there is always a steady stream of people eating at this quaint place in the quiet town of Arvada. Don't listen to Justin R's review. He obviously didn't eat at the Monterrey House, and, if he did, he quite literally got it all wrong. Trust me on this one. Try it for yourself. A number of Yelpers have commented on their fondness for the Monterrey House through many years and a succession of locations, and I would say ditto for me. I don't know if the location on West 20th in Edgewater was their first, but that was their first for me. And our visit this week was our first at the current Arvada location. It's kind of obscure, but not difficult to find. And, it's nice - quiet in its off the beaten path obscurity. There is easy access, ample parking, plenty of seating, the dining room is bright and clean and the furnishings are in good repair. Seems small, but it's really not - the menus are laminated and spotless. I admit that I have unintentionally dribbled my share of salsa on menus at a Mexican restaurant, and a business attentive to that small but important level of detail - wiping off the menus before they're used again - says a lot. Service is polite and gracious. Food is Tex-Mex and very basic - tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, chile, guacamole, beans and rice - not the wide array of "specials" and seafood you find at many Mexican restaurants. But "basic" is not a criticism - the Monterrey House's mantra seems to be "be what you are and do what you do, and be it and do it very well." And, they do. I had the Fiesta Dinner (Cheese Enchilada, Tamale with Chile con Carne, Beans and Rice, Beef Taco, Tortilla, Guacamole Salad) - $11.25 - large portions and an especially generous serving of guacamole. My wife enjoyed the salad plate (Chile con Queso, Guacamole Salad, Beef Taco, Chalupa) - $8.75. The green chile is delicious - not hot and served with several large (inch and a half square) cubes of pork. The Guacamole Salad and Chile con Queso received especially high marks from those in our party. It has been too long - I should have rekindled my relationship with Monterrey House before now.
