We stopped in for lunch with a friend and it was pretty busy but there was a table for us upstairs. This place is located across the road from Hampton Court. After several hours touring the great palace that King Henry VIII loved, we were tired & well very hungry as it was a little past lunch time. I spied this place so we crossed the very busy road & walked in to a VERY busy pub/restaurant. Upon entering we were greeted warmly. The lovely gentleman checked the 2nd floor to see if there was a table & yay, there was! We made our way up the iron spiral staircase that is in the middle of the room to the second floor. For those who don't do steep spiral steps, there is a proper staircase toward the back on the right hand side. We got a table for two by a window, nicely private for this busy place. This place has a very extensive wine list with a nice selection of by the glass. Because I like bubbles I ordered a glass of Castelnau Champagne while H ordered a pint of ale (also great selection). This place has a full bar, both up & downstairs so if you'd rather a G&T they have it. There were several large groups sitting next to us so we got a gander of several mouth watering plates as they were being served. I ordered the fish & chips and H ordered the steak burger. We had a great time people watching, which is easy when you have a corner table. Our meals were served after a brief wait & oh my, the fish & chips were devine. It amazes me that something deep fried can be so greaseless. Huge portion of cod dipped in a beer batter was crunchy, the fish hot & flaky. The chips were super crispy on the outside (considering their size, perhaps double fried?) with a tender, fully cooked inside. How can something so simple be so delicious? H's burger was huge & he enjoyed every bite. I got to try it & while good the beef in the UK doesn't compare to Texas beef. Service was friendly, quick & efficient. Very friendly gastro pub experience- the food is a mix of modern British and some other "international " stuff. The staff lend a professional but casual air- book upstairs if you want a slightly more formal experience, stay downstairs if you're after more "pub" . Food was good with one or two missed beats - squid with aioli was a perfect starter, whereas the smoked salmon with assorted gels was very bland. Hake made for a great main. Bottom floor is more pub scene and upstairs is a bit more formal and typically needs reservations. We lucked out on timing and got upstairs. Indoor and outdoor seating, dogs can come too, so vast opportunities for dog watching, wonderful and friendly service, (they actually seem to LIKE Americans!) and just the best food. I got the roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding, and my companions got the nut loaf- excellent, the bangers and mash - excellent and a pot pie with chicken - excellent. This was simply awful from beginning to end. Service is very slow. Our waitress never served our drinks to us until our meals came out from someone else. The meals were awful. We had fish and chips. This was one of the best pubs I've been to in the London area. The food was traditional if you wanted that but with lots of ethnic options as well. The food was to die for, the drinks very good, and the dessert good as well. If I were here for more than a week I'd come back in a heartbeat. It's across the street from Hampton Court Palace, but filled with what seem like locals. It's not a quick meal, but worth the (not very long) wait. read more

Beautiful restaurant, painfully slow service...they stated a :50 minute wait time for food was acceptable. We had to set our own table and constantly asked for refills and orders appetizers while we waited for entrees. There seemed to be adequate staff just no desire to attend to the customers. We stopped here after Hampton Court Palace tour and was expecting standard pub fare but this was beyond our expectations! We both had the Chicken Supreme and although it took a little while to be served it was worth the wait. Elegant plating with a wonderful cut of perfectly cooked chicken surrounded by a nicely balanced, flavorful (not too salty!) sauce. Great place, great food, friendly staff. We were lucky to have the Mute Swan be the first pub we visited in England. Literally a hop and a skip across the street from The Hampton Court, we stopped by here to fortify ourselves before heading to the palace. The pub itself is very lovely. Clean, welcoming, with a pretty interior. We dined on the ground floor by the bar with a view of the wide windows and spiral staircase (there is a second floor with more tables). The bartenders were very friendly and patient with us clueless tourists. They gave us our drinks at the bar (I got a cider he got a beer), a menu, and we took our seats. Someone came in good time to take our orders and we got our food pretty quickly. They have a pretty substantial wine menu but we were excited to get a pint. We wanted something light so we shared the Chicken liver pate with spiced apricot chutney and buttered toast (£6.95 very creamy) and the Roast pepper, cream cheese and basil sandwich with tomato hummus, olives and artichokes (£5.95, light and flavorful, sandwiches available til 5p). Overall we were thoroughly pleased with the pub. I especially recommend this place to those visiting Hampton Court for it's close proximity to the site as well as the good food, drinks, and service the Mute Swan offers. read more

Tis was the first time we visited The Mute Swan for a meal and we were very happy we did! The atmosphere was pleasant, busy but not heaving. we opted to start with the charcuterie.... and OMG it was one of the best charcuterie we have had. The platter was more than enough for the two of us and the selection on the platter was fantastic, chorizo,salami and pork loin accompanied by a rather pleasant spicy humous. The only thing that let it down was the slices of toast....we would have preferred sour dough to the Hovis white. The honey baked ham and eggs was great the hame was perfection and the chips that accompanied the dish were brilliantly cooked, fluffy in the inside and crispy on the outside! The mute swan does not lack staff, they are all very pleasant and polite, however their level of customer service is lacking. You almost get to the point of waving a flag to try get someone to the table to take your order. Over all the Mute swan is great! read more

We chose to eat here after our visit to Hampton Court because it got such high ratings and were not disappointed. Since it is directly across the street we expected it to be crowded but there was plenty of seating left. The upstairs is fancier and you need a reservation. We sat in the pub downstairs. The food was delicious and presented quite beautifully and the service was great. At least three different staff members stopped by to ask if we needed anything. My husband loved his chicken and ham hock pie so much we came back again on our last night (a 45 min drive from our hotel)! read more

The fish and chips are absolutely the best we've ever had. The service is mediocre, at least our waiter was, absolutely no personality. However, the food more than made up for his lack of charm. The fish was so flavourful and crispy and had a perfect ratio of fish to batter which sadly most chefs don't master. Well done! read more

Came to London and had lunch at this restaurant directly across from the Hampton Court Palace. We had a party of four and called 15 minutes before we arrived at the restaurant. The upstairs portion of the restaurant you order at you table, the downstairs pub area, you order at the bar. We had a different selection for each of us. I had the fish and chips which was very tasty. My wife had the rump roast sandwich which she liked also. The other people in our party had the sausages and what looked liked a chicken pot pie. We all enjoyed our meals and the beer drafts as well as the the atmosphere. Great meal, great service, good drink. read more

I work in the area and had a group dinner with colleagues and my boss at the Mute Swan. The layout of the restaurant is smart, on the ground floor is the pub area for after work gatherings while upstairs on 2nd or 3rd floor is a formal dining room. The wait staff and service was incredibly attentive. I was not blown away by the food. I think the menu was a bit too selective and I would appreciate items that might be done more eloquently but that are still traditional. Instead it was venison, ox cheeks with bone marrow, and Brixham brill, which frankly I still do not even know what that is. I ordered the vegetable salad as a starter which was really lovely. Beetroot with a a variety of other mixed legumes and aubergine as well as rocket and cream bullets that smoothed it all over. My main course was more disappointing. I ordered the duck which was magret style, however mine was outright still bleeding when served to me. Cooking a magret to perfection means it should be pink to red, but certainly not just butchered. Presentation of the plates was spectacular however and again nice ambiance. Not sure I would patron this establishment on my own and may also persuade our firm to go elsewhere if the opportunity presents itself again. read more

Called in for lunch after a tour of Hampton Court. Great pub, excellent food, spotlessly clean and the best staff that we have encountered during our 7 week stay in the UK. Shame that we are not in the area longer or we would definitely eat here again. Casual dining outside or in the bar, and a really smart dining room upstairs. Highly recomended.
