2017-10-22. The New Rink. Shelby Twp. Mi. The Midway Arcade. Redeem your tickets for prizes.
    G I N.

2017-10-22. The New Rink is located in Shelby Twp, MI. It has it's own parking lot with literally hundreds of parking spaces. Last known as Maxx Play, the 90K sq. ft. facility was also the former home for a plethora of businesses that failed the test of time. From bounce castles, to paintball, to Whirlyball before it. The place was shut down in 2009's and it sat empty for a couple of years. In 2011, the new owners refurbished and renovated, and reopened as The New Rink Roller Sports Complex. Some of the original decor remained, the original entrance, the wood floor skating area, and those globe chandeliers. And with the vast space, they were able to maintain most of the original businesses. In addition to the rink, A separate section with bounce houses remained, as well as a separate section for an arcade. There was also a closed off section I wasn't quite able to see, but it looked like another rink (Roller Hockey? Private party?). And, of course, facilities for parties, complete with a snack bar. Lastly, there is a pro shop to cover all sorts of repairs and carries items for you to purchase. But the reason why I'm writing about this place is simply because it exists. With a bowling alley up the street, two trampoline parks and a rock climbing gym nearby, and a laser tag facility down the street, this rink rounds out activities nicely for the area. During the summer, they have admission specials and skate programs to help occupy our kids and getting in some physical activity to boot! 4 stars overall. For those of you wondering, I think the Paint Ball business is still there. I didn't see an entrance from the inside, so I'm assuming it's only accessible from the plaza. If you would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company.

Family fun at the new Rink!

They really want to charge me 10$ to watch my kids roller skate? That's embarrassing and they will lose my business.

I was on a limited time crunch today, so I stuck mostly to the main, paved trails (happily many sections of this path still ran through the woods); but there are hiking and/or biking trails branching off in many directions all throughout the property. Make sure to watch the trail signs, as some are for bikers only. River Bends is also a dog friendly park, note that they must remain on a maximum of a 6ft leash at all times. While I visited today with only my pupperoni, River Bends park is great for kids of all ages. There are a multitude of play areas for children, great to help wear out their energy. There is also a disc golf course that winds throughout the park, supplying players with beautiful nature views. You could also enjoy a BBQ on one of their charcoal grills, relax at a picnic table, or pavilions if you have a large group; nature watch on a nearby bench, our even try out a game of horseshoe. The park appeared well maintained, for the most part; although a few signs could use some repair. They have restroom facilities, and port-a-pottys available for use (although I did not enter them to speak of their cleanliness). You can find trash receptacles around every bend, so there's no excuse for lazy littering, and there is a main sign available showing you all of the trails and their difficulties. You can find this sign posted off to the side of the parking lot; which itself, had plenty of available spots. Definitely a favorite park to stop and enjoy, highly recommend.

I've been coming here for years to skate and I don't expect people to get on their hands and knees scrubbing the boards and floor, but some damage needs to be addressed. -Seam covers for the bottom of the boards are falling off (pucks can go underneath) -Netting around the boards is falling off (pucks hit it and fall out) -random bumps and buckles on the floor (dangerous to skate on) -debris, garbage, animal poop on the floor A lot of the above would be solved if the floor wasn't open to the elements when the park is closed. Even a brief status-check of the rinks when the park opens and closes would be helpful.

All my photos show they have 2 outdoor roller rinks for hockey or for roller blading. Must read the two signs of rules and regulations. A few baseball diamonds. I'm sure they're active in the evening or on the weekends because there was real no activity here today. Soccer fields when soccer season is in. I took pictures of a picnic area and playscape for kids. Maybe for daycare groups or for families that stay at home with their kids to come and play. A few picnic tables to sit at and have lunch or snack. There are Restrooms attached by office, along with beverage vending machines. There's quite a bit of parking space. This is the park that displays fireworks in the month of June or before the 4th of July holiday. All in all there's a walkway going around through the park or sidewalk area with 2 entrances. It's worth a stop if you're in the area or driving back from Rochester and your resident of Shelby or Macomb making your way back home. If you ARE a resident ... you know this park and what I'm talking about! :)

I first started going to this park back when Pokemon Go came out all those years ago. I had no idea what this park was all about until that first day I was playing Pokemon Go and just kept following the path on the game's map and then suddenly I looked up and realized I had walked through all of the park and into downtown...all a stone's throw away from my apartment! That started my long-term love affair with this park. I have so many fond memories in here catching Pokemon, but also coming back here with friends and with my dog for walks, playing on the play structures, glancing at the tennis courts and wondering if I should play a bit, hammocking because there are so many great hammocking trees scattered throughout the park, for ARTS & APPLES, ones of the greatest festivals in metro Detroit, and so much more. This park has something for everyone and is also very accessible right off of Paint Creek Trail as well. Parking around here can be interesting, but now that I no longer live at the apartments directly across the street from this park, I find that parking at the Rochester Library in downtown is my favorite option. There is a path that leads all the way behind the library, along the creek, to Paint Creek Trail, with an offshoot to the Rochester Municipal Park! This is truly a wonderful park, for fun with your friends, family, and furry ones, in all four Michigan seasons, and I'll never stop enjoying it! :)
