The theater itself is quite nice. Rather olde timey but pleasant. The Staff there are very nice. But they do push folks to leave ASAP after the show is over. Note that the restroom facilities are sparse; only one for each gender and they are small. I will not sit in the balcony there again. I don't know if it was just my row, but every time the person next to me moved (including swaying with the music) the entire row shifted. Perhaps the seats are not properly connected to the floor? The seat itself was at an odd angle, it didn't move all the way down to a flat position. The audio there is good. There was very little 'boominess' like one finds in bigger venues. The band appeared comfortable and relaxed. And that's always a plus for a better performance. Renaissance are always spectacular! I shall miss them dearly. read more

The Newton Theater is one of the best music venues in Northern NJ. They book some big name international acts as well more local and cover bands. Parking on the street is no problem in the evening, and there are a couple of good restaurants down the block, notably The Farmer's Daughter. The theater seats about 600 people, so there's some intimacy with the performers. Sightlines to the stage are only fair, as the seats are not staggered, and I usually have a tall person sitting in front of me, but the seats are comfortable. Most importantly, the sound system is excellent and the mixing board guy does a good job. I saw Graham Parker & The Rumour on a reunion tour here several years ago, and, last year, The Rascals, and last night, bluegrass legend Del McCoury. All great shows. Del McCoury played with Bill Monroe and many other famous country musicians. He tours constantly, and also has a residency at the Grand Old Opry. He led his high energy band for almost two hours. His singing is strong, and he can still hit the high notes. He's 85 years old, what an inspiration. read more

With only a few hours' notice, I ended up in the Newton Theatre on Saturday night for Thunder Down Under, an odd two hours of Australian pubic bones and pelvic thrusts that really deserves a separate review. My companions were mostly Sussex County natives from the Newton area, so leading up to this performance I got to hear a bit of the more near-term history of the venue, including the fact that it used to be a movie theater (one of my chums saw Antz here in 1998). It was pretty clear immediately that this place has some history - the lobby and theater area itself have a lot of cool features, with some edgy wainscoting, etc. I'm by no means an expert on interior design (it took me five minutes of very sad Googling to even come up with wainscoting), but it seemed like the lobby had more of the historic features preserved; would definitely be curious to know how far off that observation is. All of the employees I interacted with were very nice. The woman by the entrance who looked at my ticket was jovial/pleasant, and there were quite a few others stationed throughout the theater available to assist. Towards the back of the lobby, you could purchase some movie theater-esque snacks, as well as a boozy accompaniment. I have a rule about not drinking White Claws in non-beach settings, so I didn't take advantage of that. I would have preferred a full bar, but it IS basically a movie theater at the end of the day so I'm willing to acknowledge that was more in the realm of a pipe dream/me being ridiculously high maintenance than anything else. My biggest issue with the theater was the seating - I just didn't find it comfortable at all. Originally I ended up right on the aisle, but once I made it clear that I didn't want my face to make direct contact with an Aussie crotch, I switched with a chum and ended up four or five seats in. I didn't realize until that happened how much I'd been relying on the aisle to stretch out because it was super, super cramped. If you slouched at all, your knees immediately came into contact with the seat in front of you. It was like being in steerage. I'm 5'7, which makes me slightly statuesque but I'm certainly not an Amazon - if I'm uncomfortable, I can't imagine how a 6-footer handles it. That, I'm sure, is an enormous expense/undertaking, but I'd be reluctant to come back here unless the seating was updated. I know a lot of movie theaters in the past few years have gone all-in with literal leather recliners, which I'm not suggesting - but spreading out the rows so there's at least a little leg room would go a long way. I'm not an expert on sound systems, but this one seemed to be perfectly fine. If you don't notice that the volume is too high or low, or that the overall quality isn't up to snuff, I chalk that up as a win. At one point, a chum showed me her phone, which had some kind of warning about the decibel level in the theater, but I didn't think it was insanely loud. It may have depended on your seating though - we were in the very last row of the orchestra seats I think, so that might have been one of the perks. I love some old school charm, and the Newton Theater has it. However, a nod to some modern amenities would benefit their customers' experiences and make them more competitive with other small boutique theaters in the tristate area. read more

Our third time visiting this theater. Last time we were here was some years back to see the Fixx perform. Tonight we came to see " Dirty Deeds, The AC/DC Experience ". This tribute band is probably as close as you can get to the real thing, two hours of pure adrenaline fist pumping music. The theater has a seating capacity of just over 600 and has a mezzanine along with the lower level left, center and right sections. They have a small bar area set up at the lobby. Wine, beer and hard seltzer's along with water and soft drinks. There's also a Merch table selling band tour t's and other paraphernalia. No outside drinks allowed in the theater. Street parking and there's a public parking down the street. read more

Ah the Newton theater. I have been going to this place since it was a movie theater with 2 different areas. Since then it has been renovated as a one big theater and it does look nice inside but you can see some parts of the ceiling are leaking or peeling. The only problem I think is the bathrooms, now that it's one big theater the bathrooms both for men and women only have 2 stalls each which is nothing for a theater that big, it created an extremely long line. Especially at a show that has all women. Aside from that the parking in the town is limited too we were able to find street parking because we went to dinner in town before. read more

To begin with the bathroom are small outdated and smell, in the seating area , paint chips from ceiling fall on you and it seems same rotation of bands every year. The bar and bathroom lines are ridiculously long. Seating area is cold in the winter . I remember them collecting money in the form of donations , they claimed were for bathroom remodeling. Wonder where that money went? No parking without walking from blocks away. Forbid from bringing a bottle of water in? Most of us are older as is there crowd there. Are they that greedy to make us throw water away at the door , so they can sell us one? This place used to be great, but like the building it has deteriorated and gotten worse through the years . Perhaps invest some of that money you're making back into the theatre! On the Plus side volunteers and security are polite and helpful. Other venues with better acts and parking in the area is a better choice. read more

Great small venue with not a bad seat in the house! They get some good acts here & I like how easy it is to park & walk around to grab dinner & drinks before the show. Beer, wine, & soda are served in the place & the prices are not too bad. One star off for the miserable bathrooms that only have 2 stalls where there is plenty of room in the bathroom area to have more than 2 tiny stalls. Last night's show at the Newton Theatre was amazing. The Ventures played. I've seen them a couple of times, and the Newton show was the best - the venue has terrific sound and the stage lighting and other visuals were solid. The theatre is in an older building with an old school marquee. Like the other establishments on Main Street in that area, the theatre is housed in an older building with an old school marquee. From the looks of it, I'd guess that the theatre was restored instead of renovated with perhaps some of the original molding and interiors. Like the seats were upholstered, but the rows were narrow like how they were decades ago. (Instead of just standing up when someone needed to reach a seat towards the middle of the row, people seated got up and walked out of the row for the people to reach their seats. It was tight.) The staff working the doors were friendly, telling people to enjoy the show. In the lobby, there is a concession stand. The restrooms are also in the lobby. If you aren't familiar with the area, I recommend getting there before sundown and finding a parking spot. There isn't a private parking lot; there is street parking along Spring Street. We don't often go to Sussex County and weren't familiar with Newton, so we missed the first song at the show because we had been looking for parking. (We ended up parking the car near this park at the corner of Spring and Main.) In short, the Newton Theatre is a wonderful place to see a show, and it was totally worth the trek to Sussex County to see The Ventures play. Would come back again! read more

I should've written this review 2+ years ago but better late than never. I went to see tons of live music (pre-pandemic); including at the Newton Theatre which is an hour drive from where I live. Back in 2020, I had an excellent single ticket for Jim Messina. And, then COVID hit. While other venues were quick to postpone shows (and offer refunds), the Newton was dragging their feet. Being immunocompromised, attending an indoor event like that during the height of the pandemic would've been extremely risky for me. I wrote and called - asking if they would kindly take my ticket back. They wouldn't budge, and I ended up selling my single 6th row dead center seat on line for a fraction of what I originally paid. The very next day, the Newton postpones the show. The booking at the venue is pretty decent, but the customer service sucks. As a result, I'll never buy a ticket nor set foot in that place ever again! read more

We love this theater. It is so wonderful having access to great music so close to home. The theater seats about 650 people so there is not a bad seat. There are a few areas that could use a facelift, but that is easily overlooked. We have enjoyed being able to see shows here. We have seen a lot of tribute bands and on occasion the performer themselves. I wish parking was easier and the town of Newton would open up more spaces after normal business hours. read more

I ordered tickets months before the Covid19 outbreak for the Stephen Marley concert and after several rescheduled concert dates it never happened. I've tried calling their 3rd party ticket sales office, they informed me that they had nothing to do with with returning my money and to call the theater directly. I've placed multiple calls to the box office, who then directed me to write an email to info@thenewtonthearte.com. Again no answer or money. I'm sure I'm not the only one who they ripped off, they are scoundrels. I would NEVER buy any tickets for this venue. And I don't feel sorry for their closure due to Covid19 for im sure they made out with plenty of PPP and state assistance money. Return the money you pocketed from individuals like myself. Me and my husband went to Newton many time and always enjoyed the shows. My hubby has passed on, I still go see the shows we enjoyed seeing. Still enjoy the shows but really miss my husband hooting with the audience, so now I try to do it but just not as good. Great local place to see great shows. Shame on you Newton theater! The Governor declared no venues over 250 seats, Broadway is closed, but you decide not to cancel your venue and put folks at risk! You need to do the right thing and refund those who were not able to attend, as recommended by their physicians and the CDC! Well, for starters, I ordered tickets well ahead of the show I wanted to see. Like 3 months. Ordering online was easy enough. Ticket prices were very reasonable. However.....I purposely and intentionally (like I always do) picked END/AISLE seats as I have extreme claustrophobia and anxiety attacks over being "closed in" at shows like this one. The Newton Theater's site showed what looked to be aisle seats as far as I could tell. I bought 3 hoping to be on the end seat on the aisle. Surprise! My end/aisle seat was against a wall with a row of people to my left. Freaking nightmare!!!! Staff didn't care though, and the snotty people in those seats acted like they were doing me and my guests a FAVOR by standing up off their asses to let us in! I tried! (BTW...even the LOUSIEST of their beer regular Yuengling was $7 a can! Really??? That's more than a 6 pack of the swill!). Anyway, I sat in panic attack mode against the wall, trapped by at least 8 "high-affluent" snotrags until the performer, David Bromberg, who I have been a huge fan of and supporting financially via concerts, recording sales, shirts, stickers and posters for about 40 years, started mouthing off about politics. I have never heard this from him before i n all of those years! He got truly ugly, and some people booed him, yet he promised them "more" if they were bothered by his grandstanding arrogance! Not sure of the Newton Theater's responsibility about their performers' permission to insult many customers, but I will say their ticket sales tactics are misleading, anxiety-provoking, disappointing and deceptive. I will NEVER EVER go there again. We walked out after 4 songs. Keep your PATRONS happy, NOT your hired help. ALSO! They sound system was REALLY BAD! read more

With an old looking marquee and an old looking brick building, the look of this theater is very deceiving. You could drive past this place a million times and not know how nice it is inside. I Went here with my uncle and cousin to see the band "From Good Homes", which is a Phish meets Dave Mathews Band local band. They put on a great show and the theater was very comfortable and accommodating. The lobby of this theater is very small, but very clean. There is two small bar/concession stands on each side of the lobby. The only strange part I found about the lobby was that it had a head shop raw incense smell to it. For the size of the place they could use larger restrooms. The men's room only one stall and two urinals, because of that during intermission thier was a huge line. The theater itself is very nice and it looks like it had been renovated not too long ago. The seats could use a little bit more leg room, but I think that it's the standard size seating. I would definitely come back again. read more

I want to start by saying that this theatre puts on great performances. My family and I have seen many shows here, including original acts, such as Rick Springfield, John Waite, Rik Emmett, The Bangles, and 10,000 Maniacs, as well as top notch tribute bands, like Bruce in the USA, Tusk, and Eaglemania, to name a few. However, the biggest complaint I have is with the business operations. I was trying to log in this morning, to buy tickets to a show. However, on the Newton Theatre website, I did not see a link to allow me to sign in, as a member, to purchase tickets online. While it wasn't especially intuitive before, I was always able to perform this transaction via my computer. The current iteration of their website is even less user friendly, for members. I also called the box office, which was during their posted operating hours, but no one answered the phone and I had to leave a message. Needless to say, I am very disappointed and am going to very carefully consider whether I purchase another membership next year. read more

I have attended many concerts at Newton Theatre and feel the sound quality is poor due to echoing of sounds bouncing off the walls. Feel some sound absorbing materials or tiles would help to eliminate the bounce. read more

I hate to use phrases like "gem" and "secret", but the new Newton Theatre really seems to be those things. Last minute I was able to get some tix for Blues Traveler here last Saturday night. I didn't have high expectations for the venue because I remembered it as the old twin cinema place with smoking in the balconies and Newton's finest hanging around when the movie let out. The folks who renovated this place did a phenomenal job! It's clean and well let in the lobby. The way they moved people in and out was really easy. They set up beer and wine concessions in the lobby, and it seemed to work. The concert hall is tiny, but the seats were all new and comfortable. Most had cup holders. I had heard people complain about the acoustics, but that's unwarranted in such a small space. They don't suck, and that's good enough for me. For about $60 we got to sit 12 rows from the band. The show itself was really good too - they played a full two hour set. I'm still a little amazed that this once a dump place is now nice and drawing good artists to play here. I'm looking forward to getting back here again soon. read more

If I could put negative stars for this venue I would. Went to see a band perform here and they were fantastic. The employees at the theater were the complete opposite. The general manager was nasty, spiteful, and outright disrespectful. Told my group and I we "caused problems" when all we were doing was sitting down and enjoying the music. Was not aware that was against the rules to sit in your assigned seat and sing along with the band. Will NEVER recommend/go to this location for a concert or show EVER AGAIN. read more

An old friend sent me a message a few months ago, " Southside Johnny is playing The Newton Theatre". I haven't seen SSJ since the nineties and, for that matter, my high school buddy. But Newton? There are concerts in Newton? I figured WTH, it's an affordable night out. The venue is a refurbished movie house in the downtown area of this northwestern Jersey town. With a capacity of about 600 there's not a bad seat in the place. The small lobby and cramped restrooms just add to the charm of seeing a concert in an early 20th century theater. I was pleasantly surprised they offered beer and wine on site. The staff was friendly and accommodating as we were directed to our seats in the first row of the balcony. The "balcony" is elevated only about 6-8 feet above the sloped orchestra but the sight lines are excellent. Acoustically the layout has everything needed but on this night the sound was a bit off. I suspect this had more to do with the tech team rather than the venue. SSJ even stopped the show at one point to ask them to get it right. It didn't dampen the night as Southside and the Jukes high-energy, rock and roll was the reason everyone left smiling. As with any venue in the Garden State, smoking is prohibited but that doesn't necessarily stop some from lighting up at many shows. I didn't see anybody sharing a J, but had they, it surely would've been overpowered by the stench of Ben-Gay this night. Southside and the Jukes may be a Shore-era stand-by but I was surprised there weren't a few younger music fans here for the two-and-a-half hour show. The Newton Theatre is an excellent option for a night out. The concert lineup is a bit grayer than most with the likes of Dave Mason, John Waite and Blue Oyster Cult all scheduled to appear soon. A name like "The Silver Fox Theater" may be more apropos but to their credit they have booked somewhat more contemporary acts such as the Gin Blossoms and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The town itself is not a bustling metropolis nor would anyone describe it as quaint. There are a few decent restaurants nearby and we enjoyed a pre-show bite and post-show drink at O'Reilly's Pub a short walk away. I will definitely continue to check the calendar would love to come back to see a band like The Gaslight Anthem here. Perhaps Johnny Lyon said it best himself. "Newton, New Jersey," the ageless rocker blurted at the end of the show, "Who knew?" read more
