Our first day in Halifax and wanted to eat at Edna's, but we have to wait. So we decided to wait it out at this coffee joint. The seating area is spacious, but there are signs to limit your stay to 60mins. The menu is easy to understand and standard pricing, although sizes are not specifically written. We ordered a cappuccino and a pumpkin spice latte (because I'm feeling basic Fall). The coffees arrive in 5mins. Fyi: Whole milk is used. Cappuccino: 5/5. Super dark and deep notes. Looks like an 6oz. Very strong. Pumpkin spice latte: 4/5. I don't know how any place can make a PSL not basic/standard. This place tried their best. Not overtly sweet. Looks like a 12oz. I recently made it to The Nook for the first time, as I was on the hunt for a new trivia night to attend. It had a few things going for it on paper, including an early start time of 7:30pm, and cool, close by location, so we made the move. Primarily a coffee shop, it isn't a huge space, sitting 30 odd people at an eclectic mix of seating options. There's the counter along the windows, regular little tables, a high top, a couch, and two booths with oddly low tables. Plants hanging along the window add a nice feeling to the place, while local art dots some of the wall space. On our first time at The Nook, we came a bit early and were able to snag a booth. As I mentioned above, the tables in them are at a bit of an awkward height so you're basically forced to lean back and stretch out if you're of any height. My shorter companions found it better than most tables, so I guess it's all about perspective. They've got a diverse menu here, with some fancied up sandwiches, including a commendable selection of all day breakfast options, as well as salads, shareable apps, and of course lots of tasty looking baked goods. Being in the north end, there's plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, as well as stuff for us old fashioned omnivores. And if you've got what it takes to win a round in trivia, you'll get a plate of sweets! I was feeling like something more substantial and less diabetes inducing, so I went with a recent addition to their menu, the "A Lot Going On" wrap. With chicken, bruschetta, goat cheese, red onion, spinach, maple curry dressing and guacamole, it certainly lived up to the name. They also have a commendable booze selection so I grabbed a bottle of Boxing Rock's Hunky Dory Ale and went back to my nook. My wrap was soon dropped off and I dug in to my late dinner. Despite the menagerie of flavours, everything worked really well together, with a balance of tangy, salty and sweet. It was a bit on the messy side, but that's what napkins are for. Trivia was a good time, with a well-balanced selection of questions, and we did well despite just being three. Wrapping up and getting home before 9pm is great for work nights! The Nook is a well-rounded cafe that takes things to the next level beyond your typical coffee joint. I love coffee and I love the NOOK! Have been meaning to write about this spot for a while, since I do go here at least twice a day. The North End has a few really good coffee spots and this is in my top 3. They have a great mix of good coffee, tasty food and they also are licensed. Sadly I have never gone there for a pint but it is reasonably priced based on the menu. They recently were sold to new owners that have kept everything that is great about the NOOK and added a few things to make it more of a destination. A cafe that does everything it intends to with perfection! Overview If you've read any of my reviews, you know it's rare I give a 5/5. The top reason for a 5/5 is when the place does what it clearly set out to do without compromise. Atmosphere Music is not too loud, it's relaxing and alternative. But if you're not a big fan of it, you barely recognize it's there. The tables and chairs are great, and the mood is very relaxing. It's the perfect size for what they want to do in this part of the city. Artwork is always unique and supports local artists. It's a bit on the hipster-side but without any stereotypical things that turn the word 'hipster' into a negative. Washrooms The mark of a good restaurant or cafe is how clean their washrooms are. It tells you how the kitchen will be. And the washrooms here are clean, comfortable and fit the vibe of the rest of the cafe. Many places miss this mark. It shocks me when I walk into a washroom that is just a regular old washroom and doesn't fit the design of the rest of the place. Staff Always friendly but not overly. You won't get an overly cheerful, what kind of medication are you on "HI HOW ARE YOU TODAY?!!" You get real people who are helpful, seem happy and work very efficiently. Food & Drink Great for the coffee or tea lovers. The food is something I always think of when I think of The Nook. It's great, priced more than fairly, and I agree with Jodi B.'s "try the nachos" note. WIFI Strong. And I've never been in here with it failing. I know coffee shop owners always battle with people who spend too much time on their laptops while all they ordered was a coffee. Somehow that doesn't happen here. I can't explain why. I mean I'm here for hours, but I'll buy food and other items. Conclusion The Nook found the secret recipe for success. They haven't overpriced themselves for local area residents and they are so appealing, you'll come from another part of town, and pass by dozens of other coffee shops to get here. read more

I thought this place was fantastic! The staff person was super inviting and helpful with suggestions. The atmosphere is stunning. Especially the furniture and the curtained rooms. They have quite the selection of refreshments and snacks. I actually don't even think I got to pursue them all. As soon as I saw they were serving laughing whale, I was sold! The bakery case had great options for all dietary needs. I opted for the peanut butter choco cookie and it was phenomenal. Super sweet, reminding me of my grandmothers recipe. When I asked if I could have a flavoured latte the server explained that they don't believe in artificial so they can do real flavours like a real shot if maple syrup or a real dose of vanilla. Sooo impressed. This is my kind of place!!! My friend got the blueberry basil lemonade and said it was amazing! I saw they had bread plates and cheeses also on the menu. The Nook is a cozy, classy little coffee shop that offers so much more than coffee. The atmosphere is lively and the decor is quaint and stylish. Their display case is filled with delicious look treats including lots of vegan options such as cheesecake, cookies and energy bars. They also have a menu, which I didn't got a full look at but it has many vegan options as well. I got the smoked tofu and an energy bar, both were simply delicious. They're really expensive ($8 for a bagel) but I assume that's because of the prime location. The seats are comfortable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the food is good. I like that I can get beer here. Great place to have a study group and have a healthy lunch. We couldn't find a seat when we came in, so we asked to share a booth with a man who was sitting alone. He was cool with it, and turns out he was a regular who was testing out a new sandwich that will be on the future menu. I think he said he owned the fitness place down the road. There is quite a bit of loyalty to this place in the community. read more

I already love this place. I work down the street, so I thought I would stop by for a morning break. It was pretty dead, but it gave me first choice of seating, so I headed to the plush leather couch. The barista -- who I think in the owner -- explained the whole menu to me in detail. I was curious about the cakes, some of which, he says are made by his Russian grandmother. The Napolean cake and Russian-style gingerbread look exactly like those made by my Soviet in-laws. I chose a sunflower butter, homemade power bar and a almond-flavoured tea. Both were delicious, but the $3 pricetag of the power bar was a little pricey. I especially like the tables which look they're made from typesetters' drawers. Lovely ambiance. Friendly service. Lots of G-F and vegan options. This is my new favourite hangout in Halifax. read more

Bought the bacon cheddar bagel and while $6.50 for a bagel is steep it was delicious. *Edit 03/07/2017*: After working around the area and going meatless I had to update my review. Thus far I've tried their nachos, smoked tofu and herbivore wrap. While their bagels were a bit pricey the other options have been worth every penny. The wrap has a tofu scramble that is quite egg-like and is wrapped in a delicious whole wheat wrap. The sprouts give it a nice crunch and even without a sauce it's very flavorful. It is somewhat small but is perfect for lunch or a bite on the go. The smoked tofu is very succulent and has a healthy drizzle of a sweet maple curry sauce it's also priced at a very fair $5. Last but certainly not least their nachos are a MUST. You can sub in vegan cheese for $2 or have the normal nacho cheese. They have a lovely sriracha infused oil they trickle over the corn chips that sport a healthy blend of spices. They're also topped with black beans, corn, green+red onions, delicious! Comes with sour cream and what I believe is handmade or at least top shelf salsa. Gotta say they've swayed me from my initial meal two years ago. Highly recommend this place if you're vegetarian or vegan A+++. read more

I need to give these guys an award! The food is great, the coffee, tea and even beer is a great break no matter what you are doing. I wrote nearly my entire dissertation while sitting at one of the tables through the Fall and Winter. They plied me with bacon sandwiches, cookies and tea/coffee. Welcoming me back each time, despite sitting for hours on end. Also the wi-fi is great. None of this 'please sign-in 5 times an hour, agree to our user agreements and force advertising on you' crap. This is a super cute little cafe and I'm so happy it opened up in my neighbourhood. It has a really nice layout, with several nooks, perfect for feeling like you're in a semi-privacy... but it still maintains a wide open feeling. The space has large windows so it lets in lots of light, which is always nice. They have a great selection of drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), snacks, and slightly larger plates. My friend and I each had tea and she had a granola bar while I had a toasted almond chocolate chip cookie. They were both delicious. The barista slightly forgot to make our drinks because it was somewhat busy, but once we asked about them, he immediately apologized and made them immediately. When he brought them over, he also brought over a granola bar and a hemp bar, and apologized again. The first apology would have been definitely adequate, but he went above and beyond, which demonstrates just how high the standards are here for quality of service.... and, in my opinion, is extremely important when a restaurant or cafe is just opening up and customers are coming in to "try it out" for the first time. read more

A great little spot. There is a variety of comfy seating, a lovely selection of sweet and savoury treats, and great coffee, plus beer and wine. Everything is definitely first class, and you'll pay for your snacks and drinks accordingly. That said, the owners are very pleasant and welcoming, and the service is excellent. I've been here twice with friends and it's a good spot to sit and visit, have a snack and a drink, and perhaps even knit a few rows. So far I've tried a cheese board - you get to choose 4 out of a variety of interesting fromage, plus customize the types of bread or crackers that come with it. I've also tried a 'rum baba' - a rum and sugar soaked bread dessert that was unusual and certainly satisfied my sweet tooth! I'll be back many times, and look forward to seeing how they adapt and evolve the menu and offerings along with the seasons. read more

The staff is super nice and very attentive. After I told her it was too strong for me she switched mine to a single shoot. Still rather strong almost on the bitter side too forward and pronounced a bit unpleasant for me. I like a balanced acidity and complexity without having one flavor too predominantly come forward, but that just me. I got the aged cheddar and organic strawberry jam on home made honey oat bread. Generous thick slice of aged cheddar, but the bread is not toasted and the cheese is not melted in the oven, very filling that is. This cafe is brilliant cause they devote a lot of effort in the details, source out the quality ingredients with home made bread. I like the pillow area semi private nooks, but they have bar style seating perfect for people watching, a sofa, comfy chairs and the traditional table and chair style if you're smart enough to grab one of their delicious sandwiches.. The service is really slow here. I ordered a burrito for lunch and people who arrived after me got their food first and I ended up waiting more than 20 minutes for my food. Not a good option when on a lunch break from work. The changes to the menu also aren't great. Not as many interesting options. Unfortunate that what was a great and cozy place has gone downhill. The Nook is about two blocks from where I live, and a few days ago when a friend was running late to meet me, I popped in there to keep warm and perhaps purchase a cookie. The atmosphere is lovely and quite inviting, a great space to get work done or sip a hot drink while reading. I purchased a chocolate chip cookie to have later when I got home from my dinner date that evening. Definitely the worst cookie I've ever had. Dry, weird, chalky texture, just disappointing. Maybe I got a sucky batch or they were older. Since I was only in there for a short period of time and didn't get to try some menu items, I will update this review in the near future, once I've had a chance to try the sandwiches I've heard great things about and some of their specialty drinks. read more

I was a little disappointed with this place for lunch on a sunny Tuesday in August. A friend and I stopped in and I basically had in mind what I would order before I got there, having looked at the menu online. He wasn't excited to try the place but agreed to anyway. We liked the cute atmosphere and took one of the 'nook' booths to the far right, which has a cozy feel. Bright, naturally lit cafe with a few scattered tables, bare light bulbs strung from the ceiling, chalk board menus, a few plants, dessert display case at the cash register. We weren't sure if there was table service here, so stood at the cash register and waited a few minutes before we saw any staff. The girl was friendly who did serve us, but it seemed unclear where the menus were (just to double check what we wanted to order). They are hung on clipboards at waist level of the counter, so we both didn't notice them. He ended up ordering the 'Double B - Roselane Farm double smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese & dijonnaise on nook honey oat bread' but on potato bread instead, which was verbally offered, and requested no tomato. I opted for what must have been their daily special sandwich, some turkey club on potato bread as well. I asked if these came with sides, and they do not, so I asked what sides are available. The server mentioned a carrot corn soup and some salad, so I chose the soup. Neither of us picked a fancy coffee or drink for some reason. We took our booth again and a few minutes later my soup arrived, which was quite flavorful, but thick like a puree. Another few minutes later my club arrived, and although it looked a bit small, it was pretty tasty. The server apologized that my friend's Double B was taking awhile and that the kitchen staff mistakenly put boiled egg on it and asked if he would mind that. He said no to that, so waited another few minutes for his sandwich to come. When it did, it had tomato on it afterall, and was also pretty small in portion size for someone who eats big. He said it tasted very good for what it was, but it was essentially bacon on under-toasted white bread, some greens and the sauce. The bill was $27 for these three items, which seems excessive considering he was still very hungry when we left. The server did provide a coupon for a free latte or sweet, which was nice, and my friend told me to keep because he didn't seem him returning here again. I would go back myself, albeit not necessarily for a meal, but just for caffeine and a dessert if by myself, like at any other cafe. Well, now with this coupon, I definitely will go back and give the place another chance. read more

The nachos here are amazingly delicious, substantial, well-priced and unique. They use a home-made spice blend which includes masala and smoked paprika and an oil with chili and lime. There is a great mix of toppings - corn, black beans, shredded cabbage, green onions and, of course, cheese. Oh, and the whole thing is finished with fresh cilantro. The 2 bucks extra for double smoked bacon reveals an indispensable piece de resistance. And voila! A plate of nachos, two friends in a nook with a glass of wine on a Friday after work... The nook is a fantastic addition to the burgeoning scene on Gottingen street. It's incredibly spacious and comfortable, a perfect place for meeting up with a few friends to study, drink, or get something to go because let's face it, the go-to cafes are getting a little tired. The owner is there a lot of the time and is incredibly helpful and informative. I haven't had the coffee but my friends are big fans of the laughing whale drip. The baked goods are amazing (even if some of them are gluten free) and I highly recommend them. I had the blueberry lychee cocktail and it was probably the best cocktail I've ever had -- friends had the rosemary fizzle and were equally as impressed.
