I have a lot to say about this place, so settle in for a long review. Breakfast Buffet : We love the breakfast buffet. Whether it's just the two of us or we have out-of-town guests, it consistently delivers on quality and variety. The coffee is always hot (and, I'm told, locally sourced). There are indulgent options as well as lighter, healthier choices, so there's something for every mood. We especially appreciate the freshness, cleanliness, and high quality of the food and the quick service means we can be in and out and ready for the day. Overall, the breakfast buffet is excellent value. Dinner : We've dined at the Nu Wray several times and each visit has been excellent. Service is consistently attentive and the food is wonderful. Over multiple visits we've tried many entrees; the roast with sides is our favorite. Portions are generous. They're often enough for leftovers to enjoy later. The dessert and wine selections are a treat. Lodging : We've had the pleasure of seeing several rooms at the Nu Wray and the adjoining Carriage House, each tastefully decorated, meticulously cleaned, and thoughtfully stocked with everything you need for a perfect stay. The inn's attention to detail is evident throughout, and the nods to its history are fascinating to explore. Don't miss the second‑floor balcony overlooking the town square, a gorgeous spot for morning coffee or a nightcap, with cocktails served by the skilled mixologists at the lobby bar. The whole place feels like a step back in time, beautifully and thoughtfully restored. Events : We hosted our twin baby shower at the Nu Wray Inn and are deeply grateful to James, Amanda, and their staff for making it unforgettable. From a personalized menu created just for us to hand‑crafted desserts made fresh by their exceptional baker, every detail was perfect. The food was outstanding, and the service went above and beyond. They took care of us and our guests the entire afternoon, allowing us to relax and enjoy the celebration. This was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime event that we will cherish forever; the beautiful setting, thoughtful touches, and flawless execution made memories we'll carry with us for the rest of our lives. Wow. It has been a few months since we last visited the NuWray. We had a wonderful dinner which exceeded our expectations. I ordered the shrimp and white fish broiled in garlic butter. Cooked perfectly. It tasted like Walleye and the shrimp were fresh and prepared equally well My wife ordered the fried chicken dinner which was perfectly cooked and not dry or overly cooked Give the hotel restaurant a visit. Great place, staff was very helpful and pleasant. We had dinner and the service was great however, the food was over salted. The biscuits, coleslaw, Mac and cheese and meatloaf. The portions were good for the price. Hope they will be a little less heavy handed with the salt. read more

Riding in the center of town historic hotel. Amazing restaurant. It is an old building so you can hear all the creeks.

Long wait to be seated for the breakfast buffet, had to ask for plates once we got to the buffet. Many of the dishes were running low or were completely out of at the buffet. Eggs were bland and couldn't get wait person to ask for salt/pepper to try and improve. Not sure what the concoction was that was labeled French toast. And we weren't able to try the hash browns as they were out of those as well. Bacon and sausage were delicious. We're local and definitely won't be going back for the breakfast buffet, especially at $15/person. read more

We were told that this a great farm to table restaurant and were extremely disappointed when, even when they were notified in advance of my wife's garlic & onion allergy, they made no attempt to accommodate her. She was told she could have 2 vegetable sides and no protein! A few days later another restaurant told us "No problem, we encounter this a lot, just tell us what protein you'd like and the chef will put something together." We didn't stay at the hotel but we did just eat at the restaurant and the food was on a whole other level of yummy goodness. The portions were great and the dessert decadent. Our server was so friendly and very attentive with refilling our drinks and making sure we were happy. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Burnsville. read more

Nu Wray Inn is a historic hotel and new owners have spent much time and money restoring the hotel to high standard. We found this gem online and were surprised by its location on town square. The restaurant next door is upscale with excellent service staff. Our room on first floor was cozy with comfortable bed. Antique woodwork throughout the hotel is used and restored for historic value. The owners are very friendly as they are building and restoring new spaces for dining and bar inside the hotel. We enjoyed this area so much, we reserved a room for Christmas and look forward to returning to see the remodeling advances. Creaky floors and original doors. Original beams and old fireplace in the lobby. Please realize the hotel is in restoration and improving every day. I recommend visiting. read more

We came for breakfast and disappointed to find a buffet. We still wanted to give it a try but were again disappointed. The French toast and homestyle potatoes had no taste. The gravy part or the biscuits and gravy had too much sausage and not enough gravy to it; plus too much garlic. This is not worth the $15 they charge. It was a beautiful hotel. Around every corner was an interesting piece of something preserved from 1905 or later. The town was charming. The shops were great. I ran into several of the store owners a bar called the "birdfoot" that night. It was a wonderful trip. 180 degrees from the chaos of Phoenix. 100% recommend. read more

We were in town for a wedding and were told to stay at The Nu Wray by the groom. We showed up after the festivities and Eric was waiting for us to show us to our room. He was really friendly and helpful! He offered suggestions on where to find some late-night eats and wine. The room was really charming and clean. We were really comfortable. We enjoyed our evening in downtown Burnsville. The inn is located on the "square", and surrounded by historic buildings. We loved the little town and the hotel was really cute-- it was a great night. Breakfast the next morning was included and it was HUGE, and yummy. We sat on the front porch and enjoyed the small-town vibes. I don't know why there are such negative reviews here. They do NOT mirror our experience at all. We had a great time and if we ever end up in Burnsville we will definitely say here again. read more

Upon booking, we received an email with the instructions. They do not really have a front desk staff, rather you punch in a code to enter the building and then there is a lock box to get your key for your door. The key was a joke. In fact, anything could open the door lock. We couldn't leave anything of value in our room while we were gone. The inside door lock worked correctly, so while we were in the room, it was secure. The room itself appeared to be clean and quaint. It had a small window a/c unit. The TV didn't work at all. They are using the Dish Network but they have too many TVs on the system and they are overloading it. All you get is stuck pictures and pixelation. Most of the bathroom looked clean except for the shower curtain that had mold or mildew on it. During the evening, I was sitting on the bed and felt like something had bit me. I couldn't figure out what it was, but I'd spilled my wine. In the morning we took off the sheet and mattress cover to soak them. That was when I noticed that there were a bunch of round toothpicks on the mattress under the mattress pad and that is what had stuck me. I don't blame Nu Wray for the toothpicks themselves. It would seem that a devious person was trying to hurt somebody. My concern, however, is that either the housekeeper missed them when changing the sheets and mattress cover, or they don't change out the mattress cover. I suspect the latter. There were no instructions for the WiFi, so we couldn't get on it. While there is a front desk, there is nobody there, so you can't ask questions. Also, there is no phone number to call with any questions. I understand that they are under new management, but it seems like they have some real opportunities for improvement. read more

Just "checked" in at the nu wray. It is very quaint and different however so far I love it. The snack areas have Keurig machines and coffees and other things to enjoy. There is a spacious front porch and great sitting and meeting type areas all over. Alcohol is allowed on the porch just don't step off it. Burnsville is a nice area to visit and enjoy. The crickets in the evening are awesome. read more

Rented out the entire inn for a family reunion, had lots of fun! With an old building you get a few squeaky hinges, but none of that compares to the rustic charm. Had tons of fun in the hot tub, by the fire pit, and making pancakes on the huge gas stovetop. Inn is right in downtown Burnsville, cute little town to walk around (but careful, many of the shops have unusual/shorter hours than in bigger cities). Overall, had a lovely time. read more

Our family of 30 rented out the entire inn over the Christmas holidays. Everyone was very happy with our stay. The house was decorated beautifully for Christmas which only enhanced the charm of the inn. The new owners, Joey and Eric, were very accommodating and responded quickly to our questions and needs. We had a fire in the stone fireplace every afternoon and evening and enjoyed hanging out together in the two living rooms and in the spacious dining room. And the commercial kitchen! We took turns cooking throughout the week and everyone was thrilled with how well-appointed the kitchen is. Even doing dishes was fun and got the kids involved! We found places to hike within a half hour drive and a great, community playground just blocks away, by the library. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we look forward to going back soon. We rented the entire inn for our large Christmas family reunion. It was the perfect site for us because we could all stay together. We cooked meals in the well-appointed commercial-level kitchen, and could hang out in the beautiful common areas without being on top of one another. The inn was decorated for Christmas, the bedrooms were clean and decorated nicely, appropriate to the theme of the inn. The new owners were very responsive to a couple of issues that came up during our visit. Burnsville is close to the woods for our hiking expeditions and a short drive to Asheville, where we spent a couple of afternoons exploring the shops downtown. A memorable trip. This Inn is the perfect mountain getaway right in the main town square! The Inn was built in 1833 and is the oldest operated Inn in North Carolina. With it's history of people such as Daniel Boone, Jimmy Carter and Elvis that have stayed there, it is the history buffs dream! The rooms are quaint and clean, all fit with tv's and satellite with DVR. There is WiFi throughout. The breakfast was great with muffins, grits, bagels, coffee and more. There is a very neat hot tub room for relaxing, and nice seating areas throughout. The owners are extremely nice and attentive and make you feel right at home! If you're visiting Burnsville, The Mount Mitchell state park, or just want a great weekend getaway, The Nu-Wray Inn is the perfect spot! read more

He could not have been more helpful or any nicer, answering all of my questions and even recommending a quiet room for my friends. A curious old inn. The property was very clean and the building is charming in a quaint town square. As others have said, the building is quite old and therefore very creaky and doesn't have modern soundproofing. Because we're were there mid week, there was no breakfast included. The furnishings were very nice and period appropriate. Our room had a claw foot tub with shower feature and curtain. A bit humorous for tall folks like myself. Because of the way they run the inn, we never actually saw any staff during our stay. They provide a door code to the building and a key lock box for the room. I came to think of the place in the way you would stay at a friends house if they were out of town. Ultimately I would stay there again if I were in the area. read more

New owners now serving family style dinner! My husband and I had spent the day at Mount Mitchell State Park and we're hungry for an early dinner. We happened upon the Nu Wray Inn where we were warmly greeted on the front porch to come on in for dinner. Not only did we get a lot of food but more importantly, it was delicious and it truly was like having a Sunday dinner at Grandma's house. It was all good but I especially liked the biscuits, creamed corn, pan-fried chicken and meatloaf. We didn't stay at the Inn but based on how friendly Joey is, I'd definitely recommend it. read more
