I have been going to the Oakwood for years, but my last several experiences there have made me reconsider. This past Tuesday, a friend and I went there for dinner before the Dasha concert down the street at the Park Theatre. The lone waitress shared that it was her second shift. The place was packed and we waited an eternity for our drinks, and what should have been an enjoyable dining experience ended up being a tense, unpleasant few hours. The waitress was not to be faulted at all. The management should have known to have another server given that a packed to the rafters concert was going on a block away. This place is a hidden gem, the menu is treasure for foodies! So many unique meals from all sorts of world cuisines. It's not a big menu but everything looks scrumptious! My friend tried the interesting burger called The Oakwood Crown and Coke burger. He said the juice tasted like that popular alcoholic drink. He said it was pretty delicious. I tried the 2 egg Beet Latkes. It was unique to me. The beet cakes were tasty and that sauce that comes with it was delicious! The horseradish dill sour cream. I liked this healthy meal. The potatoes were also well made. The waitress was super helpful and sweet. This place seems welcoming to all types of people from what I saw. I definitely recommend this place. read more

We have eaten here twice In the last month and both times we have had a very positive experience. The poutine is delicious and the burgers are definitely worth trying. The Saskatoon berry pierogies are an innovative and delicious dessert. Service is friendly, the place is quiet, and we cannot recommend it highly enough. I live in California and visit Wpg frequently and it is one of my favorite places. The food tastes homemade and whoever is behind this place has a lot of heart. Give this place a try. read more

For some reason, the exterior of this place doesn't fully represent what the restaurant is really like inside. I always figured this place to be more of a divey diner place. But I was very happily surprised when I walked in and it turned out to be this clean and cozy neighborhood restaurant. It was very pleasant inside and not too loud. I've been here a few times now and have enjoyed all my meals here. The place serves up a good breakfast selection - all around $10. Lunch options are $12-$15 with dinner entrees $18-$20. The menu is definitely familiar comfort foods like reubens, clubhouse, chicken fingers, pastas and burgers. They even have a kids menu and a 55+ menu - very family friendly place. I like their burger bar menu where they offer up different styles like basic, greek, western style and you pick your patty (beef, chicken breast, salmon fillet or veggie). I liked the california burger ($12.99) and opted for the chicken breast - it came with avocado, goat cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and sauteed onions. The fries were absolutely yum! The fries reminded me of the ones from New York Fries - skin on, and perfectly crispy. I enjoyed their breakfast meals too - very good portion sizes! I like that their food isn't overly salty. Terrible is all I can say. I was scheduled for an interview to which I was on time, even a little early. I walked in and was told to go back outside and wait my turn to be interviewed. I did of course, then another girl, clearly more done up than my simple self, was allowed to stay inside while the other girl was still being interviewed. At the time of my interview I came back inside to which I wad told to go back outside (in this heat), because the other girl was scheduled before me, except she was clearly late, so me being on time they should have taken me first before I was there before both of those girls but I waited til my time. Not to mention my partner and baby drove me to save gas instead of using 2 vehicles and me going on my own. So I have my poor baby here as well and I should have been in and out in 10 min or less. Instead, they don't lock the door when accepting someone in when it's technically not open which is very unprofessional, especially to tell somebody to go back outside but let 'prettier' girls stay. I am very disappointed in these actions and treatment. Its not anything special so oh well, but it wasted my time, still wasted my gas, made my 2 month old wait in the heat, and clearly yse favoritism. As an American there is a couple of important Holidays and Thanksgiving is one of them. My wife was working in a nearby state and it was less expensive to fly to Winnipeg and for us to meet there. Went to this place last night and was impressed with the food. I had the Meatless Loaf and my girlfriend had the All About the Peppers burger and opted for a side of gourmet fries. The food was excellent. I also like the fact that with their burger menu, they don't specify the patty. You are free to choose between beef, chicken and veggie, which I really appreciate. The price was also really good. The only sticking point was the speed of the service. They clearly needed one more server on duty, as the two servers working were struggling to keep up with cleaning tables, seating people, taking orders and delivering food. We and everyone else who came in after us had to stand awkwardly in the doorway for several minutes waiting for the servers to get caught up with their duties and clear off a table. They describe themselves as "a family friendly restaurant" with "some funky twists on a few dishes". These words can sometimes be code for "the food is boring and cheap because children don't like to try new things and parents are very often impoverished" and "one of our dishes contains hot sauce in the lowest dose possible." In the case of the Oakwood cafe it is not code for anything, it is truth. My wife and I rarely look at the menu before we go to a place so we weren't really sure what "vegetarian" meant in this context. Sometimes it means 1 salad that doesn't contain chicken and there is a plate of hash browns which can be upgraded to beefy hash browns for an extra 2.99. Sometimes it means there are so many veggie options my little heart weeps with joy. In this case it is somewhere in-between. We went for dinner and found there was good number of dishes that we could eat (3 sandwiches, 8 burgers (by virtue of swapping in a veggie burger for any of the burger options), 2 pastas, 3 salads, 1 entree, and a few sides). I got a bit carried away on that list... Anyway, we ordered: Mediterranean Pasta This came with: Garlic Bread Borscht (which isn't vegetarian, but we pretended) Vegetarian Wrap This came with: Sweet Potato Fries (upgraded for 1.99) It came to about $42 with a 15% tip. In retrospect our server probably deserved more than that, he was amazingly friendly and helpful and very sociable. Some of the best service we have received anywhere. The borscht came before the rest of the food. The soup is so perfect that I wouldn't bat an eye if someone told me my grandma was in the kitchen shredding the beets. But what really won my heart was the sweet potato fries. Good heavens they were good. They changed my feelings about all the yam and sweet potato fries that came before and will be measure for all yam fries that come after. They were hot, they were crisp on the outside, they were soft on the inside. The chipotle aioli was tasty and not too brash. Oh my goodness, go eat their sweet potato fries now!! The vegetables tasted fresh and were cooked perfectly. The artichokes were particularly good. The wrap had goat cheese in it, which was amazing. The people at the table next to us were praising the liver and onions, so you might want to try it too. My only regret was not ordering a milkshake. The verdict? If you find yourself there make sure to have the fries, they are worth every penny you spend. If you don't have a borsht-making grandmother to keep your soup stomach full, you should probably order that too. Because it was literally -right- outside my friend's apartment, this was our chosen breakfast spot the other morning. It was dead, which wasn't unusual for a weekday morning. Our server showed us the specials menu and I decided to go with 2 eggs, toast, and a fruit cup for $5 something. And a cup of coffee. I had my eggs scrambled with cheddar cheese. The food came out insanely fast! Like, under 5 minutes fast. Not too shabby. Everything tasted decent, not amazing or anything. The fruit cup had mostly melon and pineapple but also some raspberries and strawberries. I didn't really eat them though. They were mostly bottom of the basket berries and were a little crushed. We headed over to pay after and both our meals came to about $12. So much for the breakfast special. I didn't realize a tiny amount of cheddar cheese and a cup of coffee would add on so much.. My pal also ordered a special for the same price-ish and a cup of green tea. Apparently a Lipton teabag and some hot water cost $3. Hm. read more

By quickly browsing the menu you see that they specialize in the breakfast - lunch. I chose the Rueben sandwich with a Greek salad. The salad exceeded my expectations in being extremely fresh with a very nice dressing and a great assortment of everything you'd expect in a greek salad. Rueben was tasty as well! We were hungry but feeling indecisive tonight, so we came to the Oakwood, as it was close by. I had the Grilled Asparagus, Swiss and Tomato sandwich with a side of borscht and it hit the spot perfectly. The bread was grilled a nice, golden brown and wasn't too greasy, there was lots of cheese and the asparagus was very nicely done - not mushy, not too firm, and perfectly tender - not all stringy and tough like asparagus often is. The borscht was excellent. Flavourful, full of good stuff and served with a side of sour cream. After bringing us our drinks the server took longer than we needed to come back and take our order, but overall the service wasn't bad. I asked for my side of soup to come out before the rest food, which it did, and then when the rest of the food came out, so did a second side of borscht. She let me keep it, didn't charge me for it and wrapped it up for me, along with the rest of my sandwich (bonus, biodegradable takeout containers for non-hot items though the soup was packed up in styrofoam still.) Two sandwiches with sides, a bowl of soup and a beverage came out to $31 after tax, so it's not the cheapest place to eat but it's pretty reasonable. The atmosphere of the place is nice - comfortable, a little old fashion. It's the kind of place I can see taking my grandmother to. I live near the Oakwood Cafe, and when my wife and I went into the restaurant, the hostess welcome us and Introduced hersef to us, and when the hostess seated us at a table, she gave us menus, we were also told the name of our server and he would be with us in a few minutes. when our server arrived, he told us his name and said he would be our server for the evening. the server then asked us about the specials they they were serving, he then asked If we would like to order drinks, we just asked for water and we decided to order the specials which were delicious, the portions were appropriate, not too much and not too little, and the price was reasonable. We went here for my moms birthday..... sorry mom. I don't know who everyone else had for a waitress, ours was rude and none inviting. The food was fine, nothing more nothing less. Everything seemed like it should have had more flavours. It took about 20mins to get 3 beers and a mojito. Not a mojito by the way. Had to send it back, waitress was not happy about that. Took almost another 10mins to get another beer. Tipped 10%, should've been less. Overall we would have been better off going to the subway next door. Been there once, won't be back again. read more

A nice place for a casual meal, Oakwood serves up traditional breakfast and lunch fare. Eggs and pancakes are fresh, but lunches tend to look a bit more processed (and store bought). Had salmon with asparagus two nights in a row. Good. Husband had beef stroganoff one night (beef rather overcooked), and fish cake (appetizer) the next night. Pretty good. The mashed potatoes were pretty good. I would have preferred it if the skin weren't included. I know that restaurants never wash the skin as well as needed. However, the restaurant is super convenient. Next to the parking lot. One story with no steps, so very accessible for disabled & elderly. I appreciate that they accept groupon. So I paid $18.00 for $30.00 worth of food. I wonder why husband had to pay an extra $8.00, considering that we didn't order two full meals, no drinks, and no desserts. Oh well. I've been to this place quite a few times in the past, usually it was early morning for toast and coffee and for an afternoon snack (cake) and a soda drink. Friends have all been there and were often disappointed. We decided to stop in for dinner before heading over to the downtown for the curling at MTS and boy did we make a mistake for our menu selections. Girlfriend ordered chicken burger and what came was just nasty. She likes fresh chicken breast burgers at other places but this wasn't it. Instead what arrived was one of those quick frozen breasts that are injected with water and salt and often they are drowned with a brine solution, sometimes phosphates and other nasty stuff. Lazy or cheap joints use these and you can buy them at grocery stores for around 3 bucks per pound. I call these Frankenstein Chicken Breasts. Texture was jelly-like and from what I know, less than 10% protein and I'd ask such a restaurant that charges such high prices, why they aren't using fresh chicken breasts for the burger choice or a meal entree? Our waiter advised that it is the same type of chicken for the smothered chicken or as a side for a cold salad etc. My choice was even worse I'd say. Love liver but these portions of liver I got, were those processed pieces that looked identical-yes both pieces were formed exactly alike and if it's fresh breaded liver, no two pieces ever look exactly alike. These kinds served here also have a jelly-like texture to them and when I asked our waiter how it was cooked he explained that it was deep fried. Who deep fries liver??? Friends have had the pork cutlets and advised before to NEVER order the things because they are the commercial type that also look identical, almost like those frozen hockey puck-like fish or chicken burgers. Disgusting things and any kitchen that uses any of the quick to grill, deep fry or microwave items like the above, it's just lazy. I won't be returning to this place anytime soon if the same owners keep doing things that way because the prices are high and the food should be fresh and prepared in-house or they might as well just call it a chain restaurant and open up 20 more and lower the price to fast food amounts, which is what I was served for the ridiculous prices. Hamburger bun was good, probably a commercial one baked at any of the MB bakeries and that was okay, fries were homemade but tasted kind of bitter, probably the result of an over-used deep fryer and apparently it's used a lot for so many menu choices. This place is over-rated and I don't believe you'll get good value for your money. Portions are fine and the plate arrived pretty full but I'd rather have totally fresh food and less on the plate instead and since a chicken breast is such an easy thing to purchase and prepare at home, think about how easy it is to cook in a large commercial kitchen with all the better equipment. One of the things I always wonder about for Winnipeg restaurants, is why have a fine dining menu with so much fanfare and beautiful pictures if you're going to cheat on the ingredients because of convenience or you have poorly trained individuals with little skills? I'm pretty certain the place will attempt to dispute my above statements but they're all truthful and I know quite a few people who have been there and they're quite turned off by what's served. Winnipegers aren't easy to fool and when we want fast food takeout, we expect fast food. When we dine out and drop over $50 for two people with a good tip (can't blame our waiter if the place cheats on what they serve), that is usually seen as a finer dining price for food. If we ordered alcohol, it would have been more but they had nothing special for liquor anyway so why bother. Do they even have a qualified chef there or just "whatever cooks" who drop things into the fryer or throw into a microwave. If the owner or cook would like to advise here I'm sure a lot would like to know as I would since the menu appears to promote fresh food and the prices are high so what gives? Below my review was a picture of the chicken burger ordered. Ours was butterflied but was "squishy and jelly-like/spongy" and I have never had something like this in any other restaurant in the city. read more

I've been 4 times, the service is great. The food however is kinda meh with small portion sizes and fairly overpriced for what you get (especially the breakfast on a weekend). It was taco seasoned with bell peppers, sour cream, lettuce, tortilla chips among other things. It was good. Loved the flavor, although it was big & messy. The fries were homemade and standard.
