The venue is pretty spectacular with great views of the surrounding hills and valleys along with the vineyards as the hang of the side of the mountain. There were two aspects that pushed my opinion down a bit, neither are really the fault of the venue or business so I've stayed with the 5-stars. The wedding was held in an outdoor pavilion with great views, but during the first week of August quite hot. There are ceiling fans but they didn't help too much - I was sweltering in my jacket and tie by the time the ceremony ended (just be aware if you book something here during the hot season). The second, there are a lot of stairs as you are on the side of a mountain. If you have a hard time traversing a lot of stairs, there are other means of getting around so once again be aware. The main "hall" has windows with fantastic views. I thought the food was exceptional and wish I had taken more photos, but there were a lot of poor lighting (I was seated next to the dance area). My apologies for the missing check in and the lack of photos but I didn't want to be obnoxious at a wedding. Overall I love the rustic charm of this place and plan to return and more fully explore the wine offerings. I thought the service was exceptional with very accommodating staff, especially the bartenders.

Sadly, I arrived 30 minutes before closing so I had enough time for a glass of wine but not a time for tasting. The building and property is expensive with beautiful views of grapevine's leading up to the main building. There are several outdoor areas from which to choose to sit. The top one is covered with ceiling fans. With the threat of storms this afternoon, I chose to sit there. The view here is absolutely stunning- I can see several other mountains and the storms in the distance. The friendly host us at the register reviewed some wines with me so I chose the Plenitude. It's a blend of steel aged Chardonnay with voignier. It's crisp and perfect for a hot summer day. If you are in the area for an event or a weekend or an overnight, I highly recommend visiting both Mountain Vineyards and Winery.

There's plenty of free parking all around, but I opted to park in the hotel's parking deck(s) - there are two with two different access points, one on the side and the other around the back of the building. In all this Holiday Inn Express was much like others I've visited - it's relatively clean with nice staff and modern fixtures. I had a room with a king-sized bed as I was traveling solo - the room was a bit weird as it was obviously designed with two beds in mind - the back half by the window was essentially empty except for a chaise. On the one hand, I liked all the room but on the other hand, I think they could have placed a desk or something a bit more useful back there (coffee table and seating, maybe) - but that's a quibble. I looked over the room a bit while there and the finishes were slightly sub-par, but overall not bad. The thermostat kept the room somewhat icy cold - I had to turn it up above 70 to make it comfortable. There are charge ports conveniently located at the night stands and a coffee maker and small fridge, typical of "suite" style hotels. The coffee machine downstairs is always available and serves better coffee so I'd recommend it over what's in the room. Breakfast included most of what you'd expect - bacon, sausage, small quiche-like baked eggs. I kept things light. On checkout, if you're an IHG member you get to spin a wheel for a free gift - in my case a free chocolate from a nearby store (which opened after my leaving so I ended up giving it to someone else visiting). Staff were efficient and answered all my questions. There's a pool and workout room in the basement - filtered water is available in the workout room.

And with free parking, from the hotel you'll be able to walk everywhere in this beautiful, historic, university town in about 10 minutes or less - taking full advantage of its restaurants, shops, and gold museum. But oh, that paperwork!... It was really off-putting, with all these warnings about rules and penalties for breaking them (including fines and eviction for repeated noise complaints - although that's actually just fine with me). As the staff pointed out, though, everything prohibited has actually happened in the hotel. It turns out that Dahlonega is really two kinds of town - the sleepy town that I fell in love with, but sometime a party town! So if you're looking for the former, I recommend missing the mid-October Gold Rush festival, the Christmas festival, and (if you can find out) any destination-wedding dates.
