A wonderful restaurant where you can enjoy a large and delicious southern meal with kind southern hospitality. This restaurant gives you fried chicken, and a host of sides that will surely fill you up and leave you smiling. Feels like you are visiting a southern family that specializes in all the southern favorite foods such as creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra, collar greens, green peas, and several more. Drinks are included in the price and you get an option of lemonade, sweet tea, unsweetened tea, and water. You can ask for an Arnold Palmer and they can make that as well. Parking is a little confusing as the allowed parking spots for the restaurant is on the left as you enter the parking lot, and the entire right side of the parking lot says the spots are reserved for the Smith House hotel. There is a neat gift shop on the upper floor which is where you pay for the wheel and an old gold mine on the bottom floor where the dining hall and restaurant are. Coming to the Smith House has become a family tradition and we hope they stay around forever. Thank you to the staff and a solid high five and five stars for them.

I've lived here for 30 years and have always wanted to try the Smith House! Today my friend and I enjoyed lunch there! Due to Covid restrictions, you no longer eat family style together with other guests, the tables are set up for separate dining with just your intimate group. Our waitress was very hospitable. You place your drink order and then wait for your meal to arrive! I believe the selections may change slightly, but the day we went it was - Fried Chicken, country fried Steak, mashed potatoes, corn, lima beans, okra, etc. They definitely gave us plenty of food food for just the two of us (i took a doggie bag home). She mentioned you cannot ask for seconds on anything (we didn't need it regardless). :) A very tiny strawberry shortcake was the dessert. I wish there would have been options for the dessert. I guess I had this built up in my mind for so many years, that I had extremely high expectations, it was good (but I was expecting over the top). I cook a lot of these items at home already, so for me personally there wasn't anything extra special with the food. It was nice to walk around and see the old photos of the location and how it has changed over the years. I can check this off my list now. :).

Great chicken (but you can only have one piece).

I had been waiting for quite a while to eat at The Smith House. We ate lunch there this past May, and we were practically the only people in the restaurant at around noon. I figured it would be packed since there was a very well attended festival on the square. While the fried chicken was tasty, we would have liked more than one piece. Evidently in the past, you could request more of an item. That is no longer the case. The lunch was really nothing special. No gravy for the mashed potatoes, the mac and cheese had little taste, the green beans were not as good as they could have been. The okra was really good though, as was the stew; we did not eat the black eyed peas. We really wanted to like it, but it was disappointing. The young man who brought the food was very nice, but the food was slow to come out I'd the kitchen. Hopefully we visited on an off day.

Stayed 3 nights - 2 in the main house and 1 in the lodge. The accommodations are very nice, especially the room with a king bed in the main house. The lodge is more modern and very comfortable. It's a quiet place. (You have to sign an agreement to be quiet.) Loved being able to walk to the town square with the shops and Gold Museum. The family-style fried chicken dinner in their restaurant was terrific, and our server was friendly. "Southern Hospitality" does not really exist here. The staff is not very friendly, but we found that attitude throughout Dahlonega, so this was not an isolated event. All but one of the staff at the registration desk acted disinterested. One was actually scowling. Not hospitable. We'd go back because it was comfortable and the location was good. But don't expect them to be friendly.

It didn't matter that we reserved room 6 in the original building. We were told it was not available when we checked in.

I'd love to rate the Smith House higher but unfortunately we cannot. We reserved room 6 in the original building (see confirmation pictures) but when we checked in were placed in room 38 in the new building. I see in previous reviews that the 'owner' answered the reviewer and said they should have gone to the front desk and asked for it to be made right. We did that. I asked for the room I paid for and was told it was not available. I then asked could we have any other room because the room we were given was very small with the smallest window I've ever seen. It was similar to a dorm room. The small room was clean but that is all I can say for it. There is no air conditioning in the bathroom unless you leave the door open and no wants that. I would not recommend this hotel if you think you are going to get what you paid for because you are not.

Gross. Gravy tasted like Vienna sausages. Green beans were bland like out of a can. Not the same place as 15 years ago.

The server took forever just to take the order but that's not the focus of this review.... The ribs were so tough that I had to use a fork to even ATTEMPT to eat it. I ended up bending the fork so instead of being charged for the destruction of a fork, I ordered dessert just to make sure I had SOME type of food. Although I had friends who had worked there, the quality of the ribs were so bad that I expressed my concerns to the server. He said he would express his concern to the owner. I assumed I wouldn't have to pay for the ribs because I could only take a single bite and I paid for ribs, not jerky. But the owners decided just to give me my dessert half off. This isn't a cheap place. So the manager saw that I barely touched my ribs and that I was obviously upset. So instead of taking the EXPENSIVE ribs off the ticket, he gave me my dessert half off. Avoid this place if at all possible. There are far better places to eat and oh my goodness so much cheaper.

We obviously show up at 4:30 to prepare unloading and 5pm comes around and the owner "Chad" is no where to be seen. The bride, groom, myself, and multiple other attendees that arrived early to assist with set up were unable to reach the owner. At 5:45p what appeared to be a highly intoxicated "Chad" opened the doors, made a sarcastic joke, and left. I was APPALLED! We were left 15 minutes to decorate a wedding (tables, chairs, photobooth, bar, food, dance floor, music, etc.) and because of the owner we lost time of the reception because we were left with 15 minutes. I read in a review that the owner refunded $200 and played this off on his mother. Taking accountability. You quite literally ruined my best friends reception and you want to give her a half-a** apology and not even half back what she paid for the amount of stress she was put through. There was a clear contract and it was breached. Highly do NOT recommend! Also all the lighting fixtures on the columns are different hues and colors and do not make for uniform photos. The owner was late and the venue was underwhelming and the owners response to everything is almost worse!

I had my crew up from Chattanooga in town, and we couldn't have picked a better spot to celebrate. We kicked things off at the main restaurant for brunch, and honestly, the vibes there never miss. I wanted to keep it a bit lighter since I knew we'd be exploring, so I went with a crisp glass of wine, some fresh focaccia, and the Thai Butternut Squash Soup. That soup was incredible. It was perfectly creamy with just the right kick. Everything hit the table so fast, and the service was on point. My friend even surprised me with a lemon drop cupcake, which was the sweetest touch to a chill afternoon on the patio. After we ate, we headed out for a tour and I was honestly shook by how massive this property is. I've been here before, but I had no idea the trails went back that far. The views are unreal and made for the perfect post-brunch stroll. By the time we finished the trail, we'd worked up a second appetite, so we finally hit up Trattoria di Montaluce. I usually skip it because the brunch normally leaves me stuffed, but I'm so glad we went for it this time. That wood-fired Margherita pizza was easily the best I've had in a minute. There's just something about that wood-fired crust that hits differently! This has seriously been the best birthday month ever, and everyone coming into town to celebrate has made it so special.
