The Oasis: it was better when you could smoke there. Not that I smoke anymore, but some places reside on the dingy side of the fence requiring a redeeming factor, and said factor for the Oasis is smoking. Now that you can't smoke, you can actually see from one end of the bar to the other. It's so big and grimy, and here I thought it was an intimate below ground setting, with a mysterious hazy ambiance. Okay, but really, this place is massive. It's kind of like a cafeteria that serves beer and rocks out the children's karaoke, you know, for the university toddlers. I'm being snippy in this review. I must curb this attitude, because it's really just me digressing from an earlier encounter with irritating people... breathe... and better. The Oasis: a dingy bar. It is what it is. I would never choose to specially go there, but have ended up here on a number of occasions. It's fine. They serve booze. Everyone wins. Somebody pass me my cigarettes...

While staying at the Cambridge suites nearby, two buddies, my father and I decided on the Oasis to go watch a huge UFC/MMA fight. Pro's: 1.Booths available, some with electric sockets to charge your phone. 2.Everything was pretty well-priced 3.Lots of seating 4. Bouncers that look like they definitely do not BS around. Neither good nor bad: this is a typical dive bar so don't expect anything fresh, modern or classy. For some people, though, that kind of atmosphere provides just the right ambience for a raucous sports bar. Cons: 1. Very understaffed. Waitress had a deer in the headlights kind of expression on her face that could either have been her typical stress response, or she had chemically prepared herself for a busy shift before the time. I strongly suspect both these, but thats hardly the point.. A bar's main income is the money from alcohol sales, and it doesnt make much sense to me to have a lone waitress out there slowly serving dozens of tables...no matter how glazed over her expression may be. 2. The heating pipes run inside the walls, so if you sit in one of the booths, the person sitting nearest the wall is going to literally roast right there like a Thanksgiving Turkey. I tried propping up the space between me and the wall with parkas... till the walls started melting the plastic off one of my jackets.... yes it really was that overwhelmingly hot. On the balance of things, I don't have any opinions of the place that are either very bad, nor very good.. Its a bar that serves a purpose to certain groups of people; sports fans that want the greasiest food possible while enjoying the game and downing pitchers of beer (of which this establishment carries a very small selection)

If it's a Thursday night and you're looking for something to do than grab some friends and on head down to the Oasis. The karaoke/ sports bar is a huge hit amongst University students. But what's not to be desired about cheap draught, wings and karaoke? You're guaranteed to have a fun time - especially if you break up the courage and decide to do a number onstage. So, what are you waiting for? In the words of Garth Brooks, "slip on down to the Oasis!"

I've heard there's glass on the floor everywhere you step; almost like those movies. So my fellow yelpies, I boldly walked into the legend of the Dome... with a group of friends. The Dome is a maze. But you know... the more you walk around.... hey! let's grab a drink.... more walking.... cheers? let's get a beer.... let's see what's over there.... SHOTS!...... you've GOT to see this....WHERE THE HECK ARE WE?! It's great that if you purchase your cover charge you get access to all three places, but maybe they should make it less confusing. Certain Human Parts Are Exposed MYTH: I didn't see any! Glass everywhere. FACT: I thought out of EVERYTHING, this was gonna be the biggest lie ever. No sir Bob. It's not uncommon to have people drop bottles and not have any of the staff clean the up. Wear protective shoes yelpies!! But I soon realized... that the DJ literally has 10 songs on his playlist. That's it. And they are on constant repeat. So you hear the same song at least 10 times during your stay here. My friends and I found a secluded bar section where no one was buying drinks. The woman said that our total for 3 drinks was 10.50 which is a great deal! So we forked over a 20 and she gave us back 15 in change. Great for us... not so great for the owners!

The restaurant is hard to miss, with several bright red bicycles decorating the entrance--a charming nod to its name and a great photo opportunity. We stopped by around 3 p.m. without a reservation and were pleasantly surprised to snag a table for two despite the restaurant being quite busy. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt warm, cozy, and inviting. The service was equally impressive--professional, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling my best that day, so I kept my order simple with a hot tea and the Beef Carpaccio. Our server immediately noticed I was under the weather and thoughtfully made sure I always had a fresh supply of hot water for my tea. It was such a small gesture, but it made a big difference and spoke volumes about the level of hospitality. The Beef Carpaccio was absolute perfection. Made with AAA beef tenderloin, it was delicate, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. I only wish I had been feeling better so I could have explored more of the menu. My boyfriend ordered the Linguine all'Aragosta, featuring local lobster, tomato, garlic, vino bianco, cream, and parmigiano. I managed to steal two bites, and it was heavenly--rich, fresh, and packed with flavor. The lobster was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was indulgent without being heavy. Lastly, we ordered the creme brulee and it was perfection! Creamy with the perfect brulee sugar top crack and not too sweet. It's easy to see why Bicycle Thief has become such a Halifax institution and why it's reportedly one of Sidney Crosby's favorite local restaurants. Between the exceptional food, attentive service, and inviting ambiance, it absolutely lived up to the hype. We can't wait to return on a future visit--and hopefully next time I'll be healthy enough to enjoy even more of the menu.

Pool tables are a nice addition... I wasn't really sure what the $2 cover was going towards besides upkeep? A grungy/funky spot in the North End that's for sure!

Charlie's is where you go when you want to go to Cheers. (Not the Cheers on Grafton St., the Cheers on TV according to your 6 y/o mind, which is really just the the theme song, fuzzy visuals, and conflating real life people with Cliff and/or Rhea Pearlman.) In short, it's where you go when you come home nostalgic and want to see all your old friends, enthusiastically buy each other drinks like it's a genuine gift, dance to one of those weird new electric blue jukeboxes, shout and pontificate around a pool table, and generally have a back slappin, squeezey hugging, chortling little time. The decor is like any affordable house, only the door has a key code and a woman sits at a table with a guest book when you come in. This does not make you feel cool, but it does make you feel like life is funny. The bartender is so used to over-friendly drunk patrons that nothing can melt him. I imagine that deep in his core is something more kind than anything I have ever known, but it is too precious to be shared. The last time I came here, someone apologized for asking me to dance when I turned him down. Apologized. For my rejecting him. A dark little mineshaft to the salt of the earth this place is, lemme tell ya.

It does have your average pub style food... but the prices were so, so cheap!! and they were listed to INCLUDE tax! A hamburger and fries for like $5.50?! Fish and chips for $6.25?! Insane!! Insanely good! I got the fish and chips (I'm turning into my father, ordering it wherever I go, uhooo!). The pieces were large and the batter was perfect; you could tell the fish was fresh. The chips were home made and delicious. We were the only people in there besides the few gamblers in the games room and the staff. So, obviously our server was super attentive and speedy; he filled our water glasses for us about 4 times! It was awesome. I feel like Gus' pub is like the hidden gem of greasy pub style food. Even though we knew about where it was, we walked right past the beautiful two-story historic house initially. We knew by taking a look at the website they do not accept reservations, which was fine with us. We were, however, going on a Friday night. On walking into the main entry, that space was packed wall-to-wall. Within a few short minutes, one of the staff greeted us. They don't exactly have a formal wait list here, from what I could tell. The staff member offered us the drinks menu and asked if we'd like to order something while we waited on a table. We ordered up a couple of pints, then looked around for some open space to stand. They have two standing bar rails, one in the main area near the bar itself and another one in the middle dining area. This place has about the most creative layout of booths and tables I've ever seen. They do have an outdoor patio out back, but we didn't take a look at that. They have quite a few very comfy two-person booths around the interior. It appeared the way the wait list worked was that they either have a phenomenal memory, or they actually use the bar tab you open to work like a wait list. It seems to really be more about how many you have in your party, and the exact size of any tables/booths that open up. We might have waited about 30 minutes or so for our table for two up in the front of the main dining room. Every single person on the wait staff here is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. The beer list is great, loaded up with so many good local and Nova Scotia craft beer options. The food menu is what really makes this place special, though. We were on vacation, so we may have a tendency for our eyes to be bigger than our stomachs can handle. There was just so many amazing looking dishes. We started out with a pickle jar, fried taters, and the tomatoes appetizers. I have to say, and my wife agrees, the tomatoes dish was the best of everything we had. Its made up of sliced cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, shallots, capers, and garlic chips. All that is sitting on top of creme fraiche. By the time you're finishing the dish, you start thinking about a straw to finish up that creme fraiche. Good grief, that was so good. Don't pass on the fried taters, though. Those seemed to be mashed potatoes formed into rectangular big fries, cooked almost like panko and served with horseradish sour cream. After all that, we could only muster splitting the deli style chop salad with cold water shrimp on it. Our great waitress talked us into an order of the brown bread, a very soft kind of Irish soda bread I believe. That bread just melts in your mouth. If you decide to venture out to The Narrows, you're in for a total experience. You'll feel like you stepped back in time to a real British pub... the house must be from somewhere around the mid 1800s. Every room is warm and cozy, with beautiful woodwork and curious antiques in all sorts of nooks and crannies. You may have quite a long wait depending on the size of your party and how busy the place is, but trust me... its worth every minute.
