This place is upscale to a 'T', with a team of servers moving in perfect choreography from the complimentary bread and pickle tray all the way to dessert and coffee. It's dinner and a show, and we're happy to pay for both. This time, we indulged in the Chateaubriand for two, and they graciously accommodated our preferences for how each portion is cooked. A separate server even brings out the mashed and baked potatoes, because why settle for one? The atmosphere is formal, timeless, and classy. I would give this restaurant minus zero stars if I could. By all means, avoid this restaurant. The horrible service and disappointing food have only gotten worse over the years. I rarely leave bad reviews, but this experience completely ruined my birthday. My husband and I came in at 5 p.m. for my birthday dinner. Because we had arranged childcare and only had a short window, we asked if we could order appetizers only. The restaurant was nearly empty, but the manager refused and told us we could leave if we weren't ordering a "full dinner." As we were trying to explain that this was my birthday and we simply wanted a quick celebration, another staff member blocked us from walking further into the restaurant. I said, "It's my birthday. We'll order food and be in and out within 30 minutes." The waiter laughed at me in response. That was humiliating, and I left in tears. After we left, we called the restaurant to explain how upset we were about the way we had been treated. It was only then that we learned the manager who refused to accommodate us and asked us to leave was actually one of the owners. That made the experience even more disappointing, because the lack of empathy and respect came from someone responsible for setting the standard for customer service. I've visited this restaurant several times over the years because it's convenient. The food and service have been on a steady decline, but this experience was the final straw. I'll never return. An ok old school steakhouse that is reasonably priced. Wine list is extensive and reasonably priced vs downtown Toronto options. Steaks are reasonable too. Had the Ceasar salad that was prepared table side. A little disappointed that they used pre-grated Parmesan. Can definitely taste the difference and not in a good way. Also it was a touch too garlicky, and we love garlic. Cheesy bread is fantastic. Shared the big prime rib (huge), rib steak (delicious) and the porterhouse (good as well). Beef mains were on point. Although their support staff that provided the horseradish clearly looked inexperienced and moved like it. Also wasn't a fan of the main servers using the Ceasar salad prep table as a drop off point for dirty dishes. Especially when it is setup beside a table that is about to have the salad prepared. Last night went to The Octagon with parents, this restaurant is very unique outside but inside is very elegant and historic feel The servers was so polite, he even pulled the table for me to walk in and sit. They started us with garlic bread, a plate of pickles, olives and bell peppers which was very good, to open ip everyone's appetite with some sour starters Then I ordered a green salad, crab cake, prime rib (octagon cut) and a filet mignon. The salad was green with balsamic which was my usual, the crab cake was crispy and tasty Then the prime rib (octagon cut) meaning approx 24 ounce which I shared with my dad. Wow when the steak came to the table, it was big...very juicy as we cut into it. The 8 ounce filet mignon was cook to perfection. We were looking for takeout choices for Christmas Eve dinner and decided to try this place this year. The food quality was completely disappointing, especially at a price of $100+ per person. The cooking was missing some basic flavouring and temperature control skills that even many cheaper chain restaurants such as moxie or Joeys can offer. We ordered the following items: - Caesar salad: Terrible. Supermarket salads' sections definitely offered much better and fresher salad than this place. The lettuce 2as completely dried up. - Crab cake: flavourless and he usual expected scent expected of this dish is completely missing. - Escargot: Portion is small. It tastes dry. - Appetizer BBQ rib: The one we bought from supermarket was much better than this one. The portion was small and ribs tasted completely dry. The flavour was all on the surface. - Lobster bisque: it tasted like canteen food. It was so watery and flavourless. - Baked oyster: The oyster didn't taste fresh, it was overbaked a little bit and the buttery and heavy chunk of "sauce" was completely split up from the oyster itself. Horrible dish. - Live lobster: It was overcooked a little bit. Portion was smaller than we expected. - Scallop: flavourless. - Chocolate mousse: Again. Nothing worth remembering. I spent my teens driving by this interesting rustic looking steakhouse but never tried it until recently. They are a long standing establishment serving the York Region community for over 30 years and has apparently stuck to the same menu throughout the years. The food was very simple and basic though it was mostly tasty! My favorites included: BBQ ribs starter: this was broiled and drenched in their homemade bbq sauce, it had so much flavor and a hint of sweetness Shrimp cocktail: these shrimps were absolutely massive, like mini lobsters and the homemade cocktail sauce was delicious too King crab legs: served with garlic butter, you can't ever go wrong with that What fell short: Dover sole meunière: I found this to have fell a bit flat, there was some flavour but not enough Oysters: They were fresh but however missing a mignionette (which I think is essential) Overall, I have some mixed feelings about them not changing or being innovative with their menu. For a "no-frills" steakhouse experience, you can expect consistent and tasty food, however if you want an elevated premium experience I wouldn't say this was it. read more

Super old school steak house, better value than the more trendy downtown places . They don't require jackets in the dining room any more. You now get a mix of clientele, some dressed up, some not so much (at the same table, sometimes). I got the 12oz NY strip, medium rare. The second one came perfectly cooked. (The first one ended up on the floor with two bone-in rib eyes, as there was a waiter mishap on the way to the table.) I skipped the potato and asked for veggies, and they gave me lots (including very nicely cooked broccolini). Table side Caesar salad is also good. I've heard great reviews from friends so decided to try it for dinner Firstly, it felt like a very rushed service. We barely sipped our drink before the appetizers arrived. My partner was waiting for me to come back from the washroom before eating but our server decided to serve him salad which he is capable of doing himself. When a larger table was seated, all attention was diverted to them. Our waiter forgot to bring my partner his request for a 2nd drink! It seems like the waiters pre judge you first before serving - especially those who are regular customers, or dressed a certain way. If a customer is dining in your restaurant, they are well aware of what they are ordering and/or paying. The appetizer portions were great and tasty - we had escargots & beet salad. Our entrees came out soon after - presentation is a bit lacking. Mash potatoes are served with an ice-cream scoop, lacking salt. My partners steak came with two mushrooms. The plating seems cold and boring. My prime steak was perfectly cooked but presented in a pool of jus - nothing special. Overall, wasn't a great first experience. For starters we shared their Caesar salad, that was made in house literally in front of you, one of the best Caesars I've ever had, fresh and decadent. Coat check service. Friendly staff. Nice authentic Italian decor. Clean setting. Fast service. Sat down and our server came right away to ask about drinks. Drinks came promptly after. Whenever something is needed you'll get it quite fast. We ordered striploin, rib steak, and prime rib regular cut. For appetizer we ordered the escargot. Complimentary bread, pickles, olives, and some peppers offered. Pickles were well pickled and nicely sour. The peppers were nicely pickled as well and added a great kick to the food. The garlic bread was quite oily and full of garlic flavour. Tasted great and nicely crisp but can make do with less oil. Escargot - was a bit bland and oily in my opinion. Felt heavy from the oil used to cook them but wasn't flavourful enough. Prime rib - meat was nice and tender. Jus was nothing special but the horseradish finished the dish. Rib steak - if your looking for something hearty with an umami taste, get this. Well seared and full of flavour, the rib steak was tender, seasoned well, and cooked to medium rare as we like it. Bone in always seem to taste better. Full entrees come with a potato side and veggies. Broccoli and carrots were glazed with honey giving it some sweetness. Still a bit oily. Mashed potatoes were nothing special and more on the less impressed side. Overall steak was tender and flavourful so I would say that the quality is there for the price. It was really nice to come back here after a 30+ year absence. The Octagon has been a stable of Thornhill for decades. But beyond that, it just makes a great steak! We came as a group, and service was wonderful. They were attentive and patient (we had kids in our party). I had the lobster bisque to start, which was very rich but very tasty. This was followed by an 8oz filet mignon. It was amazing! My one criticism - it seems they cook the steaks more rare than most. I asked for medium, but it came pink inside. Others asked for medium-rare and requested they be brought back to the kitchen for more cooking (they were rare). The Octagon provided a really nice night out. We will be back! read more

Nice decor. Valet parking. Make reservations. We had a lovely dinner for four. Two orders of filet mignon, one strip loin, and one salmon. I wish the food was served warmer. My husband's side was a baked potato. He noticed that server did not ask him if he wanted sour cream or butter so after some time my husband had to request it. He found it odd that butter piece was given to him with a fork, a giant pat was placed into the centre of the potato, and the server had much difficulty removing the fork from the butter inside the potato, lol. We also were not asked if we wanted freshly ground pepper on our meat. Of note, bottled water $9 each. With these prices there should be no margin of error. Cappuccino and desserts of warm chocolate cake and pecan pie were also very good. I really enjoyed the garlic mashed potatoes. read more

Everything from the valet service to the multiple servers at your table. The caesar salad made table side is a must. Last year we attended this restaurant for the first time as we are from out of town, The experience was amazing. We were seated on the upper level and the service was exceptional as was the food. My family treated us to dinner there this past Saturday to celebrate a milestone birthday. We were seated this time on the lower level. We could see 3, sometimes 4 waiters fussing over a table on the upper level while we were basically ignored. Came here with a group of friends for New Years Eve dinner. This is my second time here and we didn't feel the service existed at all. In terms of food the menu was a bit limited but that was understandable given the day it was. I ordered the octagon cut at medium rare and it came out more rare than expected. It was a quick fix by the server and it brought it to the right cook easily. The cut was pretty juicy and decnet flavour. So the 2 stars are for the ambience and the food. In terms of service we did not get any attention at all. For the entire night I think our server came by only 3 times in total including taking out orders. Everything felt rushed and did not seem like the service I normally get at any of the higher end Steakhouses in town. Come bill payment it was the same problem, server refusing to split the bills for us and blaming the group for calculation error when he himself misheard. Upon exiting server and manager just walks by without acknowledging any of us at all. Gotta say, I'm quite disappointed and would not recommend to any of my friends or colleagues. read more

I had a fairly bad experience here and would probably not come back because of it. The decor is old fashioned but the seating is comfortable and intimate. The customers were generally older which isn't usually the vibe I go for but it was a nice quiet dinner. So in terms of food, no major complaints but my meal was average and my friend's steak was very undercooked. The worst part was when we paid the bill and had to split it amongst several people, the waiter misheard the amounts we wanted to put on the machine and was quite rude about it. This was an isolated experience so I wouldn't want to discourage people from going, but personally there's nothing really drawing me back here. read more

My wife tried to place an order at Octagon Steakhouse in THORNHILL for take-out at 6:08 pm this evening. They told us they won't take our order. We begged with the phone contact stating we are regular customers in fact since the 70's. She said she see what she do because she just took her last order for the evening moments before us. Steve the Manager spoke with my wife most rudely, saying can't take your order and your should have ordered 2 days ago then click. Steve has never been this way. We never experienced this kind of order notice period. Octagon has always been a classy restaurant with great food and courteous staff. This is an old-school fine dining establishment. The decor is all dark, carved mahogany wood and back-lit stained glass windows. Servers are dressed in dark suits. The austere atmosphere and serious wait-staff can make guests feel uncomfortable. If you skip dessert or don't order alcohol be prepared to feel judged. The steaks are tender. The Caesar salad prepared table-side is expensive at $18. But, at least it is meant for two. Prices are high, as expected for this type of upscale restaurant. We had a little problem with parking but that's because all the snow other than that my experience was 10 out of 10. I highly recommend this place, it's not cheap but its worth it. A super-old-school Steakhouse with a gentleman's club meets Catholic Church type of environment, with lots of wood paneling and stained glass, plus solid service and food quality, however I feel the price point promises more than the experience ultimately delivers. I've been here several times now and there's never been anything wrong. I always have good food and good service, but it always feels like everything is just not quite impressive or worth bragging about, considering Octagon's fine dining aspirations and price point. I love the old school garlic bread, and the pickle, olive and pepperoncini platter, and the prime rib in particular is usually very good. But price, and portion, and overall experience, all certainly fall a few steps behind steak houses in Toronto. The Octagon is simply not in the same league with Tier 1 steak houses in Toronto like Harbour Sixty or Jacob and Co. And I would suggest that it lands in the lower end of the Tier 2 places, delivering a more upscale environment, but similar food quality, to a place like Smith Brothers in Scarborough. So in the end, I've always had a solid meal, with solid service, and I've enjoyed repeatedly devouring huge baskets of garlic bread, plus a ton of olives and skinny hot peppers, so I typically leave feeling satisfied, but like things didn't quite manage to live up to the price I paid. read more

I have driven by this restaurant so many times, but just never had a chance to come in and enjoy a steak, I will be back and I will someday get to try their steak at this very traditional steakhouse! The Octagon took me back to soaking up the sun in Acapulco, because just like one of my favorite places in Acapulco, they make your caesar salad from scratch right at your table. I grew up in the area. The first time I went to The Octagon restaurant, I was probably 5-6 years old. My parents went every 2 weeks for many years (until I was in my late teens). I used to LOVE The Octagon, I always recommended it to anyone who was looking for delicious ribs, steak etc. I was there 2 weeks ago for lunch. Probably my first time in 5 years. I feel like there is so much more hype to the name now then there should be for the food. Service - walked in and got a bit of attitude. No "how are you doing this evening". We were seated in a very dark part of the restaurant (you would need a flashlight to read the menu). They like to cater to larger groups & the business lunch clientele first. We had to flag down our waiter to ask for everything - water, wine, coffee, more garlic bread, our bill etc. Surprised at the service considering the fact that there were many familiar faces - most of them have worked there for almost 20 years. Food - dated plating - nothing visually appealing about it. Steak neptune - no seasoning on the steak. Hollandaise was bland and clumpy and clearly placed under a broiler because the top of my food was brown not the colour of the hollandaise. French onion soup - same bowls from 20 years ago - very little onions, cheese or bread - too much pepper in the broth Chicken neptune - zero seasoning on the chicken - hollandaise was the same clumpy cold sauce as the steak neptune. No flavour - only highlight of this dish was the amount of crab meat Shrimp cocktail - overpriced - yes they are large BUT 5-6 years ago they were much bigger for around the same price. Caesar salad - way TOO much cheese - they don't make them like they used to. Yes it's nice that they make it at the table, but that doesn't make it taste better - big disappointment for me overall. Garlic bread - burnt on one side - but it was still put in a basket and brought to our table. This place is certainly not up to par with some of the other great steakhouses (Barberian's, Hy's, Morton's etc.) They need an update out of the 80's for decor and with the amount of lights all over the place a bit brighter especially at lunch would help.
