Amazing, as always. It's no secret that I love coming when the crab cakes are on the menu. This visit, I had my mom with me and she got the oriental chicken salad. I tried a new dessert this time around, the mint chocolate cake and it did not disappoint. I'm glad I thought ahead and got an extra order of the crab cakes, I ended up taking one to work with me over the weekend.

I always have something delicious at The Old Diary! Today I had Chicken salad on a croissant served with chips and a salad. Dessert was Monster Cookie Pie. What I like about this restaurant is that it serves delicious food with a unique style! I always experience something new there!

This is a really good place to take family. The menu has something for everyone, and if you have little kids, it's nice because they have a play area with books and toys. One thing that's hard for me is having a 2 year old and trying to go somewhere decent to eat because it's hard for her to sit still. The food is really good, and priced pretty reasonably. They apparently changed owners in July, and the food is still as good as before. I "stumbled" upon this place a couple of years ago not long after I moved here. It's located cady corner from the library, so it was nice to grab a couple books, and then lunch with hungry kids. Their German Chocolate Pie is my favorite:) read more

Was in town visiting friends and cam here for lunch. Awesome home made food. Chicken Salad Club Sandwich, Portobello sandwich and French toast were all fantastic!! Spinach salad was outstanding! I think I could drink the warm bacon vinaigrette by itself! Ice cream and lemon raspberry cake to finish off were literally the icing on the cake. Great experience... read more

Their food is not spectacular. While living in Macomb, I learned that the reason to go to Old Dairy is the ambiance and people that gather there. It is the meeting spot for finding locals! Their ice cream is GREAT in the summer! Not much for gluten free. read more

We ate there before Graduation Ceremonies at WIU one year. We ordered the French Toast and were very disappointed. It was burnt on the outside and mush on the inside; the cook was using too much milk and not enough egg. When I approached the cook, a heavy set women and complained, I was told that she was sorry we didn't like it and then she walked away from me. No offer of a new order, no offer of a refund. That was $45 (for four people!) wasted, as the food was inedible. If you are in Macomb for breakfast, stick to McDonald's. read more

Not worth the money if you are going for ice cream. The cooler is not keeping the ice cream frozen. I got a hot fudge sundae hubby got mango in a dish by the time we got to table both had melted to the consistency of ice cream you left out little to long on the counter. I will say that their lunch crowd was great and the food looked yummy. To bad we were just stopping for ice cream. read more

I've been going to the Old Dairy twice a week for two years now, and I've NEVER had a bad experience. The food and service is nothing but excellent, and the servers are like family to me. They always call me by name and they know exactly what my "usual" is. The prices are reasonable and overall the place is first class. Best place in Macomb for breakfast. read more

Great place for breakfast, for sure! Friendly staff, quick service and great food - all at a price that was hard to beat. The Old Dairy will probably be a regular stop for us now - and it's a 40 minute drive. read more

Excellent place to go for morning breakfast! It can get busy depending on whats going on but its a nice little deli where you can sit down and enjoy your mornings. Coffee is alright but it can be hit or miss. Service is pretty good however! read more

The Old Dairy provides excellent food, in a clean environment, served by the friendliest staff. We have overstuffed chairs where you can relax, study, read your favorite book, or play games with your friends. We have a full breakfast menu that is available ALL DAY which includes fresh omelets, biscuits and gravy, eggs to order, homemade muffins, grilled cinnamon rolls, and much more. Lunch consists of a variety of sandwiches, fresh salads, and homemade soups. Some sandwiches are grilled on the panini. Come and relax with a bottomless cup of our exclusive blend of coffee. We also have a full service coffee bar to tame the espresso lover. Our pies are made from scratch: Apple, Coconut Creme, Vanilla, Caramel Apple Upside Down....just to name a few. Pies are available by the slice or whole. We also have homemade cookies, cakes, brownies. All of our desserts are available for bulk purchase. We serve Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

History

Established in 2004.

The Old Dairy is a family owned business that was started to fulfill a dream for Peggy, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in May of 2003. The abandoned building was purchased in the fall of 2003 and the transformations began. After much planning, construction, demolition, rebuilding, and a lot of elbow grease, The Old Dairy is as you see it today. During the construction, many long time residents would see our family out in the community and would say: "Oh, you bought the old Dairy." We credit the community for giving our business its' name. The interior renovations continued, based on the nostalgia of the Macomb Dairy that originally started across the street at 217 S. Lafayette, conducting business at 210 S. Lafayette from 1959-1978. Our goal is to provide a place to meet up with friends, make new friends, and enjoy time with family. We provide table games, books, and comfy chairs to encourage our customers to come and hang out. We love our customers!

Meet the Business Owner: Peggy M.

Peggy Joyce Mueller June 10, 1942 - September 20, 2006 Peg took comfort in the fact that God knew exactly what was "up ahead" for her. She had faith that HE would be with her every step of the way and save her from her enemy: CANCER. Her biggest challenge in her battle was saying goodbye to all of the people that she cared for so deeply on earth. She loved The Old Dairy, and so enjoyed creating new friendships, recreating old friendships, and cementing existing friendships. The restaurant was a great escape for her during her battle. The only evidence of her illness was her beautiful bald head. Her energy was unstoppable. Many remember her running around 'taking care of people', often times providing a listening ear to someone who was struggling. She is with her Savior, Redeemer, Rock, and Friend, in perfect health. As promised--HE saved her. What a gift God has given us.....the promise of eternal life. We will see her again in heaven. AMEN.

I find the comment by Dave H on 4/2/11 appalling concerning the Old Dairy and a Health Issue. I live in Macomb and have had dined here over 100 times. I have never had an issue with Service, food, or anything. The restaurant is exceptionally clean. I have yet to have a bad meal. The service is outstanding - the staff is always friendly and courtious. Ketra has always been cordial to me and I have never seen her respond negatively to any customers. I spent 20+ years in the Restaurant Industry. I was certified in Restaurant Sanitation. I find it VERY hard to believe a statement that says the customer(s) spent several hours in the Emergency room due to a food borne illness. The McDonough County Health Dept would have notified the Old Dairy and immediately been in to inspect / investigate this claim. I personally checked with the Health Department and they stated The Old Dairy has a very good inspection record. The Old Dairy serves 1000's of people a year. It is located in Macomb, IL, the hometown of Western Illinois University. They service Students and their parents, as well as local residents and travelers. If the statements David H said were true, I am sure they would have been out of business years ago. read more

Some friends and I visited a place called The Old Dairy in Macomb Illinois recently and we were set back after seeing the way food was being handled. The food was awful. We asked for a refund and we were ordered out. Later in the day we had all become ill from the food, and took turns waiting in the emergency room of a nearby hospital. The owner, Ketra Kuniej refused to respond to our complaints. I found they had history of health issues. This place should be closed. If you are traveling in the area stay away for your own health. I do not know how a place like this can stay open. It should be called the old dirty barn instead of dairy. read more

My family has been regular customers of this family owned restaurant for years. The atmosphere is cozy - you can use the wifi, sit on the couch and play a game of chess, or have a get together with friends or family in the back room. The food is delicious. Sandwiches, soups, salads, pastries, and ice cream. It is spotlessly clean, the workers are friendly. It's like home away from home. I live out of town, and every visit to Macomb involves a family get together at the Old Dairy. It is the community meeting place for townies who stop in for a cup of coffee or a bowl of soup. I began frequenting The Old Dairy when it opened for business several years ago. I stopped in several times a week for breakfast, lunch, a cup of coffee with a friend, or ice cream. Over several years of eating there regularly, I can only remember delicious food, and gracious staff who are willing to accommodate almost any request. A few years ago we moved from Macomb, but every time we go back, we have to visit The Old Dairy for lunch and we always enjoy the chance to see old friends. My children even still say it's their favorite restaurant after 3 1/2 years of living in a larger city with many restaurant options! read more

My friends and family love eating and gathering at The Old Dairy. It is a very friendly place to take out of town guests. I am part of a coffee group that meets there three times a week and believe me, we would not be there if it was anything like mentioned in the above review! All of the staff are very friendly and food delicious! Just yesterday I was there for a Birthday lunch with some friends! It brings back so many memories back to the time it was actually the Macomb Dairy and as kids we would go there for Ice Cream Cones and field trips for our 4-H Club. read more

Looks like a nice little coffee shop when you first walk in, comfy leather couch and chairs, several small seating areas. It smells WONDERFUL! They have their own coffee. A cup of coffee costs $3 which I thought was high, but it is bottomless. As you go further into the restaurant the room opens up to be a larger area, more of a diner. The menu is nice with cold sandwiches, soup-of-the-day, salads. I paid $6 for a cup of soup (an actual coffee cup full of soup) and a cup of coffee. Both were delicious. read more

Kathy S must be related to David H because their reviews are about identical. TOD is the place to be when you are in Macomb and want a terrific dining experience and a warm relaxed atmosphere. They have a friendly staff and the food, well, it's fantastic! I have tried almost everything on the menu at some point or another and it's all a wonderful, tasty treat. I love this restaurant, I've eaten breakfast here since I started attending WIU last year. The french toast is my favorite breakfast item to get. It's so decadent, delicious, and overall amazing. I have also eaten her for lunch and dinner. Sorry, Mcdonald's is gross in comparison, with their powdered eggs, and such. Go to the Old Dairy and try the homemade pie too, my favorite is the German Chocolate. I've never had pie like this! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! LOL read more
