Stopped by for a drink and whiskey and the following happened. We sat in the back bar and ordered two beers and wanted two Irish Whiskeys (Red Breast and Goldspot)there was none at the back bar so we went to the front bar and asked the female bartender for Red Breast or Gold Spot and in a snarky response stated, " we don't serve American whiskey. I guess she was not aware both whiskeys are Irish. This by far has been the least favorite pub we have visited in Ireland and I would not recommend it. read more

I haven't been to The Old Oak in years and to be honest, I think it has gone down hill. The food is very expensive for what you get, the portions are small and not great quality. The staff were chatting a lot to each other and I found it hard to get their attention when I wanted to order my food at the bar. The place seems a little "dirty". Went here after a long day on the bus. The guy behind the bar refused to accommodate an allergy for food. We got up and left. This day and age if you don't accommodate allergies you are really screwing up. read more

It's just a great pub, which is hard on a street that already has quite a few. The staff are quick, the layout means you can have a rowdy night or a quiet pint, and it has a great location. It's also home to Cypress Avenue, one of Cork's best live music venue. It's one of the few places in Cork that regularly takes a punt on indie bands, and responsible for some of my favourite gigs. read more

On a random night out in Cork with a friend, we chose this little pub just to pop in and have a pint before moving on. At least, that's what we thought. As we walked through from the small street front we found a lovely, big, open pub full of people and glowing with ambience. There were a few other tourists but a lot of locals as well, and the place was buzzing. It was a cold and rainy Saturday night and this was the perfect place to escape it. The bar was well-manned and the drinks flowed freely, and after a while a band set up on centre stage and came out to play a great set of singalong covers. And the crowd obliged. We were so impressed by Cork pubs that we left to go and peruse a few others, but ended up returning to the Old Oak and finished our night there. Stopped by the Old Oak last night for some drinks after dinner. It got crowded around 10 pm and It was a great crowd. The music was wonderful and the drinks were great. Only negative thing was that they are not a full bar and are unable to make cocktails. Other than that, It was very spacious and an enjoyable time. Will be back! read more

I love the atmosphere here ! I always had great fun and St Patrick's day was amazing ! The prices are cheaper than in the other pub around : perfect ! We were sitting across the street at the Oliver Plunkett and were getting excited to finish our beers and head over. Looked like there were a lot of upbeat, ridiculously dressed people headed in. As we got ready it became clear they weren't letting someone in because they looked like a lesbian. We caught up with her after seeing her try to reason with the doormen for ten minutes or so and asked what went wrong. She let us know that they wouldn't let her in because they considered her outfit a track suit. She was wearing camo printed pants, a crisp t-shirt and a clean blue zip hoodie. The real issue is she had a lad's haircut, in my estimation. She was one of three gals we saw this evening in the same pant. Fortunately her 7 friends (who all already paid for their tickets) left from being inside in solidarity. Still, it was clear they ruined a nice young woman's night because she fancied someone other than the boys. They lost business from them and us. Hopefully the ownership can "update" the staff's training and get on the right side of things. I'll be happy to hear they're for everyone's enjoyment in the future. read more

If you're over 38 and still have a passion for having fun and drinks,, this is the place for you. Drinks are reasonable, staff are sweet and chatty, music is good, live bands are fun and dancing is plenty. However, the group is older circa 35-55. Not that that's a problem but it isn't a great place to go if you are under 30,, or a student. Although they still tend to go there. Stop in there (After 9) the foods not great.... read more

There is good craic to be found at this late night venue. Although the music is aimed towards the older generation and the dancefloor a bit on the small side, there is a friendly and relaxed vibe here. The Old Oak looks very small on the outside but in fact it is a spacious venue which is a bonus exspecially if you are in a bid group. This pub/bar is definitely the place to go at on Friday or the weekend, During the week it can be empty. read more

*tourist perspective* Disappointing. Rude and lame. Guy at the door wouldn't let me in at first. Took a glance at me and decided that I couldn't come in and I was too drunk. I actually thought he was joking at first. I asked why, and he claimed that he'd been doing his job long enough to just "know these things". Well turns out he's really bad at his job, as I was nearly sober. Eventually I bugged the guy enough to get let in. I walked in, took one glance of the pub and my buzz was killed. Boring. Bright. Quiet. My partner and I had been traveling Ireland for 10 days and were batting .1000 with local pubs...Some of the finest in the world with the nicest people I've ever met, but unfortunately Old Oak was a strikeout. I am genuinely shocked at the way we were treated tonight. My friends and I have been visiting this pub every week for almost a year to play board games. We buy several drinks each, take up very little space and are very quiet. Tonight, out of the blue we were told to pack up and never play again after 6pm - despite, as previously mentioned, coming here from around 7pm every Saturday for almost a year. There were plenty of free seats around us and no customers had asked us to move or stop. We weren't given a reason by the management, and they even had the gall to look surprised when I pointed out that they had just lost four regular customers. I had been recommending this place to people, but that stops today. read more

The Old Oak hides quite the large bar for something that maintains a modest front landing. Housing a large dance floor and multiple bars inside, I was glad to mark this one off the pub crawl list and get a little happy dance in my feet going. Certainly the younger crowd area (20-30) but quick service at the bar with drinks and able to find a table or stool if you needed to rest the feet up for a bit after a long day. read more

THE OLD OAK Made my way to the Vision Centre today to see the Tony O'Connell photos but the North Main Street venue is closed on Mondays. On my way back through town, felt like a coffee. The Old Oak was close at hand so I called in. Don't be fooled by the short frontage on Oliver Plunkett Street - this is a substantial bar. A friendly reception awaited me at the counter and the smiling assistant, all gloved up for hygiene, served me a decent cup of coffee plus a blue-berry muffin for just €2.00. Yes - two euro for the two. There are bargains to be had. It was easy to find a seat in mid afternoon, though there was a good scattering of customers in. Had a quick look at the lunch menu and saw that again the prices were quite reasonable. Waved to the barperson on the way out and got another smile. Enjoyed the short break and I'll call again. read more

You'd probably not guess from outside, but it's probably the largest bar in Cork with several rooms inside. Always popular, the bar staff are attentive, and there's a wide selection to drink. The music is standard pop and rock, great if you like that, and there are sometimes live acts. This place is great to bring a group of people, you can chat easily, it's large enough to accommodate, the music is fun, and you can dance. read more

This was a great place to start the night as the drinks were quite inexpensive. Only €3.75 for a pint of Murphy's and €4 for a pint of Guinness, all other pints are €4.20. The inside is huge, plenty of room to roam and meet people which were in their 20's and 30's, but there were plenty of people in their 40's and 50's.... It was mellow and even though the DJ was decent not many people on the dance floor which was small. It's good to get a few cheap drinks at, but best to move on once you've got your buzz going. read more

This a a great pub to go to all week. Very reasonable prices and a very big pub there being about 5 different areas. Most nights there are bands playing and if not there is a DJ. This place is great for every age group and i would recomend it to anyone for a nice normal night out. Nice big smoking area out the back and if you look inbetween the 2 sets of doors you can find cyprus avenue which is a place they hold bigger gigs. read more

The Old Oak is a pretty good spot. I have been in here several times and it always has a good atmosphere. The staff are grand, the music is good and luckily the clientele seem to be in their early thirties and over (I am not but it is nice to get a break from all those young 'uns once in awhile). The dress code is fairly casual, you could wear anything from a maxi dress to to a more fitted dress to dressy jeans! This place is not how you would expect it from the outside, it is lively and much bigger than it appears. I like the fact that even though it is guaranteed to be busy at the weekends it is not overly so...in other words you have some chance of sitting down eventually! I think if you were not familiar with Cork city and wanted a place where you could relax and have a fun night this place is a safe bet!!! read more

Me and my friends were visiting this place every week for almost a year now, and today we've got kicked out of it, because we became uncomfortable for playing board games. The thing is, we've been doing it from the moment we first came to this pub, but today we've been told to leave it, because, even if people come there to watch the games on TV, there was no more room for people actually playing some games. It was really disappointing and rude, since the management didn't bother losing 4 regular customers. NOT COMING BACK THERE AGAIN! read more

HOMOPHOBIC STAFF, A BAD THING TO WITNESS Two male students ejected from Cork bar 'for kissing' Monday, August 22, 2011 - 06:11 PM Two male Cork Institute of Technology students were allegedly thrown out of a bar in Cork city on Saturday night for kissing on the dancefloor. They say they were approached by a bouncer at the Old Oak on Oliver Plunkett Street and issued with a warning after sharing a brief kiss. They later kissed again on the dancefloor and claim security told them to leave at that point. When contacted by Cork's RedFM this evening, one of the students said that he is seeking legal advice, while the Old Oak said there was no manager available to comment at this stage. Much larger inside than it looks outside. Great pub atmosphere and cheap but tasty pub food.
