A Marston's pub next to a B&Q, sound good? Probably not. We were not unimpressed by the bar as we entered the door past the beer garden though. Yes, it's obviously a chain, and not quite as quaint as a Vintage Inn, but it was not bad at all. I liked the montages and scenes of the Glasgow cityscape. I also liked the music, it was chilled, soulful and much better than I expected. We sat and serenely awaited our server, well except for me popping up to see the specials board. As a wee tip ask the barman to take a photo of it cos you won't be able to stand back far enough to capture all of it!
The wait to be served initially deserves a slight moan, it was just slightly too long, when our server did show though she was a force of banter. We really liked her. Fun and helpful, and soon our order of piri-piri chicken wings, beef rendang and a trio of lamb was off to the kitchen. It has a good range of drinks, particularly real ales, and enough lagers/pilsners to keep most folks happy.
The piri-piri sauce on the chicken was a bit mild for our taste, but yes, I always say that :) We enjoyed it, it was probably slightly overcooked, but not really to the detriment of the taste. My partner enjoyed her lamb, she did have to cut off a fair wad of fat, some people love fat though and it is needed to give the meat flavour. It came with plenty of veg and she said it was perfectly cooked to order.
My beef rendang was really aromatic, lots of lemongrass and lime-leafy taste, not quite enough spice though. Beef rendangs should have a thicker, darker gravy. This wasn't too disappointing, I accept they have to cater for lots of different palates, but to serve so many chips and so few grains of rice! Well, it'll do I 'spose. *resigned shrug*. It also came with a baby naan and an apricot jam.
The reason for a low four and not a three, friendliness and the two-fer menu on all items. A bill for a very decent, value lunch of £31 including a shared starter and drinks, not bad at all. read more
