Everything about this village place is stylish. It's nestled in the foothills of the Mourne mountains and the cold North Atlantic. Across the beautiful bay you can see Greenore, Carlingford and Omeath in the Irish Republic.
Our aim here was breakfast, our first visit, once again on a recommendation. It was nice and airy inside, hand sanitiser available on the way in and no problems with social distancing. It has a few tables out front but we dislike being cold.
We were surprised to find it was very busy and became more so as we were there - with hikers and bikers (cycle & motorcycle) and families with young kids. Our surprise arose from the current dine out deal by the government - which we'll all pay for in the future.
The deal is that the government (that means taxpayers) knocks up to £10 off eat in food and non alcoholic drinks per head that will end tomorrow - 31 August 2020. The offer applies Monday to Wednesdays so we found that Thursday through Sunday that eating out was not so busy. (The deal makes a flat white in my local Starbucks £1.34 from Monday thru Wednesdays).
So to this place and for just under £17 before a tip:
My wife had the full Irish, but it had a twist, as instead of soda bread there was their own home-made soda bread. Almost everything on the plate was delicious - especially the quality bacon, tasty sausage and moreish black pudding. The mushrooms were also delicious.
The white pudding was poor and under-seasoned when it should be well seasoned (sage, coriander, white pepper, mace, ginger, allspice and nutmeg) and of course lots of oats.
Oddly, or maybe not, the menu stipulated that no variation was allowed on what's on the large fry-up plate (the meats were likely grilled). I've no doubt our very inventive natives had to come up with all sorts of variations that made this a necessary measure. I guess the tomato half was being traded for extra meat. It's a pity mind as we'd prefer two black puddings to one black one white pudding.
I had a smoked salmon omelette, and we each had darn good cappuccinos. The salmon once again was delicious. Really, really delightful and properly seasoned.
The omelette was 3 eggs with two fillings for the set price (mushrooms not in the choices) but once I picked the salmon there was nothing out of the few remaining choices that I felt would go well with it: there should be fresh dill and/or good capers offered. Tabasco should also be offered. Delightful place and busy busy busy. Just imagine had it been on the deal it would have been around £8 for two. read more
