Oh how the tables have turned on Old Town Saloon. I moved to Fresno in July, and starting my first semester at state, it was told that Old Town was the place to go. My first experience was great, and I couldn't wait to go back.. It is true, Thursday nights are the best nights to go-- mostly college students/ people around the ages of 21. I had mostly gone on Thursday nights, a few times on Saturdays. It is always full so if you want to get in, go there early! . I am from Merced, it isn't much different than Clovis, so I don't know why they feel that their BAR is like a Vegas Club. If you don't get there by 9 on Thursdays, expect to wait in line. The funny thing is, once you get in it usually isn't even packed, so I don't know why they feel that they can keep people outside waiting who want to buy drinks and dance. They have these VIP cards that people have, which can get in at anytime of the night and skip the line.. The sad part is, it is mostly girls who are hideous, fat, and can't dress. I called once to see how you could get one and they told me "once you start coming regularly for about 6 months, Thursday THROUGH Saturday, bartenders recognize you, the bouncers recognize you, and that they know you don't start trouble, they will issue a VIP card"..... Really? The DJ sucks and plays the same play list every week and every day. They really should invest in a new DJ for different nights. I swear I can tell you which song will be played next. The drinks are OKAY, $2.50 Coronas you can't go wrong.. But I have ordered Vodka plus sprite or tonic water and they are always so strong that I can't even drink them. The bartenders can be rude, but I know which ones to order from and how to talk to them. I have over heard a bartender complain about a drunk girl once mimicking her and how she ordered her drink.. Bad customer service? The place is small and could really do an uplift. If they just painted the walls and got rid of some of the junky decor, it would look a lot better. Ok so, the main reason why I will never go back is because I recently celebrated my birthday there and had some friends come down to celebrate it. Our plan wasn't to go to Old Town, but somehow we ended up there. It was a Saturday night and we had to pay $5 to get in (which is dumb, c'mon what are we paying for to get in?). The night was fine until 2 am and they were yelling at my girl friends to get out of the bathroom. What bar does that? Then as we were waiting for our taxi, they told us we couldn't stand outside the bar because it was loitering, totally understandable. Our cab was right around the corner and my friend made a sarcastic remark towards one of the bouncers and somehow the Clovis police were just right around the corner. My birthday night ended with a friend arrested for no apparent reason. He is half black and with a staff full of white people.... Well, I can assume why he got thrown on the ground and arrested. read more

Do not waste your time and money at this shit place of an establishment. There are plenty of bars in Clovis and Fresno that are better than this trash bar. The only successful night they have is college night. A quick spot for trashy college kids who drink shitty drinks and probably do not know how tip. Good riddance to Old Town. This review recounts an incident that happened in June 2008. I'm originally from the Central Valley, but currently am a student at UC Berkeley. My college friends and I were on a road trip and traveled throughout California last summer. On the last leg of the trip, I decided to visit my hometown friends since two of them were celebrating their birthdays. It was decided to go to Old Town after dinner and this was my first time enjoying "nightlife" in Clovis, a town for which I've always held great disdain (even more now). After standing in line, the bouncer stared at my valid CA driver's license and then at me. I had obviously changed somewhat in appearance since age 16, now having some facial hair. The bouncer however, refused to let me in. I requested to speak to the manager/owner and when he came out, it was basically the same line: We have the right to refuse anyone entry. I was confounded. Being of Indian descent, racism has always been a concern, especially considering the times we live in, and of course, people in Clovis are not really the most enlightened of folks, but never before had I encountered such open disrespect and rudeness. I showed the owner the following forms of ID: current CA driver's license, Harvard University ID, University of Cambridge ID (UK), UC Berkeley ID, and an international student ID. All showed my picture and two showed my age (22). I was dressed in formal clothes. But the owner would not budge and offered no reasonable explanation for his actions. Outside the bar were two members of the Clovis PD. The owner had been talking to them about some unrelated matter earlier. I turned to one of the officers and explained the situation. He replied rather rudely, "Even if we could verify your ID, and your age, the owner still doesn't have to let you in." Technically, of course that's true. In light of the circumstances and the fact I produced 5 IDs, I expected the police at least to be a little understanding, but that's Clovis PD for you. They weren't going to bust the balls of a bar owner they had a "good" relationship with. The police obviously could not make the bar owner let me in, but they could have at least demanded an explanation and attempted to remedy the situation. They did no such thing. Instead, I was left with a very uncomfortable feeling that even the law had deserted me. And that is a terrible feeling for someone to have in this country. I could understand if I was out of dress code. I'd understand if my ID was expired or I looked vastly different from the picture. But that was not the case. Was I, an honors student who produced IDs from some of the world's most elite educational institutions somehow not worthy enough to enter Old Town? Was I not even entitled to an explanation? Apparently not. Old Town's behavioral reflects poorly on the entire town of Clovis. People here in the Bay Area always assume that CV folks are ignorant, bigoted, etc. and I always try to explain that is not really the case. But way to go Clovis and Old Town Saloon for fulfilling the stereotype. read more

Came here with a friend started off good. In general i like the place but the "DJ" gets pretty annoying singing her heart out the whole time. The guy bartender was awesome, my friend is from out of town so unfamiliar with this bar and as he was checking out the back exit that leads to the parking lot, he asked a female employee if the gate or whatever was unlocked and if we can leave that way, i was sitting down, and when he was coming back in to get me she said he needs to leave? Bitch, that's what he was doing. I didn't find out until later she was a complete ass. Bartenders were nice tho. Girl needs to check her attitude though. Say that to me and yeah it will be a problem ASAP. He wasn't belligerent or anything so no excuse for that. read more

I would give ZERO stars if i could. Be careful with the old women, if they don't like you, they'll over charge! By $30-40 if you don't pay attention. I'm glad there are more people that posted how rude the older women are. I can't believe how incredibly rude they are to everyone and still keep that job! I always have a great experience at this bar. Brandon and Steve are the best bartenders and they have the best bouncers as well that make you feel comfortable and safe. My friend and I went in for a cocktail and was greeted by a woman wearing a headband. She asked for our I.d's. Ethnicity has nothing to do with the quality of service, however, this worker became hesitant in returning my friends I.D who is Irani. Her demeanor changed when giving back my friends I.D. We've been coming here for awhile now and I have to say, the staff here is awesome! They remember who you are, what your usual drink is, and are some of the hardest working people out here. Nikki is an AMAZING bartender with a hilarious personality. Jake and Steve are also great bartenders who never fail to make any of their customers smile. These are the BEST bartenders I've ever encountered and truly appreciate the hard work they put in to ensure their customers are having a great time. The bouncers deal with attitude and drunks on a daily basis but always remain professional and kind when dealing with the drunken public that is Clovis. The bouncers are either overzealous or nonexistent, creepy guys roam around freely, drinks are never quiet right, and there is always at least one trouble maker in the room. It's unfortunate that I have to give this place even one star for the outrageousness my best friend had to deal with last night. I understand that in bars you must be selective with the people you allow in, but bouncers should do this effectively. The mindless rejection of a 5-foot precious and beautiful girl who wears a bandana on her head because of a genetic hair loss disease (Alopecia) has myself and our group of 12 customers we arrived with, rather outraged. Firstly, she has been in this bar multiple times before, bandana and all, and there was never an issue. When the bouncer told her she could not go in because of her bandana, my friends explicitly explained to this man that she was wearing it because of a hair loss disease and that she had been in there before. We ended up going next door to Martin's bar where the bouncer said to me that there was absolutely no issue with her being in their bar, head scarf and all. Sure, this is a private location that can select customers how they please to enter into their bar. However, the purpose for my post is to request that the management of the Old Town Saloon will read this and properly act to train their bouncers to identify something that was not a threat nor symbol to anyone in the bar from what could be an issue. I'd also say my friend deserves an apology for this irrational discrimination. If not, I request that all fair minded individuals considering in entering this bar, BOYCOTT and go elsewhere. We went here last night after karaoke at bobby salazars ended, which was a blast by the way. The dress code isn't posted but my husband was refused entry due to and apparent dress code violation. I gave him my hoodie so he could get in even though it was so tight, just so we could get in and join our friends already inside. I would have left right then and there if our friends weren't having a great time I didn't want to ruin anyone's night and they were our ride. After we got in the doorman was eyeing us the whole time.At that point I was mad and told my husband don't spend a penny here they don't deserve our money. But he did end up buying a round of Jager bombs for our friends. First two people my husband asked ignored him. Next guy said I'm not a bartender ask someone else. Finally we got a guy to make us our Jager bombs, Without the "bomb", and told us he would charge us $3 extra per drink to separate the Jager and the red bull, they just gave us it mixed together already. My husband is still wearing my sweater at this point 3 sizes too small and so he finally took it off because he was hot and constricted,and as soon as he did we got kicked out by a different guy. They claim it was because he was wearing white but there were at least half a dozen other people in there wearing white. When I told the bouncer this, I expect to see all the other people wearing white kicked out with us. Mind you in the bar the whole time we were sitting on the barstools minding our business(fuming mad to ourselves but trying to get over it so we could have a good time), but in the bar we made no scene. The bouncer then told us nobody else is kicked out because my husband is the one they have a problem with(why? Is it because he's a big guy? Do you feel threatened? Does he look like a thug? Not sure what the issue was). If a policy is a policy whatever but it wasn't posted or ever explained why we weren't welcome and why my husband was harassed. It's hard not to get mad and yell back at these idiots the way they talk to you but it just gets you nowhere only more mad. My husband was so fuming at this point I was just happy to get out of there without any more trouble. Luckily my friends were already leaving when we got kicked out so we just got an escort to the door. We will never go back, places like this do not deserve anyone's money. Considered calling BBB or the owner but from other reviews seems like that will get us nowhere. At this point I think I'll just try to forget about it, but other people deserve to know this story, seems like we are not the only ones who have encountered this. I do love old town on Thursdays, but ONLY thursdays. It is a must to arrive early, (like 9:30ish) or you will never get in and have to go slum at martins. I feel sorry for every person that's has this place as a bar to go to. On their 21st bday. For having the smell of vomit and ass hit you like taco shits isn't worth waiting in that line. Do bars in Clovis really need a cover charge. I have been to bars in many states and different countries. If there is a cover you usally get a free drink or all you can drink. Cool place to just hang out in low key no reason to get all dressed up. It is next door to the cellar a not so great dancing joint i hang out here and sometimes check the cellar after midnight if friends feel like it. Overall chill place.
