I was excited to book this group based on the reviews. Communication via text and email was ok…read moreleading up to the event. However, they did not send their list of 300 songs until I asked for it. They sent it via email and I replied back to that same email. The day of the event they did not recall that I had sent them a selection of 14 songs to play. I sent it to them via text right there and they pulled it up. They ended up only playing about 2 songs on the list and kept taking long pauses between songs they mostly chose themselves. It almost seemed like they did not want to play from the list I sent. They asked for requests but sometimes the guests did not have any but they continued to wait around. It was a little strange how many pauses there were. They did not play 14 songs at the end of it nor did they initiate taking a photo with the celebrants as stated in their initial email. My expectations were unfortunately not met.

They also did a great hora which got all of our guests ready to party. We received a number of compliments on the band afterwards. Mark was a pleasure to work with and was very enthusiastic. Let me start by saying that barbershop-style four-part harmony (and humor) is not for everyone…read more That warning laid out, for those of you who like this type of thing the Harmonizers are a fun time. The legendary group (again, in barbershop music circles...) is currently going through some difficult times skillwise -- if this was a sport, they'd say the Harmonizers are "going through a rebuilding period" -- and is about half the size it was in its heyday (now 60-70 singers), but they still put on a lively, enjoyable performance. Most impressive to me was the performance of the group's "VLQ" (Very Large Quartet), "Cameron Station." This was a group of around 20 members of the Harmonizers who perform a couple songs separate from the larger group. They show the talent and potential of the Harmonizers with deft voicework, tight phrasing, full sound, and a depth of spirit/feeling/emotion/excitement behind their singing that I found missing in much of the performance by the full Harmonizers group. Again though, despite my interwoven criticism, I thoroughly enjoyed my first in-person experience with the Harmonizers and look forward to seeing them again.

We engaged Night and Day for a private party at a lovely Capitol Hill restaurant (Ninella) and wanted an ensemble that would amplify the elegance we hoped to achieve for our party. Throughout the evening, Night and Day furnished that elegant touch, understated and balanced, and demonstrated why hiring professionals (who know each other and have worked together) makes a real difference. We were treated to vocals from Renée Tannenbaum, who certainly charmed our guests and helped create the atmosphere we hoped to achieve for our friends. I note that Night and Day also rehearsed with one member of our party a song (As Time Goes By) and troubled themselves to get a copy of the song in advance, arranged as our party member intended to sing it. We would recommend Night and Day to others, would certainly engage them again if the occasion arose, and would welcome hearing them perform at one of DC's local venues.
