TOI, to me, is the preeminent practice in North Central Florida for any and all orthopedic concerns. In 2018, I had a very successful knee replacement at the Gainesville location, receiving both surgery and Physical Therapy for pre-hab and re-hab training there. Now, in 2026, I am returning for a hip replacement, and am very pleased that TOI has remodeled its intake protocols so that, in my experience, there is little to no waiting (!) -- in the front office, for radiology studies, for face-to-face with providers, and for PT/OT visits. There seems to be a fresh sense of well-being and contentment among the staff and providers, a feeling of smoother and more efficient management of people and time. Additionally, TOI has opened a walk-in Ortho Emergency clinic on site. read more

I had a great experience with TOI for a TKR, but every follow up appointment came with at least a 15 minute wait. I recently had an appointment with Dr. Flynn, who was recommended to me by my knee surgeon at TOI. I checked in a few minutes before my appointment time, and ended up waiting an hour. At that point, I told the front desk I was leaving. There was no attempt at any time to let me know the doctor was running late, to apologize for the wait, etc. TOI does not respect their patients. I won't be back, and cancelled my one year post-op appointment with my surgeon because of their shoddy behavior. Go elsewhere. read more

I spend a great deal of time going to pre-procedure "consultations". I wait for half an hour to see a PA for a few seconds. The consult consists of (1)"what's your name?, (2) what's your date of birth and (3) on a scale of zero to ten, how would you rate your pain today"? End of consultation. You are then led to scheduler to schedule either the procedure or anther pre-pre- procedure Consultation. Every time they see you, your insurance company gets billed for about $400. It's a good gig. The pre- procedures could easily be done via Zoom, but the Orthopedic Institute might not be able to charge as much. I don't understand why insurance companies put up with this practice. Patients time is worthless at the Orthopedic Institute, but they are the only game in this region unfortunately. read more

Called for over 2 hours and still no where. Last time took 2 days to leave a message and got a call 3 days later with no help at all. I came here for a pinched nerve and they took me in to refer me to their PT. I thought the day of the appointment came so I called to verify, I had called three time and everytime I was told I did not have an appointment or I was calling the wrong institute. I called again and they told me to call ReQuest PT which isn't a part of their institute nor takes my insurance. Wasted my time calling them. So I called The Orthopaedic institute again and told me I had no appointments but that they'll give me a call back when they figure out whats going on. I had to resort to drive there for them to tell me my appointment is next month. The in house staff in this place is amazing, but the customer service over the phone is actually horrible. They diagnosed me with carpal tunnel and did the operation. So I was misdiagnosed for I have PMR. So without a correct diagnosis the surgery was performed. What I really needed was a doctor from Cambridge, MA who diagnosed my issue over the phone. The surgery went well and their cash register rang at a high note, but I did not need the surgery. Terribly unorganized with FMLA/short term forms for work. Plan on weeks of lengthy phone calls, being placed on hold, being lied to, just get ready and know you'll have to stay on them daily to get your work forms signed off on - and you'll be charged a Share Care fee for another company to fill them out - what you wait on for weeks is a doctor to sign off - but don't worry - you'll get your bill on time. read more

I've been here on numerous occasions for me and family members. The staff is always friendly and courteous and the doctors are top notch. Parking can sometimes be a challenge during peak times but other than that no complaints. My wait times have typically been reasonable and there are multiple waiting rooms to avoid crowding. The entrance lobby has complementary Starbucks coffee....nice touch and the waiting rooms have water available. Wheelchairs are also in plentiful supply for those who need one and are available just inside the lobby entrance. Today's visit was for an MRI. They had called me prior to my arrival to go over a questionnaire so upon arrival today I only had to sign the paperwork done by the staff person during that phone call. I had a pretty significant co-pay since my deductible wasn't met yet and they offered to break up the payments if I needed that. They were very helpful. The MRI tech made me feel very comfortable and gave me a blanket and headphones and let me pick the music. I was in the machine for about 20-25 minutes but it went pretty quickly. Definitely recommend TOI for any of your orthopedic needs. read more

Last year I injured my ankle multiple times and needed surgery (Brostrom Procedure). I went to The Orthopedic Institute (TOI); Dr. Touissant was my doctor and surgeon. I was extremely nervous about the surgery and rehab, but he and his staff were excellent. They answered all questions (I had a lot), went through the process thoroughly and were very patient. The surgery went very well, the rehab with their physical therapist went smoothly and recovery was so much better than I expected (still hurt, LOL). Ten months later, I am confident in everything they did. Almost all of the staff were very pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable and great. We only had one negative experience and it was the financial woman (a combination of them filing claims incorrectly and my insurance not wanting to cooperate at first). Aside from her, everyone else was wonderful. Despite that minor negative experience, I would highly recommend TOI and Dr. Touissant if you need orthopedic surgery. There wasn't a lot of reviews before my surgery and I was worried, so I hope this may help bring some confidence for others to make a decision. read more

I am taking away a star for this location because they have slipped a bit in scheduling. This was not a last minute appointment & is not late in the day. We arrived 30 minutes early, as requested by the receptionist when we made the appointment last week. After filling out the paperwork, we waited for our appointment time, which came & went. After 30 more minutes (total 1 hr wait to this point), we were escorted back to the room & the nurse took some background information. Another 45 minutes of waiting has passed and the doctor has yet to walk in. (This is 1 hr 45 minutes and counting...) Now I know doctors charge extensively for their time... what I'd like is a reduction in my bill for using MY time, since I now have to rearrange my other appointments due to the unexpected wait. Murphy's Law, of course, as I was typing the doc came in. He was very thorough & helpful. Told us to set up MRI & follow up. The scheduling process is somewhat disjointed because you go to a different desk to schedule MRI & then go back to doc's receptionist to schedule the follow-up. read more

This is for Dr. Timothy Lane only. I have never left a review for a Doctor but I guess there is a first time for everything. I went to The orthopedic Institute today to see Dr. Lane for a second opinion on my knee. In the past I have seen two other doctors (Sharkey and Pritt) in this office and had excellent and timely care with them so I was expecting a similar experience with Dr. Lane. I cannot attest to his knowledge or advice. No one came in to explain why the doctor was so far behind and I had other things I'd rather do then sit longer waiting for a doctor who viewed his time worth more than mine. While I was waiting I began to notice some things that disturbed me as a patient and a retired nurse. The room I was in bad need of a thorough cleaning. The floors were very dirty with grime in between the tiles and in the corners. It was apparent that someone had sat on the exam couch (paper was wrinkled) and it had not been changed. With the flu and Coronavirus rampant, cleanliness should be top on the list for any doctors office. The medical assistant or nurse who took my blood pressure and temperature did not wash her hands before toughing me and I find that truly disturbing as all health professionals should know that the best way to prevent the spread of communicable illnesses is proper hand washing. I probably would have noticed more but after an hour and a half, I got up and left without seeing the doctor. If this were the only game in town I probably would have stayed, but it isn't and UF Ortho doesn't make you wait. read more

Stay away from Dr.Lowell's office in Ocala, if you are being sent there for a work related injury. His office is the closest for any workers compensation injuries to Gainesville. This will be the first choice for where Worker's Comp will send you if you live in Gainesville. My first visit lasted about 3 minutes. He said he reviewed my MRI and nothing at all showed up. What he didn't know was 2 years ago i went to the TOI in Gainesville and they found i had 4 herniated discs. Although the herniated disc's had nothing to do with my injury, he said there was "nothing at all" on my MRI. Once i told him about a past issue i had, he looked at my MRI again and said "OHHH!! You are right you do have herniated discs" Then he said " There is nothing i can do for you and im going to send you to physical therapy" and the appointment was over. How could he miss something as noticeable as 4 herniated discs??? He didn't miss it , he never looked to begin with. Since it was a work related injury his job is to send you back to work. He works for Worker's Comp, not for you!!!! I had to wait in pain for 6 weeks before i got into PT because he never sent my referral to Worker's Comp. I had to call after 2 weeks and ask what was going on and it still took them another 3-4 weeks to get my referral in. I went to PT and it seemed to help with my injury. The more i went the better it got, but i only got 7 visits before i had to go back to Dr.Lowell's office. I went back still in pain, not as bad as it was but PT was seeming to help. Since i was on Worker's Comp i had to go see Dr.Lowell in person for my visit, another hour drive. When i went Dr.Lowell was not even there and i had to see a assistant named Nancy Andrejack. First she asked me if my injury occurred on 12/16/2021. I said No!! and she argued with me about it. That date has not even come around yet, how can my injury happen in the future??? It wasn't even close to the date of my injury. Also she was dressed as if she walked right off the street, nothing professional at all. Ripped jeans, dirty flannel shirt and old UGG style boots that weren't even tied. She came in with an attitude from the beginning. So she asked what PT said and i told her they wanted me to continue to go for 4-12 weeks. She said "Why do you need PT there is nothing wrong with you." Then she said " Im going to send you to 2 more weeks of PT" I said " That is just 4 visits and it is seeming to help with the pain i have, can i get more than 4 appt's?" -- Mind you this is 4 months after my initial injury-- Then ,HERE IT COMES--- She said" ill send you for 2 weeks to PT, come back to see us in 3 weeks and if you are not better by then i suggest you find a new job!!!" She was so rude and disrespectful, my jaw was on the floor. I got up and left right then. I stopped by the front desk and told the people who schedule appt's that i am supposed to come back in 3 weeks and to schedule me for anything they have in 3 weeks and just email me the appt and that i did not want to to be there any longer and left. 3 days later i get a call from my job and they told me this Nancy person, sent me back to work full duty with no PT at all. I called their office and said there was a mistake and that she said i was getting 2 more weeks of PT and they said " That's not what she wrote in the paper work and i cant PROVE she told me that !!" I couldn't believe it, i was shocked. So im back to work still hurting and struggling to do my job, no PT at all, but i have scheduled an appt with another doctor. Stay far away from this practice. It's all a scam !! If he cant cut on you he wants nothing to do with you and he will send you to his INCOMPETENT, IGNORANT assistant. His goal is to send you back to work to make Worker's Comp happy. I called today asking to see a Doctor for low back back at the Orthopedic Institute. I was told of them having a walk-in express center in city of Alachua. I asked if they accepted Medicare and they said yes. I drove 25 miles to the Ortho express for the Orthopedic Institute. The receptionist was polite but told me Dr Candless has a rule not to treat back pain if patient is older than 59. I am 67. I was so discouraged and cried when I left. March 2018 I was in an auto accident and was in severe neck and back pain. I was in and out of my doctors/ER. I had all I could take til I fell for the last time, and was in the worst pain yet. I had my PCP finally refer me to O. I. In Gainesville to see Dr. Stevenson. She had not referred me to him; but a health care nurse I knew recommended him to me; and said, he was the best in neck and back surgeries. So I went. The whole team, and I do mean team; we're not only friendly but very attentive to my needs. They set everything up from MRI's to CTscans, down to the neck surgery and after care. I was in pretty bad shape according to what Dr Stevenson said and showed me. It was only going to get much worse. So I had my neck surgery this past March and to this date I feel no pain in my neck nor in my lower back. I may have a little more hardware than I'd like but I don't have to take any pain meds whatsoever praise God! I've had surgeries before; but this was the best team I have ever worked with to get me back on my feet in no time! Thank you for your great work and care for your pt. " Dr. Parr is the Medicine of the Past. " ( First Posted 2014 ) The Orthopedic Institute is a large facility with a great number of doctors, some good, some bad. This review will be based on one of their doctors by the name of Dr. Philip Parr, and as you can tell from the star above, he's one of the bad. Though there is another review from about a year ago saying good things about Dr Parr, my experience was not nearly positive in an capacity and for VERY specific reasons that I have listed below The reason for my visit to see Dr. Parr, was because of a long standing issue with a injury under my shoulder blade. It was about 3 years earlier that I was hit hard with a bit of re-bar there and it had been hurting off and on (sometimes pretty bad) since that time. I explained this in an extremely clear and concise way to Dr Parr, yet he said that that was most likely not the case "because it would have healed over 3 years" (yes, this is a quote from him). His diagnosis was then that I had "Likely forgotten" over these 3 years about exactly what had happened and that instead I most certainly had issues in my neck and that that was causing the problem. After arguing with him about my memory and telling him that I'm pretty sure I remember where I got hurt (yeah, that is how the conversation went with him. . . ) I left without any further attempts by Dr Parr to try and understand what I was saying or without offering any options to try to learn what damage the area might have sustained. I don't doubt that under ideal circumstances or if you fall into what it says in the book, that Dr Parr will be right there with the right answers, but what makes a good doctor is the ability to listen, adapt, and to offer specific solutions, and Dr Parr simply is not able to do these things. ( UPDATE 2016 Summer ) After having such a awful experience with Dr. Parr, I unnecessarily dealt with severe pain for another 2 years before again seeking help. Thankfully a friend kept insisting that I should at least go in to see his guy at "Chiropractic Solutions of Gainesville". Well after 6 months of listening to him tell me this (btw the very reason he lives in Gainesville is because of Dr. Rudolph there), I finally decided to make an appt. Upon arriving there, I was scared to death . . . the area hurt, and anyone touching it always made it worse. Well Dr. Rudolph was so just kind and understanding, he started off super gently, and within less than 5 minutes identified the problem, I had a number of rib ends out of place. That very appt he started working on them, and within 15m he had reduced the pain by 40%. After 2 more visits within the next few weeks my pain was down to 10-15%. Now my reason for this update can be summed up with this phrase " Dr. Parr is stuck in the past, like the 40 years ago past " 40 years ago people didn't completely understand bones, how they align, and exactly what that role can have in pain. But you know what, 40 years ago people didn't have access to corrective eye surgery, or things like contact lenses, your only option was glasses. So whatever you might think about an optometrist that insists you HAVE to wear glasses, and knows nothing or eye surgery and contacts, this is Dr Parr when it comes to orthopaedics. I suffered for 2 years cause "Dr" Parr knows NOTHING of a exact part of medicine that runs parallel to his. . . Chiropractics. Even with x-rays he missed something that took someone without x-rays less than 5 minutes to diagnose. Had he suggested I see a chiropractor I would have done so, but instead he decided to insult my memory and argue with me. To sum this review up, " Dr. Parr is Medicine of the Past. I simply cannot believe the narcissistic remarks made against this facility by people! I had a chronic problem with my Achilles Tendon and Dr. Toussant performed wonderful surgery on me. His staff are all upbeat and responsive, know me by name, know my situation and are very responsive. And I have never had to wait to be seen. Everybody from the front Receptionist to Taylor, Dr. Toussant's P.A. are the best; and Joyce, my PT Guru is awesome. Disregard all these "pity parties"; The Orthopedic Institute is the best! I had both my knees done by Shands, and Dr. Moser there is a Rock Star; but their Ankle guy was arrogant and would not listen to my self-evaluation. I had back surgery in 2014 and was very happy with my doctor-- Dr. Trimble. But he has a different PA and she's terrible. She promised something she shouldn't have, and instead of contacting me directly to rectify it, she enlisted a med tech and a receptionist to discuss changes in my care plan. When she finally contacted me directly, she was rude and nasty. I will not use the Orthopedic Institute ever because of this lady. And I've used them consistently for years. Dr.Mark Ellen A+++! is a top-flight clinician with a vast amount of experience. I took an unfortunate fall, I was worked in to the clinic today and handled with the utmost care! Dr. Mark Ellen administered my first Cortizone injection in the absolute most stealth way possible; I couldn't believe it was actually over, Felt barely a pinch!!! he gave me clear follow up directions answered every question and took a generous amount of time making sure I understood how to proceed... I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Ellen and the orthopedic instituteA++++++! I had a great experience with Dr. Parr today. I did wait a very long time but I scheduled the same day I was seen due to being in pain so the wait was understandable. I believe I also waited because Dr. Parr is old school and takes his time. I felt he was knowledgable, validated my concerns, and provided an accurate assessment and treatment. He explained the nature of my pain and even made suggested modifications in my workout routine that will likely help. After reading the other reviews while I waited I was skeptical. My 15 year old son had serious shoulder injuries from a dirt bike accident and from playing high school baseball. We was seen by Dr.Kim at the local Orthopedic Institute in Lady Lake. He referred us to Dr. Pritt in Gainesville. Dr.Pritt suggested we do Bankart repair on both shoulders. My son had his left shoulder done in June 2018 (bankart repair) first. Then we went back 3 months later in Sept 2018 to do the right shoulder (bankart repair). Dr.Pritt had very good bedside manners. He came in after the surgery and explained how things went and gave us pictures. The nurses were kind and compassionate. On November 10th my son's left shoulder popped out of place. When he sat up to adjust himself it popped back into place. We called his office immediately and left a voice mail. It being a Saturday we knew we would have to wait till Monday for a call back. No worries. My son was feeling pain and discomfort over the weekend, so by Sunday morning we were at the hospital getting x-rays. The x-ray reveled the shoulder was in socket and there was fluid around the bone. My son kept his a sling on and iced it. We quickly got an appointment with Dr. Kim at the Lady Lake office. He looked at the x-rays and said he would call Dr. Pritt and get his opinion and see what he wanted to do. Dr.Kim's office assistant called and said Dr.Pritt requested an MRI. We did it as soon as insurance approved it. MRI was done on November 12th. We waited for a call back. We still have not got the results of the MRI and its November 19th. Still leaving numerous messages, even contacting office manager got us nowhere. Very disappointed that Dr.Pritt or Dr. Kim could not call us with results. As parents its difficult to watch your son have to put his dreams on hold. High school baseball and riding dirt bikes have been my son's passion. He does well in school and looks forward to being active and the last year has been very difficult for us all. His shoulder falling out of place again and no answers are even more difficult and disturbing. All we wanted was the results to understand what was going on! Making us wait 16 days is sad and unprofessional on Dr.Pritt and Dr.Kim part. I hope and pray this never happens to another family! I was a patient of Dr Borkowski for several years. He was polite and without long waits to see him. I have severe neuropathy in both feet and was prescribed several non opiate but controlled medications that kept me as comfortable as possible. I'm also dealing with cancer. I called for the necessary appointment to see him for refills and Boom , he's no longer employed there. I would have much appreciated a little warning that my refills were not going to be possible as the receptionist said " the Orthopaedic institute no longer employs neurologists. None ! Now I'm scrambling to find a doctor to refill prescriptions during an virus outbreak worldwide . Without refills to controlled drugs I can detox and die ! I made an appointment and received an email stating that I must wear a face mask covering my mouth and nose during my entire visit. However, I observed several patients without masks inside the building. In addition, I saw staff at the front desk with the mask covering only the mouth, others had the mask hanging on the ear. I think that COVID-19 is a serious issue, and a clinic should be more responsible for making sure that all their employees are taken the mandatory preventions against COVID-19. I don't normally spend much time writing reviews. However, I felt compelled to add my review after reading recent negative reviews that were either directed at a specific physician or included medical condition treatment that was not specific to orthopaedics. One was not even written in commonly accepted English text. Another references practice parameters from 40 years ago without apparent knowledge of what that means. Since inception, this group of physicians has always provided the highest level of patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care. Highly experienced physicians review and triage every new case to ensure the highest and best level of care for each individual. There are specialists in multiple orthopaedic disciplines specifically to provide a personalized care plan for each patient. If you have to wait a little longer than planned one visit, consider that the prior patient might have required that time. As well, you will be given that same consideration, if necessary. I would probably not be walking if it were not for intervention and treatment 40 years ago and today. As I have aged, my doctors have provided the appropriate care to correlate with my personal status. The group is definitely a five-star performer! I was met by a doctor whom was not happy about the vaccine and asked did I have mine! then the whole appointment was about me getting VACCINATED and how he had to flee his home state because of mandates and had to leave his family,how he knows a patient who has brain swelling due to the vaccine this went on and on I finally asked him if he would do a xray he said no I said oral steroids he said no he said I told you your problem is that shot it's attacking your body and this is your problem so if you had a vaccine, beware of certain doctor there because he is very angry about those who got VACCINATED and will not treat you! He took my insurance though just when he gets you back there he ridiculous you and refuses to help you!I am so afraid now of people like him you never know what could happen when you tell someone you have been VACCINATED ! i walked away and had to go to another doctor i could hardly walk! read more
