Femur surgery by foot & ankle surgeon. Bad outcome. After three days waiting in Ottawa Civic room713 my distal femur fracture internal fixation surgery was done by Drs. Lalonde and Muellenkamp. Both are foot and ankle speciaists. NOT knee surgeons. It did not go well. My result is a large hard lump on the outside of my right knee. I am told this is a misplaced/displaced screw from the surgery. An entirely depressing outcome. His solution? Open the site again and put the hardware back where it should be. Why was this not done initially? No answer. I would never, ever recommend Dr. Lalonde for any procedure. This is the worst of Canadian 'health' care. I am off to Toronto at my expense to have this mess fixed correctly. A similar situation happened twelve years ago also at the Civic when Dr. Philippe Phan, spinal surgeon, operated on my left wrist and did not inform me pins had bern inserted. I could not flex my wrist so I travelled from Ottawa to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto to have the wrist re-opened and the pins removed. Wrist then worked fine. My partner stayed at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus form about 10 days. The doctors and most of the nurses and PCAs were amazing! They were very positive and helpful. But, there was one PCA on at night who when the call bell was pushed, she would come in and look at us. She would not ask what was needed, just look at us. Then, when we would say that my partner needed assistance for the toilet, the PCA would roll her eyes, not say a word and leave the room. She would not say if she was coming back, or what she was doing. She would then come back with wipes and gloves, etc. and then just grunt instructions, or assume we knew what to do. It was very frustrating and dehumanizing. My partner was treated as though she was a problem for asking for help. I would go looking for help in the evening if I was there late, and the PCA would be playing on her phone sitting in the hall. Almost every other PCA was so good and treated my partner with respect. I will give three stars because of the fast and decisive treatment of the paramedics, which probably saved my son's life.. They advised me he go to emerg asap due to Oxygen levels becoming dangerously low, his seizure and vomiting and complaints by my son of feeling dizzy. Fast forward to diagnostics about 3 hours later. They found pnemonia both lungs, aspiration and his blood levels and bloodwork were off the chart for abnormal. I highly commend diagnostics in their finding out immediately and caring for my son. However, the RN's who attended on day and night shift, were clearly looking annoyed because of my son's inability to communicate and when I asked for clarification on two concerns I had for him. A urinal was promptly placed on his table and specimen bottle, telling him to urinate. My son had not drank or eaten in 9 hours by that time, he was not able to unrinate. I waited 4 hours for the physicians to determine how to adjust his 4 seizure medications, and I was grateful they took the time to check carefully into this. So like I said, diagnostics and the neurologist were five star in treatment. Nothing was offered for my son to eat or drink as of 8 that night. When my son was given the prescriptions and told he was able to leave, they placed all paperwork on the table and walked away. I was not even offered a wheelchair to bring my son to the main doors so we could get a cab. I am a 64 year old woman, my son is 27 years old special needs with autism and epilepsy and a diagnosis of aspiration pnemonia. Given the circumstances, I honestsly feel the nurses on duty for my son could have shown a little more understanding and less annoyance, considering I barely bothered them and there were a lot of other patients ringing the bells non stop. I did not bother anybody once. I am a Registered Practical Nurse so I get the stress on working Christmas Eve. But, this treatment was clearly unethical, particularly since I had to practically carry my 256 pound son to the emergency doors because not one staff cared enough to bring me a wheelchair to help my son as we left. I would not recommend this hospital to my worst enemy. read more

this hospital are very good . i got my whole body swelling and can not eat anything and Dr Nicholas preobrazenski and Dr Rajiv Stephen Thavanthan are very response and knowledgeable to me they found right for me ,but they stiil referred me to a specialist to help me urgently to Dr Michael Quon and Dr Soroush Rouhani they cheak again than they are very professional and very nice to me .they throught i have proplem with kindy than they sent me to 1967 river side hospital right way and i saw amazing Dr Peter Magner and Dr Gregory Hundemer and so on than just live in hospital about 4 days i can eat food now and my Enlish is not good ,but they also foun one Dr help me . so i am very happy with this hospital they have many professional Dr and very response nurs to me so i want to say thank you so so much Ottawa hospital !!! you are best hospital!! read more

don't ever bring a loved one to this establishment it's absolutely pathetIc that they consider themselves a great hospital. after my latest experience having a relative spend a week admitted in that place and died and not one member of staff not one had the decency to tell us what happened and the run around to get health records it's criminal and I would never ever recommend the Ottawa hospital they wanted to put a product in the person I'm talking about that was pulled from the clinical trials due to its death rate which is available to the public it clearly shows in the data in the studies in the trials that it had over a 50 percent death rate and the doctor didn't have a clue. how is it I know more than the doctor. it's called mal practice. You guys need to replace the entire emergency stafff. Everytime I go this hospital in pain the nurses are rude to me and keep dismissing my symptoms and they ignore me. we are told to go er if you have chest pains right? then why did a nurse tell me that I look fine what am I supposed cry and scream? you make us wait for hours and not help us when we are in pain. I am a black woman this is happens to us alot and it's very dang. why become a nurse if you wont show us empathy and kindness? I am in the Ottawa General rehab center. They are excellent in getting me back on my feet. however part of getting stronger is the food I eat. I have come to expect that hospital food is what it is but for the last 2 days my dinner has arrived at 4:40 PM. Last week it was at least 5 PM which is also ridiculous. Who eats their dinner at that time. the answer seems to be " well we can reheat it". great so mediocre food put in the microwave. yummy NOT. that also means that there are 15 hours between dinner and breakfast. not great for blood sugar issues. also half of the food on the menu they bring with the meal is missing or the cutlery is missing or some other problem. I understand that during the day food services needs to be scheduled around appointment times. But there are no Physio or other such appointments in general, between 5 and 6. I am writing this in the hopes that I get someone's attention. When I ask my nurse it appears that she can not influence food services. So who can!? All the Hospitals in Ottawa the General, Civic are the two largest ones. So many doctors refuse to work in them. They want 9 to 5 lives and families. EVERYONE WHO VOTED FOR PREMIERE FORD AND JUSTIN TRUDEAU are to blame for the latest mess. The QCH, Montfort the smaller ones are just as bad. If you are not already bleeding out squirting into their face and projectile vomiting they all look at you like you are nuts. I believe it's the staff that happens to be on duty when you get there and the Attending head dr determines how good you will be treated.. I've had horrible experiences at the Civic where I was sick and they felt otherwise because My symptoms in their eyes were not drastic enough. sigh. I've waited over 12 hours just to be seen 4 days waiting in obs for a bed. and even head pain is not considered serious unless you are staggering and can't see and the, at the General, Civic, and worse at the QCH. I've only ever had a day procedure at the Montfort. The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, The Canadian and Ontario Governments will only allow so many Doctors to practice in Ontario. It's all about $$ Employees and patients are taking their frustrations out on each other because of greedy people of the world are dictating what should be more important PROFITS! Everyone wants lower property taxes, well, we all have to pay into our Health Care via our TAXES it's not free! Parking is a nightmare (even with a 5 level parking garage and separate staff parking), it could take you at least 10 minutes to find a parking spot. If you can, your better off taking a taxi/uber here. There is also public transportation with a bus shelter right in front of the hospital. Elevators are slow as well, at all hours of the day, but I guess what do you expect when its the biggest and busiest hospital in Ottawa. With all that being said, the staff here are awesome. I was late for my appointment and forgot my health card and all my ID at home...lets just say it was a rough morning. The staff worked with me and were so wonderful with registering me into the hospital so that I did not have to pay any fees or reschedule my appointment. The doctors and nurses that I have met have all been fabulous and make you feel super comfortable and relaxed. This is a huge hospital, so it can get pretty intimidating. There is a Tim Hortons that's open 7am-9m and Second Cup on site that runs 24/7 in the main lobby along with a gift shop. read more

The Ottawa Hospital was where I had the worst experience of my life, and I couldn't be more thankful. A trip to the emergency room 6 months into pregnancy with high blood pressure had me admitted almost immediately. I think it helped that I had called Telehealth prior to arriving, but still- the speed with which they attended to me was impressive. I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and had a hard time processing what was happening. Over the next week, I was taken care of by a wonderful staff of caring and attentive nurses. They kept me calm, they reassured me, and they held my hand through the worst week I have ever experienced. The team of nurses I was fortunate enough to have by my side had amazing bedside manners, were sympathetic and knowledgable, and able to answer all of my many, many questions. If I ever am in a similar situation again, I hope to have such a great staff by my side. The hospital food is what you can expect in pretty much any hospital- bland and lacklustre, but it's not bad. They do have a few options such as Tim Hortons and Second Cup if you want something as a guest rather than a patient. Parking can be a bit tricky to find at times, but you can usually have luck on the street, or they do have paid parking available. While I am not a fan of hospitals, this is my hospital of choice here in Ottawa. read more

I came here in August 2023. First, I used the bathroom located on the Hospital Direction's hallway next to the cafeteria. No soap in either one dispenser. I make my way to the cafeteria with dirty hands. No sanitizing gel inside the first dispenser I found. make my way to a second one. Finally was able to squirt some sanitizing gel out of it. I still had time to kill and decided to sit at a table at the cafeteria. All tables and chairs were filthy. I wouldn't want myself or a loved one ending up here. Do not go to the edp program. It is an underfunded weight gain program and the edp doesn't even have its own unit, its in the psych unit. I was not respected at all and as a vegetarian of 5+ years they didn't respect my values. They also don't measure out the quantity of nutritional supplement that you need for the foods that you weren't able to complete. You basically have to be like 95% recovered to be in this program and if not, tough luck. There's no help or hope. 100% Don't reccomend it. This program is sadly the only program for adults and it NEEDS MASSIVE improvements. read more

Writing this from the perspective of a medic who routinely brings pts to this hospital. I've known a long time the issues in healthcare, and aside from the wait times being 8h+ long (has been an issue for years), my father who is a healthy man came in with severe 10/10 head and neck pain while standing or sitting but could only be relieved when he lies down. Went in friday night, and was never given a bed when he was finally seen by the doctor, was told he was not allowed to lie on the ground to minimize his pain but had to wait in a chair the entire night. When he saw the doctor they gave him nothing but advil for pain and was discharged with the diagnosis of a HEADACHE (FYI headache is a symptom and not a diagnosis). My father went home where he worsened for 2 days, unable to sit up or stand for longer than 10 seconds without these shooting pains. Sunday his symptoms worsened to numbness in his toes, light sensitivity, eye and ear pressure, and shooting pain down his back. Let's just say I've seen my dad cry twice in my life, this being one. Brought him to the queensway where they did a spinal tap based on his symptoms and were basically unable to draw out any fluid because he essentially had less than nothing left in his spinal canal (CSF protects your brain and spinal cord), can be fatal if symptoms persist. Hence the sitting and standing was draining all his fluid out where the general never ever gave him a room, dismissed his symptoms and left him in a chair when they did their assessment. General sent him home and assumed it was related to a disc herniation... Don't go to this ER. I'm truly disgusted with the care he received and would not recommend this ER to anyone. read more

Never use this hospital if you want to stay healthy. I can't go into some details, but they fail at every turn. Too many bad experiences with this facility. Edit: I have a feeling there will be many edits to this post. 1) I show up for a MRI at 1am in the morning. Busy place. The staff member hands me a gown with METAL snaps. Now I know there are people there who have MRI's with metal in their bodies (rods etc); but I just finished filling out a questionnaire about metal. He hastily and nonchalantly said "ooo how did that get in this dept?", after I pointed it out to him. But wait it gets better! Im 3/4 of the way through and all of a sudden my baby finger starts vibrating. I look at my hand and I have forgotten to take off a ring that has sat on my finger for over 30 years! Oops. But it does beg the question...Why did this git not do a once over on his patient just to make sure. Maybe a cursory glance at ears and hands? 2) Called an ambulance in Dec. of 2010 experiencing heart attack symptoms. Many hours later it was established that I have another condition but not with my heart. Since they still wanted to watch me for a while, I was ignominiously dumped out of my room into a very uncomfortable chair making the pain worse. But wait it gets better! They put a shackled, stoned, yelling, freaking out prisoner complete with police officer into the room I was previously occupying. From my vantage point all I saw were legs and genitals flying all over the place. I had to ask my friend to move slightly to block said view. I was not morally offended but more enraged at a hospital who didn't even have the courtesy to close the drape let alone the door. To be continued.... Aug 6/12: Too funny. I just had an RN email me to "clarify" a few things. All she did was come across as desperate to rectify an already tarnished beyond belief reputation of our Ontario medical system. Very pathetic in that she even tried to BLAME me for forgetting my ring left on because Technician Doofus didn't do HIS job. I was so mad I didnt even spell-check my reply. On a more serious note. I find it rather pitiful that there are hospital staff out there that are still wearing those rose coloured glasses and think the majority of Ontario's population sees them as "Angels of Mercy". I would avoid these types of staff as they are the worst at seeing reality. It should be noted that my sister works at one of the campus' and I hear some pretty disgusting and apathetic stuff. _______________ And now I can continue with my last visit to the Ottawa Campus via para-medics as the formal complaints have been put in. And we are starting to be the majority in one way or another. _______________ Spent a month in the Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus). I do not suggest at any time using a "Teaching Hospital"! My first experience that stay, was a Neurosurgeon that came blustering in (after his ego of course) and 10 or so little clones/minions. He was all business and didn't even look me in the eye. The show was for his clones and not the patient. I suspect this is true of most doctors that have students following them around, having experienced this more than once. In the future I will always refuse to have them around to ensure I get one on one care and not a show for their star struck minions. I was lied to, chart notes were changed after decisions were made, promises broken, and I came away with a Morphine addiction and a smoking habit that I gave up 12 years ago. I was not cured nor helped with my problem at all. Useless tests and 2, almost 3, spinal taps were performed (all inconclusive?). But I'm saving the best for last. The evening before you are being discharged, they have someone come in to do your home pain medication plan. Nobody showed up until 11:30pm. By that point I was asleep and drugged up. I do not remember the questions, nor my answers; indeed the only thing I do remember is mentioning that he looked like a friend of mine. Supposedly this is standard practice! All I can say is WTF? Then I was dropped like a slimy worm. No follow-ups, no phone calls. My GP was left with me still in pain and no guidance or direction. For months I was on a pain management plan that was clearly inadequate and experienced the many side effects of being on so many drugs. I stopped one cold turkey as I was only suffering the side effects and not the benefits. My GP was also hesitant to change said plan as it was not him that put it in place. I don't know if this is law with narcotics or just professional ethics, but the Patient is surely not put first. read more

My review is a critique of the "Automated" parking of the Ottawa hospital, and not a review of the critical services the hospital staff provide. I hate everything about it. Granted, most people don't appreciate having to pay for parking, but it always seems to be exponentially more complicated at the General hospital. Today, my gripe is specifically targeted at the automated parking - and the lack of pay stations. I parked in the multi-level parking garage. The spots are extremely tight, and it feels like you are navigating a labryinth, in your attempt to leave/escape. Of course, I forgot to pay at an automated pay station, hence I could not leave my nightmare. The only way to pay at the gate is via credit card. If someone happens to be behind you at the exit gate, you have an interesting adventure ahead of you, getting yourself turned around. Part two of this frustrating quest involves returning to the parking garage, in a frustrating attempt to find a vacant spot. Finding a vacant spot is like finding the purple squirrel. Part three of this aggravating crusade requires finding an automated pay station. You would think there would be pay stations actually in the parking lot - that's common sense. Not at the Ottawa Hospital. You must return to the hospital and search for the white whale known as the automated pay station. Argue all you want about economic cost cutting, but the Ottawa Hospital's parking revenues in the fiscal year 2011/12 (according to the Ottawa Sun) were: $10.8 million !!!!! You would think that they could spend some sheckles on making payment for parking services easy and efficient for their clients. To add insult to injury, there are concession machines outdoors, but no machines to pay for parking - which is not exactly cheap. The rates are: $ 3.50 - 1/2 hour $13.00 - daily maximum $42.25 - Weekly pass $92.00 - Monthly pass Meter rates are $0.25 = 2.5 minutes $1.00 = 10 minutes If you are planning on using the automated pay station: 1) BRING YOUR TICKET WITH YOU!!!! 2) BRING YOUR CREDIT CARD!!! Having moved from Montreal over a year ago, I've learned to approach hospitals with trepidation. I have to say that compared to what I've experienced in the Quebec health-care system, this is a completely different experience. Staff treat you like family. I've run into one cantankerous nurse the whole time I've been here, and she wasn't even rude or uncaring, just abrupt. The nurses seem to be responsible for fewer beds than what I saw in Quebec, meaning the nurse checks on you a lot more often. The wait times are a breath of fresh air compared to what I went through in Montreal. In Montreal, going through emergency, I had seen wait times of over 24 hours before seeing a doctor. The two times I've been through emergency at the general(once for myself and once for my wife) we've been seen by a doctor in under 2 hours. My wife had a partial blockage in her intestines when we first moved to Ottawa, and she did not have a specialist here yet. The on call doctors that saw her in emergency set her up with a specialist with whom she got an appointment with in just a few weeks. They also called her at home 24 hours after she left emergency to check on how she was doing. This entire paragraph is unheard of behavior in Montreal. Now, food. It's hospital food. It's not poisonous. It contains nutrients. It may not taste good, but it gets the job done. I probably had the most tasteless soup of my life here. I'm not including the food in the rating of the hospital because it's a hospital, not a restaurant. I'm presently still here, as I bled out recently and my hemoglobin is too low to be discharged, so I reserve the right to return to this review and change it. Rating the hospital a 4 because I am no expert on medical care, and there must be room for improvement. However my experiences thus far have been shockingly better than the service I came to expect when in hospitals in Montreal. read more

The results were in as planned but have to wait for the doctor. Common sense don't you take care of the previous patient before calling new one? No brains there. And I am still waiting. read more

I must say it's normally never fun going to the hospital - but it's often that the staff and level of care that we receive in Canada isn't discussed and given the proper kuudo's either. I have a number of friends that live in the U.S. that have asked me about my thoughts on Obamacare over the last 4 years......most are against it, and they always say the level of care they receive is so much better than we would with a state run system........maybe.....but not by much for sure. sadly i have had a few friends struggle with cancer over the last few years, as most of us have a loved one that have been touched by this disease. The quality of care that my friends have received was top of the line......from nurses and doctors that were fantastic. i've personally struggled with getting to see my GP and have opted to use Apple Tree clinics with great success. thanks to all of our health care providers. 29 of 30 ps - their wifi sucks......someone do something about that please.....let's get a sponsor for it or something. read more

I was directed here after being diagnosed and had the best service I have ever had. The doctors are amazing!! They're friendly and know what they're doing! They try and help the best the can. Went to the Civic location emergency department. It was the worst 14.5 hours of my life. I arrived having had an ambulance sent to my house by a doctor I had spoken to that day who could tell I needed help. I had not slept for 3 days or eaten in 5-6 days. I wasn't given anything to eat or drink the entire time I was at the Ottawa hospital. I wasn't allowed to lay down (even though there was an empty bed)! When I finally saw the doctor after 14.5 hours I was simply sent home. No explanation. No follow up. No advice no support. At one point I locked the bathroom door and laid down on the disgusting dirty floor. I was so dizzy and disoriented I sat on the floor and a nurse told me to get up becaus, as she put it, I WAS FINE!?!? I finally couldn't take it anymore and drank as much water as I could from the tap in the bathroom (which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days!) and proceeded to throw it all up. When I told one of the nurses all she did was stare at me in anger and proceeded to completely ignore me. I learned the worst place to be when your next to death is the Ottawa Hospital Civic location. read more

After taking a friend to an appointment today I have to say that the washrooms are some of the least maintained ones I've seen in a long time! No restaurant would pass code with the filth, lack of soap, hand towels and even lack of toilet paper, that this hospitals bathrooms display. I was really disappointed that a place that supposed to address health issues is so dirty when it comes to the public bathrooms. Makes we wonder how food handling is there and all other cleanliness procedures. Just happy I live far enough away I wont' have to stay here even if I do get sick. p.s. I have been to some bad hospitals, but this by far beats them all. It actually makes the others look good. I had a personal issue and it was around 9pm, I went to the hospital to get it checked. The registration was quick, but when I got to urgent care that's where it went south. I waited about an hour to an hour and a half to get a room, and then waited another 4 hours just for a doctor to see me. By this time it was about 3:30am. I didn't leave the hospital till about 4:40am. All around just terrible service. The nurses stand around half the time just talking while there is patients to tend to. I started to experience mild symptoms so as a precaution the teachers brought us by Uber to this hospital, not being from this area we didn't know children are not treated there. We walk in to the Er and was told rudely that we had to walk next door to the children's hospital. Umm excuse me? My friend and I could go in to anaphylactic shock at any moment and you want us to walk 10 minutes to the hospital next door at 11;00 pm at night???? Absolutely insane. read more

My review concerns a call that I made to the emergency to inquire about the status of my son's health. I tried his cell but his voice mail was full. When I called around 7:30 p.m., a nurse informed me that she was the nurse looking after him, that she was not authorized to give me any information, that she could bring a telephone to him and inform him of my request and that it would be his decision as to whether or not he wanted to call me. I told her that I realized that he was an adult and that I understood but being a mother I was still worried. I thanked her and waited almost 2 1/2 hours when my son called me from his dad's cell. The nurse never brought him a phone nor did she give him my message. I do not drive nor did I have cash on me to take a taxi. I think that it was cruel on the nurse's part and yes it might be the emergency but if you are that busy, why bother to take the time to lie? read more

The staff I encountered were absolutely wonderful and treated my with respect. I had surgery in the day surgery unit and from my checking in to my leaving everything and everyone did their job to perfection. Special mention to my surgical staff of Paula, Victoria and Shawna. Post op staff of Diana, Wilma and Robyn. The best of the best. read more

I am unable to say anything positive about this hospital. I wish I could, however, my experiences have been frightening. The nursing staff in particular in Emergency are abrupt, rude, uncaring and unkind. Not at all professional. My physician recommends the Queensway Carleton for his patients. read more

I did a short contract this year at the Cancer Centre. The oncologists and doctors are fun off their feet. Some of the support staff are trittling their thumbs. Why can't the admin staff be trained to help the doctors with the papwerwork? You can tell staff are bored but do not have the medial background to do more. What' s with that? read more

My review is for the General Hospital. I have very recent experience. The nurses and technical staff are helpful, kind and considerate. My experience of the doctors is very different. They are arrogant and spiteful because I asked questions about the medications they were giving me. Before going into hospital I took no medications, in spite of my 80 years, and this seemed to upset them. I had no confidence in them. read more
