The chicken Alfredo/ chicken fried steak/ steamed vegetables are absolutely terrible. Went in today for lunch on may 9 and the pans they cooked the veggies with were dirty, also I received just the stem for cauliflower. After over five hours of driving through challenging conditions, we arrived starving and desperate for a descent meal. Unfortunately, we also left this restaurant far from satisfied. I want to preface this interview by the fact that I am intolerant to gluten and this severely limits what I was able to order. The menu had very few options for me, which was a pretty big disappointment. I settled on the salmon and vegetables and was served a small overcooked slab of fish with some bland vegetables. The meal is supposed to include bread, but I was declined when I requested a substitution. Overall the meal was disappointing and I left still hungry. Despite the quality of the food, this restaurant has a fine ambiance and good service. The meals that my campions ordered looked great. It's not ideal for people who have dietary retractions or aren't craving a sandwich, burger, or pizza. The prices are reasonable if not on the more expensive side. read more

I don't like leaving negative reviews but it must be done. Arrived hangry after a long unexpected detour through John Day with low expectations yet they were still not met. I got the salmon and vegetables which sounded nice at the time but I was indeed very dissatisfied when I received a tiny slab of freezer salmon and the most bland steamed vegetables ever. Honestly why even offer it if it sucks that bad. My group seemed to have slightly better luck on their decisions, but there also weren't many options for my dear friend who is unfortunately gluten free. Our server wasn't entirely attentive despite a nearly empty restaurant. This contrasts with the lovely ambience, it felt like a cozy lodge. Walked over from the BW motel. They have nice size restaurant and a separate pub. Chose the pub. Several booths. Couple TVs and chose the bar. My server was Kaylee. Top notch customer service. Kitchen was closing at 9pm so quickly placed order for personal size Hawaiian pizza. Perfect size. Perfectly cooked. And nicely portioned with pineapple cheese canadian bacon. Tasted great. I ordered a chicken breast burger & was asked if I wanted grilled or crispy. I ordered crispy. It's on the menu as a "breaded chicken breast". Unfortunately to my disappointment it was not a chicken breast. As others have stated, service could be better. I came thru once with a large group of coworkers, with a reservation. The staff seemed annoyed at us and less then welcoming, despite the reservation. I'm from Portland so this was our first trip. I felt bad for our server lol because one of our friends just happen to be the most difficult person when ordering. The server was upfront with "Gluten Free." She had said the item itself is gluten free but it will be contaminated with whatever is cooked/ prepared in that area! Usually would get at least a three star. Love their GF pizza but their salads have really gone downhill! My husbands salad had next to no hazelnuts on it, and when he politely asked the server if the salad came with hazelnuts she rudely responded, "they're on there." This is the extent of the bacon on their chicken salad with bacon...about one piece! I also asked for no Cuban bread because I don't like it. When I asked her for critics she said since you didn't order bread I assumed you didn't want any croutons. Never brought me any crotons. I guess when you only have a few restaurants in this tiny town you don't have to try as hard? Usually staff and food is pretty good but not this time. Stopped here for a quick pit stop during our trip to Enterprise. The Restaurant not only has a sit down dining area but a gift shop and an ice cream shop inside too . The place is really big with a lot of seating and multiple sections .The place was empty and we were immediately attended, but soon people started trickling in and this felt like a spot really popular with the locals . There was just one girl working all the tables and Man was she efficient ! Attending almost 6-8 tables and checking up on everyone frequently We ordered the Chicken Fried steak and the beef sandwich and both menu items very delicious . The chicken fried steak comes with mashed potatoes and some boiled veggies and was big enough for two of us . We also ordered the Chocolate Peanut butter pie and loved it . Great food, outstanding service and an amazing value! I enjoyed one of the best Rib Eye steaks I have had in years. I certainly wasn't expecting excellence but it definitely was just that! They offer it as a 16oz cut but it seemed bigger. It was cooked perfectly and was tender and very flavourful! What a treat! Our table also ordered a pizza (very good) and a Cobb Salad that was huge. It a wonderful place everyone to visit******* My family and I have tried to be open and give the local businesses patronage. We decided last night to try out the take out from Th Outpost. In the past the customer service is very "hit and miss" at The Outpost. There are wonderful servers and bartenders that do work there. However, they seem to keep those who have awful customer service as well. After coming home with our take out, right away, the food was cold. We think "ok we can always reheat it" secondly, when my husband opens his French dip and then the au jus we were terrible disappointed. There was approximately 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of au jus for him to dip his French dip in. I called and voiced my concern to the restaurant immediately but was told to speak with Heidi the next day. The next day I came and asked for Heidi and the experience was nothing less than horrendously unprofessional behavior on her part. This is now the third time I have witnessed this "manager" degrade and be flat out rude to people with food allergies, asking for an extra napkin etc. We are Grant County. In order for us to thrive we need to be kind AND professional to everyone that patronizes our businesses. read more

The Outpost was somewhat crowded on June 14, due to the '62 Days in Canyon City. But we waited over an hour to order and have dinner served that evening. The next morning, we went there to get breakfast. The booth was so tight we could not fit in. We asked to move to another booth. Stopped in after a hard morning of hiking through the woods in the rain. The hot chocolate was great, loaded with whipped cream. I ordered the Pulled Pork Skillet. Superb! My fella ordered the Chicken Fried Steak. He thought it was fantastic! We tried the other breakfast place in town, the morning before, while it was acceptable, the food was not as tasty. The Outpost managed to fit our large group of 9 in without a wait, though they were pretty busy. Our drink, appetizer, and entree orders were all taken quickly. Once we got our food (in a very reasonable amount of time for such a huge group!), we did end up waiting a while for our checks, but that's due in part due to the restaurant being a little short staffed. I don't fault our server because it wasn't her fault that we came in as huge group or that they seemed to be slammed this particular day. I'd take away one star but I'm not a petty monster and I know businesses are struggling still right now, but I will say this in critique: I ordered a sandwich wrap and the chicken was really dry, and the fry sauce for the sweet potato fries was sickeningly sweet. I preferred using ranch instead. I was told the fry sauce is hugely popular, so maybe I'm the odd one out, but another couple of members from our group didn't really like it, either. With that said, the chicken wrap was very yummy overall, with fresh ingredients. We also ordered fried pickles for a starter, and I thought they were great. The pickles come in whole spears, not slices, which was new for me. Overall a good experience! read more

Great service! And the food is to die for I got the French dip and it was actually my first time having one. The roast beef was literal roast not some deli meat you can taste the slow cook and the dip was amazing too. Actually have great cocktails I honestly didn't expect that. The Outpost gets one extra star for 1) offering a personal size (8 inch) pizza, 2) offering a pesto pizza (chicken, tomato, mushroom and onion), and 3) being one of the only restaurants open in John Day on a Sunday evening. They offer a decent selection of beer on tap, including Terminal Gravity IPA, a personal fave. Other customers' burgers looked good and next time through John Day, I may have to go that route. Only problems were that they were a little overwhelmed by pizza take-out orders, which caused some chaos and back-ups in the kitchen. I did not notice any excessive wait, but my pizza came without my salad, and i had to reorder it. Certainly not a spoiler. I'll be back. read more

My wife and I decided to go to the outpost for lunch. We were seated quickly and then we sat there for about 10 mins with no contact with anyone. No drink orders no starter orders? Nothing. There was maybe 4 or five tables With customers all at different stages of there meal. Not too busy. We looked at our menu decided what we wanted, sat and chatted for a few minutes starting to realize we still hadn't seen a server at all. I headed toward the front counter to ask the hostess if our server knew we were there. While waiting at the counter our server finally showed up at the table. With a what the hell do you want attitude took our order and showed us a magic trick by disappearing again. She appears again bringing our drinks! One... at... a... time....then the wait for the food........... finally we said screw it and decided to leave and go elsewhere I went to the counter told the server we were leaving and like the rest of the show magically our food was ready! I looked at my wife and said do you want to wait the foods ready. She agreed to stay. went to sit and they brought out our food in takeaway containers. I grabbed the food and said to my wife let's go I went to pay for our food the manager maybe even the owner was standing right behind her counting some money. I said something about the service and she just stood there counting her money didn't even turn around. So yea you want nice atmosphere, decent food and terrible service.
