Life moves in. We were sure we had stopped here in Canyon City, but something was different. It's the Squeeze-in, with new paint and theme. We added an egg to the Special. We split meals. Squeeze-In is your typical, small town cafe with with a menu identical to what you'd expect in a restaurant like this. We arrived just after opening at 7:00am Saturday morning. I started my day with the Eggs Benedict (English muffin, two poached eggs, and ham covered in hollandaise sauce and served with hash browns, $10.50). I don't usually order eggs benedict but on this particular rainy morning in John Day it was just what I needed. It filled me up for my entire 6 mile hike in the cold and snow. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was very fresh, definitely made that morning. I thought my English muffin was a little overheated, it was chewy in the edges but still edible. My hash browns could have used a couple more minutes on the grill but again, good enough to eat! My husband kept it simple by ordering f the Classic (two eggs cooked any style, served with choice of bacon, sausage, polish or turkey sausage, hash browns and toast, $11.00). He enjoyed his breakfast as well. Eggs were a little overcooked but nothing a little maple syrup couldn't fix! I loved the fact that he got 4 sausage links instead of the usual two that most cafes I've been to serve. Definitely a great value! My favorite thing about this little establishments is the vibe between the service and the regular patrons. Call me a creep, but I love to people watch and listen about what others are talking about. You can tell nearly everyone coming in is a regular by the conversations. I think that even though all these cafes are very similar, they all have their own personality that differentiates them from one another, and I'm totally here for it. read more

Cold beer. Nice deck. Good and friendly service. Out of several beers just before the July 4th holiday ... is a problem. Bacon cheeseburger arrived without bacon. This entire add is wrong, the location is wrong, and there's no outdoor pet friendly area, and they're open from early morning until 8pm every day. They also are right next door to a park, so that makes having a small park picnic lunch amazing. Shawn is the owner, and she does a lot of great work with the community. To helping the fire crews, providing breakfast for the parades, and ALWAYS having a discount for the MILITARY PEOPLE. She goes above and beyond to help people, and she is also one of the board members of the only Animal Nonprofit Organization in our county. So YELP needs to fix this posting, because none of the information provided by Yelp is right? read more

The wife was really craving waffles so we decided to add a breakfast stop into our crunched morning before heading out of town. The seating was seat yourself and the waitress was fairly prompt to our table. The food was mediocre. The biggest disappointment was you could tell the timing on the food was off because aside from the chicken fried steak and the omelette the rest of the food was cold. I had the breakfast burrito and side of hash browns with a side of gravy. The burrito was smaller than I expected, but tasted very good. The Hash browns were more than half a plate and typical hash browns. Added with the sausage country gravy, that was amazing. The wife had pancakes that were also very good. She added a side of Hash browns that she could not finish, it was a lot. The service was also perfect. Checked on us occasionally, but also let us enjoy the area and our food. We were traveling from Pendleton to Frenchglen, and hit this place up right before dinner. All we wanted was a quick roadside diner to grab a late lunch, but we got way more than we bargained for here! Since we had the pups with us, we sat out on the sundeck out back. It's a great layout, with plenty of sun umbrellas over the tables, and a water station for visiting pets. They were happy to see that we brought our furry friends along for the visit! The food was fantastic! I ordered the Taco Salad, and found it to be overflowing with deliciousness - they recommended the Thousand Island dressing, which was an excellent choice. The most surprising thing? Their coffee was FANTASTIC!!! Being from Seattle, I tend to be a bit of a coffee snob, enjoying mine hot & dark, and it was better than most coffee shops I've ever visited; rich & aromatic! My wife's iced tea was excellent as well. The server checked on us often, to make certain everything was to our expectations. We ended up enjoying the deck for over an hour, watched a deer saunter past, much to the delight of my little yapper. This place is very convenient to get to; the parking might be a bit tight out front, but there's plenty of room around on the side. For a place to stop off on your way through town, this is it! So there we were, fresh off a two day stay at Fall Mountain Lookout -- up at 6000 feet (plus another 20 or so walking up the steps to the lookout), not a person around, in essence camping under cover. (Ok that's a total lie, the lookout has electricity so our camping meals were breakfast quiche, meatball sammies and General Tso's chicken... how's that for roughin' it?) We rolled into John Day on the way home, looking for breakfast. I admit, I was lured by the nasty but comfortable familiarity of McDonalds, which was our destination. We passed the Squeeze In and were struck by their banner that said Breakfast Buffet. I'm a BIG fan of breakfast buffets because while on the one hand, I don't really love breakfast food, but there are times I want it... and my wants run to something like, "Could I have ten pieces of bacon, one piece of french toast and a big plate of hash browns?" That's a combo I've never seen on ANY breakfast menu. So a buffet lets me have the breakfast I want. We walked into the diner, and it's a simple local eatery. Looks like your grandma's dining room, sorta. The service was FAST and with a great smile from all we spoke with. The buffet looked simple and basic, but as we opened the lids on the steam table, we saw all the things you needed... and some pleasant surprises. They take their biscuits, fluffy and flavorful as they are, half them and then toss them on the grill with butter to brown then just a bit. This made for the best damn biscuits and gravy EVER. Their bacon is thick cut. THICK CUT BACON ON A BUFFET. I was in heaven. No limp, paper-crumbly cheap bacon here. The five pieces I had (*burp*) were heavenly. Thick, fluffy french toast with a fresh strawberry compote was really a delight; they even had a can of whipped cream to finish off the top with. Sausages (link and patty), crambled eggs, a selection of little pastries, some mini scones, fresh fruit, potatoes... all the breakfast basics. Each was very good; quality food with great flavor. My husband and I lived here briefly in 2013 and he loved their biscuits and gravy. We were on a road trip last week with a planned night in John Day, so of course we came here for breakfast! My meal was wonderful, they had a coloring menu and fresh set of crayons for my daughter, and my husband's biscuits and gravy were just as he remembered--very filling and at a great price. Very unsatisfactory experience -- our server seemed confused and wouldn't make eye contact with either of us. We ordered our entrees and some sweet potato fries to start with. We waited patiently for the fries - they never arrived. As for the entrees (a sandwich and a Cobb salad) they were equally as disappointing. The salad came with no dressing but extra hair. The sandwich was thin, sad, and did not come as I had ordered. The server was inattentive to my empty water glass and I had to make quite the ruckus to get her attention for the bill. One of the five-star delights of my current hometown of Sacramento is a burger joint called the Squeeze Inn, so named because it's phenomenally popular with its loyal regulars and throngs of Food Network-inspired newbies, yet the indoor seating is limited to eleven barstools at the counter. But now that I've eaten breakfast at the Squeeze-In Restaurant & Deck in John Day, I understand a different reason for such a name. The dining area is plenty big enough here to accomodate several families, but what makes the name so appropos is that this place serves up such a huge quantity on every platter, you hafta squeeze it into your stomach to make it fit. We visited the Squeeze-In on a long roadtrip, and I knew that I'd be eating several eggy breakfasts, so on this particular day, I chose to order a bowl of oatmeal with maple and brown sugar, plus a short stack of pancakes and orange juice. I had high hopes for a big hike later in the morning, so my idea was to NOT GET FULL! But, little did I know that the pancakes here are positively gigantic. And perfect in every way, too! On weekends, there is a breakfast buffet. Usually, the thought of a breakfast buffet brings back nauseating memories of my parents dragging me to a Hometown Buffet. Besides, I didn't wanna get full. But, y'know...When I come back to John Day again next summer, I do suppose that I'll hit up that buffet. The quality of the buffet goods appeared to be right on par with the regular menu items. It might also be nice to eat on the deck in the summertime, too, as it overlooks Canyon Creek. read more

The food was not outstanding but tasted okay. But already, before I finished eating, I began to feel bad. I thought maybe I'd eaten some wheat (I'm allergic to that), but my dining companion who doesn't share my allergy, was having the same reaction. We both felt terrible for most of the day. It was like an overdose of rancid oil, but even worse. What did they put in that stuff? The one thing we had in common was the fried potatoes - they were crunchy all over, like they'd been deep-fried. How 'bout you change your oil more often. I heard the place was under new ownership since we ate there four years ago. Too bad they've gone downhill so severely. Fortunately, the Outpost down the street has good food. Very good with a twist! I had the salmon salad and it was packed with delicious salmon. It could have used more toppings and flavor. My brother had the Reuben and it was delicious! He noted it had a smoky taste to it and I considered that a treat! We voted their onion rings best we ever had! Looking around the salads and sandwiches looked rather small and unappetizing. The burgers and fries looked great! I would make a stop here. It's closer to the edge of town heading toward Portland. read more

The wife and I stopped in for breakfast on Sunday 03/20/2022 and had there California Benidict breakfast, it was out of this world. The menu said smothered in hollandaise sauce and they weren't kidding, plenty enough for the super fluffy hash browns. We will return with out a doubt ! The place was clean and the staff was great. What a find! Living in Portland, I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to tasty breakfast/brunch options. I was fairly certain this place would be comparable to other small town diners (good enough, but not exceptional in any way). The Squeeze-In was such a pleasant surprise. The food was plenty tasty, the staff was as friendly as can be, prices were very reasonable, and most importantly they were extremely accommodating to my friend's dietary needs. He has Celiac's disease and cannot eat gluten. They were able to offer gf toast and pancakes, and assured him that there is no gluten in the eggs or hashbrowns either (some places put pancake batter in their scrambled eggs). All of this for no extra cost! That's basically unheard of in Portland. For $34 (not including the tip) it fed four hungry adults! If I ever find myself in John Day Oregon again, I'll be sure to stop by this place again. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch as we were driving through this beautiful area. Husband ordered the Philly steak sandwich, which was overcooked but still pretty good. I ordered an A1 burger, which was delicious. We ordered at 1:40 PM and didn't get our food until 2:30 PM, on a weekday. There were signs all over the restaurant stating "please be patient, we are shortstaffed." At the time of our order, we were the only new people in the restaurant. Two guys came in about 10 minutes after us and got their food at the same time we did. read more

In this tiny sleepy town of John Day there isn't a whole lot to choose from. Yawn! But, after reading some Yelp reviews we opted for the Squeeze-in. Overall, we were not disappointed. If it were not for the young waitress, this restaurant would have earned a solid 4 stars. The food was very good, and very satisfying. It reminded me of a great home cooked meal. I had a pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw and a side of fresh and yummy fries. It was perfect! The strawberry lemonade was loaded with strawberries. Love that! If you are looking for good home-cooked style food this is the place to go in John Day. The waitress kinda blew the experience through a series of bad server etiquette. We were never offered a refill on our drinks and our cups sat empty throughout most of the meal. She never came by the table to ask how everything was or to see if everything was to our liking, thus it was not until she brought the check that I had the chance to ask for a refill. Then she only brought 2 out of the 3 of us who needed refills our drinks. When my son's meal was delivered, instead of her placing the plate in front of my son, she handed it to me, without even so much as a warning as to how burning hot the plate was. I nearly dropped it on top of my own plate, but managed to get it down on the table before I dropped it. It burned the hell out of my fingers, which ached for a few hours afterward, and the waitress was still at the table and saw my immediate reaction of gasping in pain but said nothing. No apology...nothing. She just turned around and walked away. Anyway, I can't fault that restaurant for one servers inadequacies. They have a help-wanted sign on the front of the building...so maybe they are looking for a replacement. read more
