What an awesome stop for lunch! Thanks to the previous Yelp reviews we found this wonderful spot on our way from Bend to Boise. We loved our sandwiches & fries - Reuben & Turkey Melt - and are so glad we got pie for dessert, too! I cannot say enough positive things about this cafe. It is a hidden gem. The pies are homemade. Even the crust! The food; everything is amazing. It's obvious the owner pours his heart and soul into the restaurant. The wait staff is friendly. Dusty was a pleasure to have as a server and wears many hats. Always zipping here and there. We ate here like 4 or 5 times. We were only in town 4 days. lol! We would go for breakfast. Then, later my husband would say, "hey wanna go get a burger at the cafe?" He just couldn't stay away. Oh! And the portions are BIG! Dusty asked our fiends one morning, " half or whole?" Our friend order the whole. Wow! Dusty laughed. Said, " I ask ya." That's the one plate I didn't get a picture of. Stopped here on the way from our road trip (Portland to Boise) for lunch and it definitely hit the spot! Service was friendly and attentive even if it took a little bit to order. You seat yourself and they will bring her menu to you. The food came quickly after we put in our order and you pay inside at the register after you get your check. Bathroom inside was very clean. I got the Turkey Melt with side salad and my Hubby got the Reuben with fries. Both sandwiches were super crispy and seasoned well! My side salad was fresh and the portion size is great for the price ($11 for sandwich, side salad or soup or fries of potato salad). (4++) We split a surprisingly large patty melt on rye (the way it should be) made with the famous Painted Hills beef. Yummy and not greasy! Side salads were basic but crispy fresh and generous. The peach blueberry and the raspberry pies were truly delish. Do come early because by 1:30 they were almost out of the 10 or so different pie choices. I am a pilot and occasionally get to this restaurant, I have travelled the world and they have a "Beast Burger" that is the Best burger I've ever had, a custom blend of beef that they created, wild and domestic beef combination. They serve it medium rare and have a special bun. They put it together with great care and it looks very similar to any homemade hamburger, but the taste is superb. Their hours there are limited, but if I am in town when they are open, I will be there! They also have a very extensive list of pies in the menu. read more

These small town cafes can be such a find. This one most certainly was. It would have been perfect if not for the clam chowder, over seasoned and much too thick, almost like eating mashed potato. But then, there was the excellent BLT. If you are a BLT connoisseur, this is a place to light up your lights. And the rib eye steak! It came from the local Painted Hills Ranch. Grass fed beef, it was one of the best tasting, most tender steaks Mr. B has ever had. He made a point of telling the chef, he was so in love with his meal. Oh yesssss. The strawberry milkshake was made with real hard ice cream and big chunks of strawberry. A great one! And let's not forget dessert. We succumbed to two slices of pie, one Marionberry and one Strawberry Rhubarb and with absolutely no regret. Whoever made them stole my mom's recipes! Such a delightful setting. Rustic indoors and outside, you will find pretty hanging baskets filled with flowers and whimsical Fall decor. Cute beyond words. And last but not least, Tiffany, our server, was so full of vim and vinegar. She needs to be cloned! We had a very memorable meal. We would love to come back. During the six days we spent in Dayville camping, we visited Dayville Cafe four times. The service is so nice and everyone is so sweet and the food is really good. I had fish and chips one night and a prawn dinner another night. W had chicken fried steak one night and a burger another night. We also had breakfast here twice. The dinners come with soup (delicious!), a salad, choice of potato, bread and a piece of pie. The pies are a big thing here. I'm not much of a dessert person, but the blackberry rhubarb pie was delicious. Both days I had breakfast, I ordered the Pioneer Breakfast, which included bread, hashbrowns and two eggs. The food definitely is NOT health food, but everything is cooked just right and the food is so good. Just take some hikes around John Day to work off the calories. read more

Was visiting from out of town and stopped by both for dinner and then breakfast the following morning. Each waitress we had could not have been more pleasant. They were both nice and run a tight ship - tables are clean, menus and water are brought out efficiently, food orders taken quickly. Food was served quickly, very tasty and a good value. Probably the best place to eat in this general neck of the woods, we were glad to have found it. I know it's cattle country around these parts, but there's precious little on the menu if you're not a meat-eater. Some veggie options would go a long way. And the coffee at breakfast was old-school, maybe Folgers? Dunno, but the coffee was a let-down, wasn't full-bodied. We were lucky enough to visit this place on a Wednesday as it is closed on Monday and Tuesday. Seems to be a family operation and we are so happy to support local eateries. We had heard this place was great and it did not disappoint. My husband had the ribeye steak and it came with soup, salad a potato and dessert. I ordered half of an Orchard salad and it was plenty. Options are limited in Dayville, but as we pulled up at Dayville Cafe I knew it would be a good stop. We immediately ordered a few milkshakes, I got a strawberry, it came with a normal glass plus one of those metal containers nearly full. They had quite a list of burger to choose from, but I went with the Stage Coach. It was outstanding. They use local grass fed (grain finished) beef from Painted Hills, which happens to be one of my favorite. Their fries are house cut and tasted great. Everything is homemade, the fries are hand cut and the homemade pie list will make your mind spin! If you are anywhere near here, this is the place to eat, but it's only open until 7 pm W-S so don't wait until later. We tried the shrimp curry special, the burgers and the breaded cod. The burgers were ok but the fish and the curry were really good. The very best thing here is the pie, which is truly outstanding. I had the harvest apple, which I thought was spectacular. The staff mostly masked up carefully, but many of the other customers did not. We ate outside on the porch. For sad reasons, a lot of people in SE Oregon oppose masks and vaccines, which explains their disproportionately high rate of Covid. read more
