What a fun store! The service is super friendly and helpful. I bought a few different kinds from spicy to sweet, I can't wait to try them at home! I was in a bit of a rush but I'd definitely go back so I can see what they have. They gave me a buckeye to try which was delicious, and you can ask to taste other things before you buy, too. Stopped by the newest Peanut Shoppe location this evening, but they were already closed and will only reopen tomorrow at noon apparently. Upside is this iconic shop has been lighting up it's neon Mr. Peanut sign since the 1930s nearly 100 years of operation in downtown Columbus. This is the third location that I know of, but the quality is always the same. This is the place in Columbus to come for fresh roasted peanuts, and all kinds of specialty candies. Salty or sweet they're sure to have something for most folks to snack on. Look for that great Mr. Peanut sign near Broad and High St. It's definitely worth a visit. read more

Yeah!!!! The new location is open for business. They have moved to the north side of the capitol building on the corner of High and Broad Street. The iconic Mr. Peanut sign is not up yet (will be next week). Same old fashioned feel to the new location and the same personal, high quality service. I got to meet the new owner and he is very excited to be open and said he plans to keep the old fashion feel we all love. They still offer great snacks. Priced per weight and each order is weighed out for you. Prices went up a little, but that is to be expected. He said they also plan to be open for the nearby theater showings so you can get reasonable snacks for your show. Stop in and say hi. You will not be disappointed. read more

I have passed by The Peanut Shoppe many times over the years frequenting the Ohio Theater. The last time we went to the theater The Peanut Shoppe was open! My sister and I were estatic to see what they had to offer. The shop keepers were so friendly and kept the line moving quickly. There were several people wandering in to get goodies. They have chocolate and nut offerings mostly with a drink cooler in the corner and a few other odds and ends. Unlike other chocolate shops that allow you to purchase by the piece, The Peanut Shoppe only does by the 1/4 lb. Their chocolate is fantastic though! They also offer water which is nice after eating sweet chocolate and salty peanuts. I was happy to see them open as my sister and I both forgot what we like to call purse chocolate for outings to the theater. This provided us the perfect excuse to stock up on purse chocolate and try someplace new! I hope they are open for future theater events this summer and fall! read more

From an era where tailfinned cars dripping with chrome oozed down the streets of Ohio's capital city, this survivor beckons. A true nut and candy shop, from its neon sign with the Planters Peanut logo to the fryers cooking hot peanuts, cashews, etc..., heck, even the aroma as you walk in the doors alerts patrons that they have hit pay dirt. Attentive staff behind glass counters weigh out the exact amount you want of nuts, candies, seasonal items, whatever. They also can prepare gift baskets. Sometimes, fresh popped popcorn is available. This is the kind of store Marty McFly went into and asked for a Whatchamacallit in 1955 Hill Valley in a scene that should have been in Back to the Future. This is the type of small business we had better hold onto, so go in, buy loads of stuff, tip well. And then, like the old shampoo bottles advised, repeat. I understand they also ship, and they recently had curbside service run-out-to-the-car because the never ending construction of the metropolis blocked their entrances for a long while. My wife and I stopped in here for the first time in the five years we've lived downtown. We were greeted by a friendly older couple who couldn't have been nicer and more pleasant. They have LOTS of snacking options beyond just nuts. Candy, fresh roasted nuts, and plenty of throwbacks to an almost forgotten era of corner stores. The machine they use for roasting is an antique and quite remarkable considering its age. The store was more recently renovated so its got a clean interior, is well-organized, and the cost isn't cheap but definitely far from expensive. I like the fact that it's a full service store, meaning, when you want a snack, the staff measures it out for you then checks it out. No self checkout stuff here and I'm glad! I will return here again and when I'm hard-pressed to get great gifts for friends, I'll stop by the shop. They apparently will ship gifts out for you. I dig that! read more

What a cute little shoppe! In addition to the Planters sign outside, there is quite a bit of memorabilia inside, as well, that shares space with several large cases full of goodies, with a definite focus on candies and nuts! They have both a front and back door, which were both open and creating some nice ventilation on our visit. While there was plenty to consider, we ended up going with a 1/4 lb each of the Brazil nuts (very good), the filberts (a touch salty, but otherwise tasty), the pecans (excellent), and the cinnamon almonds (crunchy with a great cinnamon flavor). Service was fast and efficient - though they had a nice little line going, it moved quickly. It was fun to look around at the other items in the store and in their outside window too. Parking - it's downtown, of course, so it's pretty much parking garages or meters, or park elsewhere and walk, which is what we opted to do. read more

Well, I walked in because I was trying to get out of the rain and maybe grab some candy . OMG !!! what I embarked on was a true time warp gem . Teagan happened to be working and wow did I get more knowledge and a great treat of a story than any candy in this shop . Turns out in the 1930s there happened to be over 300 planters peanuts shops operating. Columbus had theirs in 1936. Now a days there only 12 left , Standard Brands bought out the Planters name. And they closed all the stores except the 12. Mike & Patty worked here at this Columbus one since 1972 and worked handing out peanuts on the street . Also as far as peanut shops , Ohio has the the most peanut shops, a whopping 3! Planters is now owned by Kraft foods. Patty one of the owners of this shop along with her husband Mike. Patty is one knowledgeable lady , she found the roasting manuals quite some years back and learned how to roast the nuts by herself! Teagan , the kind sales person was working on my visit and soooooooo amazingly kind & knowledgeable helped me choose a snack , can you guess ? Fresh Roasted Peanuts nice an warm. Bummer they didn't have any cheese balls. Those are always yummy. Oh, Another interesting fact was that "Planters" started as one Italian immigrant with a dream started a peanut push cart in New York and named it Planters to sound more american. When I see an old timey sign in downtown Columbus, I assume the place has been closed for 50 years and no one has moved in since. That's why I flipped out when I realized the giant Planter's Peanut sign on High St. was actually directing me to an old timey store that was still open. They still roast the nuts in the store (i'm going to try to get through this review with exactly zero questionable euphemisms) with the original roaster. I stared in the glass cases full of a long history of Planter's marketing toys and whatnot for about ten minutes before I actually made it to the nuts. The nuts are laid out in glass cases as well, and there's a whole range of different kinds of nuts. I went for 1/4 lb of unsalted shelled pistachios for a couple bucks. I chatted up the lady behind the counter and walked back outside into 2008- still a little confused about what just happened- with a handful of nuts (damn!). read more

Ok - so it's definitely one of last of its kind, and probably hasn't changed its business practices too much since it opened decades ago, but I have a hard time granting The Peanut Shoppe 5 stars. 4? Definitely. Because they're doing what they do (that is, peddling roasted nuts, candy and snack mixes of all varieties bulk-style) well. Not 5, because the store itself is a little on the dingy side, and more than a few times I've tried a selection that tasted a little on the stale side. Generally, though, The Peanut Shoppe is great for a snack fix, whether you're craving sweet or salty (although they do nuts infinitely better than chocolate). Just be sure to bring your pennies, as the store is cash only. Prices are reasonable, though. You can typically grab a quarter pound of nuts or candy for between $1 and $1.75. One of the best deals is the big bag of caramel corn for $75. That sucker gets me all the way to dinner and then some. ~a read more

Can't help but patronize this Columbus institution even though the staffers are quite unpleasant ESPECIALLY to kids! I have been in the store on many occasions with small children and experienced downright surliness courtesy of the counter workers. Additionally, the candy is almost always stale. Warning: Do not buy any caramel bulls-eyes because they are always well past their prime. On the upside, the nuts are always delicious--far better and fresher than any nuts you can buy in a can or jar, anywhere. read more

Stopped in on a whim because it smelled so good. I asked what we were smelling and the gentleman behind the counter said that they roast nuts daily and the last thing has been cashews. We were offered several samples as well as a wealth of local information by the friendly gentleman behind the counter. Thanks to him we discovered the wonderful and free cbus as well as some wonderful local shops. This shop felt like a small town treasure and I highly recommend it! read more

I regularly visit The Peanut Shoppe for my dark chocolate covered almond fix. Although I need to start going here for the uncovered nuts. They have pretty much every nut you can imagine in a variety of mixes and the prices definately rival grocery stores. read more

All my items have been fresh (maybe not the popcorn...there usually isn't any anyway) and the large selection means you're going to find something out of the ordinary and good. What's great is the nuts and candies are not pre-packaged. They weigh out just what you want so you can satisfy your sweet or salty cravings without wasting money or food and best of all, without gaining extra weight by eating big supermarket sized packages. My fiance and I go to the peanut shoppe today and the worker was extremely rude. The customer in front of us asked if the nuts were fresh, and she responded with I dont know when they made these, with a nasty tone to her voice. Then my fiance and I had gift certificates each and she would not allow both of us to use them because we were together. I tried to explain that he had his own and I have mine and she cut me off saying I'm only taking one gift certificate. So I walked out and did not buy the merchandise and I will not be returning. read more

If its your first time visit, and if they have just made them that day, the pecans deep fried in peanut oil are awesome, my favorite. Lots of other good things as well.
