As a senior citizen who has moved frequently, I've faced the challenge of finding a new dentist…read moreeach time I relocated. Unfortunately, I've recently encountered difficulties in finding a reputable and trustworthy dentist. Over the years, I've encountered numerous dentists who seem to recommend unnecessary and costly procedures solely for financial gain. My most recent experience with Chestnut Hill Dental at 631-A VFW Parkway in Chestnut Hill was particularly disheartening. I chose this dental practice because they were within my insurance network. I had recently undergone a root canal performed by an endodontist on one of my molars, and I needed to replace the temporary filling (which had been placed by the endodontist) with a permanent one. Both the endodontist and my former dentist had recommended a specific filling with the dental code D2391. I reached out to my dental insurance company, and they informed me that the contracted fee with dentists in their network for this procedure was $160, and my out-of-pocket cost would be 25%, amounting to $40. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Prasadini Shetty at Chestnut Hill Dental for the D2391 filling on my molar. However, upon arriving for my appointment, I was informed that they intended to perform a core build-up, which they quoted at $278 as my cost, with the remainder covered by insurance. I reiterated my request for the D2391 filling. A core build-up is typically recommended when the tooth's structure is weak and a crown needs to be done on the tooth. In my case, I already had a crown on that tooth. The endodontist had skillfully performed a root canal by drilling a small hole through the crown. After some persistence, they finally agreed to proceed with just the filling. At this juncture, I became increasingly uncomfortable with their insistence on an unnecessary and costly procedure. For the filling, they requested an upfront copayment of $49, even though my insurance company had assured me that my payment should only be $40 (25% of the contracted fee of $160), and I had already met my deductible for the year. Their explanation for the $49 figure was perplexing. I insisted on paying the $40 as advised by my insurance company, indicating my willingness to cover the additional $9 if my insurance determined it to be necessary after billing. However, they continued to press for the $49 upfront payment before proceeding with the procedure. It became evident that their primary focus was financial gain rather than the well-being of their patients. Fortunately, I recognized their true priorities before committing to any further treatment. Furthermore, I was dissatisfied with the condition of their facility, which was located in a damp, enclosed basement with noticeable rust spots on the ceiling.

I never felt that my emotional trauma was taken seriously, and after reviewing my account history,…read moreit is obvious my dental PTSD was indeed ignored and never taken seriously. Things came to a head when I wrote an email to the office manager saying I had an unsettling and chaotic appointment, detailing what transpired. The response I received was shocking and infantilizing. There were many ways she could have responded or even apologized, but instead, my complaint was blamed on my PERSONAL CHALLENGES, yes, she wrote PERSONAL CHALLENGES! She ignored most of what I wrote, like how I was still upset that the last person who took X-rays left me with cuts and sores in my mouth for weeks, how I should not have paid for the X-rays- ZERO acknowledgement of this issue. I waited a few weeks to look at my records because I was still upset from our email exchange but now after reading the notes in my records, I am sick to my stomach. Exact notes including the soooooo and sooo from the person who cleaned my teeth. 6/16/20 -pt soooooo anxious about me cleaning her teeth today, she is sooo afraid of #8 falling out. Not noted, #8 (new tooth) fell out TWO TIMES. Yes, I was a hot mess (still am) with anxiety because of the tooth falling out TWO TIMES. 6/17/21- Patient's anxiety is very irrational due to having had an accident when she was 6 years old. WRONG and inaccurate - I was in the SIXTH grade (not 6 years old), I fell and knocked my teeth out while ice skating. It was during this time that my childhood dentist, Dr. Lucia of Lynn, MA, abused me while under sedation and was eventually arrested for insurance fraud. His shoddy and negligent work led to years of ongoing dental issues, which will continue for the rest of my life. I shared this information. I shared again and again that ANYONE in my mouth causes me anxiety. Even my last note is wrong. 2/29/25- patient NO SHOW. Not noted: 11/12/24 - I left this appointment in tears. I did not make or confirm my next appointment. I was devastated that I had a cracked crown and angry that the dentist did not discuss my gums after having had gum surgery in August. I may not have had a voice when I was in the SIXTH grade, but I have a voice now.

1 Star Review - Beware of Billing Practices and Lack of Communication…read moreI normally don't post reviews, but after three unanswered attempts to resolve a billing issue, I feel obligated to warn others. Before my procedure, I asked for time to review my insurance benefits. I was told by Dr. Modem that this wasn't necessary because the office had my insurance info and the treatment was "100% covered." Based on that assurance, I agreed. Weeks later, I received a $188 bill. Again, I had initially asked for more time to review my insurance information before making a decision but was rushed into the decision as Dr. Modem assured me that she had all my insurance information and that it was "100% covered". No one mentioned I was near my annual maximum or that I could owe more. Had I known, I would have scheduled for next year. I called multiple times, emailed on Dec 10, replied to their automated text on Dec 19, and emailed again on Dec 29 offering a fair compromise. No response at all. After checking reviews, there's a clear pattern: Patients rushed into decisions without time to verify coverage Surprise bills after being told procedures were covered Unresponsive and unprofessional communication Aggressive policies and dismissive tone in replies The only email subject I received says it all: "please see the preestimate sent by dr modem to insurance that states preestimates are only estimates and no guarantee of payment and also insurance waiver signed by you"--all lowercase. If you value transparency and professionalism, think twice before booking here. Always get cost estimates in writing and confirm coverage yourself. Based on my experience and others, this office prioritizes revenue over patient trust.
