This place is huge in comparison to a lot of the other nerdy type stores I've been to. And, unlike other nerdy type stores, this one is well lit, with plenty of huge windows up front, and clean floors and empty tables with chairs for people to hump in and play together. They have a game library where you can do an all-you-can-play for $5 a head, and there's plenty of space to play it! They also have community days where you can borrow the games for free! If you're here shopping for the game nerd in your life, and you can't quite afford a full on game, they have little enamel pins and stickers and such that will be a nice little small gift for your gaming friend, while not breaking the budget. I liked that the stickers were made by a local artist, whose name was on the board where they were displayed. At $4 each for a vinyl sticker, I'd say it was a pretty decent buy for something that supports a local artist. And yes, you could buy similar themed stickers at online retailers, but those are generally a bunch of stolen art work slapped onto sticker paper and sold, or a bunch of AI garbage. These stickers looked like they'd been made by the person who was putting their name on them. They also have a private D&D type game room that you can rent to play your more involved pen and paper RPG's in. It's got a table, some chairs, and a door that closes so that you can have your privacy. We went in on a Saturday, and the place was absolutely jumping. People playing card games (Magic The Gathering I think was prominent), board games, or just having snacks and hanging out. I have spent a very decent amount of money at the Philly Game Store over the past 4 years that I've lived in the area. I am an avid tabletop game player, and want nothing more than to support the organizations that help to cultivate this hobby's community. But the Philly Game Shop leaves something to be desired and I am confused that no one else seems to notice it. It's a decent game store, the issue isn't really with the owners or the selection. If they don't have something you want they'll order it for you, like any game store. The issue is with an employee whose continued employment I completely fail to understand. Shane. I've never had a positive interaction with this person (and we've interacted at least 10 times) and I'm starting to think they don't like people. Which is a bad trait to have as an employee of a store seeking to perform the role of *community center.* Every interaction with this person has left me feeling stupid and unwelcome. They rush people along, cut people off, and their voice drips with disdain and rudeness. I will no longer be going into the store if I see them working at the counter. I once asked Shane about their stock and they looked me dead in the eye and said "I don't know, I just work here." do I even need to explain how little sense that makes to say to someone? read more

Small, but intimate place. Staff here is very friendly and on top of things. Mask policy enforced strictly and they offer masks to those that forget to bring one. The game stores in the area such as this one, Queen and Rook, and Dark Depths tend to be a community to try to help each other out even though they are also "competitors" too. read more

I really enjoyed this game store! They had a great selection of games and the environment was very bright and clean, with a lot of open space. They had a lot of popular board games, but they also had a cool selection of indie board games as well. I used their restroom while I was there and it was honestly just an extremely pleasant experience LOL. They had a lot of supplies out available, dry shampoo, lotion, tampons, and it looked like it was designed to be as accessible as possible. A lot of care and consideration was clearly put into it. If I lived in or near Philly I could see myself coming back often. :-) It looks like their inventory is available online on their site as well, maybe if my local shops don't carry something I'll order online from them someday! read more

The staff know their stuff! Wanted a game for just two players and then also wanted to get into an RPG style game and they had a plethora of suggestions. They also have on-site game play with special hour where beginners are suggested to check out to with experts willing to teach. I'd been shopping at Philly AIDS Thrift and spontaneously walked by this shop, decided to go in. I am constantly on the lookout for games I can play solo. I opened the door and there were at least 15 people seated around playing games, and EVERY head turned toward me which put me off my... uh, game, hah... but I guess this place is quite active as a gaming spot as well as a store. If that's your sort of thing, it seems very welcoming. I would rather be shot in the face with an arrow, but that's me. The person behind the counter was really awesome though. I had actually stopped by another place between PAT and here, and the person working there treated me like garbage. Honestly in 2019 I forget that there are disgusting bigots sometimes, and I also sometimes forget that I probably present as some kind of middle aged crust punk. It's comical because, and forgive the unintentional humble brag, but I'm actually an incredibly well off middle aged crust punk. The lesson being that you should treat everybody well because you don't know who has wads of disposable cash waiting to be thrown into your till. ANYway, the person at the counter told me about their gaming library and I was like "No no, I prefer to live inside of a small plastic box buried underground where I don't have to interact with other humans," and this person really should get an award for listening, understanding and changing gears on a dime. Because legit, this is a skill. And like, even if you're working retail with people you love and at a place you love, I comprehend that working retail is like not a party gig, you know? It involves real emotional labor, so when some emotionally broken weirdo is trying to shop, it's not easy to understand how to interact in the way that's best for that person. But THIS person helping me, they deserve an award. So another person came and helped me out a bit to show me what single player games, particular escape room themed games, they had in stock. Unfortunately the ones they had were on sale at a major retail chain about a year ago for like 90% off. I still don't know WHY, they are worth the very reasonable retail price ($15 I think?) But to their detriment I'd already bought them all. HOWEVER, they referred me to this Choose Your Own Adventure tabletop game with a one player option, and I bought that. But here's the thing that's the stuff. I was in a mad rush because I had to get to a holiday party in Fishtown, so I just kind of bought that game and took off. But because of how awesome they were, me and my wallet are coming back ASAP. Possibly today actually, but definitely this week. What they didn't know is that I set aside a budget earlier this month SPECIFICALLY to buy a bunch of games, because I've decided to build up a collection. And I'm going to get them all from here. I mean by and large I prefer supporting mom'n'pops anyway, but when you treat someone this well, IMO you seal the deal forever. So that's what. You should come here to buy and/or play games. We are so excited to welcome these folx to the neighborhood! The space is clean, well-lit, charming and comfortable. Their stock of games range from the new hotness to classics to indie sleepers and their are a few nice tables to play either your purchases or something from their small demo library. Taylor and Kevin were kind and helpful and even without our asking, looked up info on BoardgameGeek to help us make our decisions. The washroom is large and super wheelchair accessible and while the front door does have a step, we called ahead and a portable ramp was already waiting for us. It *is* only a few blocks from Queen and Rook Game cafe, which could beg the question: Is there room for both places? Yes! Each spot is doing very different things and for our part, we will happily patronize both... One for buying games and one for playing them. read more
