We went to see Million Dollar Quartet and it was amazing. These musicians killed it. The bass player almost stole the show. You really felt like you were in Memphis at Sun Studio with Elvis and the legends. Parking is free in adjacent lots. There is a bar with snacks and drinks open before the show, and if you want to order a drink ahead of time for intermission it will be ready and waiting for you. Great venue. read more

My wife and I watched a play for the first time today. It was a great experience. We watched "Come From Away", a play about the town of Gander, Newfoundland who sheltered 7,000 people for 5 days after 9/11. It's a very nice venue. Parking is close (and free). If you like you can take the Light Rail there also. The Stephenson theater, where we saw the play, seats 500. There are no bad seats. The play itself was very well done. We thoroughly enjoyed it! I love theatre performances and today I took in my very first play at The Phoenix Theatre Company. I chose the venue for Valentine's Day with my husband. I walked away impressed; it was an electrifying reminder of how powerful live theatre can be. Situated in the heart of downtown Phoenix, this theatre holds roughly 500 seats. It's what I consider an intimate atmosphere, and it made today's performance feel up close and personal. Even from my mid-row seat, I felt fully connected to the action. I was close enough to catch every grin, glance and costume detail. Other notes...We scanned our tickets electronically and easily. There was enough leg room for us and the seats were comfortable. Dress was business casual for most of us (I did spot some folks in jeans and tee shirts). Parking was easy enough at 30 minutes till showtime. The Phoenix Theatre Company brought a dynamic, high-quality production to the Phoenix community today, and I look forward to coming back! read more

This is my second time here, and I love it! This is a smaller venue, but they do a great job with what they have. Sears are comfortable, great view of the stage seemingly from all areas of the theater. There are drinks and very light refreshments for purchase, but I would say it's best to eat before you come and/or after you leave. read more

We came to this theater for the first time to see a few friends in Frozen. This show was the first production on their brand new stage. The whole experience was impressive and very professional. The show itself was wonderful with intricate costumes, stellar scene transitions and a wonderful cast. We had tickets in row K and paid for premium prices but in person every seat would have been a great view. So keep that in mind if cost is an issue. They have a food and alcohol bar service before the show with a lovely lobby. They sold concessions and souvenirs as well. The negatives: the bathrooms were quite unkept. Considering what tickets cost, this should have been better. I also would have liked to see better signage to direct us to where the theatre door entrances were located. Hopefully, that can be improved for the future. I loved the free parking right outside the box office too. We will definitely look out for more shows to attend here in the future. read more

I have been to The Phoenix Theatre Company twice for two performances: Churchill and Jersey Boys. They were at different theaters so I can touch on each one. The larger new theater hasn't opened yet. Both performances were on weekdays: one on a Wednesday and one on a Thursday. I was able to find free parking in their lot on both occasions. My Wednesday visit was tougher because the Museum of Fine Arts, which shares the same lot, had free admission on this day. Luckily, someone was pulling out right as I entered. The theater is beautiful. After passing the box office, you walk through a lit-up red corridor where you'll see a message from Steven Spielberg. This brings you to a beautiful courtyard which would be a splendid place to hang out when the weather cooperates. There are two buildings. The smaller one houses the smaller theater where I saw Churchill. I'd say this theater can seat 75-100 people or so. The foldable chairs aren't the most comfortable but they do the job. If you pay for more expensive seats, you have a little table between you and your partner in crime. You can bring drinks you bought at the bar into the theatre. You can also bring an empty water bottle and fill it up at their water fountain (pro tip). The larger theater is more elaborate with real seating and a larger stage. This theater can seat a lot more than the early one. Next to the theater is a bar and a restaurant. I haven't ate at the restaurant (the reviews are mediocre) but I have seen that they will be opening a new restaurant soon. I have had one cocktail from the bar. Like other theaters, they have a signature cocktail for each performance based on the show. For Jersey Boys, I had the Sherry. It was a delicious and refreshing cocktail. The seats in the larger theater are pretty close together so there isn't much leg room. It's a little cramped. Despite some areas where you could be more comfortable, I had a fantastic experience at The Phoenix Theatre Company both times. They have a great lineup of shows which I appreciate. I love theatre and go regularly to Gammage Auditorium performances. Every now and then, I learn about other theatre in the area, and only during the pandemic did I attend my first Phoenix Theatre performance. This past weekend, my wife and I enjoyed our first indoor performance of the Phoenix Theatre Company, located in the Hormel Theatre. It was "Into the Woods". The theatre and physical spaces were great though it was a bit chaotic at intermission and before the show started, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. The Phoenix Theatre Company is the largest producing regional theatre company in the Valley. They offer more programs and experiences than any other. With nearly 500 performances on multiple stages and thriving education and outreach programs, they have more than 100,000 people come through their doors. Their mission is to "create exceptional theatrical experiences by using the arts to articulate messages that inspire hope and understanding." Every seat in the Hormel Theatre was a good one! In ordering our "Print At Home" ticket in advance, there were several different price points, and though we got seats near the back of the theatre, they were still good seats. You can get a subscription for the season that includes all shows or a flex pass. For next year, there is also a campus pass or a big six pass. You can read about the subscriptions, shows, and programming on their website at https://phoenixtheatre.com. I appreciate that parking is free and easy to access before the shows. They are also innovative as they held outdoor shows during the pandemic. There are many ways to save! First, you can certainly buy season tickets to save on each show if you planned to attend most or all of them. Second, there is Student Rush, a middle schooler, high schooler, or college student can get one $15 ticket second minutes before curtain with a student ID. Third, there is the Young Ambassador Society for adults under 40, where tickets for weekday performances Tuesday through Friday are just $39 (call the box office to sign up). Fourth, veterans save $10 on all tickets (more info at VetTix.org). Finally, there are occasional promotions like "buy one get one 50% off" or a special price on certain dates or times. My neighbor gifted our family with four tickets to the Phoenix Theater to see Miracle on 34th St. in the days after Christmas. It was a lovely family outing to end the holiday season. The show was wonderful, but being that is not running anymore, this review is for the theater. Per their website, "The Phoenix Theatre Company, originally founded as the Phoenix Players in 1920, is the oldest arts organizations in Arizona and remains one of the oldest operating arts organizations in the country." It has gone through extensive updates over the years, and they are currently almost done raising 20 million to fund a new theater addition. After you walk through the Steven Spielberg entrance (this is where he debuted his first film), you enter a beautiful green garden that is shared with the Phoenix Art Museum next door. Their ArtBar+Bistro opens two hours before showtime. The menu offers apps, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and dessert. As you enter your theater, there is a small beverage bar as well to grab a drink on the way in and at intermission. This is a beautiful theatre company. The actors, of all ages, were wonderful. The theater ushers were kind and really seemed to love their job and the actors. I'm excited to return for another production someday. read more

What an outstanding show! Being new to the area I am just getting my feet wet and all that Phoenix has to offer. We saw Frozen and it was outstanding. The two young actors did an outstanding job as young Anna and Elsa and the ensemble was outstanding. Beautiful voices, beautiful costumes. I was so impressed by the stage changes and how quickly it went to winter time. I highly recommend this show for young and old alike. Most certainly children will be delighted to see their beloved Anna and Elsa come to life, but as an adult going there without children, I was just as delighted. Bravo to the entire cast, director and musicians. read more

First let me begin by saying I visit the theatre in other cities and venues and have never met a person with such discernment. I was taking my niece to see 'Into the Woods' and initially it was very pleasant. When we walked through the door, the gentleman was very welcoming and offered directions. Our NEXT encounter were these 2 women standing by the left entrance. It was 6:20 and with the show starting at 7pm, I thought it was open seating. I opened the door and one woman grabbed the door while I was opening it and said, "what are you doing here?!" In amazement I showed her my tickets and she began to tell me that doors opened at 6:30. As I have never been here before I didn't know that, nor was I informed. At any rate, both women began to hold out there hand as to prevent us from going further and said "we're just gonna close this" and shut the door in our face. As stood there in confusion, they stared us down until we turned and walked away. Let me say that this is a quaint theatre, with a rich tradition in the community. The food can be pricey but decent quality and they do serve cocktails. All in all, with the musical, food, and drinks it was 7/10. Customer service is extremely important to me and it slightly disheartened my 13 yr old niece who loves musicals to be treated this way by "professionals" who should know better. If I have my choice, I will be choosing other theatre's in the valley. read more

What an absolute gem! A friend and I came to The Phoenix Theatre Company to see Waitress. I was impressed across the board. The actors were great. There's a live orchestra backing the show. Excellent production. The theater is small making for an intimate experience. The theater is adjacent to the Phoenix Art Museum--free parking in a good sized lot. Everyone working was so kind--gave us a little tour of the full bar, concession stand, and for Waitress--the mini pie shop. I see myself coming to this theater much more. The acoustics are excellent. During my time living in Phoenix, I was able to visit Phoenix Theatre about a half a dozen times. I have to say, this theatre has been an absolute joy. They provide a range of shows from the known ones like "Singing in the Rain" and "The Color Purple" to the lesser known "Bandstand". The performances are always well done and leave me feeling fulfilled. However, what I think I love most about this theatre is how devoted the production team is to telling authentic stories. In the audience at Bandstand, a show about a group of World War II veterans who push beyond their post-war struggles to pursue success as a band, I was lucky enough to sit next to the assistant director. I was struck by her passion and the importance of showing the struggle of World War II veterans. Another show that I would like to draw particular attention to is Tiananmen. This show was the first of its kind, showing a fictional love story set in the very true backdrop of the two months leading up to the Tiananmen massacre. This massacre is not frequently discussed and (I think) had never been portrayed on stage. Phoenix Theatre's portrayal of Tiananmen even drew the attention of a real life Tiananmen victim, who attended the show and spoke a few words on the importance of remembering the event. read more

We got tickets to see Elf before the Christmas holiday. Due to staffing issues, our initial show was cancelled. We rescheduled for a few days later and the rescheduled show was then cancelled. My suspicion is that some of the cast caught COVID and others fell ill a few days later. We rescheduled again and the third time's the charm! We really enjoyed seeing the performance. It was true to the movie but original in many ways that kept the audience engaged and excited. It was a fun performance and a nice way to celebrate the Christmas season. The Phoenix Theatre Company is quite good! The actors and orchestra were very professional, we had no issues rescheduling our seats multiple times, and the venue itself is lovely. The Phoenix Theatre is one of my favorite places to go see a play. I'm a theater junkie and frequent many shows here in the Valley. I prefer the theaters that are more intimate which is why I come here often. The production at Phoenix Theatre is great quality and almost all the seats make you feel close to the talent. Phoenix Theatre has been around for a hundred years and is neighbors with the Phoenix Art Museum in downtown Phoenix. They have a few stages here that run a variety of shows throughout the season. The entryway is named for filmmaker (and former Valley resident) Steven Spielberg. Shows at Phoenix Theatre run Wednesday through Sunday. There is a bar in the lobby area and you can hang out in the Art Museum courtyard area with your drink before the show starts. I most recently saw "Singin' in the Rain" and had loge seats. The show was fantastic and we enjoyed having two seats to ourselves. Even though it's free, my one issue with Phx Theatre is that parking can sometimes suck. Especially on evenings where the art museum has a big event like First Friday because they both share the parking lot. read more

Thank you so much to Yelp and The Phoenix Theatre Company for the free tickets to "Singin' In The Rain." I won them in a YelpPhoenix instagram contest. I haven't been to Phoenix Theatre for several years. I love their new entrance with the Stephen Spielberg display. Stephen Spielberg grew up in the Arcadia area of Phoenix and filmed his first movie in Phoenix. He screened his movie at The Phoenix Theatre (then known as the Phoenix Little Theatre) back in the 1960's. The cost to make the movie was $500. He charged $1 per person for admission and made $501 from the ticket sales of his first movie. I found this to be really fun and interesting info. Phoenix Theatre has made many renovations. There is a very attractive bar and seating area as well as a restaurant that closes for orders one hour prior to curtain. They also have a small snack bar with bottled water, candy, cookies, etc. The ushers were super friendly and helpful and one even gave me a tour of the theatre since we were there well ahead of curtain time. The theatre itself is fairly small, so there are no bad seats. We sat in "the luge," which are the raised seats on the side. We thoroughly enjoyed the production of "Singin' In The Rain." The production employed several professional actors and there was a full orchestra hidden away upstairs. They showed the orchestra on the screen during the bows at the end of the show. The sound, costumes, and lighting were fantastic. I really appreciated the high quality of the singing and dance numbers. There were also a good deal of acrobatics going on throughout the show, which was fantastic. The person that I took to the show said he liked it better than the original movie, which is saying a lot! I look forward to attending more performances at The Phoenix Theatre in the future. There are four separate theatres within The Phoenix Theatre complex, which is located next to the Phoenix Art Museum. There was plenty of free parking available. read more
