My friend had been raving about The Pie Tin since the moment I have met her, and I am so excited that I finally had the chance to go. There were several flavor options to choose from, but this was my first Australian pie so I went with the classic mince pie. I also got a side of the ancient grain salad and a soda for 14 bucks! My pie was incredible , I loved the flakiness, I loved the mince, and I was so sad to see that I had finished everything on my plate. I'm just so disappointed that I was too full to get a slice of dessert pie. This place did not disappoint and I am so grateful for the visit.

What a range of pies and sausage rolls!! The pies are large and very filling, freshly baked everyday and are totally the right food when it is a cold winters day. The price of the pies drops at 9.30pm when they become 2 for 1.

Small place but a fun communal table in the Center! Amazing pies - both the savoury and the sweet! Seriously addictive. My only complaint is that it is too good and the pieces are too large for the dessert pies. It is hard to have a favorite but I think the peanut butter and chocolate pie wins but I need more evidence (ie more pies) to really make that call. The lime one I have had a bite of - yum! And my next one will be a sour cherrry pie. As for savoury, the pulled pork is amazing although it is a little weird with the apples in it. I liked it but weird. I have had the beef brisket (slow roasted deliciousness). Don't even try to have the 'pie meal' where the pie comes with two side dishes because then you won't be able to have the dessert pies without having your stomach pumped. Of course you can just sit there and have a glass of wine or two to digest. And they even have decent coffee, too. Yes, I have spent way too long for a nice lunch there. I am hungry again wriring this review. What an awesome place.

After reading Hannah D's post forever ago I bookmarked this place. Linda I's post tipped me over the edge last night and I had to go today. When you think of Aussie food one of the first things that springs to mind is a meat pie. I think most Aussie's don't understand the notion of pie past this (maccas apple pie maybe an exception... maybe) Then we have the American's who eat pies in all sorts of wonderful (sweet) flavours. Then there is Pie Tin, taking all these flavours on board to educate those lucky enough Aussie's to venture down to Newtown. FOOD I love pie and don't live near Newtown so if I was going to drive there it called for a pie party and 7 pies to be bought! 1. oreo cookie pie ($7.50) 2. gooey caramel & milk chocolate ganache pie ($6.50) 3. Southern style slow roasted shredded pork with apple and bbq sauce ($6.80) 4. slow roasted lamb with white beans in rich paprika & tomato sauce ($6.80) 5. mexican chicken with red kidney beans & sour cream ($6.80) 6. sicilian style chilli lovers sausage pie ($5.80) 7. bbq beef & creamy green peppercorn sauce ($6.80) I made my way around 5 of the pies and this is my verdict 1. I cannot pin point what but like Siri W. I just think something was missing. It was nice but just not as nice as I had hoped the gigantic slice would be 2. I love how the caramel oozes out of this pie. Both the chocolate and caramel weren't too sweet which makes finishing off a slice easy. 3. seriously dry with no trace of apple and bbq sauce 4. not as dry as the shredded pork but still would have liked the filling to be a bit more moist. paprika in the pie was awesome though. 5. awesome flavour. nice juicy pie to match the yummy pastry OVERALL With so many flavours on the menu but not all of them available each day you are taking a gamble when heading down. Whilst I wasn't 5 star sold kinda visit, I think I will go back to revisit soon to try out more of their awesomely sounding flavours. Please have the snickers pie ready for me next time!!

    Welcome!

This is hands down THE best pie shop I've ever visited. Although it is of course a café. The eyes boggle from the moment you look at the gourmet selection staring right back at'cha. There's something to tantalise everyone's taste buds. At $7.95 they are value for money. The pies are the thickest in town and I'm not saying they look stupid, but they are insanely thick! I chose the butter chicken with green beans pie. To make it a meal you get 2 choices of salad for $13.95. Served on canteen metal plates, characteristic of the feel which goes with the name. There's a cool open plan dining area with open windows so you get a nice breeze. There is an awesome selection of dessert style pies on offer. I look forward to trying a few of them over a period of time. I would have given The Pie Tin 5 stars even on my first visit. My one disappointment though is that this café only supplies forks for dine in. What well deserving 5 star café doesn't have knives as part of their eating utensils? Overall, that is my only criticism and you definitely should create your own experience and pick up your mother sized pie with your hands. This is the way they were made to be enjoyed, right?!

SLOW ROASTED SMOKEY BEEF BRISKET & MUSHROOMS + 2 SIDES $14.50

The Pie Tin has that 'Inn' feel, old-fashioned and somewhat homely. Feels similar to a pie shop that you would find in rural areas. There are a selection of savoury pie, sides and great selection of dessert pies that are available from opening time. The most annoying thing is the time taken to serve the pies after ordering. It's all ready-made, yet it took more than 15min to be summoned to collect the meal at the counter with the place only at half capacity. Yes that's right, there's no table service. SLOW ROASTED SMOKEY BEEF BRISKET & MUSHROOMS + 2 SIDES $14.50 (Sides of leaf salad and potato salad) The size of the pie immediately stood out. It is quite big, one pie should be enough for two if you are going for something sweet afterwards. The pie is made up of a thin but dry pastry, I have mixed feelings about it. It is perhaps by design to hold up with sides such as pea/potato mash and gravy. I personally find it too dry and prefer the pastry of Bourke Street Bakery and Lorraine's Patisserie's better. While the filling of brisket was chunky and generous, it lacked depth of flavour and fell behind the two competitors mentioned above. The uniqueness of The Pie Tin is certainly its sides, the potato was good, served from the fridge and it did feel 'homemade'. The salad was standard and the serving was not as generous. The plate used was too small for two sides so you are better-off ordering one side instead of two in terms of value as they use the same plate size for one or two. BLACKFOREST MERINGUE PIE $7.90 to $10.90 The meringue is very rich and thick, thus very sweet. This heavy meringue looked like it would bring lightness to the base layers, however it was quite the opposite. It was the chocolate mouse on top of the crust that made it light and somewhat enjoyable. I am quite the sweet-tooth and even I could not down half of the meringue. The base was nice, crunchy textured and flavoured but not balanced when eaten with that ratio of meringue to base. Conclusion Considering the high rating on Urbanspoon, I was very disappointed with the service and technical execution of the pies. The pie pastry is way too dry for me and the sweet pies are unbalanced. The staff need to wake up or have a couple of espressos on the house to speed up their service. There is potential here for The Pie Tin to become a house-hold name with its image of generous and wholesome food. On this visit, it was not an experience to remember. @thesydneynoob

good value. overflowing, just don't ask for a knife or spare plate!!!

As far as a good pie goes this place has the atmosphere, the pies but certainly not the service. Pies and sides are great, which also comes at a pretty good price. The missus and I were very full and had a mediocre glass of wine each for sub $50. Now this place is doing well but that doesn't give you the right to be rude and arrogant. On numerous occasions when we asked for anything they barked back. "Can I have a knife please for my massive pie you have just served" ... no we don't do knifes (I looked around to see if we were on a plane or to see if there were kids around) OK. Im in a place the serves food but no knife, and tells you with attitude. Like I should have known. Then I asked for a spare plate... they said we don't do that. I offered to pay to rent a plate and the staff said "it's against the rules"... WHAT @$-72!? RULES??? Anyway the food is great, not the best pies in sydney but they are good. The service is what I imagine peasants were treated like back in the day so we won't be returning anytime soon.

This place is pie magic. We had heard whispers of delicious sweet and fruit pies at the Pie Tin, so we made a special trip to Newtown to visit. We had the coconut cream pie and the Snickers pie, both of which I adored. Huge slices and super rich. I am excellent at finishing my plate and we were struggling by the end. I took home a slice of the apple pie (which was the largest pie they had) for my flatmate and had a sneaky taste of that one as well. AMAZING. I think all of the slices are around $6-7 dollars. You can also pre-order whole pies. I'm thinking this will be a great idea for an upcoming birthday or party. I can't think of anywhere else in Sydney that does a nicer sweet/fruit pie than these guys. They had a whole case of tasty looking savoury pies too. I think I'll be back to see if those measure up. Drool.

I got the minced pie and it was decent. From what I hear, this is an authentic Australian dish. I wouldn't mind going back and trying another pie.

Did you know they have a 16 kg giant apple pie called the "Pie that ate Newtown"? Well now you do. Tucked away in a side street, Pie tin is pretty much the epitome of deluxe-o gourmet things in pastry. Try the Lamb sausage roll, most of all try the Pulled pork and apple pie. It's like having your cake and eating it too. Pulled pork Yes! and dessert all neatly served in delicious flaky pastry goodness. If you go in at brunch time, on a Monday youll pretty much get the pick of the litter. Other times, Bam-so-busy. Go really late before close and get 2 for 1. Lemme go on a cleanse. Pork and lamb and beef served in a carb cup. #nomnom

This is apparently a steak, smoked bacon and cheddar pie. Tastes suspiciously like bolognese sauce and bacon
    Peri C.

The decor is great, with communal tables and fresh flowers & magazines but the pie I got was just awful. I ordered the steak, smoked bacon and cheddar pie. It had about 3 pieces of steak and the rest was bolognese sauce and bacon (and not in a good way). I actually had to stop eating it, it tasted and looked so bad. If you're going to make a bolognese pie, call it that. My friend got the pulled pork which tasted okay but was very very wet inside. By "wet" I don't mean saucey - I mean wet, water, moisture etc. Not so nice. Salad sides were fresh & yummy. I don't know if I'd come back for salad though.

    Yummy yummy.. Beef Brisket Pie

One of the best pies place in the land of pies.. Their savory pies are exceptional, we tried the duck confit and the beef brisket. The pie is filled with well seasoned fillings. They also have the bigger than your head Apple Pie which my cousin tried, we all tried to help but it was hard to finish. If you are in Newtown, this is a great place to spend some time. The washroom is located at the back of the building, ask the counter staff for a key.

This place is amazing. I could honestly just leave it at that, because that's what it is, but I shall elaborate. I heard good things about the Pie Tin from a friend, and being the pie lover that I am, went on a little Newtown expedition to find it and give my 2c. WHOA. I wrote a text to my friend that same night to let her know I had been to pie heaven and never wanted to come back down. I unfortunately wasn't that hungry that I could fit in an entire meal, so I just ordered the pulled pork pie with apple and it was so good, I cherished every bite. You wouldn't think pulled pork and apple would go that well together but Pie Tin hit the nail on the head with that one. I shared half of my friend's chocolate ganache and caramel pie, then regretted not ordering a slice of sweet pie all to myself - it was probably the best sweet pie I've ever tasted, but not for the faint hearted, you definitely need to be a chocolate lover to appreciate the richness. I can't wait to go back and go all out...get a meal with the kumera mash and all. And try to fit in a sweet pie too...good luck with that, the meals are huge. An absolute must for pie fans.

The meeting was in the gallery because we knew someone who had access to it and in our formative years as a company we needed somewhere quiet to work, somewhere with coffee nearby and somewhere we could work undisturbed. This meeting would be perfect! 'Oh no!' Why did I say perfect? Sods law! The day of the meeting I woke up with a fever. A hot forehead dripping buckets of cold sweat. My nose like an upturned hose attached to a leaky tap; liquid continued to pour out and gravity only made it worse. I say nay to the idea of staying in bed and attend, but I do it on one condition, I have to get some delicious pastries for the team. I go to a place called Allan's Cake just up the road and see that they have a cabinet full of danish's and tarts. I make a selection and ask her if she could quarter them, (they have been accused of treason and this is the appropriate punishment, plus it makes them easier to share. (Convenient and taught a lesson)). I take these scrumptious sugary custard filled fruit and pastry snacks back to the team and they are so happy and delighted with their texture and taste that they don't even care that my appearing at the meeting has jeopardised everyone's health. They even let me go home early as I look, feel and am about to faint. A day of mixed emotion. Yes I was sick, but full of tasty pastry.

What's up with the $8.50 price tag? At the end of the day it's just bread, bacon and eggs. I washed this down with a coffee (the Molinari brand) and it was ok if a little bland. One time I stopped for lunch and chose the spinach and ricotta quiche with a side salad ($9.50). It was exactly what I was after (I love cheese!) but it was on the small side-the salad almost took over the plate but it certainly wasn't the star.
